it is day six on the high profile trial where a former university of virginia student faces life in prison. >> reporter: very dramatic details on what the doctor found in the autopsy. basically saying the beautiful woman from baltimore county was bruised from head to toe. medical experts and police paint a picture of a violent struggle between former uva lacrosse players huguely and love. in court jurors heard the medical examiner going into great detail. showing pictures of the autopsy he conducted on love. her inner cheek cut by her own teeth. love had bruises to her head,

arms and buttox. love also suffered hemorrhaging in the neck. an officer took the stand and said huguely had bruises on his hand and knuckles when they first arrested him. defense attorneys questioning police about huguely's injuries are illuding to the fact that some of the bruise of the bruises may have been caused by lacrosse. when photos were put on projection screen for the jurors to see, huguely started paying close attention to the trial. the defense is going to start get started on its case probably in the next couple of

tribute to its most well known allumni. >> it's very sad. >> reporter: students walked from the school to houston's childhood home as they remembered the woman who inspired generations. in los angeles, shaban, wjz eyewitness news. and again, houston's body is being flown back to new jersey where a funeral will be held later in the week. and as her funeral is being planned in new jersey, the world of music is remembering whitney houston for her powerful influence and talent. mary bubala continues our coverage. >> the grammy awards played part in an impromptu memorial for houston. just a day after the singer was found dead. >> there is no way around this. we've had a death in our family. >> there's late world tonight that singer whitney houston has died.

lower in the evening hours. we are still close to 43. these temperatures are much warmer than we were 24 hours ago. as many as 15, 16 degrees warmer than we saw yesterday. yesterday one of the top five cold days of this entire winter. high was only 26 degrees. today we get up to the upper 40s. bernadette has a look at what's headed our way for tomorrow. bernadette. >> reporter: that plays into the clouds coming our direction. temperatures are going to be very close to that freezing mark. what you see out to the west is going to weaken significantly as it moves our way. on top of that we have a lot of dry air sitting over maryland. what we're expecting during those early morning, maybe predawn hours a couple of range of snow showers are possible. during the afternoon, maybe a few rain showers but then this gets out of here. temperatures behind it go back into the 50s. we'll have your forecast coming

up, back inside. thank you, bernadette and bob. a man who interacted closely with students in school is arrested after sexual abuse allegations are made against him. he was arrested after a girl claimed he molested her. the school says shelley was not an employee, just a parent who attended school activities. a former penn state football coach jerry sandusky is in trial today. >> reporter: the judge released information in a jury on sandusky's trial and makes a decision on whether or not he can see his grandchildren. the jury will be composed of residents of the college and around the area. sandusky faces 52 criminal counts for what prosecutors claimed was sexual abuse of 10 boys over a 15 year period.

he has denied those allegations, vic. >> jessica, thank you. the judge asked to have a tentative trial date of february 28th. city police now say you can record them on the job but that's not enough to satisfy a federal judge. mike hellgren takes an in-depth look into a lawsuit on what is legal. >> you are indeed allowed to record police. but a judge paves the way for a trial that can better -- >> turn that out. it's illegal to tape anybody's voice or anything else. >> reporter: it stems from this video taken at the preakness 2010. police took his phone and deleted the video. >> it's awful the way i felt then, the way i feel now about it. the humiliation was enormous,

if they're doing this to me who else are they doing this to. >> reporter: the city police wanted to release the case. mandating that people are allowed to record them fixing the problem. >> the majority of the departments in the nation, we're one of the first agencys to promilgate rules. >> reporter: but just hours after that policy went public. an officer is threatening a man with arrest. >> reporter: sharp's lawyer used it to keep their case alive in court. >> these are fundamental constitutional rights. they affect citizens everywhere. not just in baltimore but this is a problem we're seeing nationally. >> reporter: sharp knows he's in for a long battle though, his case could take months to resolve. and he's ready to fight. >> i really just want to see

usaa. we know what it means to serve. baltimore's mayor outlined aggressive goals. live now at city hall with more on the mayor's remarks, derek valcourt. >> reporter: the mayor wants to lower property taxes and increase funding for school construction all in an effort to bring 18,000 new families into baltimore city over the next 10 years. >> need to get baltimore growing again. >> reporter: mayor stephanie blake says it's time to cut property taxes by 10% of home values. the 18 year plan means the average homeowner would see a

$40 reduction by next year $400 by the year 2020 on a $120,000 home. >> on this year, vacant lots do not qualify, and specklators and owners of blithed property won't get a penny of tax relief at the expense of everyone else. >> another concern the mayor addressed the condition of many city school buildings. >> i am truly embarrassed by the physical condition of some of our schools. too many are without air- conditioning to keep kids in the classroom on hot spring days, too few computer labs, too many with water fountains that you can't drink from. >> reporter: she will submit a plan called the better schools initiative calls for 140% increase in school construction funding paid for in part by an increase in the beverage container tax. residents will soon see more officers on bikes and foot patrol and she says the city will add 20 more cameras to

trouble areas in baltimore. she credits the cameras with reduced crime. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. okay, derek. thank you. the mayor also announced the proposed extension of the purple line all the way up to 33rd street in hopes to connect the hopkins station with penn station. it is a terrible way to die and it is killed turtles here. a virus that infects frogs has somehow managed to jump to turtles with lethal results. >> reporter: you're looking at a box turtle fighting for breath. researchers from towson university discovered it dying from an infection called rino virus. infected turtles were found in reserves cut out for them in

montgomery county. they also found dead tadpoles and salamanders that carry the virus. but-- >> it apparently has jump from frogs to box turtles. their eyes get very swollen. their eyes get a white plaque in their mouth and it slobs out and they have problems with breathing, feeding and eventually they die. >> when the icc opened it wasn't without protest from environmentalists. >> this road is an abomination. deforestation, wetlands removed. >> reporter: they have seen it a few other times in turtles in other maryland counties but not in the numbers found in montgomery county. the virus has been in the u.s. for many years. why it's hitting so hard is a big question. >> it could be nature's under stress right now. and this is a symptom of that. >> alex demetrick, wjz

bob is in the weather center. nice day today bob. >> yeah. >> it was beautiful monday. really. after a very cold arctic air yesterday. we haven't had too many. we've only had five days like

yesterday all winter long. 30, 31, 32 degrees. today we warm way back up. look at temperatures right know, still at or above average. 43 here, 46 in washington. 31 the cold spot in oakland. and they do have any where from five to eight or 10-inches of snow on the ground still in far western maryland. they have quite a bit over the last several days. 38 in ocean city now. 41 up in oakland. these clouds will be lowering and thickening late tonight. 40, 40 in bell air. so will not be nearly as cold tonight as it was last night but it may be just cold enough as we said in the morning and some dry air could produce some cooling. you might see a little bit of wet snow in the morning and then we go right to some light rain shower activity. 48 today after 20 this morning. the average temperature, average high is 44, average low 26. the record 72 and one in 1983. right now the winds are beginning to turn to the northwest. that is going to bring in

milder air. with the milder air initially some of that warm air over top of the cooler surface here at the ground may create a little bit of wet snow for just a very short time. you can see very light precipitation. and then a little rain shower activity. and it stays in the mild side really for the rest of the week. this is a very weak system behind it. temperatures rebounding into the 60s again. bay temp around 40. so tonight increasing clouds already seeing that. 29 to the low to mid-30s in the city. then tomorrow back up to the upper 40s maybe rain or snow shower in the morning. then maybe a left over rain shower in the afternoon. but another milder afternoon and warmer with the sun coming back. temperatures will be above normal once again. >> aren't we lucky. still to come tonight on wjz eyewitness news. violent riots in greece tonight, what's mind the

it is 6:30, 43 degrees and partly cloudy in central maryland. good evening thanks for staying with wjz. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. chaos in the streets of greece. riot police are struggling. more on the reason for the widespread anger. >> crews cleaned up the streets of athens after crowds rioted overnight. there's still widespread anger in greece after the government

decided on drastic new spending cuts. protesters burned dozens of buildings in the capital sunday. hundreds took on riot police, pelting them with rocks. despite the violence, the parliament passed a measure. the finance minister told politician they must save the country. saying the citizens won't forgive us if we don't. but they slashed minimum wage and one in every seven workers will lose their jobs. unemployment in greece is already over 20%. markets reacted positively. the athens stock exchange rose 5% on monday. as greece braces for more protests, european union finance chiefs will meet on wednesday to decide whether to

approve the massive bail out package. but the greek government must convince european lenders it will stick to the plan. tina krauss, wjz eyewitness news. now bankruptcy could force greece to stop using the euro current cy. - - currency. it could also drag down other european markets into turmoil. four people were hurt in the attacks including the diplomat's wife and four other people in the car. israel is blaming iran but iran denies any involvement in the attacks. crews are sifting through a landfill. searching for clues in the case of a utah man who killed himself and his two children in a house fire. monique griego is live. >> reporter: dozens of

deficit. he's pitching a $3.8 billion plan which includes $350 billion to stimulate job growth. the president told a crowd of supporters at a northern virginia community college that 8 billion would be dedicated to help schools train workers. >> at a time when our economy is growing and creating jobs at a faster clip we have to do everything in our power to keep this recovery on track. >> reporter: the president renewed his calls for tax hikes on the wealthy and he wants to stop tax breaks for big corporations. but the president's budget does not stand a chance in congress. republican lawmakers quickly shut down his proposals dismissing them as bad for job creation. >> rather than threading water he actually makes things worse. >> reporter: and they say his budget does nothing to cut the deficit. >> somebody asked me if this

rescue crews in kosovo have a moment of cheer after a girl was found. more than 5,000 deaths have been attributed to the snow and bitter cold in europe over the last few days. the delicate task of removing fuel from the contra concordia has begun. the contra concordia ran aground two months ago. a fire destroys the popular ski lodge in western pennsylvania this weekend. when fire crews arrived at the scene the building was fully engulfed in flames and spewing heavy smoke. high winds caused the winds to spread fast. the building was still smolders

well, wheels are spinning in college park. mark is here with the fan sports report. >> other than fancy uniforms the team there has been going through some tough times that's for sure. when a new coach comes in. it's common for players to leave. there's been an exdouse today three more hit the door. mario rouse and quarterback danny o'brien. o'brien was the conference quarterback of the year. last season was the first under etzel. o'brien had to share time.

etzel says he is disappointed for o'brien's decision to leave. the release agreement blocks o'brien from going to vanderbilt where former terp's offensive coordinator james franklin is now the head coach. 24 players have left the maryland football team since etzel was hired in january of last year. and there are some growing pains on the maryland basketball team under first year coach mark turgen. these guys were beaten at duke this weekend and during that loss, terrell stognlan was bench for 12 minutes total. sogland used twitter to comment about being benched. he later apologized. he expects the sophomore to learn from the experience and be better when maryland plays boston college on thursday. to the in fact, where ravens kicker billy condit will always be known as the guy who missed theeasy field goal on the afc game. condit says the reaction to him

has been better than he expected. speaking to reporters in his home state of iowa, condit says he's impressed with the reaction because he expected more backlash. condit's miss on the 32-yard field goal was the first in his career in a play off game and it cost the ravens a chance to go to overtime. condit was honored this weekend in des moines. he has not been back to baltimore this season. -- he says he's ready for a come back after a brief retirement. moss has played 16 seasons. the ravens are being mentioned as a possible match for moss which is a case any time a receiver is available. spring comes early in baseball. the seattle mariners are the first team to begin spring training taking the field at their camp in arizona. the mariners and oakland a's both get early spring starts
