good evening everyone, thanks for joining us. if you were outside you probably noticed two things, it was cold and very windy. let's look at people, very bundled up: you definitely needed the layers out there today. let's get right to meet roálgts bernadette woods. she's live with an updated look at first warning eye doppler radar and this cool air we're experiencing this week edge. >> a real blast in the arctic. we're going to start out showing you everything pouring straight down from the arctic to the mid-atlantic. here are some of the numbers. for the winds, these are sustained winds that gusted to over 20 miles per hour this afternoon. this is the cold air coming in. it's already down to 18 in

oakland. when you factor in those winds it feels like it's in the teens for most of us. out there in the mountains, like the single digits. we'll have the forecast coming up. now to the death of whitney houston. investigators still looking into the deaths of the superstar. but her daughter bobby cristina was rushed to the hospital today. houston's death has cast a shadow over tonight's grammy award ceremony. >> reporter: whitney houston's old child bobby cristina left a hotel on a stretcher. an ambulance took the 18-year- old to the hospital with an unknown conditions. just hours later, her mother's body was taken to the morgue. she was there to attend clive

davis pregrammy bash. the party went on as scheduled with davis saying that's what whitney would have wanted. >> i do have a very heavy heart and i am personally devastated by someone who has meant too much to me. >> alicia paid tribute with a song. jennifer hudson will take the stage to honor her idol. houston's sudden passing was talked about on the red carpet. >> she was going to go. what a time now that everyone can honor her. >> no cause of death has been

determined, that may take weeks. >> now houston's daughter bobby cristina was releaseed from the hospital earlier tonight. there's still no word from the coroner on the autopsy for houston. as whitney houston is remembered throughout the world. one of her classmates has opened up to wjz. dr.maria payne practices at the greater baltimore center. she spoke to wjz about what it was like to go to school with whitney houston. they both went to an all girl's catholic school and dr. payne remembers houston kindly. >> she was very unpretentious, very kind, loving and she was an ordinary high school girl just like all of us. >> reporter: dr. payne also said houston was one of the most popular girls in school and she was pretty much friends with everyone. they graduated back in 1981. at tonight's grammy

awards, a special tribute to whitney houston. the yeardley love trial is expected to continue tomorrow morning. prosecutors get ready to wrap up their case with hughley. jurors already heard a two hour police interrogation, officially hughley denied knowing love was dead, saying i didn't even hit her, i can't even believe it. but later hughley admitted putting his hands around love's neck. mike burns walked in on hughley choke love. hughley sent burns an e-mail

saying, when i found out ability you and love i should have killed you. >> the medical examiner said it was blunt trauma. it was for banging her head against the wall. >> reporter: arguing love's death was nothing but an accident. prosecutors do have to convince the jury that the murder was premeditated. if they want to get life in prison, if the defense is convincing, hughley could serve 10 years on a manslaughter conviction. stay with wjz with more on the murder trial. i will be live from virginia. an investigation is underway tonight after a deadly shooting in northeast baltimore. it happened around 2:30 this morning on lacalve road.

clinton stanton was found there with multiple gun wounds in the stomach. anyone with information is asked to call police. good news for frequent fliers. traveling through vwi getting through security may be a lot faster thanks to a new program that the airport will take part in later on this year. derek valcourt explains how works and who's eligible, derek. >> reporter: tsa officials really call this a good year. essentially they say if you sign up and give them information about yourself ahead of time in return, you get to go through a sort of security express lane. there's no way around airport security. >> it's a pain in the neck. >> reporter: but the tsa wants to make that pain a little more bearable. frequent fliers will be able to sign up ahead of time for a prescreening background check. those who pass won't have to wait in those long tsa lines and won't have to take off their shoes, jackets and belts when they go through security. >> so this is all voluntary.

if you are a frequent flier, you fly 200,000 miles a year, you want to be considered for that, that's fine. >> the program has already been tested at a few select cities. they're adding the program to 2,000 more airports including baltimore. >> it's part of a fundamental shift in how we approach aviation security. >> reporter: at vwi most travelers are excited about the plan but a few have reservations. >> i think it's a great idea. >> especially for people, like me going to college and back home. it'll be very convenient. >> i don't think anybody should move in heist when it comes to security. >> reporter: southwest airlines which has the most flights of any airline out of vwi here, says they will not be participating in the trusted traveler program at least for now. they say they are too busy

right now working on their upcoming merger with air tran airline. derek valcourt, wjz news. >> a lot of changes at the airport coming up. a heartfelt celebration for many families today at st. joe's hospital. the hospital held a sweetheart baby reunion. the event brings together a lot of babies that were cared for by the hospital's neonatal staff. >> we have issues where i kept having preterm labor and had to get hospitalized. that was probably for about two months i stayed here at st. joe's. then jacob was born february 16th. full term babies and their families are part of the reunion. power ball fever comes to an end and one lucky couple

midnight on a bill with a plan to cut the minimum wage. after nearly two weeks of delays because of rough seas and bad weather the pumping began this morning in italy on the contra concordia. crews are now working around the clock in hopes of avoiding an environmental disaster. >> this is the first oil from the costa concordia. we're very happy and things are going smoothly. we have finally have some favorable weather to keep them pumping throughout the night. that pumping operation is expected to take between three weeks and a month. travelers have been waiting for this day for months. the airline will fly to five

we're sitting here chuckling right now. because of course today on all the day is the day my son wanted to spend an hour at the playground. but hey you bundle up and you'll be fine. >> and you run around to keep warm. >> yeah it was fine. >> it was a cold day out there today. we know it's winter but we haven't had much of it this winter. i want to show you what's going on today. we have this wind that's brought in the arctic blast. these are sustained winds. generally 15 to 15 miles per hour. we've had gusts over 45 miles per hour and this is the kind of air it has brought in. we are already dropping, we've already peaked today. but we're down to 29 degrees in baltimore. 17 in oakland. notice the dewpoint way down to 10 degrees. that's how dry this air is.

as these winds die down. these temperatures are going to drop. so windshield right now is in the teens. overnight, we drop down to 8 degrees at vwi marshall for our winter. so it was a bitterly cold one. we did top out at 48 degrees. that is it. our average is now 44. we're going to get closer to that because as cold as this is it's not going to last that long. temperatures already starting to rebound. the dark colors we were tracking yesterday already starting to cycle themselves out. so we have another cold one tonight. by tomorrow, the temperatures get closer to the average. and then after tomorrow they're going back above average. another thing going on. a couple of flurries coming down. snow piling up. there's not a whole lot to this storm as it passes through tomorrow night into tuesday.

there is some possibilities for rain and snow as it makes its way through. after it gets out of here it takes the arctic temperatures with it and the temperatures are going back up instead of down. small craft advisory is going up. we're going down to 19 degrees. then tomorrow we're back up to 40. for the next couple of days we have a couple of storms we're tracking. the first one is monday night into tuesday. gets out of here wednesday. then the next one comes our way wednesday night into thursday. now we will have some milder air but some rain and snow are possible with it. >> kind of a mess, bern. thanks so much. >> basketball weekend. >> you know the hottest team. loyolla. today however, i'll tell you ♪
