dead. adam may just stepped out of the courtroom, with the latest in the trial. adam? >> reporter: well, kai, some tension inside the room today. uncomfortable moments when the uva lacrosse players took the stand, many of them had been friends with george huguely for years and had not seen him for two years since the night love died. most of them avoided eye contact with huguely, except for one. >> reporter: one by one, these former teammates from the university of virginia's 2010 lacrosse team took the stand to testify against their old friend george huguely. they told jurors, the chevy chase native was drunk, spilling wine and even urinating in public in the hours before his ex-girlfriend, cockeysville native, yeardley love, was found dead, weeks before graduation. kenneth klauson gave huguely a cold stare in court, before testifying yeardley love was one of his best friends. klauson said huguely seemed strange and had a change of demeanor after visiting love's

apartment. klauson said, i asked him, what's wrong? huguely replied nothing is wrong. klauson, i asked two more times and i got no response. the lacrosse players also told jurors they caught huguely lying about his whereabouts that night. later, they saw huguely still physically drunk, strip down to his boxers before disappearing for the night. >> you would say this is a strong finish? >> i would say very strong witness. >> of course, they are aware the defense is going to say, he was so drunk he didn't know what he was doing. but the fact that he was aware enough to lie to his roommates that's something the commonwealth is degree to hammer-- going to hammer home in his arguments. >> reporter: they received calls and text messages from huguely that night. the flirtacious notes were not read aloud that night. but imply that huguely was looking for a hookup that night

as love lie dying from a blunt force trauma to her brain. >> they started with a medical expert. this expert testified that yeardley love was so intoxicated the night of her death that she would could have had some balance problems. this ends the defense theory that this death was accidental. if jurors believe that, if they believe there is a shadow of doubt and it would have been -- could have been an accident, they could find huguely guilty of manslaughter instead of first-degree murder. that is a big difference in sentences. first-degree murder is life in prison. manslaughter could be 10 years or less. reporting live from charlottesville, virginia, adam may, wjz eyewitness news. >> the defense will continue calling witnesses tomorrow. and you can stay with wjz for the remainder of the huguely trial. we will be in the courtroom all week and have the latest on air and online at wjz.com. we're updating the breaking news in northeast baltimore. sky eye chopper 13 is over the

scene. >> reporter: actually, mary, we're in northwest baltimore. this is reisterstown road and woodland avenue, where an adult male was found shot multiple times. his vehicle apparently fled the scene of the original shooting. we're going to roll some tape and show you that that occurred up at price and mortimmer, which is about 6 to 8 blocks north of this location. this is off of reisterstown road north of northern parkway. now, police are investigating several bullet casings in the roadway at price and mortimmer. apparently the victim then fled from the scene. and his vehicle was stopped down on reisterstown road and woodland avenue, where he was rendered assistance and transported to a local area hospital. no word on his condition. but baltimore police have closed both northbound and southbound reisterstown road. about a block of either side of woodland avenue. back to you on tv hill. >> all right, captain mike, reporting live in die eye chopper 13. -- sky eye chopper 13. the man accused, is getting

ready for his role in the election day robocalls. denise is in the newsroom with more. >> reporter: paul schurick will learn his fate tomorrow for charges in the robocall and other scandals. he faces the possibility of up to 12 years in prison, after a injury jury found him guilty of making those phone calls. suric submitted letters before the judge. they hope to have him not serve any time in jail. they also hope to have a new trial. >> the state prosecutor's office declined to say what punishment they will be requesting. after weeks of an uncertain future, baltimore will host another grand grand prix. today, the city unveils a new contract. wjz is live. mike hellgren has details on the new partnership and what it means to the city. hi, mike. >> hi, kai. the new leadership includes a man with years of experiences,

ruing these races across the country. and two former constellation companies. and though it appears this is on track for passage, it is far from a done deal yet. >> reporter: after financial and organizational bumps in the road, baltimore's grand prix is on its way back. and the new managers behind it, a group called downforc racing, tell wjz, they've learned from the mistakes of baltimore race development, which ran last year. brd still owes millions to vendors and taxpayers. >> what we saw last year was basically finding the diamond in the rough. we have a real opportunity to polish that diamond up and really make baltimore shine next year. >> reporter: among the protections in the proposed new contract with baltimore, the city can work closely to inspect the group's finances. down force will pay fewer fees to the city, making it more financially viable to them. and part of the cost of each

ticket would go directly to an account supervised by baltimore. taxpayers get their cut up front. >> it was very important for us to put safeguards in place to protect the taxpayer. >> reporter: it will likely all come down to a vote by the city's board of estimates next wednesday. >> reporter: the deal could change by then, based on public input. >> we are prepared to withstand the financial bumps in the road that are almost certain to happen in ways that we can't necessarily foresee. >> reporter: the contract would run through 2016. the new investors say they're in for the long haul. >> we haven't succeeded until it's standing on its own two feet. >> reporter: so what happens to all of the old money that the old managers, baltimore racing development, owe the city and owe vendors? well, we talked to the mayor about that. and she'll weigh in, coming up new at 6:00. reporting live downtown, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> the new group still plans to host the race labor day weekend and thinks the track will be

about the same. it is another day without heat or hot water for many people living in southwest baltimore, after construction crews hit a natural gas main in the area. wjz is live at the scene. monique griego has more on the repair efforts and the frustrations tonight. >> reporter: the good news tonight is that the gas line itself has already been fixed. that's what crews behind me just finished working on. but despite all of that progress, it could still be a couple of days before service is restored. >> reporter: after a day and a half of digging and repairing lines, hundreds of people in this southwest baltimore neighborhood are still... without any gas service in their home. >> real rough. you know? the water, you know, got kids in the house. different rooms. >> they haven't had heat or hot water since early yesterday morning. >> reporter: sky eye chopper 13 captured the scene as bge crews

scrambled to repair a broken gasline in the 300 block of millington. the utility says the line was accidentally busted by a public works crew, trying to fix a water main break. 900 lost gas service. >> when i come in from work at night, i hope it will be fixed and i can take a shower tonight. >> reporter: but according to berg, -- bge, a hot shower tonight isn't likely because this is a labor-intensive process that requires crews to go door to door to shutaf thoff. >> we can flush the system of the water and debris from our gas mains. then we'll have to go back in and begin to reestablish gas service and relight appliances. >> reporter: crews hope to start restoring service tomorrow but admits there is no guaranteed time line. >> safe to say it will continue to be a multiday restoration process. >> reporter: homeowners here say they're just happy to see any more progress. >> i'm just happy to see the old getting filled back in. that's a blessing right now. >> reporter: and many families

tell us they'll be staying with relatives until the gas is turn said back on. the city has also set up a heating shelter for people who don't have any other place to go. reporting live in southwest baltimore, monique griego. wjz eyewitness news. >> and this is really important. if crews find water damage in a home's appliance line, the city says it will pay for plumbers to make repairs so customers don't have to pay out of pocket. our stretch of warm winter weather continues. lots of sunshine today. but we're tracking the trance -- chance for showers starting overnight. meteorologist bernadette woods and bob turk have a look at our temperatures and live doppler radar. >> right now, nothing going on around here. beautiful afternoon once again. take a look at radar. very, very quiet. but we go out to the midwest. there is a batch of rain out there. not too heavy. we'll see some rain and drizzle during the day tomorrow. but it's still going to stay on the mild side. take a look at temperatures around the state. we're still in the low to mid- 50s, most places. there you go. 52 here. 41 in oakland. that's the cool spot.

52 in washington. 50 down to the south and southeast. tomorrow, yes, we'll see mainly rain. it will be light. that rain passing to our north. a little snow in the adirondacks. northern in portions of maybe pennsylvania and much of ontario. but for us, just rain and drizzle. yes. we've had a very mild drizzle. bernadette, once again a look at the temps. >> very interesting. take a look at this. we're taking you back to december 1st. since that date, we have had 36 days with highs in the 30s and 40s, none in the 20s. we've had more days, though, during this same stretch, with highs in the 50s or even higher than that. 41 days. and one of those days, we even topped out at 70 degrees. this is a very warm winter. >> we're going to go to sky iep chopper 13. we have breaking news now. let's go to captain mike with more. captain mike? >> we have a civil disobedience situation going on in northeast baltimore.

this is bel air road and erdmann avenue, where dozens and dozens of youth have been basically fighting and running police sort of around in circles in the neighborhood. now, several of those juveniles have just been arrested down along chester field avenue, mayfield avenue. and one just right here at bel air road and erdmann avenue. we've seen as many as 50 juveniles running out into the middle of the street, stopping cars. police, there's at least 15 or 20 police vehicles right here along bel air road and erdmann avenue, trying to maintain order. it's not clear exactly what these juveniles are doing. but police are arresting them as they can catch them. there's been several foot pursuits. we know of no injuries at this time. several arrests we believe at this time are for fighting or disorderly conduct. but there's at least 30 or 40 juveniles standing at the bus

stops or corners here, and dashing out into traffic for no apparent reason. police are still trying to gain control of of the situation. we'll continue to keep you monitored. >> thank you, captain mike perry, reporting live. this saturday, baltimore's own archbishop edwin o'brien will be elevated to cardinal. and all this week, direct from rome, the catholic review is sharing its coverage with wjz. archbishop o'brien opens up its thoughts as he prepares for this most holy honor. [ singing ] >> reporter: the ceremony is one of the most important ever at the vatican. archbishop edwin o'brien is now in rome, where he is days away from becoming a cardinal. o'brien, along with 21 others, will kneel before the pope on saturday, who will place the traditional red, four-cornered silk hat on their head friday.

it is a significant moment for baltimore catholics who 18 years ago, watched the elevation of cardinal keeler in 1984. baltimore has only witnessed the making of a cardinal two other times. in 1965, and in 1886. a contingent from baltimore arrived in rome today, and celebrated mass with cardinal designate o'brien. the catholic review spoke with the ash bish -- archbishop of rome. he became emotional, think being what it would mean for catholics at home. >> i would not be here if it were not for them. and just want to make sure that they are very, very much part of the ceremony. and the gathering, it's not just the select few. it's going to be all the faithful of the archdiocese. and they deserve the honor as much as i do. >> if you would like to hear

investigators take new steps to figure out how whitney houston died. today, they have orders for subpoenas and -- subpoenas for the medical and pharmacy records. >> reporter: a fence outside the new hope baptist church in newark, has turned into a giant shrine to whitney houston. >> right now, it hurts me because you know, she's a great person. she is also a great singer. and nobody can be like her. >> we know we won't be able to be here on saturday. but we want to make this a tribute to her today. >> reporter: houston's family has chosen to keep saturday's funeral services private. long-time family friend and gospel singer marvin winans will deliver the eulogy at the church where houston sang as a child. >> she wore fame and she was wonderful in it. but she was always that little girl from new jersey.

>> reporter: pastor winans says he plans to celebrate houston's life. a number of celebrities, including houston's godmother, aretha franklin, are expected to attend the service. >> reporter: the 48-year-old was found dead in a hotel saturday. the los angeles coroner's office has issued a subpoena for medical and pharmacy records. some prescription medications were found in her hotel room. houston's only child, daughter bobbie christina, is said to be doing much better after being hospitalized sunday. her father, bobby brown, said she would prefer to deal with her mother's death outside of the public eye. >> i just say, given it to god. only god can see you through this. >> reporter: fans are still hoping for a public memorial sometime down the road. in newark, new jersey, randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. and houston did not have -- does not have a star on the hollywood walk of game.

cars helping people.org, and donate a car now. back to you. >> thank you, kristy. >> from wars to disasters. the navy hospital ship comfort always found its way home to baltimore. but not so much longer. alex demetrick reports, the navy is moving the comfort out of baltimore permanently. >> reporter: the navy hospital ship comfort has made baltimore its home port for the past quarter century. but this will be the last year here. >> i'm sad. i'm unhappy. i was crying last night. >> reporter: former congresswoman helen bentley played a big part in getting the comfort to baltimore. >> we love it, treat today nice. everybody likes it, loves it. and we hope we can still keep it. >> reporter: but bentley knows it's not likely to happen. the navy says moving it to norfolk will save $2 million a year, even though it just spent $5 million three years ago to upgrade the baltimore dock. >> i guess they're abandoning that investment. >> reporter: during its time in baltimore, the comfort was

another beautiful afternoon across much of the region. just mild temperatures. with this mild winter continuing. looks like tomorrow will be a little damp. but still mild. take a look at temperatures right now, with generally clear skies. a few high clouds way out to the west. 41, oakland. 48 in cumberland. we're still at 52 degrees. dew point is pretty low. still pretty dry air. 52 in washington. locally, temperatures right around the 50-degree mark. once again, another mild february day. and more than halfway through the month, we not only had two cold days in a month. 54, 36 today. the average is 45. and the average low just came up yesterday to 27 now. keeps coming up. 77, the record high. warm one, 1949. 1943, 6 degrees above zero. right now, we have a west wind at around 9 miles an hour. generally, between 10 to 15 most of the day. and we even have some small

craft advisory on the bay. that will be at 6:00. moisture around the gulf of mexico. feeding into the missouri. shower activity breaking out. going to see mississippi, louisiana and east texas. some could see locally severe for those folks. this batch of rain moving in our general direction. also, the main low, going to pretty mitch pass -- much pass to the west. it will bring with it clouds and rain. temperatures still in the mid- to upper 40s. then after that passes through the region, sunshine, mild templess return for friday and saturday as well. forecast then on the bay. southeast winds around 10 to 15. that will bring enough moisture off the bay and the ocean. 42 is your bay temp. tonight, then, late-night clouds coming in. 32 by morning. tomorrow, cloudy with occasional rain and drizzle. probably about a quarter inch before it's all said and done. tomorrow's high again, 48, which is again above average there are if time of year.

just after 5:30 right now. 52 degree asks clear. good evening, thank you for staying with wjz eyewitness news. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. let's update the breaking news from northwest baltimore. sky eye chopper 13 is over a large fight on bel air road. let's go to captain mike perry with details. mike, i know this is somewhat of an evolving situation. have you learned any more? >> i've learned a little bit, kai. apparently the police helicopter was out here around 4:00 this afternoon. this looks like it's mostly girls, teenage girls. there are some males sprinkled in between. this looks like it started out to be some type of a fight between possibly two different schools or two different groups of teenagers. and has evolved into a very large incident where several people have been arrested.

teenagers, mostly. well, what we is have seen since we were on the scene. police, several of them have been caught fighting. so they have been arrested for that. several have assaulted police and been arrested for that. and then we do have currently a large police presence in front of the cvs pharmacy here. this is on bel air road, right in front of ergman avenue, where there is about 20 or 30 teenagers right along the sidewalk here. police sort-them in a group at the moment. and there's another whole hundred or so that are wandering up and down bel air road, between herring run park and this scene. police have called for more police units to come to the area. they are arresting those who are disorderly ore not falling police orders. right now, they have started to moderate a little. still some police activity on erdmann.

a man convicted of murder -- murdering a northeast baltimore officer has been arrested. new rules from maryland's highest court means it is more difficult to sentence someone to death. but inmates, and the killer of a prison guard, lee stevens, believes he meet those criteria. >> reporter: a jury will decide if two-time murderer lee stevens should be allowed to continue to live. nearly six years ago, he stabbed to death, correctional officer david mcgwynn. since then, they changed the rules in death penalty cases. now, besides all of the evidence needed to convict, prosecutors need to clear two more hurdles. is the murderer over 18? is it proven he committed the murder? and is there a dna link to the murder? steves was imprisoned because he killed a man in an eastern shore nightclub in 1997.

now guilty of killing corporal mcgwynn. the jury is left with three options, death, life without parole, or life in pris prison. >> reporter: the victim's impact statement came from mcgwynn's sister. she's the one that got the call telling her her brother had died. she said that was gut wrenching. but living with it, she said it's like the nightmare from which she cann wake up. >> the court will take the rest of the week, present being three to five mitigating cases. >> back to you on tv hill. the prosecutor's office now believes the jury will decide steven's fate, being on tuesday. a man who attended a baltimore county high school, may soon be facing a war crimes charges. vic is in the newsroom with more on this case. vic? >> the 31-year-old majid kahn was a graduate of the high school. he was arrested by cia. he is charged with plotting to kill this man, formerpakistani president pervez musharraf.

musharraf never showed up there. prosecutors also alleged kahn was an al qaeda operative, who plotted to blow up an underground gas storage tank in the united states. >> kahn has been detained at gaunt gaunt since 2006. iran is marking what it seems two major advances in a controversial nuclear program. that view is contradicted by u.s. officials who say the sanctions are working. >> reporter: state tv showed iranian president mahmoud ahmadinejad, front and center, as his country scientists marked a big step forward with a nuclear program. they inserted the first nuclear fuel rod in iran, into a reactor wednesday. and officials say they also have a new generation of centerfuges up and running. they're designed to speed up

production of inriched uranium. >> this is an opportunity for iran to demonstrate that it continues continues to march toward a nuclear weapons program. >> reporter: but iran maintains it is for medical research, and energy, not nuclear weapons. >> reporter: it is hard to steer away from the sanctions. >> officials insist tehran's announcement is not that impressive. >> we frankly don't see a lot new here. this is not big news. >> reporter: iranian officials signaled they ready to return to talks with world leaders about their program. but several countries see this as a stalling tactic. the u.s. government is also keeping an eye on iran's oil. the country is reportedly taking steps to cut off oil exports to some european countries before the european union's ban on oil takes efct in july.

danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> israeli officials are warning, they could launch a military strike. israel accuses iran of being behind attempted attacks. a horrible scene in honduras, where a fire inside a prison kills over 350 people. the fire spread so quickly. as firefighters tried to open the cells. police say an inmate phoned a local governor to say he was going to set the prison on fire. it is one of the world's deadliest prison fires in over a century. nearly 500 people, though, did get out. >> trouble for the european economy. experts say the debt crisis is having a far-reaching effect. the seven countries are moving closer to recession. official figures show their economy has contracted nearly half a percent during the final quarter of last year. this is the first decline since 2009. president obama begins a three-day campaign trip with some good news from the latest cbs news new york times poll.

the survey shows voters prefer the president over all of his potential republican rivals. bill plante reports for wjz, with a look at what is ahead for the president. >> reporter: this campaign trip will take the president first to wisconsin, an important swing state, where he'll showcase jobs returning to the u.s. from overseas. then a series of fundraisers in california. and an appearance for seattle at boeing, which has just announced a $22 billion airplane order. the trip finds mr. obama better positioned than expected at this point. his approval rating in the cbs news new york times poll is 50%. its highest point since the death of osama bin laden. more good news, smooth sailing on capitol hill for the president's proposed payroll tax cut, which just days ago, had seemed destined for a fight th house republicans. >> you can't take anything for granted. you're in washington. until my signature is actually

on it. >> reporter: even though more americans still disapprove than approve of the president's handling of the economy, his numbers have moved steadily upwards since november, from 34% approval to 44%. and the republican considered most likely to be his opponent in november, now trails in a head-to-head matchup, by 6 percentage points in november. and even more important, independents who will be crucial to victory in november, now break for the president, over governor romney by 9 points. just one month ago, romney was up 8, a 17-point swing. and one of tonight's fundraisers in los angeles will feature a performance by the rock band, the foo fighters. 1,000 are expected to attend. time now for a look at the baltimore sun. more reaction to the news that the usns comfort is leaving its baltimore home. a look at the gluten-free fat. and whether it makes a defense for your health. and a look the lacrosse

season. it's a tough job. being a cop can be both rewarding and filled with anxiety. these days, the baltimore city police department is under the microscope for controlling crime and its policies. now, there's a push by the brass to get the highest- caliber officers from the force. eyewitness news was invited to experience the process. >> hands down. hands, hands! let me see your hands. >> reporter: it's a gut- wrenching experience. and as closing as a civilian like me can get in a top shoot. it is called the explosives firearms simulator. >> this is a true tool. we push that. >> reporter: at this gun range, nestled in the woods in northeast baltimore county, police and i can fire a simulated gun and make similar mistakes. on the streets, cops don't have that luxury. >> down. >> you may have to do that. but you should have done everything within your power to

avoid that. and we really tried to push that. >> reporter: baltimore police say despite all of their training, their job still remains dangerous. they point to the recent incident where here at north roads and monument street, they were arresting one man. and all of a sudden, we're blindsided. physically attacked by two men. two cop his to wrestle that guy to the ground and arrest him. >> the force is about 3,000 officers strong. yet there are openings. and city police are aggressively trying to recruit new officers. >> you're in the direction -- veer in the direction the car is sliding. >> okay. >> reporter: officers and recruits around the state -- >> yes. yes. >> use this driving course to learn safe and tactical driving skills. >> stay on it. >> we are trying to teach them to be proactive about driving. we're trying to teach them to be safe. >> reporter: whether on a car or foot patrol in the district. officers have to be in good

it is not every day that someone turns 106 years old. but that is what is happening in edgewood, harford county. ron matz has more on the woman and her big celebration. >> happy birthday to you ♪ >> reporter: levitius smith is celebrating her birthday. not just any birthday. she's 106 years young. so what's her secret? >> i go to church. i love church. >> that's where she met the mayor. she's been honored by the state

orioles will gather for the start of spring training weekend but before they even get there, problems for one of their young pitchers. sports director mark viviano join us with the latest. >> sports director briton plans to throw for friday. but his pregame routine will be explosly monitored because of inflammation in his shoulder. an mri shows no structural damage. briton says he is not alarmed. both expect to compete for a spot in the starting rotation as the training unfolds. he is an important part of the pitching staff. i talked to gm dan duquette. >> i'm looking forward to spring training because we're going to get an opportunity to see what we have.
