funding fights over the largest breast cancer charity backed off funding cuts. >> what the foundation is saying about the reversal. hello, everybody. here's what people are talking about tonight. the susan g. komen foundation for the cure makes an about face, deciding not the cut grants to planned parenthood. the latest fallout in maryland and across the country. >> when the susan g. komen foundation yanked funding, it launched a national fire storm. >> the backlash led to a rapid reversal. on friday, komen not only took back the decision, but they said we want typologies to the american public for decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to save women's lives. >> it was political. i think the members were outraged by it. the public was outraged by it.

>> komen founders say the group initially severed ties because of a congressional investigation as to whether the organization used federal dollars for abortions which planned parenthood denies. >> it's been heartening to hear they've reconsidered their decision and the people whoring with the women and the women's health. >> vera newton is a survivor because of the very screening planned parenthood provides. she was diagnosed after her mother died of breast cancer because she was not screened. >> to take that away would be detrimental to a group of woman who are problem at more of a risk than others. >> newton has donated thousands of dollars and hours but considered stopping. staffers have been fielding angry calls all week and now they can refocus. >> we'll be going on to support

women and families in need. >> not only will planned parenthood continue to receive funding for komen, but there's been a tremendous out pouring of support. donations have surpassed $3 million. reporting live in baltimore, wjz eyewitness news. >> what was left unexplained is why the criteria applied only to planned parenthood and not the other grantees. new evidence tonight in a hit-and-run that left a woman dead. jessicas that latest on the information. >> police now have the car that ran over a 68-year-old woman who weeks ago. beverly moore was carrying groceries home when she was hit by a car that never stopped. investigators say attempt led to the suspect vehicle in hartford county. they're still trying to figure out who was driving the car.

>> police have not made any arrests in the case. >> a mass -- massive cam camera network. just hours ago the gunman appeared in court. how police used surveillance video to make the arrest. >> police have had these eyes on suspects for weeks before those arrests and the killing apeers to have been hastily planned. in fact the accused getaway driver forgot where he parked his car in the mall garage. >> all four of the men charged with murdering a teenager will stay behind bars. a judge denied their bail. in court, wjz learned more about the surveillance video that police credit with solving the case. it's part of an extensive network of 200 cameras at the mall after a murder of a teacher here during a botched robbery in 2005. prosecutors say the video theyly covered in this case

does not show the actual shooting. it shows the accused shooter walking through the mall wearing a mask. and we've learned the man who first spotted the victim and followed him through the mall was interviewed twice before they arrested him. >> i wouldn't say he's cooperative, but he's come in when asked to. the entire family is shocked he's been arrested on this. >> this is a childhood picture of the victim. his father is heart broken but relieved. >> it's good they're in jail. you can't go around here killing people. i love him. he was my only son. i see his face every night. >> the accused shooter told the judge i was hoping to get bail so i could seek appropriate representation. he slouched slouched in a jump suit appearing on a closed circuit television. >> we have a long way to go.

george hugley is from chevy chase, maryland. 22-year-old yeardley love attempted notre dame prep. the lacrosse players were dating at the university of virginia when she was killed. hugley admits he kicked down the door and shook her as her head repeatedly hit the wall, but his defense team says hugley did not intend to kill her. >> george hugley only learned yeardley love had died when he was told that by a detective. >> the jury will hear that defense along with his lacrosse teammates describing him as very drunk the night love died. they also suggest love could have fallen or adderall actually killed her. >> my guess is you're probably not going to persuade the jury to find not guilty. so if you're on the defense side, you want to do whatever you can to lower the risk. >> injury selection begins monday. it's expected to last through tuesday. >> hugley has been locked up

since the crime. he is charged with first-degree murder which carries a possible life sentence if convicted. >> well, we're enjoying another mild february day, taking another live look outside, the sun has set on friday, but could the spring fling be coming to an end this weekend. bob turk have more on the changes ahead. >> it's been pretty springy, i will tell you that much. nothing around here at all. really beautiful afternoon. when we open up and go out to the west, there's rain. there's still heavy snow in nebraska and colorado. that, essentially, that whole batch is moving off that to the east. it will continue as it moves in our direction. we'll see some re-- precipitation. temperature wise, well above freezing right now. we're at 46. even out in oakland, 42. over in d.c., 46.

now the cool spot, ocean city airport. they're one of the colder spots in the area, 37. tim has what to expect saturday night and sunday. >> the system is going to move to the east and lose its punch. the biggest portion is going to move to the south and it's going to pull down just enough cold air that we'll see light rain and mixture saturday night into sunday. high pressure stays pretty much in our general area to our north we'll have dry enough air that it will eat upmost of that rain system and most of that precipitation as it moves into the area. while the system weakens, we'll see a mix, but it's only in the overnight hours of saturday night and early sunday and then it starts to move out over here. we'll into improvement quickly. all right. we're going to go to some breaking news right now. sky eye chopper 13 is over the

scene of an accident. >> this is actually a car fire south of the mchenry tunnel. department of transportation have blocked off two lanes of i95. they're allowing traffic to go by this, but i expect them to close all lanes here momenttarily as the fire department is trying to get to the scene. the traffic is backed up to kayton avenue. expect delays. as mark pushes right and back on in, this is a chevrolet camaro that appears to be fully involved. there's no word on what caused this fire and we have no report of injuries at this time. you can see this is being attended by the maryland transportation authority police. right now they're allowing traffic to continue to go by. we'll stay on here and keep you updated. >> all right. thank you. the job market shows its most impressive gain since early next year, hiring surges across major industries, pushing the unemployment rate

lower for the fifth straight month. >> reporter: the labor market showed a new burst of life in january. employers went on a hiring spree, adding 243,000 new jobs. that pushes unemployment down to 8.3%. the lowest rate in three years. president obama welcomed the news and called on congress to keep it going by renewing the payroll tax cut. >> do not slow down the recovery that we're on. don't muck it up. keep it moving in the right direction. >> highing was up and manufacturing and construction. the service industry, retail and accounting grew at its fastest pace in a year. >> people are working longer. more people are working. they're getting paid more money. you really can't argue with the fact that this is a much better number than we've seen in a long time. >> the job numbers were significantly better than expected. that helped trigger a rally

here at the new york stock exchange. the dow jones industrial average is at the highest level since the financial melt down in 2008. the recovery is not coming fast enough. marcus arewell joined the lines at a job fair outside of new york city. this father of two is getting by on odd jobs after being laid off last month. >> really motivated to get a job. the goal is to get a job. there's nothing else. >> that goal may finally be getting easier. the unemployment rate has now dropped for five months in a row. alexis christoforous, wjz, eyewitness news. >> let's take a look at the closing numbers, the dow is up 157. the s&p 500 up 19 nasdaq up 46 points. it's at its highest mark in over a decade. well, the patriots' tom brady is known for his work on the football field, but now the super bowl quarterback is

working with john hopkins here in baltimore to save the life of his childhood mentor. wjz is live at the hospital. >> reporter: brady's mentor is in desperate need of a kidney transplant. he's currently in a program at john hopkins. the quarterback is still doing everything he can to make sure his friend finds a donor. as tom brady gets ready for the super bowl, the childhood mentor who helped get him there is fighting his own battle. >> he's a special human being. he's been a great friend. >> tom martinez has been training brady for more than 20 years. now the coach is in desperate need of a life saving kidney transplant. he's come to john hopkins for help. >> he was evaluated by our whole team. >> dr. montgomery says there's a long list of people waiting for transplants. >> it's reached a crisis point in terms of there not being enough donors available.

>> that's where brady's star power comes in. he made a public plea for donors to come forward. he's also put a picture of martinez on his website. >> that attention that's focused on the problem and on the crisis helps tremendously. >> out of the 80,000 people currently waiting waiting for donors, only 20% will receive one this year. 30% will die waiting. >> dr. montgomery says the attention brady is bringing is invaluable. >> so far 300 people have come forward wanting to be martinez's donor. those who don't match can donate to others. >> greater awareness and, you know, sort of a microlevel, more transplants from these individuals. >> and doctors say they're already screening possible donors for martinez, and he could receive a transplant within the next few months.

an update on our breaks news, a car is still on fire and it's causing major traffic problems. what's your update, captain mike perry. >> we've seen a couple of small explosions coming from this car. apparently the gas tank is heavily involved. you see dense black smoke coming from the vehicle. ice not clear what caused the fire, but as you see, transportation authority police now, in an abundance of caution, have shut down northbound i-95. the delay extends past kayton avenue. the fire department has still not arrived on the scene. that's somewhat inexplicable

because i'm sure this has been burning for 15 minutes or longer. you will see this thing is raging right now. it looks like a chevrolet corvette, a newer model just pulled over into the center median and caught fire. transportation authority police are attending it. it does not appear anyone is injured as a result of the fire, but as you can see it continues to rage. we'll continue to monitor the situation and keep you updated. back to you. >> thank you. captain mike perry. a montgomery teacher faces several charges. he's accused of sexual assaulting one of his students. >> 47-year-old scott spear coaches the girl's basketball and track teams at richard montgomery high school. on thursday police arrested and charged him with fourth degree sex offense against one of his students, a 16-year-old girl. >> if she had been younger, 14, 15 years of age, it would have

been bumped up to a 3rd degree sex offense. the crimes unit received a tip that a 16-year-old student had engaged in sexual intercourse with spear. dc detectives were told it may have occurred in may when he contacted her and tack her to a house and assaulted her twice. >> i don't really want to believe all the gossip that's going around before, like, it's proven. >> i'm actually shocked. he was actually my teacher is 8 8th grade. he was a cool dude. i didn't expect this to happen. >> spear was the students' track coach here at montgomery high school for the last three years and was also one of her 8th 8th grade middle schoolteachers. >> i don't think he did it. >> brian says spear was his 8 8th grade history teacher where spears still teaches. he doesn't believe the accusations. >> he just doesn't strike me as that kind of guy.

>> meanwhile, spear faces four charges once for each time he assaulted the 16-year-old. >> thank you very much. he has been a teachner montgomery county schools for 24 years. >> baltimore grocery store change is changing owners for the second time in seven months. the fresh and greens supermarket is being acquired by giant food. giant will be closing its door to move to the new location. they have been off limits to fishing for more than a decade, but it has not stopped their decline. now atlantic sturgeons have officially been declared endangered. a fish that has survived mass extinctions may not survive mann. >> they've been trying to keep

the species alive after a very long run in the wild. >> they pretty much has not changed since the jury as i can period when dinosaurs railroad around. >> numbers have gotten so low they've declared atlantic sturgeon endangered. nearly all are young and for a program hoping to breed more -- >> they're not easy to breed. the main issue is because they mature so late. we get these smaller sturgeon in that might be a couple of years old and it may be ten years before they mature. >> it's one part of their prehistoric nature. they don't have any teeth. >> and it's as food that trouble started for the sturgeon. >> the problem began when the demand for their eggs for the caviar market exploded. >> they have to kill the females in order to collect the

normal low would be 25. we have not seen too many of those recently. 66 the record high. 1932, 1961. it's the second day in a row. yesterday the record was one. this morning in 1961, it was four. light winds, not a major factor. looks like it will stay light most of the weekend until this low pressure begins to make an eastward movement. it will bring a lot of moisture and warmer air. it looks like rain breaking out. might see rain saturday evening, but temperatures been in the 40s sunday morning when this passes south of the region, maybe just enough cold air for wet snow along the maryland pennsylvania border. there could be a busting to a half inch in some areas, main loin the grassy surfaces. we look for increasing clouds.

it is 6:30, 46 degrees and mainly clear. good evening. thanks for staying with wjz. here are some of the stories people are talking about. a powerful winter storm is covering the country with a foot of snow. blizzard warnings are in effect from colorado to wyoming. a lot more snow is expected. people trudge their way to work in the middle of a massive snowstorm as daylight broke in denver. more than a foot of snow has fallen since they started this evening. crews are work around the clock, plowing and shoveling. forecasters expect another foot of snow to fall before the snow moves out on saturday, which can make it one of the top ten snow storms in denver history. >> this is unusual for february. actually in denver, march is one of our snowiest months. airlines canceled hundreds of

flights in and out of denver's airports. schools are closed and while most are moving, colorado had to close parts of the interstate because of the dangerous positions. the wind would top up to 50 miles per hour, producing blizzard conditions. visibility at times will be near zero. >> still, some people don't have a choice but to brave the weather and go about their business. now the storm is stretching as far south as new mexico. tim williams is tracking this massive system. tim is this. >> their biggest problem is this system is mushing up against the foothills and it's pushing into the highest elevations. we look at the doppler radar and all the moisture is going up into the highest elevation where is the air is the coldest that it could possibly be there. it's generating its cold air by the pressure system that's

the street is renamed william torbet way. he was shot and killed outside a downtown nightclub in 2011. today he was remembered by many. >> i pledge i will work with the commissioner to see that his death was not in vain. that we learn from this tragic incident so nothing like this ever happens again. >> torbet's family says they're gateful for the changes but they still don't have closure. a dangerous chase with state police. 22-year-old john nestle was fulled over by a trooper on martin road. he sped away leading a pursuit. the cruiser hit a fence. the trooper is recovering from minor injuries and nestle is facing dui, assault, and other charges. a driver falls asleep behind the wheel, destroying

the family's lives. how the family's lives were changed in an instant. >> tired truckers and long hours on the road can turn deadly. a trip home from the family reunion turns deadly on the ohio turnpike. >> august 16th, 2010, the trucker fell asleep at the wheel. >> susan flattery and her two sons slowed down at a construction zone, but a trucker behind them never sees it coming. he never hits the break. >> he fell asleep and hit them at 55 miles per hour. >> he barreled into the back of the car. >> i was at work. and i got a phone call. the worst phone call you could ever imagine. >> susan, a popular professor is killed instantly. rescue crews pull 16-year-old peter and 12-year-old matthew out of the wreckage barely clinging to life. >> they say i'm the -- you don't need to ask anything

else. >> peter fights back from serious injuries and recovers, but matthew suffers a traumatic brain injury. >> he was at levels of subconsciousness for six or seven months. >> during that time, ed learned what happened to his family is not unusual. >> it should scare the living daylights out of you. it should. >> almost 4,000 people are killed every year in accidents with truckers and studies show driver fatigue causes more than a third of them. in fact, 65% of truckers admit they sometimes feel drowsy while driving, and nearly half say they've fallen asleep at the wheel. >> so truckers are tired? >> yeah, for the most part you get tired. your clock keeps running, so you don't have time to stop, take a nap and keep going. >> new rules issued by the department of transportation in december limit the number of hours truckers can spend on the road, but advocates like ed say they're not doing allot.

making progress with the ankle listed as questionable for this sunday's super bowl. change coming to the acc, that's going to impact maryland. the league announced that in football, syracuse will be added to the -- terps. they will play pitt twice a year. that means terps will play duke just once in the regular season in basketball, playing powerful duke just once, a break for maryland but it breaks up what's been a growing rivalry. it's a tough test tomorrow. mark turgeon's team will take on north carolina. it's a meaningful matchup going head to head against tarheel's coach williams. turgeon recall as lesson after losing a game as a young jv coach. >> i remember calling coach williams after the game. i was like i don't know if i'm going to be any good at this. he said i'm not you, and i'm not larry brown.
