maryland families spent almost 12 hours inside this jury room to find out who will hear their loved ones trial. a case that put the small college town in national headlines. >> things are kind of crazy around here. >> reporter: more than 200 reporters are covering the trial of george hughley. hughley beat his exgirl friend to death after a heavy night of drinking. the hughley family had nothing to say after the jury began choosing the jury. the trial is the talk of the town. >> what are those decisions? >> probably more concern for their family. >> reporter: how has the murder of yeardley love and this trial affected this community? >> the university has been having conversations about domestic abuse and abuse

situations and alcohol issues. and that has been very well received. >> reporter: the mother of this college bound student already did just that. >> reporter: you think you use this as a teaching moment for your daughter? >> yes. >> reporter: did you learn this? >> reporter: yes, very much. >> court resumes again monday morning. then about two weeks of testimony. reporting from charlottesville virginia, adam may, wjz eyewitness news. now hughley faces life in prison if convicted on the most serious charges. a head on collision slows down rush hour tonight. you can see the wreckage on bell air road and sky chopper 13. both cars landed on the grass on the side of the road. one of the drivers was taken to the hospital. we're working to find out exactly what they are doing.

culture class on one of maryland's controversial counties. some say it unfairly targets imgrants, megan. >> reporter: while supporters of that bill say it's a way to send a message to illegal immigrants living in the county but some oppose erz o -- opposers say it is not a message they want to send. >> reporter: the county half way between baltimore and washington, d.c. is home to the state's capital. the county councilman jerry walker says it's almost home to many illegal immigrants. >> when folks come here illegally they come here and draw down on our citizens. >> reporter: now he's proposed a bill to make english the language of the county.

the 2010 election robo calls goes on trial accused of suppressing calls. derek valcourt has more on his free speech defense. >> reporter: a group of supporters follow political consultant julius henson to court. he's hoping to avoid the same fate as paul shoruck who now awaits sentencing for sending robocalls to registered democrats hinting there was no need to go vote. >> if governor o'malley and president obama have been success. we're okay. relax, everything is fine. the only thing left is to watch it on tv tonight. >> basically the state made a mistake in bringing this case and we'll prove it. >> reporter: hinson admits he was also behind the robo calls.

conditions on saturday like this melee at another mall in december after nike released a popular pair of air jordans. >> someone said there was nice? >> reporter: the problem was classic supply and demand. there were 150 customers and only 90 pairs of shoes for sale. they sold out in minutes. what we did is brought in five customers at a time. let them get their shoes. and just kept rotating like that. >> reporter: according to reports, the nike foam sneakers sell for up to $200. but they are so popular they are double in price selling for as much as $500 on the internet. >> they only release them once a year and when they're on sale like that, some people buy them for themselves, others buy them to resell and you know they can double or triple their money. >> yeah i can believe that

louisiana. the sick passengers were quarantined during a stop. when orlando brown died suddenly of diabetes everyone was stunned. today best friend wally williams tells wjz brown never knew he had the disease. he was convinced the giant of a man known as zeus would be alive if he only news. >> reporter: on the field, orlando brown could take the hits and push back harder. but it was the hits that he never saw coming that brought him down. orlando died suddenly last september at his inner harbor home at just 40 years old. at first, no one knew why. for 10 days what killed this giant of a man inside his inner harbor home inside his home remained a mystery. orlando brown died of diabetes. >> it was a big sense of

emptiness that's left without him being around. >> reporter: his best friend is still reeling from the news. when you heard that he died from the diabetes, were you shocked. >> i am still shocked. >> reporter: the friend he knew from college never suspected that he had diabetes. >> i know for a fact he thought it was something it was never going to be a problem and if he knew he would have taken care of it. >> reporter: the tricky part is knowing you even have it. it's thought that 7 million americans walking around have diabetes and don't even know. by the time you notice symptoms you've had it for some times. >> it's often called a silent killer because the symptoms are so quiet and confused for

something typical. >> this disease is so sneaky. it can come and hit you before you know it. it's like bam, it's here. >> reporter: like orlando brown, 57-year-old debby holden never suspected she had diabetes but found out with a routine medical test. >> i was one of the lucky ones to still be alive because the same thing that happened to him could have very well have happened to me. >> it's a problem with african american men, that we don't go to the doctor because we feel that we can just be tough. >> you think that there's a feeling of being invincible. >> yeah. >> among your teammates. >> there definitely is. but you are coast that way. you're brought up that way. >> reporter: wally is heartbroken knowing orlando would have successfully dealt with diabetes like he dealt with everything else. >> that was the last conversation i had with him.
