cans of gas. one was with the body. there was accelerants throughout the entire house. >> police say before he carried out the murder-suicide, powell donated his sons' toys to charity and left demonstrations about his personal effects in multiple e-mails. >> he sent e-mails to me and family and another pastor, making sure that everyone knew that he was gone, that he was the one that did this. he put a plan in motion and he carried it out. >> reporter: powell had been under police scrutiny following the disappearance of his wife, susan cox powell. six days ago, he lost a custody battle for his sons. >> reporter: chuck and judy said their grandsons were at his home playing. >> they didn't want to stop and go see daddy today. they seemed to be losing interest in going to see him. >> reporter: josh powell never mentioned susan in his goodbye

something goes terribly wrong. a motorcycle rider takes a fall during a stunt. take a look at this. wow. apparently the man had a guide wire during that jump, it sent him and his bike to the ground. the stunt was part of the shriners circus. the stuntman broke his femur bone. another man was hurt by a flying cable. that accident is under investigation. a michigan man could have avoided a trip to the hospital if he had put down his phone, according to authorities. the man was walking down the wrong side of the road when a pickup truck hit him. police say the 23-year-old wasn't paying attention because he was not only texting but listening to his ipod. he was treated for a fractured hip. the driver wasn't hurt.

way above average as this winter has been. we're going to be close to the average, despite the snow coming our way. look at these 50s out there. even upper 40s in the mountains. we'll take you close and show you a couple of 40s westminster now. some places along the water are a little cooler. but generally speaking, we're in the 50s this afternoon. winds have turned around to the northwest. and that plays into the forecast. because there is colder air up there. some of it gets pulled into in next storm and that's why it will be for this storm. slushy. there is a chance for small accumulation out of this. you notice there are some really dark colors out there. colder dose coming our way over the weekend. and highs are going to take a bigger hit. it's this storm right in here. week one right now. it will be moving our way tomorrow. picking up moisture along the way. and when it does, we'll see some rain and snow break out in

the afternoon hours. and this is, overall, what we're expecting with this storm. we are looking at generally a coating to an inch in this region. and a lot of it is just slushy out there. lawns, cars that aren't running because they're a little colder. and some of the trees. the thing is, one, two, three, four, farther north and west. we're down to the rain-snow mix. when that gets out of here, we're going back up into the 40s. a little rain-snow mix out of it. then it gets out of here. and that colder air already gets out of here by thursday. the next round of more arctic air comes our way over the weekend. forecast comes together like this. on the waters. winds do turn around with the storms approaching tomorrow. tonight, still quiet out there. partly cloudy. we go down to 32. tomorrow, look at this. we are back up to around 40 degrees. we'll see rain and snow break out, mainly during the afternoon and evening. and there is a chance of small accumulation. that could cause problems during the evening commute. but most of this storm is going

thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm vic carter. >> and i'm denise koch. here's what people are talking about. >> the ban on same-sex marriage in california is unconstitutional. the federal appeals court ruled today. gay and lesbian couples still have to wait before they can tie the knot. >> reporter: people outside the federal courthouse in san francisco cheered and hugged after the judge ruled on california's ban on same-sex marriage. >> we already knew in our hearts that proposition 8 violates the law of love. >> reporter: the court ruled that proposition 8 violates the rights of same-sex couples. >> it's not okay to take something away from people based on who they are. >> reporter: during the four- month period, same-sex marriages were legal here in 2008. an estimated 18,000 couples tied the knot. but 52% of voters put a stop to

same-sex weddings. one catholic group trying to uphold the ban said no court should presume to redefine marriage, americans overwhelmingly object to changing the definition of marriage. and the legal fight is over. prop 8 sponsors are promising to appeal all the way to the state's supreme court. for now, things are on hold until the legal wrangling is sorted out. >> same-sex marriage is legal in six other states and washington, d.c. we have breaking news right now. we're going to go live to captain mike perry, who is in sky eye chopper 13. >> we're in northeast baltimore. this is in the 2500 block of east northern parkway. where around 3:00 this afternoon, city police were attempting to apprehend a stolen vehicle. passenger that stolen vehicle went onto the parking lot of the friendship economy, which is located in the 2500 block east of northern parkway. the suspect bailed out of the vehicle. then ran inside the school.

now, police did follow the suspect inside. apparently this building houses two schools. it houses the friendship academy, which is a high school. and then nacka school, which is, i understand, a middle school. allegedly, the suspect ran inside the nacka school. there were students inside when he ran inside. originally the school was placed on lockdown. and then just a short time ago, police were able to evacuate all of the students. they were released for the day. police still do have a cordon around the outside of the school building. around both schools. there's city police vehicles and school police on the scene. the suspect is still to be believed at large, inside the school. there were no reports of injuries at this at -- at the present time. wuas you can see, city police still working to apprehend an alleged -- i'm sorry, an alleged auto theft suspect who ran inside the school.

back to you on tv hill. >> thank you very much, captain mike perry, in sky eye chopper 13. a twist in the alleged sexual abuse case, surrounding former syracuse coach, bernie fine. now, one person says fine is still harassing him. kai has more on the case. >> reporter: one of the men who accuses fine of harassing him as a child, now says fine continues to call his house. zach thomaselli says the former coach has called him 20 times since he came forward about the alleged abuse. the judge granted him a temporary restraining order but the incident is still under investigation. bernie fine has not been charged, partly because the statute of limitations had expired. thomas pele -- thomaselli came forward with similar claims to others. >> last year, thomaselli pleaded guilty to molesting up to three boys. he faces sentencing. meanwhile, judges are asking for documents from a

grand jury witness. jerry sandusky's lawyers are asking for grand jury testimony. they are also asking a judge for their client to be able to visit with his grandchildren. the former penn state coach faces 52 criminal counts. but he denies all of the allegations. amanda knox's murder conviction in italy may have been overturned last year, but she's still facing another conviction for slander. knox appealed in court today. knox was charged and convicted of slander, after police say she accused an italian bar owner with murdering her roommate, meredith kircher. knox and her boyfriend were convicted of that murder. syria is facing more international backlawyer -- backlash. at least eight more countries have pulled their ambassadors out of the capital, amidst ongoing bloodshed. >> reporter: thousands of syrians who still support

president bashar asad lined the streets of damask us to welcome an ally. russia's foreign minister arrived to cheers and met with the syrian leader. the visit comes just days afterrussia and china vetoed a u.n. resolution that backed an arab call for hass sad to leave power. syrian forces ramped up their assault on opposition fighters in the city of holmes overnight. rebels say hundreds have died in relentless assaults over the past few days. a mass funeral was held in the street to remember the dead. the escalating violence caused many european countries in the countries to pull their people out of damascus. and the embassy closed in the capital. turkey said his country cannot

a judge is set to hear opening statements in the deadly oil rig explosion that trigger the the worst oil spill in the nation. attorneys for bp, halliburton and transoil am each get about an hour to speak. they are trying to determine who is liannual for the 2010 oil spill. it killed 11 workers and pumped millions of gallons of crude oil into the water. police in atlanta are looking for a group of teenage attackers. jessica kartalija is in the newsroom now with more on this video. >> reporter: police are calling this a coordinated attack, captured on camera, and and uploaded onto the internet. several teens attack an unsuspecting boy as he's walking out of a convenience store. the victim is viciously kicked, punched, even hit with a tire. police say at least three other males stood by, recording the attack and watching out for police. police say the crime was only reported after that video was uploaded to the internet. they're now expecting -- examining it to see if they can

identify those attackers. vic? >> thank you, jessica. federal investigators are considering treating hate crimes on the video. the entire staff is removed from the school board in los angeles, removing every teacher from a school at the center of a growing teacher sex abuse investigation. john blackstone reports for wjz. parents are still very angry. >> what we want? >> yesterday. -- >> we have screened entire staff that will come in. >> the los angeles unified school district announced late monday that the entire staff of mira monty elementary, 150 teachers and other workers will be replaced by thursday. this is one of the largest grammar schools. the move is an attempt to restore confidence, in a school system that parents say has failed to protect their children. >> my son gets gets to see another news team at school.

school. an 8th grader is suing roosevelt middle because school officials asked him to cover up his bracelet. they claim it is distracting to other children. but the boy's parents say he was doing it to raise breast cancer awareness. some students are trying to get to the bottom. they are investigating involuntary twitching. a local doctor treated them and said it was psychological. but some parents think a chemical spill could be linked to the systems. an ohio woman dials the wrong number at the right time. here is more on the phone call that may have saved her life. >> reporter: loretta smith's story is so amazing, you couldn't make it up. >> well, i'm still here. and i'm moving. >> reporter: she had a stroke this week that paralyzed her right side. >> every time i think of it, it chokes me up. >> that's her son wally.

she was debailitated. loretta-- debilitated. loretta's right hand was not working right. she made a mistake on the prefix. she ended up calling a stranger in colorado, named kenny. >> i am in colorado now. somebody said they were having a stroke. and they called my phone. it's 3941 state road. >> reporter: kenny, some 1300 miles away in colorado, called for help and in minutes, loretta was here at the hospital, being treated for a minor stroke. >> he is my angel, absolutely. >> reporter: 70-year-old loretta has 5 kids and 8 grandkids and one amazing story for the ages. >> i just can't really believe any of it. >> i said, kenny, what could i ever do to thank you? >> well, kenny tried to downplay his role. he said he didn't save smith. she just found him. scary moments at a subway station in australia. take a look. this woman looks away for a few

seconds, when her baby stroller rolls onto the train tracks. she was quickly able to jump onto the tracks. she pulled the 5-month-old to safety. the infant was treated for minor cuts and bruises. but otherwise, he is okay. remembering charles dickens. prince charles led a special service today, marking the 200th anniversary of the author's birth. the author died at his home near rochester in 1870. he was buried alongside other literary greats in poet's corner in westminsteraby-- westminster abbey. quarterback showed off the lombardi, along with teammates in a ticker tape parade. the celebration made its way down the canyon of heroes the . the team was also honored with a ceremony. >> who cleans up that ticker

here's a live look outside right now. this is the kind of february we want every year, but things are changing. bob? >> this certainly has not been much in the way of this winter. but we have a little bit of winter aheaded our -- headed our way again. tomorrow. very much like this past saturday. got a little snow, rain. some areas did accumulate an inch or so. take a look at temps. very pleasant afternoon. just like spring. 54 now. humidity is way down at 33%. the dew point is low. 26. a lot of dry air aloft. west/northwest winds at 6. the barometer holding steady. right now, 30.12 inches. currently, around the area, 55 in washington. 50 in elkton. and the cool spot, oakland at 41 degrees currently.

locally, 52 in westminster. and in the mid-50s, even down by the bay, as you can see. tomorrow, it will generally be just rain close to the water. north of the city, we'll see some snow probably midafternoon, into the evening hours. the caveat with this kind of snow is the ground is extremely warm. temperatures now on the beltways, about 65 degrees. so it's going to really have to cool down. and really has to snow pretty hard to accumulate mainly on the grass. 55, 32 today. 43, 25 the normals. records, pretty low. 1904. 64. 1895. 6 above zero. right now, a northwest wind will bring in this dryer air. it won't be nearly as chilly tonight as it was this morning. but we have an area of low pressure sitting out here in the midwest. we'll call it a kansas clipper. it's moving very quickly. has a little snow on the western side. rain on the eastern side. it's pretty moisture-starved. but it will bring us clouds late tonight. just to the north is a bank of

clouds across harrisburg, areas north. we'll see the clouds on the increase. and tomorrow, during the day, and the afternoon, this low approaches. some warm air to the south. and a little bit of snow across the baltimore area north and west. basically, i think we're looking for intermittent snoal for let's say, 1:00, 2:00 in the evening and afternoon hours. accumulate mainly on the grassy surfaces. and it will all move off to the east. sunshine and warmer temperatures come right back on thursday. northeast winds, 10 to 15 knots. bay temp around 42 degrees. tonight, increasing clouds am down about 32. tomorrow, around 40, with rain. and then rain-snow mixture. small accumulation possible. here in the city, maybe a half inch on the grass. north and west of town. an inch or two, particularly by the mason-dixon line. the same thing could happen last saturday. very similar kind of situation. >> it's going to be pretty tough to accumulate on any roadways. >> good. >> it either gets colder or
