this is wjz tv, wjz hd, and wjz.com, baltimore. >> from the city to the counties to your neighborhood. now it's complete coverage, it's wjz. maryland's news station. no water and no gas. hundreds of homes and businesses are crippled by a utility mistake. >> how long it could take to get back to normal. hello, everyone. >> here's what people are talking about tonight. >> a baltimore community is bracing for what could be days without heat or hot water. crews are working almost 24 hours after a water main repair caused a gas main break. we're live in southwest baltimore and we have the progress crews are making tonight. >> reporter: the water is back on, so that is some good news. the gas remains off and right now the city and pge are asking

residents to be patient. chopper 13 is over a public utility nightmare in southwest baltimore. >> pge is also digging in an area west of the shopping center. >> reporter: the problem start t around 3:30 tuesday morning. a public works crew was doing something to a water main and at some point, a piece of asphalt fell on a four-inch gas line and broke it. amanda has water and electricity but no gas and two sick kids. >> my house is freezing, i had to go buy electric heaters. >> reporter: natural gas is highly volatile. >> damage occurs to our gas mains as a result of that damage, the gas main has gotten water into it. we have to get that water out. you can't have water in a gas main. >> reporter: the city is telling residents it could be sometime before gas service is restored. about 100 residents lost water

service for a period of time before it was restored. about 900 people were affected by the gas line break. they needed access to each home to shut off the gas. the company summoned an army of workers to do that. >> that's a labor-intensive process. we have people going door to door so we can get access. >> reporter: this is an active scene right now. bge still out here working. it will be days before the gas service is restored. as for the water, it might be brown for a period of time, but if you take off the aerator under the faucet, shake it out, let the water run, it should be fine. >> thank you very much. if you've been affected, you can call bge to schedule your gas turn off. a man is in shock, trauma tonight after he was crushed by a tractor. the man was working on the machine this afternoon in

whiteford when the jack collapsed and he was pinned underneath. we are told he's in serious condition. baltimore police officers caught on tape threatening a man who was video taping them. the tape surfaced just after the department announced it's perfectly legal for people to record police activities. we talk to the man who shot that video. >> reporter: it's early saturday morning in federal hills, six officers all huddle around a man who appears to be detained. >> didn't know what was going on. it was just, it was happening. it was life. i have a camera. i'm supposed to be able to take video. >> reporter: he's right, at least according to new police policy issued friday in response to court challenges. but watch what happens next. >> take a walk, sir.

tweeted some poor guy got arrested on craw street and went to bed. >> reporter: for now, he's not planning any legal action, though he says they should admit their mistake and apologize. the aclu appears to agree. they've asked for a copy of his video. >> a police spokesman would not comment on the story citing the pending investigation. a key hurdle is cleared in the fight over same-sex marriage. two house committees passed the marriage bill by a 25-18 vote. tomorrow it faces an uncertain future. the governor says he needs to sway republicans for it to pass. experts testify about her injuries and what killed her. >> reporter: both sides spent the seventh day of this trial

trying to spin the medical evidence in their favor. i had a brief conversation with yardley love's mother outside the courthouse. she was polite and gracious to relive this awful tragedy. she left the courtroom during graphic testimony about her daughter's cause of death. speaking briefly, only with wjz, she expressed gratitude to all the people supporting her back in baltimore. hours telling jurors aut the fatal injuries to love's brain. using a plastic skull and brain, they explained how blunt force trauma killed her. scott goodman is a prominent local attorney. >> it's by far the longest, most sensational, notorious case that's ever happened in charlottesville. >> reporter: he faces life in prison if he's convicted. they need to prove premeditation. they've introduced a threatening e-mail sent two days before the

beating. testimony from another lacrosse player and love's bedroom door allegedly kicked in by huguely the night of their confrontation. >> hours later she's dead. yes, the e-mail he said he was going to do that to her and it happened, strong, powerful evidence. >> reporter: virginia's laws regarding premeditation are tough. it's why defense attorneys keep reminding jurors that huguely was drunk. it's resulted in lesser convictions in other cases. >> this is a classic heat of passion manslaughter-type killing that is by rage and being mad and angry in the course of a relationship. >> reporter: throughout the course of the trial, the defense attorneys have been trying to argue that love's brain injuries could have been caused by cpr. both of the doctors said that was simply not possible.

cigarette lighter blew up. >> reporter: he died 28 days later leaving his family to piece together what went wrong. they hired experts to deconstruct bill's accident. they concluded design flaws caused bill's lighter to fail and produce this animation showing how. after bill lit his cigarette, the lighter should have shut off, but instead the experts say a small flame continued to burn hidden under the flame guard. fuel leaked out, evaporated into bill's clothes, heated and caused fire. the government agency that oversees lighter safety knew about the problem. >> they had all the information and they just ignored it. yeah, ignored it. >> reporter: the safety commission concluded that 70% of chinese lighters failed to live up to u.s. voluntary standards and lighter malfunctions caused over 900 injuries each year. they say in a statement lighter safety is important but right
