the new hope baptist church in newark, has turned into a giant shrine to whitney houston. >> right now, it hurts me because she she's a great person. she's also a great singer. and there ain't nobody that can be like her. >> we know we couldn't be here saturday. but we wanted this to be a tribute to her today. >> reporter: houston's family has chosen to keep today's funeral services private. marvin winans will deliver the eulogy at the church where whitney sang as a child. >> she wore fame, and she was wonderful in it. but she was always that little girl from new jersey. >> reporter: pastor winan says he expects saturday to be a celebration of houston's life. a number of celebrities, including her god mother, aretha franklin, are expected to attend the service. >> reporter: the 48-year-old was found dead in a hotel saturday. the court has issued subpoenas

for pharmacy and medical records from her doctors. houston's old child, daughter, bobbie christina, is said to be doing much better, after being hospitalized sunday. her father, bobby brown, said she would prefer to deal with her mother's death, outside the public eye. >> i just say to bobbie, give it to god. only god can see you through this. >> reporter: fans are still hoping for a public memorial sometime down the road. in newark, new jersey, randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> testimony continues for the 8th day in charlottesville, virginia. george huguely is on trial for murdering his ex-girlfriend, yeardley love. >> reporter: prosecutors are focusing on the final hours leading up to love's death. they said the day before love's body was found, huguely was sloppy drunk at a father and son golf tournament. they also testified that

huguely had lied and said he was with friends when he had actually gone to love's off- campus apartment. later that day, they say huguels whole demeanor had changed, he had a blank stare on his face. his college friend also said that huguely had been drinking so heavily prior to love's death, they talked about having an intervention to urge him to give up alcohol. >> stay with wjz and wjz.com for complete coverage of the george huguely murder trial. wjz's adam may will report live from the charlottesville courtroom, all new at 5:00, as the defense starts to present its case. the man who shot and killed a maryland corrections officer be sentenced to death? lee stevens shot and killed david mcginn. today, both the state and defense are presenting support. a jury will decide if stevens should be sentenced to life or life without parole or death.

>> reporter: he pled guilty to his part in a car scheme. according to our media partner, the baltimore sun, alex moreno says more than 60 city police officers would eventually get in on the scheme. each would receive $300 for every referral. some of the officers indicted have already pled guilty. >> hundreds are still without natural gas service, after crews hit a big gas line in southwest baltimore. monique griego has more on the efforts to get back up and running. >> reporter: families in the area have been without gas service for a day and a half. and although crews are working nonstop to get things repaired, it could be days before service is turned back on. >> sky eye chopper 13 is over a public utility in southwest baltimore. >> berg is also digging in -- bge is also digging in an area southwest. >> the depament of public works says a crew was working

on a water main when a piece of asphalt fell on a 4-inch gasline and broke it. around 900 homes lost service. resident amanda dudley. >> it's terrible. my house is freezing. had to go buy electric heaters. it's terrible. >> reporter: natural gas is highly volatile and the process of repairing lines is delicate. >> damage results. as a result, the gas main has gotten to it. you can't have water in a gas main. >> reporter: about 100 residents have lost water service. but it has since been restored. but before the utility can repair the gas line. >> that's a labor-intensive process. we've got people going door to door throughout this community so that we can get access. >> reporter: so far, they've reached a little less than 600 homes. they're working on finishing the rest and hope to have repairs done today.

but it will still take time. >> once they've completed repairs, we'll go in and reintroduce gas at each and every building. and relay each appliance at each of the buildings. >> reporter: once again, bge is hoping to start turning on services tomorrow. but they have to go building by building so that could take sometime. reporting live from baltimore, wjz eyewitness news. >> once the gas comes back on, crews will need to see if there was water in the appliance line. and if so, the city says it will pay for plumbers to pay for repairs. >> the baltimore grand prix is poised to go again. vic is in the newsroom with the new contract with an indanapolis company. >> the deal ends months of speculation, regarding the future of the event, after the city terminated its contract with debt-ridden baltimore racing development little. -- developments. >> reporter: the deal includes new provisions to help the city

from potential losses. mayor stephanie rawlings-blake unveiled the contract with downed forces today. former constellation energy executives. their company is called baltimore wilkes lane capital. >> i think it's in the best interest for our local economy, the best interest in the city that we move forward. but without any risk to taxpayers. >> reporter: and this new contract must be approved by the city's board of estimates. >> the vote will take place at the next meeting, which is february 22nd. president obama begins a 3- day campaign trip, arriving on latest news from the cbs new york times poll. bill plant reports for wjz. the survey shows he prefers the president over all of his potential republic campaign rivals. >> this goes to an important swing state, where he'll showcase jobs overseas. then a series of fundraisers in california. and then an appearance at

seattle at boeing. the trip finds mr. obama better positioned than he expected at this point. his approval rating in the new cbs news new york times poll is 50%, its highest point since the death of osama bin laden. more good news, smooth sailing on capitol hill, for the president's proposed payroll tax cut, which days ago, had seemed destined for a fight with house republicans. that had the president wearily optimistic. >> you can't take anything for granted here in washington. until my signature is actually on it. >> reporter: even though more americans still disapprove than approve of the president's handling of the economy, his numbers have moved steadily upward from 32% to 34%. and the republican most likely considered to be his opponent in november, now trails in a head-to-head matchup by registered voters. and more importantly, independents now break for the

president over governor romney by 9 points. just one month ago, romney was up 8, a 17-point swing. and scott walker met the president and giving him a milwaukee brewer jersey with president obama's name on it. a mild and sunny afternoon. we may see some rain tomorrow. meteorologist tim williams is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. >> definitely the mild temperatures and a good bit of sunshine out there today. a very comfortable wednesday as we head into the middle of february. 52 degrees in television hill. a we open this up. to give you an idea, the low you see on the screen, is lifting up and over us. it's going to bring potentially rain in for tonight and into tomorrow. the way this plays out tonight, the graphic gives you a bit of an idea. the low is going to move up the great lakes. the snow that it may likely tap into.

the snow will stay north of there. but mainly rain for much of the mid-atlantic. and parts of the east coast. as for in between now and then, 53 degrees now. 40 in oakland. 49 on the shore. and as you mentioned, our mild temperatures continue. how long will they stick around? we'll have that swr coming up-- answer coming up in the forecast. let's check on the roads with kristy breslin. >> hi, mary. hi, everyone. a bit of a slow start out there. a couple of delays to show you on. slowing from frederick road, around to security boulevard. as far as the north side outer loop goes, slow from york to charles street. after that, it does break free. but average speed at this point, 40 miles per hour. delays from 32 past 175. and several accidents to report. in bel air, route 24, right there at route 1. druid park at reisterstown road. west at north avenue, west at mount royal. and halliburton at dundalk there in the dundalk area. let's now take a live look.

a massive fire sweeps through a prison in honduras, killing hundreds of inmates. at least 357 people died in the blaze that began late tuesday night. officials say many of the deceased were trapped inside their cells. honduras has the highest murder rate in the world. and there are frequent clashes. a supreme court justice is robbed at knife point on vacation. justice steven briar was confronted in this vacation home with a machete. it is unclear if he was targeted. but it is raising questions over the lack of security for the justices.

the u.s. marshals protect them only if they travel domestically. a passenger in florida recently used the opportunity to walk away with something very valuable. vanessa medina reports for wjz, surveillance video captured the entire incident. >> reporter: gloria, deregulado is at the top of your screen. blond hair, black pullover. she grabbed her coat. and if you look closely, she leaves sothing very valuable behind. >> she took off her rolex watch and put it in the bin. >> reporter: the guy behind her goes to grab his laptop but is distracted. the gold and silver shimmer is calling attention. what to do? what to do? wait. just grab it. >> i guess something that valuable, someone left it. so i'll just take it. >> reporter: let's see that one more time. his indecision. should i? shouldn't i?

yeah, i should. >> he then goes over to the benches there, where people put on their shoes and get redressed to board their plane. and he takes the rolex, and he put its into a backpack. he again looks around to make sure no one is looking. then he proceeds to walk by two uniformed deputy sheriffs. and when he sees them, he looks down to the ground. so then he happens to look up and looks directly into their surveillance camera. so he had two opportunities to turn this watch in, to do the right thing. but yet he wanted to be the thief and take it with him on his destination. >> deputies have his name and face and are now just waiting to make an arrest. >> investors wait all day. but the market does not bounce back from morning losses. tonight's cbs money watch update. >> reporter: the snack business just got smaller. kellogg's is buying pringle's potato chips from proctor and gamble for $2.7 billion. that's after the deal to sell diamond fell apart. the snack brands include keebler and cheese-its. twitter is admitting it stores contacts and phone number and e- mail addresses for 18 months. when users tap the find friend feature on a smart phone app. the company's current policy does not specifically say twitter downloads and stores your address books. the plan is going to update and say that it stores your contacts. asking the u.s. treasury. pennies and nickels cost more to make than they're actually worth. and green mountain coffee is taking on nestle.

everybody coming in, tim says, it's like spring out there right now. >>t is. >> it's beautiful. >> except it's beautiful in the sky. but when you look at those pictures, all the trees are brown. it's like it doesn't match. something in your brain doesn't register. you're expecting to see all the green. and we're already starting to hear talk about an early allergy season. but we are going to enjoy these

warm temperatures while they last. and we ve another day or so of them before we see any changes. right now, we have 53 degrees, our temperature. relative humidity at 41%. winds from the west/northwest, at 31 miles per hour. barometer is high at 30.24. across the state, look at these temperatures. our average now is 74 degrees. we have temperatures in the 50s. we have 53 in bwi marshall. 40 in oakland, out in the high elevation. 47 in cumberland and hagerstown. 52 in easton and over towards d.c. and down towards the d.c. suburbs. 53 in columbia. 51 in annapolis. and 51 on kent island and rock hall. these winds are coming across the northwest. a bit of a northerly component out of washington county. typically, the northwest winds are going to tap into some very cold air. not the case because everyone in our region is pretty much in the same zone. we are all above average for the most part.

and high pressure is going to ease off. it's going to allow for cloud cover to start moving in ahead of our next weather maker. what we're watching, several different things here. several different dynamics. first off, there is a low- pressure system starting to move across oklahoma now. starting to lift up into indiana and across the great lakes. it's going to drag with it a cold front that is going to start to pull in some moist air out ahead of it. the warmer air stays with it. so we don't drop in temperatures, even though we have in theory a cold front moving through the region over the next few days. we also have a system out in the west right now, down around southern california that is going to be moving in by the end of the weekend. we'll keep you posted on that one. that one could bring us a little wentry mix in time -- wintry mix in time for the holiday. but this is going to move pretty quickly. and high pressure builds in very fast, right behind it. so while the moisture may linger into friday morning, we'll see sunshine here, right after that front moves through here tomorrow and tomorrow night. sunset today at 5:43.

center as his country marked a big step forward with their nuclear program. they inserted the first nuclear fuel rod made into a reactor wednesday. officials say they also have a generation of centerfuges up and running. they're designed to speed up the enriched uranium. >> the 80 to say they are a nuclear power is a game change for them. >> reporter: iran says it is for creating energy and medical research. but many nations, including the u.s., believe iran is working towards a nuclear weapon. >> reporter: the white house says iran's claims are meant to distract from the damages that tough new sanctions are having on the economy. >> reporter: and state department officials insist tehran's announcement is not that impressive. >> we frankly don't see a lot new here. this is not big news. >> reporter: iranian officials signaled they're ready to return to talks with world leaders about their nuclear program. but several countries see this

as a stalling tactic. the u.s. government is also keeping an eye on reports, iran is set to cut off oil exports. it appears to be a response to the european ban, starting in july. at the white house, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, israeli officials are westerning -- warning they could launch a strike on nuclear facilities. israel has also accused iran of being behind attempted attacks in israel around the world. tehran denies the charge. the washington metro area transit agency. kai is live in the newsroom with more on the case that is nearing a close. kai? >> vic, metro is admitting legal responsibility for that 2009 crash. nine people died and dozens were injured, when one train slammed onto another one. now, in terms of the seven settlements have not been disclosed, those settlements in similar cases have been in the millions of dollars.

a lead attorney says the remaining two wrongful death cases are set to go to trial in march. metro shortens the duration of any potential trial. >> investigators later determined the crash was caused bia signal failure -- by a signal failure. congress hopes to send president obama legislation to renew payroll tax cuts by the end of the week. details are being worked out today. lawmakers say the deal will likely extend the 2% point social security tax cuts through the end of the year, for 160 million americans. it may be a sign that the sluggish economy is picking up speed. one of the state's manufacturing plants is adding jobs. wjz is live. wjz reports on the progress that brought the united secretary of labor to baltimore. >> reporter: well, between 1999 and 2009, nearly 6 million jobs were slashed nagged nationwide. -- slashed nationwide, manufacturing jobs. now, those jobs may be coming back. and one factory in baltimore

county is leading the way. >> reporter: this is one of baltimore county's fastest- growing manufacturing plants. workers here build hybrid parts for general motors. recently, sales have picked up. the work has, too. >> please be safe. please. >> reporter: the boost in jobs here has attracted the attention of u.s. labor secretary hilda soliz. she toured the plant today with governor martin o'malley. >> we're seen a lot of factories closing down in this industry. now they're popping up. and to see it happen here in baltimore, maryland, it's a wonderful sight. >> reporter: manufacturing jobs were hard hit long before the recession struck. many companies shipped jobs overseas to china and mexico. and computers and automaker assembly lines took over the workers. but now that president obama is calling for tax cuts, soliz says maryland should see more manufacturing jobs return. >> now is not the time to pull money away from these kinds

kind investments. -- kinds of investments. these are the type of people hurting on the ground. >> reporter: right now, this plant has about 220 workers. but next year, it will expand, bringing on 200 more jobs. and those jobs come directly from mexico. >> that will create a ripple effect through the entire metropolitan economy. >> reporter: and shortly after the tour, soliz said she was encouraged to see the labor unions working with the plant, as they build a bigger factory to bring on more workers. back to you, vic. >> gigi, thank you. manufacturers added 50,000 new jobs to the economy last month. that's the most in a year. a prince george's county teenager is accused of threatening to kill a circuit court judge. police say garrett bailey offered $1,000 for someone to kill dawson on his twitter account. the teen is charged with soliciting murder and threatening a state official. bailey was to be sentenced by

dawson for a break-and-entering charge later this week. the maker for a drug believes counterfeit vials have entered the u.s. what this means for cancer patients. >> reporter: the maker of avastin, the cancer drug, says the fake product does not include a key ingredient. that ingredient is used to treat brain, colon cancer. it is unclear how many vials are now in circulation. the company is working with the fda to track down those counterfeit vials. avastin can only be administered by doctors in hospitals. >> the drug is a huge money maker for roche, generating about $6 billion a year. maryland gets another dose of spring-like weather. take another live look outside right now. the sun has returned, but is it here to stay? wjz has weather and traffic together. bob is here now with the updated numbers. bob? >> let's take a look at radar. nothing going on around here.

supreme today. this prize pekingese won the best of show. he beat out a german shepherd, a dalmatian and a wire-paired dachshund. although he didn't win any prize, his owner will receive top dollar for breeding rights. we have breaking news right now. captain mike perry is live in sky eye chopper 13. what's going on, mike? >> hello, denise, we have a shooting in northwest baltimore. two locations, baltimore police are actually working the actual shooting scene occurred at price and mortimmer, which is two blocks north of northern parkway. apparently an adult male was shot multiple times here and then fled in a vehicle. the vehicle has been stopped by police down at reisterstown road in woodland. the adult male was transported to a local area hospital. no word on his condition. police do have the entire block of reisterstown road and woodland closed in both directions, as they continue their investigation at both of these crime scenes. back to you on tv hill.

investigators in washington are sifting through evidence, looking for clues in the disappearance of susan powell. 10 days ago, her husband, josh powell, killed himself and their two sons in a gas-fueled fire at their home. police say they were getting ready to charge josh in the case of his missing wife. this week, detectives discovered a comforter stained with blood that he left in a storage locker. they us also -- also found an unmarked map that he left. police say a 14-year-old

girl allegedly pulled a hammer and struck a 15-year-old female student. she also allegedly hit a 16- year-old student who came to his friend's aid. the two are now recovering. the 14-year-old has been charged with assault. another appeal. italian prosecutors plan to appeal amanda knox's acquittal. jessica kartalija is in the newsroom with details. >> reporter: knox and her family say they aren't surprised or concerned about that appeal. her attorney says amanda's innocence was already proven, and they're calling this just another example of harassment by italian prosecutor you'll recall, knox was studying abroad when her roommate, meredith kircher, was appealed. she and her boyfriend were convicted before an appeals court overturned that viction. >> the -- that conviction. >> the key is, they have to have enough to overturn that. >> knox could be ordered back

health challenges? >> no. >> or was she on medication? >> no. she had a problem walking. problems with a broken hip. >> reporter: he shared this picture of his mom from decades ago. tonight, she remains in the hospital in critical condition. >> were you ever worried when she would go out driving? >> every time. every day for the last 10 years. >> the three family members are in stable condition tonight. >> a texas child is being called a medical miracle. he is still alive, after being diagnosed with a brain tumor four years ago. connor lint is now an active 8- year-old. but in 2007, that was thought to be impossible. he was given less than a year to live because the tumor was inoperable. his parents opted for oral chemotherapy and plenty of prayer. the tumor shrunk to the size of a pea. and connor is doing well and is even cleared to do sports in school. british researchers say they have found a way to reduce

hot flashes in patients in chemotherapy. they are introducing talk therapy as a way to reduce symptoms. >> reporter: susie winburg credits talk therapy for easing her hot flashes and night sweats. >> it was just interesting to see how -- just talking about our experiences and what we were going through, was just incredibly helpful. >> reporter: she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. chemotherapy treatment brought on early menopause and the hot flashes that come with it. >> it was that very much instantaneous and intense heat that seem to come from nowhere. >> reporter: susie didn't want to turn to hormone treatment. so she signed up for a talk therapy session. >> researchers recruited about 100 breast cancer patients from london to take part in the experiment. >> half of the women received therapy care. the other half.

a trained therapist changed their behavior and used relaxation techniques. >> we found that calm breathing and calming thoughts together. it has helped to diminish the impact of hot flashes. >> reporter: women who had the therapy saw their symptoms cut in half after six months. >> reporter: susie still gets hot flashes but says they're not as severe. thanks to life changes she made through therapy. >> changing my caffeine intake. sugar intake. dare i say sometimes alcohol intake. >> reporter: and researchers say it's not just for breast cancer patients. any woman suffering through menopause could benefit from talking it out. in london, tina kraus, wjz eyewitness news. >> researchers in britain say they are working to train health professionals wolgd wide in -- worldwide in talk therapy so more women can get the treatment. new laws cracking down on

aiming at telemarketers. it includes written consent before placing a robocall. this closes a loophole in the law. telemarketers also have to provide an automated way for consumers to revoke their consent. randy travis was arrested earlier this month for public intoxication. on the dash cam video, the country music video legend is heard asking several times if the officers were kidding. travis has since apologized for his actions. this gentleman was renovating an old home when a worker noticed something in the walls. that something turned out to be hundreds of gold coins dating back to the 1970s. they are valued at nearly $1 million. that will pay for a lot of dry wall and paint. well, it's lovely today. but you'll need your umbrella for tomorrow. >> bob has the updated first warning weather forecast next. ,

but it's beginning to calm down. tomorrow, the wins probably go back again to the ocean component. that will bring in ocean moisture. it's not really well organized. but it is moving across the midwest. it will be here tomorrow. look for rain and drizzle. temperatures probably stay in the mid- to upper 40s tomorrow, with the cloud cover. to our north, maybe a little snow to the great lakes. to the south, thunderstorm activity, could be severe weather west of the mississippi. lot of moisture coming in. for our region, it will be moving in our direction, as a batch of rain, drizzle. already see some clouds just to our west. late tonight, the cloud comes in tomorrow. occasional rain and drizzle. and once this passes through the region, there's another batch of mild air behind it, at least temporarily. for friday, temperatures again in the 50s. start the weekend. but there is another fly in the ointment. way down across the gulf of mexico, we expect maybe a low pressure to develop. it could pass to our south and bring us nothing.

that's about the most likely scenario. but there's a slight chance if that storm gets a little closer to our region, may just be cold enough on sunday afternoon, for a little rain-snow mixture, it's possible. but only now, a 20% chance of that happening. so even though we showed that in our five-day forecast, the chances for that precip on sunday are not very positive at this point. well, some people really would like to see some snow here. doesn't look like it will be much of anything, even if we get it. southeast winds, 10 to 15 knots. on the bay, small craft advisory. lifted at 6:00 tonight. suise, check that out. sets at 5:43. bay temp heading up to 42. tonight, we'll see increasing clouds. 32 by morning. the average low, 27. tomorrow, occasional mild rain and drizzle in the region. mid- to upper 40s tomorrow. and then sunshine, back low to mid-50s again on friday. >> okay. >> wonderful. thank you, bob. still to come on eyewitness news tonight.
