construction chaos. the gas main break in south baltimore. >> the concern, after services cut to hundreds of people. hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> we're going to begin with that breaking news. a major gas main break in southwest baltimore. wjz is live. captain mike perry with more. captain mike? >> reporter: this all occurred around 3:30 this morning. a four-inch gas main was struck by the department of public works employees. this occurred in the 300 block of millington avenue. this is in southwest baltimore, near the southwest shopping center. apparently the water main broke, causing water to go into the broken gas main that dpw was woing on. now, we do know that immediately the gas had to be shut off to the area. now, this is affecting at least

900 customers right near the southwest shopping center. we do have bge on the scene and extensive bge response. nearly 50 bge vehicles, as well as a bge command post, and a fire command post, are in the rear of the west side shopping center. mark is showing that to you now. now, it is likely going to be several days before bge can effect this repair. there is water has gone into the gas main, and that causes problems. bge is also digging in an area south of west side shopping center. so expect not only a lot. gas disruption here in the area for folks. but also the possibility of traffic problems, as bge vehicles, extensive amount of bge vehicles being in the area. back to you on tv hill. >> captain mike, thank you. we will have more on this developing story coming up new at 5:00 and 6:00. wjz is following another developing story. the future of same-sex marriage bill is in the balance.

injust minutes, a critical vote is expected in a house committee. the vote will take place in a joint meeting of the house judiciary committee and health and operations governnt committee. if it passes, the measure moves on to the house of delegates. wjz will keep you updated on the vote as soon as we have it. whitney's final sendoff. new details today about the family's plan to say goodbye. alison harmelin reports for wjz, there will be no public memorial. >> reporter: whitney houston's funeral will be held saturday, in the church in newark, new jersey, where she was first discovered. a family spokesman says the service will be private and personal. no wake or public memorial have been planned. >> they have shared her for 30- something years with the city, with the state, with the world. this is their time now. >> reporter: fans of the singer have been streaming past the church and the funeral home where her body was brought monday night. >> i always said to myself, i want to be just like her. you know? and i just want her to rest.

>> reporter: houston sang here as a child, at new hope baptist church. her mother, sissy warren led the music. and her cousin, dionne warwick led the choir. >> ♪ and i will always love you ♪ >> reporter: houston was one of the best selling artists, until she starltsed using-- started using drugs and alcohol. she was found dead saturday in the water of a bathtub in a hotel. some prescription drugs were found in the hotel room, but police say no more than most people have at home. investigators are waiting for toxicology results before discussing the death. houston's godmother, aretha franklin honored her by singing one of houston's biggest hits. >> i'll always love you ♪ >> reporter: and asked the crowd to pray for the family. >> houston leaves behind an 18- year-old daughter with her ex-

husband bobby brown. in virginia today, more chilling medical testimony today in the george huguely murder trial. huguely, from silver springs is charged with first-degree murder in the death of yeardley love. a neuropatholgist testified that love suffered from blunt force trauma. the prosecution hopes to counter huguely's claim that he and love had a physical fight but that he did not kill her. stay with wjz and wjz.com for complete coverage of the huguely trial. we'll have more on today's testimony. all new at 5:00 and 6:00. today, britney norwood is behind bars, serving life in prison for the murder of her lulu lemon coworker. today, we see her.

jessica kartalija has a look at newly-released tape recordings. >> reporter: these were released one week after police found jayna murray's body inside the upscale store. norwood tries to convince police she and murray were robbed and then attacked. she is very convincing to the novemberit, and she-- novice, and she even cries. >> prior to him sexually assaulting me, they made me move her car. >> reporter: this video of the apple store, next too lulu-- to lulu lemon is disturbing. it shows employees listening to the brutal attack, but not doing a whole lot, even though they do hear some cries for help. not one person, apparently, called police. after several interviews with police, norwood did not confess, but began to contradict herself. >> norwood was convicted last month, in murray's murder.

and is serving life in prison, without the possibility of parole. baltimore police are looking for another man who is threatening. >> reporter: the man with the camera says he takes a lot of videos in his neighborhood. but as you're about to see, it's his most recent video that is adding to the controversy over how city police officers handle citizens with video cameras. >> reporter: this video of officers making an arrest in federal hill just one day after baltimore's police commissioner issued in new policy. saying members of the public are allowed to videotape police officers in a public setting. but that policy apparently had no effect saturday issue as that video was being shot. >> take a walk, sir. >> you're standing in front of the border. i'm asking you to leave. >> reporter: officers never tell the man holding the camera to stop recording, instead, they tell him he's loitering,

threatening to arrest him if he doesn't leave the scene immediately. >> turn around and walk. >> i'm leaving. >> turn around and walk. give me your id. >> reporter: the commissioner says they are looking into this video. and the man who shot it is filing a complaint against the department. the federal judge refusesfuses to throw out a similar lawsuit in 2010, when they shot these videos, shot by christopher sharp, as has friend was being arrested at the preakness. >> do me a favor and turn that off. >> i was threatened by police officers, being told it was evidence and i had to give it to them. so what else am i supposed to do? >> reporter: the lawsuit is supported by the justice department and the aclu. it could take months to resolve. >> reporter: mayor stephanie rawlings-blake says she agrees with the police department's new videotaping policy, but she says, there has to be a balance to protect officers who put their lives on the line. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness

news. >> reporter: and new at 5:00, wjz speaks to the man who shot the latest video that sparks the controversy. baltimore city councilman jack young is a crime victim. young's east baltimore home was broken into last night. young lives in the 900 block of pennsylvania avenue. young's wife came home at 11:00 last night, noticed a window open, but nothing was taken from the home. a police report was filed. rick santorum's momentum is putting him in the leaders seat. danielle notingham reports for wjz. this comes as we enter the february lull in the election cycle. >> reporter: rick santorum greeted supporters in tacoma, washington, as the leader in the gop presidential race. >> it's great to be here. >> reporter: santorum tops a new cbs news, new york times poll of republican primary voters nationwide. he's opened a small lead over mitt romney. the former pennsylvania senator climbed to the top with the

help of conservatives. he had a 14-point lead over romney, and is 26 points ahead of newt gingrich. with gingrich losing four straight contests, and some suggesting he drop out, santorum is starting to see this as a two-man race with romney. the former house speaker says, not so fast. >> that's exactly what i said when i said rick should have dropped out weeks ago. and she decided that wasn't a good idea and he was right. >> reporter: there is a latest caution. 60% of those surveyed say it's too early to decide who they will support. >> reporter: arizona and michigan hold the next contest. michigan is where romney grew up and his father served as governor. >> now, i grew up in michigan. >> he unveiled a new adtuesday, reminding voters of his roots in the state. but recent results put santorum in the lead. >> he may actually win michigan. and what does that do to the romney campaign? it's hard to say. but it's not good. >> reporter: santorum is also

running ads in michigan. both candidates are headed there to campaign later this week. at the white house, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. the santorum and romney cams will both be going up with tv ads in michigan today and will likely stay on the air until election day. we are on a bit of a weather plateau in maryland. outside right now, it's a carbon copy of yesterday. partly sunny, dry, mild conditions. wjz has weather and traffic together. we'll talk to kristy in a second. but first, meteorologist bernadette woods is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. hello, bern. >> hello, everybody out there. since earlier today, we're seeing signs of that storm making its way across the state. couple of showers out there right now. nothing all that heavy. but they are making their way across this state. and everything at this point is light. and this storm for the most part, has really fallen apart. and mostly we're seeing clouds. but there are a couple of spotty showers. as far as temperatures go, even with the clouds, we got to 53 degrees.

a kentucky man is facing charges, after police say he was going to let a 12-year-old drive him home. >> he's doing what? >> he's all over the road. in the 3 lane, before we hit

the 2 lane, he was swerving back and forth, into all three lanes. >> reporter: now, police say the man was pulled over and behind the wheel. when he got pulled over, he told his 12-year-old passenger to get into the driver's seat. the young boy told police the man asked him to drive because he was too drunk. police haven't said what the between the -- relationship between the two is or why a 12-year-old was out at 2:00 in the morning. imagine eating dessert to lose weight? the study divided 103 obese adults into two groups. one had a low-carb dessert while the other did didn't. those -- didn't. those who had the dessert lost more. they say the key is to eat dessert in the morning when your metabolism is most active.

oyster survival rate is the highest it's been in 15 years. >> reporter: for the first time since 1997, a maryland survey finds oysters have hit a 92% survival rate, against diseases that have killed massive numbers in the past. >> there are hints of disease resistance further south. we are not sure of that in maryland. but it could be that some decease is developing. -- disease is developing. >> reporter: that's half the news. they are finding baby oysters that attached to older shells. >> a lot of young oysters from last year set and hopefully if the disease doesn't affect them and they grow out, then we'll have some oysters in a couple of years. >> reporter: but if oysters are showing promise in the southern part of the bay, it's a different story in the north. >> reporter: after tropical weather flooded the bay with fresh water at the end of last summer, some oyster bars were

wiped out. >> they probably died when the tropical storm, the salinity dropped. we had 100% mortality. >> reporter: and when there were only empty shells, there was no catch. >> most everybody doesn't didn't -- didn't have a choice. they had to live up here. >> reporter: and if disease is building, along with future stocks here. >> we're excited with what we're seeing in the bay right now. >> reporter: alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> the current survival rate is more than double what it was 10 years ago, when disease killed 58% of the bay's oyster. >> reporter: speaking of the bay, a bit of a choppy day on wall street. more uncertainty in greece dragged the markets down for most of the day. but the dow did end up 4. nasdaq up a fraction. let's go to new york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. americans were spending last month. but not as much as expected. retail sales rose 4/10ths of a% in january.

-- a percent in january. about half of what was spent in january. people spent more on restaurants and electronics but less on cars. and higher gas prices also means many americans spent their money at the gas station. economic growth in greece contracted by 7%. that that is worse than expected. greece is trying to secure desperately needed bailout funds and avoid bankruptcy. indonesian carrier, lion air, has 22 planes. lion air also has the right to buy 150 more. and the popular game, angry birds, is now locate the in a new, very popular location, to tempt gamers. it is now on facebook, which has millions of users worldwide. florists are seeing lots of green this valentine's day.

welcome back, everybody. we have a few showers coming out of those clouds. it is all part of the same clouds that is moving through. we have sunshine that appeared during the afternoon. here's the next round of that storms. and here are the showers that is move across the state. none of this is heavy. but over the next couple of hours, scattered showers are possible in a couple of different locations. you can see anywhere in baltimore county. straight up 95 and straight back to frederick. switch it over and show you, here's how it comes together. not a whole lot this morning. then the clouds even broke up. because the air has been so dry on top of us. right now, we are seeing a couple of showers out of here

before the stms move through tonight. winds are still out of the south. that is bringing up the warmer air. it's 53 degrees, despite the clouds we've had around today. and look at all of these areas, way above average. our average temperature is still on the way up. we're at 53 degrees. we started off the day even above freezing, at 53. here's the storm. it's going to wrap up and going to get out of here, fizzlingas it gets out of the mountains there. behind it, a little dry air before we deal with the next storm. tomorrow, clouds with sunshine. and then we'll see the clouds increase once again as the next storm approaches us. but also, take a note upstream. there is just no arctic air. here's how that looks when we put that together here. just out there, to our west, we do have another storm that is going to move our way. and when it does, it's going to bring in the clouds tomorrow night. then the chance for rain. and it looks to be rain on thursday, as this storm is not going to be a big one and cuts off to our west.

that's what we could see with that storm. after that, though, it gets out of here. and we still stay above average for the end of the week. so the forecast looks like this, on the water, small craft advisory, still in effect. through tomorrow. and tonight. a couple of showers possible. as we head through the overnight hours, that will end, lingering clouds down to 34 degrees. and tomorrow, clouds mixing with sunshine. we're back up into the 50s. 53 degrees for our high tomorrow. clouds come back in tomorrow night, with rain on thursday. but again, we're talking rain as this mild winter continues. and we'll have a graphic about that, coming up at 5:00 and 6:00. it's just incredible how far above average we had have been. >> and it continues. >> yes. you keep thinking the bubble is going to burst. we're running out of time. one luy person is really enjoying this valentine's day. jessica kartalija has the winner of the gift card contest. >> it's not us.

another crisis in his media empire. there are rumors murdoch may shut down his flagship paper, the sun, after several of his top journalists are arrested. >> reporter: rupert murdoch is expected to return to london this week in a desperate crisis that won't go away. in fact, it just got worse. now he's facing a showdown at the newsroom of the crowned jewel, the british empire. they're the result of an internal bribery investigation, triggering predawn raids in what staffers called a heavy- handed witch hunt. >> if the defense proportion does need to be restored, then you wind down some of the activities. why do you need 20 police officers to raid the home of a single journalist? >> reporter: murdoch may be coming to assure some employees. wulast time -- but last time they were in this much trouble, news of the world shut it down.

from murdoch's paper hasn't come from a few bad apples but an entire orchard. kai jackson is in the newsroom with more on the appeal. >> reporter: prosecutors want to reinstate the murder convictions of knox and her former boyfriend, in the brutal killing of a british student. it's been more than a month since the appeals court threw out the murder convictions of knox and solecheto. now, the prosecutor's appeal is the third and final stage in the criminal case against knox and so11ito. >> reporter: the high court is expected to issue its decision at the end of the year. volunteers found what police call a testament with powell's name on it. some books with his wife's name on it. and a utah map. powell dropped off those items. he was a person of interest in

the 2009 disappearance of his wife, susan. family members of the victim still missing after the costa concordia cruise ship tragedy gathered to pay respects to their loved ones. the group came together in giglio, throwing bouquets and flowers into the ocean. it's all part of a silent memorial. later that night, a mass was held to remember all of those victims. a church escaped the sinking ship last month. president obama welcomes the vice president of china and shares insight into the relationship between the two countries. the president offered warm greetings to china's heir- apparent, even amid sharp policy differences. speaking besides vice president chi in the oval office, the president says they welcome the rise. china's vice president is being watched closely. he is slated to become china's communist leader in the fall and president in 2013. police in anne arundel county make an arrest after a

woman says she was sexually assaulted inside a home improvement store. it happened at the lowe's on richie on glen burnie highway. she said she was in this store when this man, samuel garish, touched her inappropriately and ran off. officers found him across the street. police catch a man wanted for robbing homes in baltimore county. they say 20-year-old alvin thompson turn today himself -- turned himself in. he was wanted for robbing two homes. investigators say thompson tried to sell the stolen property at pawn shops throughout the area. it's official. flu season is here. but it took a while for it to start. mary bubala has a new report. >> reporter: the cdc is reporting an uptick in the number of samples being positive for the flu. it is compared to almost 8% the week before. researchers say these numbers suggest they are just off to a

late start. this is only the second time in almost 30 years the percentage of positive test samples was under 10% through january. denise? >> reporter: thank you, mary. flu season typically hits as early as october and can hit as late as may. we had a very nice day today. can we see some rain tonight? we'll has weather and traffic together. bob turk is here now with the updated numbers. >> reporter: we had morning clouds. a lot of sun most of the day. temperatures again, above the 50-degree mark. way above our average. right now, we do have those clouds. and yes, there are actually a few sprinkles and showers that developed this afternoon. but they'll be moving through rather quickly. do not expect a wet night, maybe a few showers in the ne couple of hours. all in all, a very mild day, coming up tomorrow. once again, temperatures in the low 50s. this week -- weak system moving way off to the east, means it's going to be replaced by a good deal of sunshine. and above-normal temperatures. pretty much the rest of the week. next chance of rain will be

the parents of a florida a&m student, who died during a suspected hazing incident, are suing the owner and driver of a bus where it happened. robert champion died after allegedly being punched by fellow band members. the lawsuit suggests that the bus driver knew about the hazing rituals and did nothing about them. all band activities have been suspended, pending investigation. a new investigation into abuse at california schools. a 42-year-old high schoolteacher's aide is being held without bail for sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl. this comes shortly after two arrests at an elementary school just miles away. two teachers at mira monty elementary school are charged with abuse. police do not believe their

crimes are related. it appears osama bin laden may have advised his children and grandchildren in not to follow in his footsteps. kai has more on the new reports in al qaeda. family members say osama bin laden urged his children to walk a different path with their lives. according to bin laden's brother-in-law, he told his family to not live his life. military analysts, though, are skeptical about that claim, saying there is nothing about bin laden's history to indicate such a change in dramatic view. bin laden was buried at sea. >> analysts also point out that bin laden said he would rather die with his children than live with them in europe. trying to owftd the president as calls for an

international peacekeeping team to come in. >> reporter: government troops bombarded the rebel city of holmes, for the 11th straight day. this amateur video shows what is reported as some of the heaviest shelling yet. there are fears rising of civil war. >> the longer the international community fails fails to take action, the more the civilian population will suffer, from countless atrocities, committed against them. >> reporter: the u.s. is backing up plans to send international peacekeepers to damascus to stop the violence. >> we stand with the syrian people. and we are looking for a peaceful resolution. >> reporter: but clinton says syria's allies could stand in the way. the assault on holmes began the same day that russia and china vetoed a resolution, calling for president bashar assad to step down. but china's premiere vowed tuesday to work with the u.n. to end the killing, saying it's
