saturday. officers placed barricades around the new hope baptist church, where the pop superstar sang in the choir as a girl. police will close off a six- block area around the church. fans say they understand why they have to stay back. >> i'm actually kind of glad that they did it private. i wouldn't want to see a circus affair. because they are so spiritual. >> reporter: fans will be able to watch the service live on television and the internet. about 1500 invited guests will be able to attend the service. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: kevin costner, who costarred with houston in the hit film "the bodyguard," will speak at the service, as will her mentor, music clive davis. stevie wonder is expected to sing at the service. so is houston's godmother, aretha franklin. >> reporter: after the funeral, houston's body is expected to be laid to rest here in new

was found beaten in her off- campus apartment. the prosecution has presented its case to the jury. and the defense just started late yesterday. huguely, of chevy chase, is pleading not guilty of charges of first-degree murder. >> the trial is expected to resume tomorrow. stay with wjz and wjz.com for complete coverage of the george huguely trial. we'll bring you all of the development from the charlottesville, virginia courtroom. he was facing 12 years in prison. today, a baltimore judge goes easy on paul schurick. derek valcourt has more on the sentence given to the man behind those 2010 location robocalls -- election robocalls. >> reporter: paul schurick will spend one month in home detention. that is a sentence the judge handed down this morning for the man who ran the bob ehrlich 2010 campaign for governor. authorizing those now notorious election-night robocalls. suggesting there was no need to

go vote because governor o'malley had already won, even though the polls were not even closed yet. in court, schurick addressed the judge, telling him i'm disappointed in myself. it was a consultant's recommendation, but my decision. he called it a profound personal failure, saying it ended my career and put my family through hell. i'm here to apologize. i asked him if he had any regrets about authorizing that robocall. >> regret? yeah. i just walked out of a courtroom. you're damn right i have some regret. it was a mistake. it was the wrong decision am we live with consequences. >> reporter: the judge told suric he would also have to do 500 hours of community service. and he would have to split that service in the two communities that were impacted by these robocalls, 250 hours of community service in baltimore city, 250 in prince george's county. at the mitchell courthouse other derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> and new at 5:00, schurick

talks about his decision to approve the robocall and how it could affect future campaigns. new details on the spill overnight north of the tunnels that shut down the roadway for hours. vic is in the newsroom with the criminal charges. >> police say the man is charged with driving under the influence. the road is reopened today, just before 9:00 last night. a tractor-trailer going south crashed just north of the fort mchenry toll plaza. the truck was carrying large containers of concrete solution. a hazmat team worked through the night, cleaning up the spill. no one washurst in -- was hurt in that accident. >> reporter: wjz speaks with speaks with transportation police about the crash. it is a wet afternoon across much of maryland. light rain is falling and still, though, rather mild. wjz has weather and traffic together. we'll talk to kristy in just a

second. but here's meteorologist tim williams who is tracking live doppler radar for us. >> definitely a damp afternoon. but temperatures have not really taken much of a hit. we are still in the mid-40s. no drastic change in the temperatures. although by nature, a cold front typically cools us down pretty much. but it did not do so in this case. we have rain still trying to push across the region. and the tail end of it, up near westminster. up and down say the 140 corridor. frederick to hancock, we're seeing more of a drying pattern there. down towards annapolis, we have a few heavy showers. and we'll say to the east of cambridge. and, well, right around the mid- atlantic area. the entire region is dealing with these showers. but they're going to move through here very quickly. and in the next few hours, they'll be done. dryer air, with high pressure sunshine building back into the regions and your workweek. and we'll talk about the weekend ahead, which could be a little tricky, coming up in just a few moments.

kai? >> thank you. let's check on the roads with kristy breslin. the rain never makes it easy for us. a busy rush hour to start out. if you're traveling on that west side inner loop, you can expect delays there to 95. over on the top side outer loop, just bumper to bumper there from harford road to green spring avenue. back to the west side, heavy from liberty road to baltimore national pike. and 70 having problems in both directions. eastbound heavy to the beltway. and westbound, bumper to bumper from 29 to marriottsville road. as far as 95 goes, a slight delay there in the northbound direction from the 895 split to the beltway. several accidents out there, dorsey run at bender rain -- lane. and also wilkens avenue at hurley avenue. and bel air road at white avenue. let's take a live look. as you can see, things are moving along there. that is a look at the beltway at bel air road. this traffic report is brought to you by pizza bolis.

the formula you're feeding your baby may have arsenic in it. that's according to researchers at dartmouth university. they looked at food that used organic brown rice syrup as a sweetener, and they found some contained arsenic levels six times the legal limit the government allowed in drinking water. right now, there are no federal

laws restricting how much arsenic can be in food. a bus collides with a dump truck in new jersey, killing one girl and injuring at least three others. a dump truck ended upright. three students are in critical condition. the child who died is reportedly the daughter of a state police trooper. police are investigating what caused the crash. an unusual scene on i-95 near laurel in prince george's county. hundreds of dead birds on the roadway, bringing traffic to a crawl. we spoke to the department of natural resources to find out what happened. >> reporter: a strange sight on i-95 northbound, in laurel, prince george's county. those spots you see are hundreds of dead birds, scattered on the roads. >> i travel this all the time. never seen anything like that before. >> reporter: the maryland department of natural resources says the birds are starlings. it appear they ran into traffic, and seems unusual,

authorities say starlings in traffic in this area is not unusual. >> something like this, it doesn't happen too often. >> reporter: at this time, the department of natural resources believes the starlings may have ran into a truck. and as small and delicate as they are, that kind of impact would be enough to kill them. >> reporter: they had to use shovels to remove the birds from the road. it appears the birds died from blunt force trauma. >> if one runs into it, unfortunately, the rest usually follow. and with the large trailers, it would account for the mass mortality. >> reporter: to be sure the birds weren't poisoned, samples are being taken and analyzed. >> wall street analysts have to like the performance of the markets today. tonight's cbs money watch update. don't expect relief at the gas pump any time soon. the national average for a gallon of regular is now $3.50. it's the first time gas has hit that level so early in the year. crude oil prices are hovering around $100 a barrel and uncertainty in iran could drive prices even higher, as we head into the spring driving season. new applications for unemployment benefits dropped this week to a four-year low. claims fell to 248,000. it's yet another sign the job market is slowly recovering. general motors is reporting its biggest-ever annual profit for 2011. but analysts question whether it can keep that momentum going. strong sales helped turn the profit of $7.6 billion for all of last year. but gm lost ground when profits missed expectations. europe and south america reported losses. and sales growth here in the u.s. slowed, even as more

of their joints? what are you seeing? >> as modern medicine has kept us healthier, our joints are still failing as we get older. so we lose the cartilage in the joint. we have pain, deformed joints. slows us down. >> reporter: what about joint replacement? >> i think joint replacement is one of the things we can do. it's been wonderful how we have been able to help patients get back to their functional lives. but there's so many things to do before joint replacement, in terms of maintaining your body weight, keeping yourself fit, keeping yourself flexible. i always tell folks, arthritis is going to come. the joints are going to wear out. but stay moving, stay flexible. but that will do a lot to keep you functional. >> reporter: to be honest, the phones are ringing off the hook. what are people asking? >> folks are asking a lot about how they age, what they can do to prevent it. do they really have to have so many joint replacement. >> we want them to last longer,

home for a lot of people. taking it slowly. >> yeah. it is such a gray day. but we haven't complained too much about these gray days. they've come with mild temperatures. and as i keep saying, you don't shovel gray and wet off of your car. >> that's right. >> now, that may change going into the weekend. we have a system that we are watching. but it is still three days away. we are not pushing the panic button just yet. but we will keep you abreast of that. i'll show you that in a moment here. we had pretty strong storms roll across, with heavy rain. not really storms per se. but very heavy showers roll across the beltway. you see the brighter colors there. and that's an indication of some of the heavier bands. you can just kind of look at that, along with our key there. those heavier bands roll right across 695, just over the last half hour or so. and now we're starting to see the tail end of rain. moisture is going to be around. so we'll have a very gradual clearing tonight. still clouds around as we move into this thursday night and

friday morning. right now, the temperature is at 45 degrees. 43, the dew point. relative humidity at 92%. the air is still pretty saturated right now. calm winds around most of the area. that's reported at bwi marshall. 30.11. 41 in cumberland, one of the cooler spots on the map. 46 in ocean city. and 48 in patuxent river. around the immediate metro area, everyone is in the mid- 40s. 47 in annapolis and kent island. calm readings around much of central maryland. we've had a bit of a south flow. and we haven't had a lot of sun there. but that southerly flow is keeping the moisture in play and keeping the warm temperatures in play. now, we have several different things we're watching here. first off, this is the disturbance moving through right now. now, i'll show you two different features here. the northern portion of the jet stream, responsible for this storm system, moving into the pacific northwest. southern tip is moving along california and along the gulf.

these two features are going to be responsible for whatever we get sunday into sunday night. now, they're going to move into the region. this system moves out of here. we'll start to see clearing by tonight and into tomorrow. high pressure will be in control. we'll get into the 50s by tomorrow and into saturday. so no matter what comes along, the ground will be warm and the air will be moving along. and it's only going to be one day that we'll have these potential problems. it will depend how close that southerly jet moves to the coastline. that will determine whether we get rain, snow or mixture. we'll keep you posted as we get closer. small craft advisory in effect through tomorrow. we're looking at temperatures tonight, right around 36 degrees. a little rain early, then mostly cloudy tonight. then for tomorrow, 54. breezy. that will dry us out. some clouds and sunshine heading into the weekend. >> looks good. thanks, tim. don't miss tonight's cbs primetime lineup.

punishment because the bomb did not blow up the plane and no passengers were hurt or killed. >> reporter: but attorneys for the u.s. government argued abdulmutallab attempted to kill 289 people. and if released, he's likely to try another suicide mission. >> reporter: when he pled guilty last october, abdulmutallab said his explosive-laden underwear was a, quote, blessed weapon to avenge muslims around the world. he admitted an war almalacky inspired him. abdulmutallab is expected to serve his sentence at the federal super max prison in colorado, where other convicted terrorists are behind bars. at the white house, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> abdul mutalab's family was in detroit for the sentencing but they did not attend the hearing itself. one of six men accused of

murdering three college friends. >> reporter: the jury also found jose caransa guilty of robbing the three students, including the fourth who was the lone survivor of that attack. this happened back in 2007, at a new jersey school yard. all of the accused are members of the ms13 gang. one of the suspects was arrested here in maryland. caransa is also accused of splashing a girl's neck, then sexually assaulting her. two were sentenced to life in prison. another took a 30-year deal. amanda knox is ready to tell her story to the world. she made international headlines and has reached an agreement with harper collins to pen a memoir. the 23-year-old seattle resident, in prison for four

years. a controversy is brewing over the burial of josh powell. the washington man blew up himself and his sons in a home fire explosion. as kevin mccarty reports, police and his missing wife's family don't want him buried near his boys. >> when they wanted to bury him near his boys, uproar started. the family filed complaint and requested for a temporary restraining order. >> the family views this as simply the murderer being buried next to the victims. >> reporter: crimestoppers of tacoma and pierce counties stepped forward to buy grave sites to keep josh powell from being buried nearby. >> the plan here is not for us to buy grave sites. it's to stop josh powell from being buried there. >> the city stopped all move

toward josh powell's interment there, once a complaint was filed but may be able to do little legally, without a court order. >> we don't have any rules or codes that prevent us from selling to a certain individual or group of people. >> reporter: josh powell killed himself and his sons in an explosion. >> if they want one of those plots for susan, it's theirs. >> reporter: steve powell, josh's father, remains behind bars on child pornography charges. authorities want to know if he has any information about susan. a suspected case of tuberculosis is discovered on the umbc campus. they confirm a member of the university could be with tuberculosis. university health services is working with the department of health to further test that

individual. the birth control debate heats back up as religious leaders testify in the capital. they say the obama administration was violating religious freedom by requiring contraceptive cover. the president has since modified the policy so that the insurance company, not the organization, pay for birth control costs, but those today are still not satisfied. mary is live in the newsroom with a look at how they could change the way you drive. >> when a car is moving, text messaging and are the phone texts would be limited to two second glances and one hand operation. the transportation department is also proposing that cars be limited when it comes to features features that distract drivers. manufacturers are being asked to design dashboards so that distracting devices are disabled. the agency has plans for hearing around the country on the proposed rules.

a construction accident shakes the world trade center site this morning. a crane carrying a load of steel beams drops them from more than 40 stories. the accident occurred in a section of the site which is closed off to the public. new york city's building department is investigating the incident. angry soccer fans start a riot in egypt. these people are protesting the violence that left 74 people dead after a soccer match in port said. that day, activists claimed

steel doors were bolted shut and dozens were crushed to death. they want authorities to prosecute those responsible. a parliamentary is blaming rowdy fans and black security. -- lack security. a fine in a fatal gas leak explosion in san francisco. jessica kartalija has more from the newsroom. >> reporter: in addition to the fine, pacific gas and electric says safety testing and shoring up the pipeline system could top $1.7 billion by the end of this year. the explosion september 2010, killed eight people, injured 58, and destroyed an entire neighborhood. investigators found pipeline defects caused the rupture while a lack of testing and poor record keeping by bge were also factors. p g&e is also facing dozens of lawsuits filed by victims of that explosion. vic? >> pipeline testing alone will cost the company an additional $120 million.

it looks like, right now, it may pass the carolina coast. if it comes a little further to the north, we'll probably see some rains or rain-snow mixture on sunday. it's all going to depend on how much cold air it gets in this system and how far north or south that low pressure can track. at this point, there's really no consensus at all. one thing is for sure. friday and saturday will be sunny and mild. if the cold air can catch up with some of that moisture, then maybe some wet snow, particularly north and west of the city, by later in the day on sunday. of course, we'll be tracking that for you tomorrow and on saturday. i think tim in the morning, will have a pretty good estimate of what we expect to happen here on sunday. northwest winds on the bay. 10 to 15. and a small craft advisory out there tomorrow. bay temp around 42. tonight, the rains ending. cloudy for the most part. but breaks later, 36. tomorrow, another great day. sun and a few clouds. back up to 54 degrees. whatever happens on sunday, the
