first time. monique griego is in the newsroom with the candid remarks. >> reporter: brinker's is the first she's made publicly, since the organization reversed its move. brinker, the founder of susan g. komen for the cure, admits she made some mistakes. and ended up causing some controversy. brinker said she has learned a lot and now must regain the public's trust. karen handle resigned from the charity, after facing criticism for backing that short-lived policy. mary? >> thanks, monique. with the funds from komen, planned parenthood is able to provide 170,000 breast exams. how did yeardley love die? that's the focus today in the george huguely trial. this is taking place in charlottesville, virginia. jurors were shown graphic crime scene photos in court today. >> the focus of today's thing,

yeardley love's body. meanwhile, defense attorneys have been picking apart all of those details, trying to lay the groundwork for their own defense. >> reporter: the attorney for george huguely does not deny he was involved in an altercation with his ex-girlfriend, yeardley love in 2010. but he contends her death was accidental. in court, for the first full day of testimony, they're focusing on medical evidence. the scientific explanation for love's death. prosecutors contend love died of blunt force trauma, beaten to death by huguely. wjz caught this trauma coming to and from the courtroom. prosecutors say huguely kicked in the door, leaving a giant hole and traces of his dna. love's former roommate testified love was afraid for her safety.

another piece of evidence in e- mail. >> huguely wrote love, you said you would get back together with me if i stopped getting so drunk. i should kill you. >> both love and huguely were intoxicated the day of her death. experts will testify that love died of positional asphyxiation, passing out in her pillow, after the fight with huguely. but prosecutors say the heavy drinking wasn't responsible for anything except huguely's rage. >> in court, we heard from one of the first responders who said that yeardley love's body was still warm when he got on the scene. the implication is that yeardley love may have survived these injuries if help had survived a little sooner. and that drove yeardley's mother and sister, sitting inside that courtroom, to tears. adam may, wjz eyewitness news. >> adam, thank you. also on the stand today, a

new at 5:00 and 6:00. foreclosure abuse. today, federal and state officials announce a $25 billion settlement between 49 states, including maryland and five major banks. edward lawrence reports for wjz. the signing means that some homeowners will get relief. abel arredondo lost his home to foreclosure last year. he sold off his possessions and traded off his car for a motorcycle. but it wasn't enough. >> we tried. we did everything. but it just seemed as if the bank -- the bank didn't even want to cooperate. >> reporter: but some relief could be on the way for millions struggling to stay in their homes. they have agreed to help up to 1 million homeowners who are making payments but whose mortgages are under water. that means they owe more than their homes are worth. this comes after federal and state investigations found that banks used abusive processes.

>> under the terms of this settlement, america's biggest banks, banks that were rescued by taxpayer dollars, will be required to right these wrongs. >> reporter: the housing collapses hit california especially hard. as many as 2 million homeowners here may be eligible for help under the new agreement. nationwide, another 750,000 people who lost their homes to foreclosure may receive a check for up to $2,000. >> $2,000? thank you very much. but we're out struggling still. it helps, but what is it going to do for us in the long run? >> reporter: $2,000 won't get abel back his home. but it might help pay for gas for his motorcycle. in los angeles, edward lawrence, wjz eyewitness news. >> maryland's share in the settlement, about $960 million. wjz breaks down where that money will go, coming up new at 5:00. and some money is made on wall street today. dow is up 7. and has reached a

3 1/2-year high. s&p up 2. nasdaq up 11. snow is long gone. the sun is back outside right now. just a beautiful afternoon, with above-average temperatures at times. wjz has weather and traffic together. here is meteorologist tim williams with the updated numbers from first warning weather. tim? >> reporter: well, mary, good afternoon. good afternoon, everyone. yesterday we got up to a daytime high of about 49 degrees. the daytime highs now, the average, is 44 for this day. so we are at 44 now. just coming down, actually from about 45 last hour. so we have been a little above that temperature at points through the day, as mary mentioned. 30 in oakland. 35 in ocean city. and 43 in elkton. if it feels a little warmer than yesterday, of course, without all of the precipitation, the real difference is the sun. we are about 8 degrees warmer than we were this time yesterday, across the entire area, we are pretty much substantially above where we were this time yesterday. the sun really makes a

we're learning more about what may have prompted a man to open fire inside a new york courthouse. investigators say timothy mullqueen was angry over the slum lords. he fired inside the town's courthouse yesterday morning. security officers fired, hitting mullqueen. he later died at a hospital. one officer suffered minor injuries. no arraignment date has been set. a person accused of leaking thousands of documents to wikileaks. bradley manning will be arraigned at fort meade here in maryland. it comes ahead of a court- martial that the army approved last week. a trial date has not yet been approved. he faces a possible life sentence. it is becoming more popular every day. buying those boongded store -- abandoned storage lockers. but you could wind up buying things that police are looking

again. >> yes. right here in our own backyard. at this storage facility in framingham, is where a man with alleged ties to al qaeda, is said to have worked up an elaborate scene. >> he planned to use remote- controlled planes, packed with explosives. most of his work took place inside that framingham storage bins. that's the problem, according to police chief cais. he has even found bodies in storage bins but says his hands are tied when it comes to launching an investigation. >> and suspected al qaeda members have pleaded not guilty to trying to attack the pentagon. a one-time aid to former congresswoman gabrielle giffords could soon hold her now vacant seat in congress. ron barber announced today his candidacy. barber served as district director for giffords from 2007 until last month when she

relative humidity, at 39%. winds are from the west at 10 miles per hour, just a light wind across most of theidate. but the high pressure is in control. 30.20. that's pretty steady this afternoon. right now, we have 42 in elkton. 45 on the shore. cold spot around the area is out in oakland, at 30. we have 47 down towards d.c. around the immediate metro area, 45 seems to be the magic number. we have 44 in columbia,46 in annapolis and kent island. and 40s in westminster. the winds coming in from the west across most of central maryland. a bit of a northwest component. then we have one little rogue wind down around patuxent river, coming in from the east at 7 miles per hour. but for the most part, that north wind is bringing in cooler air. and it's tapping in air around detroit, chicago. and that's what's filtering in around the region. we're still a little on the cool side of our average temperatures. and dropping in rapidly upon

now that the sun is on the way down. won't really see too many of the 50s in the region. at least over the next few days, what we're really going to see is a tap into very, very cold arctic air that's going to plunge into the region over the next few days. tomorrow, a bit of an exception. but heading into the weekend, this is what it looks like. we have high pressure in control right now. the temperature change is going to come with a front that is really following these lines of clouds up there, right around southeastern canada. and that is the real leading edge of the front that is going to be moving in, say friday night into saturday. with that front, high pressure is going to ease off. that front is going to come through. it will bring with it some moisture. it's going to pull in some from the south. and then a low is expected to develop along the coastline. the cold air starts starts to total in. and we could see another round of rain and snow. big pressure is going to be high pressure will drive those temperatures down. with cold air moving in from

eight minutes elapsed from when a social worker called 911 to report children in danger and when sheriff's deputies were dispatched. it took another 14 minutes for the deputy to get to the home. for the first time, we're hearing from the husband of the social worker who made the call. >> she's very upset and traumatized. she has said that she thinks that this is something that is going to be a life changing event. >> larry benson says his wife takes comfort knowing she did the right thing when calling for help. but there is growing concern that the 911 dispatcher did not. >> seconds count in what we do. lives depend on that. we get that and we are all about being the best at what we do. >> the social worker pleaded with him to send sheriff's deputies and that she smelled gasoline and powell wouldn't let her in. the dispatcher continued to ask

her questions questions about her job. not seeming to understand the gravity of the situation. >> how long will it be? >> i don't know. they have to respond to life- threatening situation first. >> this could be life- threatening. he went to court wednesday and department get his kids back. this is -- i'm afraid for their lives. we try to get it right. every time. sometimes with humans here, mistakes are made. >> while the investigation is under way, the dispatcher will stay on the job. the pentagon announces plans to allow women to serve in military jobs closer to the front lines. kai is in the newsroom with more on the new rules for women in combat. kai? >> the new rules will allow women to work at the higher level. other ground units directly involved in combat it still

means women are barred from working in special operations forces. of the more than 6,000 armed forces who have been killed in the iraq and afghanistan wars, 144 were women. denise. >> while the new rules won't open up the navy seals or the army delta force to women, some defense officials have said they may be eventually open to that. a judge is now deciding whether the man who shot president ronald reagan can spend more time outside of a mental hospital. in closing arguments today, lawyers for john hinckley argued that he should be able to spend more time at his mother's home. the 56-year-old was determined to be insane when he shot and wounded reagan in 1981. one of the three siblings accused in a multistate crime spree reaches a plea deal. today, lee grace doherty pleaded guilty to one count of attempted first-degree assault and two counts of felony menacing. the 29-year-old and her two

they're planning to make the cruise ship industry safer. >> reporter: they plan to sue carnival, the parent company. the italian cruise line ship rammed into a reef last month and then capsized. at least 17 people were killed and 15 remain missing. the ship's captain is accused of causing that shipwreck. but survivors also say that crewmembers failed to promptly inform them about the incident. they talk about tightening regulations. >> some have said they have been approached by the cruise company, offering settlements are a few thousand dollars. maryland's governor is boasting baltimore's public marine terminals. today, governor martin o'malley said it was a busy 2011, handling more autos and containers than ever before. most are key commodities for the port. also a milestone in 2011, more

than 251,000 people sailed on more than 100 cruises from the port of baltimore. well, the sun was shining today, just 24 hours after maryland got a little taste of winter. taking a live look outside. still a bit of a chill in the air. we have weather and traffic together. bob is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. bob? >> pretty normal day, believe it or not. temperatures back in the low to mid-40s, where they should be. right now, around the state, most places where they really should be. 44 here. the cold spot, oak oakland at 30 degrees. much dryer. the dew point is way down to 21 degrees. now, yesterday afternoon, at this time, temperatures were actually 7 degrees colder than they are right now. so 7 degrees warmer this afternoon than yesterday afternoon. the airport got down to 30 this morning. the city never really got down below freezing. looks like a warmer day coming up tomorrow. and then some cold air, just in time for the weekend. vic? >> okay, bob. thank you. let's check in on the roads now with kristy breslin.

things have gotten busy for the harbor tunnel throughway in that northbound direction. expect some congestion there from moravia road to past 95. as far as the beltway goes, the north side of the inner loop really jammed up there, around to harford road. on the southwest side of the inner loop, also heavy in that direction around to security boulevard. the outer loop on the west side, not quite as intense there. expect about 10 minutes there from 70 to baltimore national pike. 70 itself in the eastbound direction, moving fine. but westbound, some slowing there from 29 to marriottsville road. and accidents include arundel mills boulevard at ridge road and mcmecken street and mount royal. let's take a live look. you can see a lot of cars there on the beltway, at dulaney valley road. this traffic report is brought to you by the 2012 baltimore motor trend international auto show. it's coming to the baltimore convention center, thursday february 9th, through sunday february 12th. you can get all the information at auto show.

com.com. a baltimore paramedic is being held as a trailblazer tonight. as gigi barnett reports, no other african american woman has reached her rank. >> reporter: congratulatory e- mails for lieutenant bianca thompson flooded her inbox this week. >> i don't think it's setting in yet. it's surreal. >> reporter: last month, she received a major promotion in the baltimore fire d. >> i'm the first african american female lieutenant in fire. >> she put in the application two years ago. she waited, waited more. then the phone call came. she joined the apartment shortly after 9/11. >> that was my epiphany for what i wanted to do. i wanted to help people. so a month to the date from 9/11, i resigned from the fbi. >> reporter: lieutenant thompson now has several paramedics, firefighters and equipment under her command. say they say she's a trailblazer.

a los angeles elementary school is reopening in the wake of a sex abuse scandal. mira monte school was closed following a series of allegations that teachers performed lewd acts on students. two teachers are under arrest. authorities have replaced the entire teaching staff with new faculty. teachers are holding an open dialogue with the children to talk about what happened. casey anthony can't seem to stay out of the spotlight. racy new photos have shown up. >> a handful of photos hit the internet last month, showed anthony with short, blond hair, blass -- glasses and a nose ring. and now, more than 150 have surfaced. many were taken inside the same place she taped her video blog, but a few were taken outside. anthony posted a two-minute you

of year. right now, 40, westminster. they had an inch and a half up there. northern baltimore, northern carroll county had the most locally. generally between 1 and 1 1/2 inches or so. airport south, basically no snow. just a few flakes. 45, 30 today. the average is now 44. just went up. and the average low, 26. that's gone up since last week. the record high, 69 degrees 2001. 1994, remember that one, vic? 7 below zero. that's the record low for the city and the airport, 7 below zero. all right. let's take a look at the year. that was a cold year, by the way. moonlight came out. 2:00, 3:00 in the morning. things really dried up quickly. there's a front across southern quebec and ontario. this is actually an arctic front. we haven't seen too many of these this winter. but this is advancing

southward. in addition, a little area of disturbed weather northward, going to ride off to the east. it's going to catch up with that front. however, looks like the moisture with that will reach us while it's still pretty warm. ahead of that front, it will still be in the 40s. but once that front passes, saturday afternoon, temperatures are going to drop back quickly in the 30s. we could see a little rain in the morning. early saturday, late friday night. and maybe a few snow showers as that cold air begins to move in on saturday afternoon. so it will get considerably colder saturday, late in the day. and saturday night and sunday is going to be a windy and cold day. but in the meantime, beautiful, warm day tomorrow. front coming through. boom. then it turns cold again for the weekend. quick cold shot once again. south winds on the bay. mild day. 5 to 10 knots. bay temp, around 42. tonight, then, clear. nice night. seasonably cool. 28 by morning. tomorrow, sunny. then some clouds. tomorrow's high, warmer than today. up to 50, then clouds come in tomorrow night. a little rain overnight.
