terror plot foiled. >> the fbi arrests the suspect before he can carry out an attack at the u.s. capital. >> hi, i'm kai jackson. >> and i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. we have breaking news for you. terror suspect arrest. a moroccan man is taken into cust good -- custed ony -- custody during the operation. fbi agents gave him the bombs and guns that were inoperable. >> reporter: the fbi arrested the suspect near the u.s. capital today, after agents gave him a vest he believed was filled with explosives. cbs news has learned the suspect is amin alkhalify.

a 29-year-old morocan man who was living in alexandria, virginia, on an expired visa. the man expressed interest in launching a terror attack. >> reporter: undercover agents developed a relationship with alkhalify over the last few months, other learning that he wanted to be the first suicide bomber on u.s. soil. >> reporter: the suspect met with the agents friday morning and was given what he thought was a suicide vest. he was arrested a short time later as he set out on his mission. in a statement, capital police say, quote, at no time was the public or congressional community in any danger. in washington, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> congress was in session today and went about its routine business without any disruptions. >> another beautiful winter day. but some big changes are coming right now. it is sunny and mild. but we could see some wintry weather this weekend. meteorologist tim williams is tracking first warning live

doppler radar. hi, tim. >> hello, mary. gamp, everyone. important to note that today and tomorrow are going to be temperatures well above the average. we'll be in the 50s on both days. while you see high pressure in control in our forecast forecast. we are watching this system just developing down around the gulf states. that will pick up and head in our direction. so much so, the national weather service has issued a winter storm watch in effect for parts of the west virginia panhandle right around virginia. that is in effect on sunday a.m. through sunday late. but as you see, nothing in effect for maryland just yet. right now, we're looking at temperatures in the 50s. 38 in oakland is the coldest temperatures in the higher elevations. 53 on the shore. and with that high pressure in control, we are still going to be looking at mild air moving into the region on saturday. so our stage is really set for a nice weekend. but that blast is going to make things a little tricky on sunday. we'll talk about how it impacts your weekend ahead in your complete updated first warning forecast.

are censuring a once powerful colleague. weijia jiang explains what this means for the future of state senator ulysses currie. >> the maryland state senate voted unanimously to censure senator ulysses currie, which means currie himself approved the resolution. >> i will not stand here and make excuses. i'll a person with flaws and i do have weaknesses. i never intended to do anything that would bring harm -- dishonor to you, my wife, or me. i am deeply sorry that i did so and promise that i would never do so again. >> currie failed to disclose nearly a quarter million dollars that he received from shoppers warehouses as a private consultant. in november, currie was acquitted of charges.

but an ethics committee decided he should be censured. >> i think senator currie acted in a lot of dignity and grace. when he agree said with the report and urged his colleagues to vote yes on the censure resolution. and he proceeded to vote yes on the censure resolution himself. >> reporter: mike miller removed him permanently of the committee. the ethics committee also made several other recommendations. so far, not all of them have been enforced. weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> reporter: and this is the first time a maryland senator has been disciplined by the chamber in 14 years. >> former baltimore raven jermaine lewis is out of jail on $50,000 bail. he is charged with not properly restraining his 4-year-old in the car's front seat. he's also facing charges of

driving without a license. lewis was released this morning. he also faces charges of reckless driving and resisting arrest in baltimore county from the stop in august. a toddler is discovered walking all alone on a busy street in washington, d.c. eyewitness news is live. jessica kartalija explains what happened. jess? >> that's exactly right, kai. that little girl was walking unsupervised, along f street. a very busy street in washington, d.c., until two women found her. >> reporter: it was along a busy street in washington, d.c. where two friends on their lunch break saw a toddler wandering all alone. >> as we seen her wandering around, we had actually stopped the little girl because she went running toward the street. >> a little girl, just two or three years old, appeared to be lost near the verizon center thursday. >> i said, i have to stay here until we find somebody. >> so we seen on her badge, it

said cambridge day care. >> reporter: the two women found a police officer who walked the toddler into the arena. inside, they found five other children from the kids bridge day care center, who were also separated from the group. >> i have a child day care. and i'm wondering now, is it safe to send them out on a field trip? >> reporter: evelyn miller, the director of the day care center, says 28 children were taken to verizon to see disney on ice. when a staff member got lost in the rest room, they got lost in a crowd of people leaving the show. >> fortunately, all of the children from the group were returned home from that field trip. >> what a frightening story, jessica, thank you. >> the day care said they had several staff members on the field trip and this should not have happened. lock has mat teams after he

the second son of dutch queen betrix is fighting for his life, after being buried in an avalanche in the austrian alps. prince yo han frisco was skiing when the massive snow came roaring down. he was flown to the hospital. doctors say his condition is stable. but his life remains at risk. austria has been blanketed with heavy snow in recent weeks. nick cannon's health doesn't appear to be get anything better. cannon is quitting his role on a new york radio show.

still, americans say it is under control. fed said they had intended to keep interest rates low through at least 2014. the postal service says it needs to eliminate saturday deliveries as it struggles to stay in business. the post master general predicts it will lose as much as $18 billion each year by 2015, if congress doesn't give it approval. that's your money watch. for more, go to cbsmoneywatch.com. in new york, i'm alexis christoforous. finding a little comfort on the road could soon come with a little more glitz. alex demetrick reports, maryland's two travel plans are only one vote away from a $65 million do-over. >> reporter: northbound and southbound lanes of i-95, sit maryland's only two travel plazas, offering fuel, food and rest rooms. what they don't offer is new. so they're coming down.

we are looking at a forecast that is very, very tricky. we just used the term tricky. but you'll understand as much as we do as we start to talk about this. right now, we're at 52 degrees. 26 is the dew point. winds from the west/northwest, at 13 miles per hour. 52 degrees means we are already well above average of 45 degrees. we'll be in the 50s again tomorrow, well above average. we can actually call this kind of warm. this west/northwesterly wind is behind the rain that came through yesterday. so the winds will start to calm down. that's what you're looking at right now. right around the area, 38. 50 in elkton. 54 on the shore. around the immediate metro area, everyone in the mid- to upper 40s, to the low to mid- 50s. 50 in rock hall. 52 in annapolis and 52 on kent island. those winds on kent island all coming in from the west/northwest. it is that clockwise flow around that high bringing in very dry, very comfortable air.

that is going to be with us right on through tomorrow. let's look at this. the high pressure is responsible for all of this nice, mild air and clear skies that is around the mid-atlantic now. this storm system that is now developing in the gulf is going to pick up moisture and start heading our way. by tomorrow morning, it's going to be around alabama. by sunday morning, it's going to be moving up toward the carolinas. and by sunday evening, it's going to be exiting off the carolina coastline. the key here is just how close it stays to the coastline. the closer it stays, the more snow we get, the farther east and south, the more rain we get. and if it's really far south, we may get nothing at all out of this. and that is the real key here. high pressure is going to ease on off here. cool air is in place. we'll start to see this by early on sunday afternoon. by mid- to late evening, we'll start to see some clearing. and by late night, we'll actually start to see some clear skies as it moves completely off the carolina coast and out to sea.

surveillance for about a year. sun is shining here in maryland. simply feels like spring. but some winter weather could be headed our way. bob is tracking first warning weather. bob? >> beautiful, quiet, spring- like day. quick look at radar. really nothing going on around here temporarily. but there is a system beginning to develop down around the northern gulf. and it's going to be tracking across georgia to carolinas, eventually by sunday. and in that position, off the carolina coast, it will begin to bring moisture in our region. well, i'll tell you what that means in just a minute. first of all, let's take a look at temperatures right now. very mild now. 52 here. 54. ocean city. cold spot, oakland at 34. tomorrow it's going to be a beautiful day. just like today. but when that low approaches saturday night and sunday, it will bring with it colder air from the north/northwest. we are looking for rain and then a rain-to-snow mixture. and eventually, probably in most areas, at least for several hours, all snow

sometime sunday afternoon, to sunday evening. come back and tell you how much we expect in just a few minutes. vic? >> okay, bob. thank you. stay with wjz for first warning weather. to find the latest, log onto wjz.com. a plane carrying marijuana is intercepted after flying near marine 1 with the president aboard. kai is live in the newsroom with the story. kai? >> that's right, denise. police discovered about 40 pounds of marijuana on board the plane, after it landed at long beach airport. the small plane was in violation of a temporary flight restriction over the city of los angeles. that air space was designated for marine one. that's the helicopter carrying president barack obama. two fighter jets went up, eventually forcing the plane to land. the secret service discovered the marijuana while questioning the pilot. he has since been arrested. the secret service says the president was never in any danger. a pilot believed to be drunk, delays a flight in nebraska for hours.

a pilot said he may have been drunk and unfit to fly. the pilot was never arrested. frontier airlines says it is investigating the incident. media mogul rupert murdoch rushes to defend his latest media tabloid. police are investigating several of his employees as they look at bribery and phone hacking. >> reporter: cameras captured media mogul rupert rupert murdoch. workers handed out copies of the sun tabloid, as murdoch headed to the newsroom to do damage control. his visit comes less than a week after police arrested five senior staff members. accusing them of paying bribes to police for news tips. murdoch told reporters illegal activities will not be tolerated. but he declared his unwavering support for his journalists and said workers suspended amidst

police investigations can now return to their post. >> reporter: murdoch has said he has no plans to shut down britain's best-selling tabloid. in fact, he'll have an edition. british sun. >> last july, murdoch was forced to close the 168-year- old news of the world. a police investigation uncovered journalists were hacking into the voice mails of celebrities. and families of murder and terror victims. more than 60 people have sued the paper and won. many employees working in murdoch's empire are said to be anxious and fearful of more fallout. some are angry murdoch led internal investigators. and turn any suspicious findings over to police. in london, tina kraus, wjz eyewitness news. a popular infant pain reliever is being recalled today. and jessica kartalija is in the newsroom with more on the warning from johnson & johnson.

jessica? >> reporter: johnson & johnson is recalling all infant tylenol here in the u.s. the problem surrounds the newly-designed release a few months ago. it includes a cover to make dosing easier. some complained when they inserted the plastic syringe, it pushed the plastic flow back into the water. this involves 100 grape- flavored ti10ol. customers can -- tylenol. customers can continue to use it if the flow restricter stays in place. >> customers can also return the product for a full refund. so much congestion out there. 95 seeing problems in both directions. if you're traveling in that southbound direction, just bumper to bumper, from whitemarsh boulevard past the beltway. in the northbound direction, heavy from the split in that direction. on the top side inner loops, you're looking at about 25 minutes there. over to 95. the west side inner loop, 35 minutes at least, from 95

in the aftermath of the child sex charges against jerry sandusky. failing to provide legal defense. the attorney representing penn state says the insurance company said it would most likely cover this in its defense. but now, pma wants to deny coverage. penn state is asking for more than $50,000 in damages. the insurer has 20 days to respond. a new york times reporter is being remembered today. he died in syria, after suffering an apparent asthma attack. gigi barnett has more on the pulitzer prize-winning award. >> reporter: he covered the middle east for nearly 20 years as a reporter for the washington post, new york times and the u.s. secretary clinton remembers him as a talented writer.

>> he was someone i always turned to and read to carefully. and if i didn't have it time when i got to the press reporting. >> he won two pulitzer prizes for his award in iraq. a photographer with him carried his body over from syria to turkey. a guilty verdict and the defendant collapses, not uncommon in the courtroom. but as joan murray reports from south florida, there was additional drama when the man told deputies he it taken poison. >> reporter: just as he was being fingerprinted, marran staya collapsed. before the commotion, stroya had drunk an unknown liquid from this aspirin bottle. he told deputies it was poison. the 7th floor of the courthouse was closed, as stroya was taken

out on a stretcher. he's the same man you may remember last year, who came to the courthouse with a gun and threatened to kill himself. in that case, a judge talked stroya out of shooting himself. stroya said at the time, he was upset over his divorce and child support case. >> and that was joan murray reporting. it turned out the so-called poison was simply water. and the defendant is now back in jail. a man is in the hospital after he jumped off a greyhound bus while it was on a highway in tennessee. it happened on interstate 40 near memphis. police say the man called 911 and said he had been kidnapped and was being held hostage in a, quote, big metal house on wheels, unquote. the man then kicked out a bus window and jumped out. the bus was going about 70 miles an hour at the time. police in massachusetts are trying to catch two criminals they say used a pet to commit their crimes. surveillance video shows a woman walking a dog.

seems innocent. but police say she was the lookout. and while her partners go inside and rob the apartment. police have connected this with the crimes of several high-end burglaries but so far no arrests have been made. police are looking for someone who put an animal trap on a hiking trail. a cat was caught and had to have a leg amputated. >> reporter: tuesday, the short- haired tabby nearly died. this is how he was found. along the popular hiking trail. his legs were crushed in the steel jaws. and the cat was defenseless in the cold am. >> probably would have become quite dehydrated or starved to death because it simply couldn't free itself. >> reporter: but thanks to a hiker who saved mr. bates, he's now here at animal center recovering. but it wasn't easy. this is a violent injury.

a live look outside right now. beautiful friday. let's keep it this way. keep the snow away from here. >> you gotta keep this in mind. it's 53 degrees this afternoon. tomorrow is going to be 53, 54. the ground is very, very warm. even saturday night. the ground stays warm. the temperatures don't even get to freezing until later in the day on sunday. so even if we see snow on sunday, which is a pretty good chance, a lot of it is going to melt when it comes down, until sunday night, when it gets colder. so even though some of these snowfall amounts you see around, i think a lot of it is just going to melt. and mainly on the grass and trees once again. any slush by sunday night, if it's left out, some of it will probably freeze. because we do expect it to go freezing. late sunday night and early monday morning. and that's really the only caveat to this storm coming

this weekend. going to be like a stream kind -- spring kind of storm. west/northwest wind, 13, the barometer, holding steady right now. 52 here. 54, and 54. oddly enough, places to the south will probably get more snow than places to the north, which is a little unusual for our region. because it's normally a lot colder here and they get more snow. this storm is going to be so far south that once you get across the pa border, may not be a flake of snow. 34 in oakland. heaviest amounts are going to be down here in the mountains of southwest virginia, west virginia areas. and maybe southwest of d.c. could see a couple of inches. 54 now over in ocean city. currently, we're at 48 up in westminster. and the low 50s down by the bay. 53, 36. still way above normal. 45, 27. and the records, 1976. look at that. 76, like that. 1958. 3 above zero. right now, pretty good breeze brought in dry air around the

region. lots of sunshine. here's the problem we have. a little area of low pressure, over arizona, new mexico. it's heading down to the southeast. right now, it's not even the storm. there's rain down here. there's rain in texas, where the drought was the last few years. this was welcome relief for those folks. it will all congeal into one low pressure moving across the carolinas. by sunday, at going to be right on the carolina coast. if it's a little closer to the south, we don't get a flake of snow here. 50 miles further to the north. and yes, we will see snow and probably accumulating snow. there will be colder air, funneling in from the northwest. even the models show the precip, just m reaching -- reaching the mason-dixon line with the heaviest lines down to the south and east. the heaviest areas, in our general region, maybe 1 to 3 inches possible. a wet snow, mainly in the trees. and then by sunday night, storm is gone. it will get breezy behind it
