hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> breaking news, a double fatal accident, on mcdonogh road in randallstown. let's go live to captain mike perry in sky eye chopper 13. captain mike? >> hello, mary. it happened at 2 children -- 2:30 this afternoon. you can see a three-vehicle collision here. two of these vehicles colliding head-on. chopping offer the car in the foreground. and sending the motor in to a sport utility vehicle. we know that two people in each of the cars that collided head- on die the at the scene. the driver of the other vehicle. it is not clear whether that driver was injured or transported to a local area hospital. police have completely closed

mcdonogh road, south of painters mill road. and kristy breslin from traffic will inform you of other detours and incidents at the scene. >> thank you, captain mike perry, reporting live. now, that accident, as captain mike just told us, is affecting the rush hour ride home. let's check in with christy breezy lin -- kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. >> definitely going to have quite an impact. as captain mike said, mcdonogh road is completely close between wine and painters mill road. that's really going to back things up. the best way to get around that would be to take 795, liberty road, or you can take reisterstown road. we expect it to back up onto the beltway at some point. but for right now, if you do not have to travel in that area, that's going to be the best case scenario. we'll continue to bring you up to date on the situation. >> good point. we know schools have probably let out. this could probably affect after-school activities in terms of people getting there.

that is the second deadliest accidents in our area. harford county, three lives are lost in a car crash. weijia jiang reports, two brothers and their sisters were killed in a tragic accident. >> reporter: two maryland families are planning funerals of their three grown children. police say it all happened when their car swerved over double yellow center lines. but at this hour, they don't know why. >> reporter: just before 10:00, monday night, route 543, near bel air shut down. the caotic aftermath-- chaotic aftermath that killed three siblings. along with their sister, 24- year-old ashley bogas. family members say this is the most recent picture they took several years ago. investigators say the threesome was in a 2003 chevy cavalier, heading southbound, when for a reason unknown, the car sideswiped a toyota in the opposite lane. that's when a third car t-boned the bogas car. >> the vehicle actually split

in half. and the debris from the impact actually covered about one- tenth of a mile, along that route 543 stretch. >> reporter: police say two others were routed -- rooted in that accident. >> the state police crash team is still on the scene, looking at what happened last night. and they're looking to see if perhaps alcohol and/or speed were contributing factors to this crash. >> reporter: police say the other two people injured in this accident are in stable condition. reporting at state police headquarters, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> weijia, thank you. wjz spakes -- speaks to the grandmother of the victims coming up all new at 5:00 and 6:00. road rage turns into assault in anne arundel county. denise is in the newsroom to explain who is under arrest and why. >> it started on the side of the road in gambrels county. police say 23-year-old ross sudbrook is facing assault and weapons charges today. he was driving a pt cruiser with another man. they pulled off to switch

seats. a 44-year-old man, driving a ford explorer, allegedly got mad. and the men pulled over to argue. both men got back into their vehicles. and police say the man driving the ford crashed into the pt cruiser, forcing it off the road. the men continued to fight until police arrived and arrested sudbrook. mary? >> all right, denise. thank you. everybody involved was taken to shock trauma for treatment. none of the injuries are said to be life-threatening. police said the men do not appear to know each other. a man who survived a crash is talking about a near death experience. ed lawrence reports for wjz from washington state. >> reporter: professional skier lee stod thought this was going to be the way she died. trapped in an avalanche. >> i didn't really hear anything. and my partner to the right of me started saying, avalanche, avalanche. and at that time, i was the one being swept in. >> reporter: she and 12 other

people were skiing in out-of- bounds territory. this video comes from before the slide. >> the first skier went. i was the second to go. >> suggs said the fifth skier going down the mountain accidentally started the avalanche. within seconds, sugstead was completely surrounded by snow. >> it's kind of better to give in, cross your fingers and hope for the best. >> reporter: she tumbled thousands of feet in 30 seconds. >> it meals like maybe you're in a washing machine and you're being tossed and turned and it's all white. you're not sure which way is up and down. >> she was saved by a special avalanche air bag like this one used by a colorado skier earlier this month. it deployed and helped keep her afloat. >> what it does is keeps you afloat on top of the avalanche. >> reporter: they were ahead of jim jack; chris rudolph and husband and father john brennan, seen here on the left. one of the victims landed just

three feet from sogstead. >> sogstead says none of them had the special backpack. one step closer. this afternoon, a senate committee votes to pass the civil marriage protection act. jessica kartalija is here to explain what happens next. jessica. >> the judicial mayor committee approves a narrow vote in the house. the bill would allow gay couples to meet in civil ceremonies. it is being met with opposition from clergy who worry they could be sue federal they don't perform the ceremony. opponents to the bill are lobbying senators in hopes of killing the bill. back to you. >> all right, jessica, thank you. hear from the two senators on the judicial committee or at least two of them. one for it and one against the bill, coming up all new at 5:00. two new suppliers will help ease critical shortages of two new cancer drugs. the low numbers of the drug

have patients patients and patient -- parents, frightened about missing lifesaving equipment. it is allowing importation of a drug called doxil. -- t is used for ovarian cancers and unavailable for months. at this time drug is used for children with leukemia and a certain type of blood cancer. baltimore county health department says it will have confirmation of the diagnosis in six weeks. anyone who has been in contact with the infected person is being tested. tuberculosis is difficult to track. it requires sustained close contact. anyone with information should contact the health department. the day started out chilly. but the weather improves as the hours tick by. the skies are mostly sunny. the air continues to be mild, though, for february. bob turk is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. hi, bob. >> it was a clear, frosty

updating the breaking news in that double fatal accident in randallstown. here's kristy breslin with more. kristy? >> well, as you know, it's a very serious crash. as you had said, two fatalities in this. the accident occurred at about 40. mcdonogh is closed between winans and painters mills road. right now, we don't have an idea when it will be there. as far as the rest of the region, we're seeing slowing on northbound 95, as you make your approach over to the beltway. the beltway itself on the outer loop, slowing from york road to

getting her 22-month-old child drunk. police say she told doctors the child wouldn't stop crying and couldn't keep a steady balance. doctors found the child was given alcohol and had a blood alcohol level above the state's legal limit. the toddler's mother is now in jail. maryland celebrity chef, brian baltavo is fighting for a cause close to his heart. he spoke in hopes that all students have full stomachs. andrea fujii has the story. >> make a sorbet. >> reporter: frederick native, brian batalvo was on top chef. his passion is now in his hometown restaurants, lunch box and volt. and also making sure children don't go hungry. >> nutrition is the most important thing that has to do with starting a child's day at school. >> reporter: on monday, he testified in front of a house of delegates subcommittee. supporting the governor's 2013

budget that includes an additional $560,000 for school breakfast. right now, under the state-run program, 228 schools participate. >> reporter: the additional money would bring the total schools receiving breakfast to 274. out of 780 schools statewide. >> reporter: maryland families are struggling. i know you had difficult economic decisions to make. but maryland families were in fiscal crisis. kids are going to school hungry. >> reporter: supporterps say one in five maryland families can't provide enough food for their children. baltagio testified that this is a good start but a drop in the bucket. >> it bothers me that we're in a country that has such great wealth. and we can't feed our own children. >> reporter: andrea fujii, wjz eyewitness news. >> if the additional school breakfast money is approved, it would help 20,000 more maryland students. >> a history-making morning on wall street.

the dow climbs above the 13,000 mark for a little bit. the dow ends up 16. s&p is up a point. nasdaq down 3. let's go to new york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. >> reporter: the dow pass the 13,000, about two hours into the trading day. the last time it crossed that milestone was may 2008. four months before lehman brothers collapsed, sparking the financial crisis. stocks got a boost from a second bailout. the $172 billion package is an exchange for tough cost-cutting measures. greece needs that money to avoid going bankrupt next month. home depot stock climbed after reporting better than expected quarterly earnings. warm weather helped drive small- scale projects. and builders broke grounds on more homes. profits at macy's also beat estimates. the department store chain also says strong holiday and online sales helped push quarterly earnings up 12%.

analyst says macy's, which benefits from bloomingdale's's is benefiting. economists worry that rising gas prices could put the brakes on rising gas prices. triple a says the national average is $3.58. it's up 26 cents since the beginning of the year. and the highest price they've seen since february. experts say oil disruption from iran and the driving season, are expected to push prices even higher at the pump. that's your money watch. for more, head to cbsmoneywatch.com. at the new york stock exchange, i'm alexis christoforous. a michigan teenager is being called a hero, after he saves his grandfather's life. the two were working on a car together when it collapsed on top of his grandfather. the teen says adrenaline kicked in. and he lifted the car up. so his grandfather could get out. his grandfather was injured. he is now home from the hospital. he's recovering. bibit that kid couldn't even

another day. sun. >> sun again. >> it was clear last night. but a very frosty morning. the airport actually got down to 23 this morning. some neighborhoods were down to 20. downtown, stayed around the freezing mark. but warmed up nicely. almost doubled that. just close to 50 now. take a look at temperatures

now. they have finally shot up a little bit this afternoon. 49. not quite as warm as we expected. clouds did keep things down a little bit. 38% humidity. still quite dry. south winds at 10. barometer holding steady. 30.00 inches. 50, easton. patuxent. d.c. at 50. upper 40, very pleasant afternoon. tonight, going to be around 10 to 12 degrees warmer than last night. which means most places, it will stay just in the low to mid-30s. so we won't see that much in the way of heavy frost tomorrow morning. 48, kent island, annapolis. 46 in rock hall. 45, up in westminster. now, the breeze has picked up. but it's a southerly wind. and that means it's just not going to get that cold. the next few days are going to get mild and even warmer by thursday. you're not going to believe the temperatures we are predicting for thursday. 20-mile-an-hour winds now for hagerstown. we're up to 10 miles per hour. it's going to be a little breezy. this morning, a few clouds north of us. during the afternoon, clouds increase.

came across the region. now they're gone. for the most part, some breaks in the cloud cover. it am generally be clear to partly cloudy overnight tonight. take a look at the bigger picture. low pressure over northern illinois, with little snow to the north. showers to the south. they dried up before they got here. you may have seen a few drops on the windshield. but primarily all of that activity well to the north and west, as has been the case, pretty much all winter long. most of those low pressures have passed to our northwest, keeping us in generally mild air. as a little snow activity across new york and pennsylvania right now. most of it is very, very light. tomorrow, high pressure will move off the east coast. our winds go back to the south/southwest. mild air, even warmer on thursday. it could get conceivably to close to 70 on thursday. and then this front comes through. on friday. with a good chance of showers. there may be a shower wednesday or maybe late thursday. but most of the rain this week will probably be on friday with the front. and it will get colder for the weekend.

force base, the main u.s. military base in afghanistan. they held up partially-burned copies of the koran, blaming nato troops for throwing the holy books away with a pile of trash. nato officials are trying to do damage control. the top general in the country says it was a mistake. he's ordered an investigation and is offering an apology. >> i promise you, this was not intentional in any way. >> reporter: an afghan official says local workers on the base saw what was going on and recovered the burning books. the incident has angered afghanistans. this man says they are the enemy of our soil, our honor, and our koran. u.s. helicopters fired flares to try to break up the crowds. but after a decade of war, protestors are fed up. they threw stones and demanded that troops leave their country if they can't bring peace.

rita nissan, wjz eyewitness news. >> nato troops plan to leave afghanistan in 2014. >> controversy is heating up again, surrounding the president's healthcare bill and birth control. kai is in the newsroom with more on what is happening now. >> thousands of protestant pastors are joining catholic leaders to denounce the requirement. more than 2,500 passengers and evangelical leaders have signed a letter, asking president obama to reverse the mandate. critics are calling it a violation of religious freedom. the president recently offered a compromise, in which insurers would pay for the contraceptive instead of the relig out-- religious groups. >> president obama says there is no more room for compromise on the issue. jury questioning starts tomorrow in the trial of the rutgers student, accused of using a web cam to spy on his roommate, tyler clemente. the teen later committed

suicide. darvin raffy could face a list of charges that could land him in jail for up to 10 jeers. >> reporter: years. >> reporter: like so many teenagers, darvin communicated mostly online. now, the e-mails, text messages and tweets he sent are likely to be used against him, as prosecutors try to prove he harassed tyler clemente because he believed his roommate was gay. according to the records, even before he met clemente, he chatted to a friend, "f" my life, he's gay. >> reporter: and he twice set up a camera when clemente had a man in the room. the second posting on twitter, yes, it's happening again. two days after he discovered that ra vi had spied on him, clemente took a train to new york city. at 8:42 p.m. that evening, he left this

message on facebook, jumping off the george washington bridge, sorry. clemente's body was discovered in the hudson river a week later. ironically, the dirge -- digital record may also help ra vi's defense. his attorneys are expected to use clemente's own online postings to show that he did not feel intimidated. >> doesn't seem so bad, laugh out loud, he chatted to a friend, after he realized he had been spied on. >> reporter: the night clemente took the train to new york, darvin sent a text that said in part, i have known you were gay and i have no problem with it. i don't want your freshman year to be ruined because of a petty misunderstanding. >> that was erin moriarte reporting for us. an lifts say the charges against ra vi are unusually harsh. the music group sugar land is firing back after a lawsuit claims they are partly responsible for a deadly stage

collapse. seven people were killed when wind gusts toppled the stage at the indiana state fair last year. in court documents, the band said it had nothing to do with the venue construction. and that the winds were an act of god. fair officials recently testified that they asked to delay the concert before the storm rolled in. but they were denied. sugar land is denying that claim. friendsfriends and classmates came together to grieve a friend. grief counselors were on hand at parkville middle school, to help students deal with the death of 13-year-old michael trulock. relatives say trulock fell ill after drinking at a party over the weekend and on the ride home. he opened the car door to vomit and fell out when he was struck by another car and died. a side homecoming today for several u.s. airmen who made the sacrifice for their country, including one who is from maryland. jessica kartalija is in the newsroom with more on what officials are saying. >> reporter: well, vic, the body of 26-year-old julian

sultan arrived this morning. he and three others were killed in an aircraft accident saturday. military officials say the men were returning from a reconnaissance mission at the time. no one else was injured. airman shuttan was from prince george's county. >> the cause of the accident still under investigation. but military officials say the plane did not crash due to hostile fire. another case of road rage lands a man in jail today. state police say the man tried several times to run another vehicle off the road. both drivers eventually stopped and got out of their cars. and that is where 54-year-old gray jordan allegedly struck the man several times with his walking stick. he was arrested and released on $7500 bail. today is fat tuesday. and that means a little bit of mardi gras is making its way to charm city. ♪ [ music ] the peter is in full swing in new orleans. but down in fells point, local

it's not a great chance. but maybe a shower sometime tomorrow night. even warmer on thursday. denise? >> oh, boy. thank you, bob. let's check on the roads with kristy breslin. >> hi, denise. hi, everyone. let's bring you up to date on the accident in the randallstown area. here is the video footage that we have on it. it was around 2:40 in the afternoon. you can see, two fatalities in this accident. mcdonogh remains closed between winans and painters mills road. to avoid this whole area, we still don't know when it's going to be reopened. you can take 795, reisterstown road. or even deer park. as far as the rest of the region goes, traveling on the west side inner loop, slowing there from frederick road, to security boulevard. north side outer loop, expect about 15 minutes there. from york road to charles street. average speed, about 35 miles per hour. and northbound 95. making your way towards the beltway on that corner. other accidents include old court at lightfoot drive.

thousands of protestors clash with police in chile. it happened during a demonstration supporting residents, blocking highways in southern chile, demanding more social benefits. police used tier gas and-- tear gas and water cannons in an attempt to disperse the crowds. they are demanding fuel subsidies, better education,

and better infrastructure. a man stopped his truck and confronted a car load of men. one of the men got out of the car and attacked him. he was able to make it back to his truck. but the men who beat him followed in their car. and started shooting at the truck and it exploded. so far, police have not found the men responsible for the attack. a car flipped several times, then crashes several times. gary neurem burg has more on what happened. >> reporter: this happened at about 6:30. a bmw is apparently traveling more than 100 miles an hour in the eastbound lanes, racing toward the traffic light, at sheriff road, when it lost control, hitting the curb by this chevron station, and flipping repeatedly, hitting lots of things. >> you can see several things there, a sign. looks like a trash can of some type. over here, there's the air pumps that were in place next

to the vacuum. >> this box is upside down as a result of that collision. and then it came across through the fence. there's a fence there. >> in the process, it hit this suv, injuring the driver who was hospitalized. the bmw then slammed into the building. the impact apparently throwing an occupant from the car. that body pinned beneath it. the impact threw parts of the wheel 20 feet into the air. where it's still embedded in the building. debris rained on martin luther king highway. police have not determined why that driver was going so fast. >> that was gary neurem burg reporting. police say it could take weeks to sort out all the details in the crash. the former teacher in california, accused of taking inappropriate pictures of his students, appears in court. and jessica cart kartalija has more. >> reporter: mark berndt pleaded not guilty today.

police say he took bondage typed photos of his stiewnltsdz -- students at mira monte elementary. the victims were between the ages of 7 and 10 years old. police say the children thought they were playing a game. just days after berndt was arrested, another mira monte teacher was charged with felony lewd act with a girl. that teacher also pleaded not guilty. denise? >> all right, thank you, jessica. berndt is being held on $23 million bail. he is set to return to court next month. police are set to return to court. police say this man broke into the caribbean home last month while holding a machete. police say fidel brown got away with $1,000. he turned himself in on sunday. police believe brown did not intentionally target bryant. a new york bar brawl sends the grandson of the latest

and hospitals do not diagnosis properly until it's too late. >> when women arrive at the hospital, having a heart attack, with symptoms different from chest pain, their care might not happen as immediate. >> reporter: researchers say that's why as many as 14% of women are dying of heart attacks in the hospital, compared to 10% of men. >> reporter: each year in the u.s., more women die of heart disease than men. and heart disease kills more women than all cancers combined. >> reporter: doctors say there are signs a woman can look out for besides chest pain. >> it's like jaw pain, shortness of breath, back pain, nausea, fatigue, and simply sweating. >> reporter: cardiologist suzanne steinbalm says if you're noticing these symptoms, getting help immediately could be critical. >> the quicker you can get to treatment, the quicker we can save heart muscle. and the more likely we can prevent you from dying. >> reporter: lolina franklin had a stent put in to unblock an artery. >> i am definitely lucky to be alive today.
