autopsy. police have not identified either of the parties, pending noteification of next of kin. police have said that speed may have been a prox mate -- proximate cause of this accident. they continue their investigation. but it appears they are wrapping up here at the accident scene. back to you on tv hill. >> all right, captain mike. thank you. and kristy breslin will have more on this crash coming up on wjz traffic control. police make an arrest in a case of violent road rage. tonight, a maryland man is charged in connection with a stabbing and a car crash that all started with a stabbing at a red light. mike hellgren has new details on the suspect. mike? >> reporter: kai, this was a terrifying ordeal. police have charged a man from brooklyn. and the man who was stabbed in this, we have learned, was married just hours before it happened.

>> reporter: the frightening case of road rage unfolded on a busy stretch of crain highway in gambrels. and police have now arrested 23- year-old ross brandon sudbrook, and charged him with assault and reckless endangerment. cops say he stabbed a 44-year- old during an altercation that lasted for miles and stunned those who watched it. >> the driver of the explorer and the guy who stabbed him, both got out of the vehicle first. and the guy who did the stabbing, approached the other guy and tried to fight him. blood just started pumping out of his shirt. it was an obscene amount of blood. >> reporter: according to police, sudbrook was a passenger in a car, and exchanged words with a guy in a ford ford explorer. that exchange got so intense, police say sudbrook stabbed the other man at crain highway and took off, with the stabbing victim, eventually running him off the highway about a mile up at churchville road. >> this is a very congested road in the route 3.

this is 4:00 in the afternoon. lots of folks on the road. this is a very, very dangerous situation. >> reporter: the new wife of the man who was stabbed said he is in good condition but the family is fine. but they're still trying to sort out just what happened. >> reporter: none of the injuries were life-threatening. police say the blood on sudbrook's face was from the fight. his prior records include disorderly conduct. court records show he was on probation until july. >> reporter: investigators say the men did not know each other. >> reporter: and police tell us the investigation is ongoing. they have left open the possibility of more charges. i did stop by sudbrook's house today. but no one was home to comment. live in ann anne arundel county. mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you. three other people were injured in addition to the two men involved in that incident. a crash in harford county claims the lives of three siblings. police say two brothers and their sister all died when their car smashed into another

vehicle. wjz is live at state police headquarters. weijia jiang just spoke with the victim's grandmother. weijia? >> reporter: the grandmother says the victims were all visiting her for the weekend. and all three had plans to move in. but instead of making living arrangements, she's making funeral plans. >> reporter: on this road, just south of bel air, a family was ripped apart. >> i love my grandbabies. and we were very close. >> reporter: john berrenoskey lost all three of hers in one incident. two brothers and their sister, seen here in their most recent photo together, were killed monday night. they were all riding inside a 2003 chevy cavalier. >> a vehicle with three siblings in it was traveling southbound on 543. actually sideswiped a vehicle

that was traveling northbound. >> reporter: police say that's when a third car was there. >> reporter: police say the crash was so hard, the cavalier was split in half. and there was so much debris, it littered a mile of the road. >> back at the scene, a state police crash team is piecing together what happened. >> they're looking to see if alcohol and/or speed were contributing factors to this crash. >> reporter: and loved ones try to understand why. >> they were the greatest kids. i loved them dearly. and they were wonderful to me. they always hug and kiss me. yes, she said, i love you, nanny. >> reporter: heartbreaking. those victims had no other siblings. right now, police are still trying to figure out which one of them was driving. reporting live in pikesville, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> police say the two other people injured in the crash are in stable condition tonight. the same-sex marriage bill, passed by the house, gets its

first vote of approval in a senate committee. today, a committee vote sends sends that measure to the floor of the senate. wjz is live. political reporter pat warren explains the questions raised about the bill today. pat? >> most of those questions centered around the religious protections in the bill. >> reporter: the house of delegates on friday passed the same-sex marriage bill, crafted by governor martin o'malley, to include protections for religious organizations with an amendment intended to send off challenges in court. questions about those protections were raised in senate committee today. >> what if the law goes into effect and is in effect for two or three years. and then there is a court case with regard to religious protections and the religious protections in the bill were struck down. >> i'm convinced that all of the religious conscience protection provisions that we've got in here are solid. they're going to step.

>> but it also argued they don't go far enough. >> i think on the floor, we'll see amendments that deal with broader religious protections for people's personal, moral and religiousligious beliefs. >> reporter: but don't expect the bill to pass, since changing it would send it back to the house of delegates. and supporters don't want that. >> we start amending it. we send it over to the house side. and some people would like it to be an intimate regress. and have it go on forever. it's time to question the rights of tens of thousands in the state. >> reporter: the judicial proceedings committee passed the bill out of committee by a vote of 7-4. and it could be on the floor. that senate tomorrow. i'm pat warren, reporting live. now, back to you. >> the senate passed the same- sex marriage bill last year and there is no indication that any votes have changed. after baltimore's first grand prix is plagued by money woes, there will be changes as to how the race is handling its finances. >> reporter: the new company

hired to take over the grand prix wants to keep the races private. that's according to baltimore city's contract, with downforce racing. downforce racing was picked to run the race for the next five years, after the previous organizer accumulated $12 million in debt. it will be required to file monthly financial reports with the city. >> the new grand prix contract is expected to go before the board of estimates tomorrow. a milestone today on wall street. dow jones breaks 13,000 for the first time since the u.s. financial crisis began nearly four years ago. analyst says -- analysts say this could get investors to pump more money back into the stock market. dow finishes up, 15 points. s&p gains a point. nasdaq is down 3. temperatures are also on the rise. it's another pleasant winter day, filled with plenty of sunshine out there. the skies are clear as we take a live look outside on a beautiful february evening. let's check in with bob turk and the first warning weather

center. and more on the mild air on the way to maryland. >> tonight is probably going to run maybe 10 to 12 degrees warmer than last night. because it was pretty chilly this morning. right now, take a look at temps. it got up to 49. 50 in d.c. 45 in oakland. now, tomorrow, expecting those winds to go out of the southwest. even warmer air coming in tomorrow. probably about 12 to 13 degrees warmer than this afternoon. and that brings us into the low 60s. and believe it or not, even warmer on thursday. kai? >> bob. thank you. preliminary tests confirm a case of tuberculosis on the campus of university of maryland baltimore county. the baltimore county health department says the initial test shows a positive result for the airborne disease. health officials say they will not have a final confirmation for about six weeks. the potentially-infected person has been isolated. an important update to a story wjz reported earlier this

month. a critical shortage of a drug needed to treat childhood leukemia may be over for now. >> reporter: with the lives of thousands of children with leukemia at stake today, the fda announces a new supplier for the drug metho trexate, which is in very short sly -- supply, in part because of the profit companies. >> we're also pleased to announce that hastirra also galvanized into action in response to the shortage. ramped up manufacturing. and has received an earlier- than-expected supply that should be in hngds of hospital and -- hundreds of hospital and treatment centers today and going forward. >> reporter: as wjz reported, metho trexate was one of the things that saved the life of brenda frese's son tyler, who was battling leukemia. she and her husband are on a drive to increase supply of

these crucial drugs. >> i can't imagine them telling us, there's a drug there that is going to help save your kid's life, but it's not available. >> reporter: they urged lawmakers to investigate. they are pushing bipartisan legislation to beef up the fda's power to prevent shortages like this in the future. >> i just wish some of my colleagues would meet some of these little kids with no hair who have been through treatment and are surviving but then find out in the middle that there may not be a drug available for them the next day. >> they also announced today, new suppliers for the drug doxil. it treats ovarian cancer and has not been available for months. still ahead at 5:00. did nato troops burn the koran? this sparks angry protest at a military base in afghanistan. coping with grief. students are remembering a 13- year-old killed in a tragic accident, involving alcohol. what friends are saying about him coming up on eyewitness news.

hundreds gather to show support for disability funding in downtown annapolis. monique griego has more. >> reporter: hundreds of people make a call for action to help the developmentally-disabled in downtown annapolis. >> they're begging for a chance to have life. >> reporter: crystal holman was part of a crowd that marched to

lawyers' mall. her son suffers from severe autism and spent years on the list waiting for services. >> there's no funding for services. we can't help you. >> reporter: they are hoping to bring attention to the desperate need for funding. brian cox says recently there has been some help with governor o'malley dedicating money to the cause in his recent budget and alcohol tax. >> we're here to say, this is progress, don't cut the budget. there's more work to be done. >> reporter: like many here, holman was able to get off the waiting list, thanks to the alcohol tax, which provided $50 million in services. >> reporter: right now, 6500 people are on the waiting list. 1200 are considered to be in critical need. >> reporter: teresa herbert's son jesse is one of them. she fears without help, his future is uncertain. >> i want him to be happy. have a job, have a home, maybe

get married. all of these things. and these things are not going to happen without community support. >> reporter: and the majority of the money from the alcohol tax went to providing services for people in desperate need of care. kai, back to you. >> monique, thank you. the governor was recently able to restore $25 million in funding. if you're waiting for someone to get home from work, let's check on our roads. here's kristy breslin, wjz traffic control. we have been following the situation in the randallstown area. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene there, at mcdonogh road. we do still have it blocked off between winans and painters mill road. the accident did occur, forest oaks at mcdonogh. that was at 2:40 p.m. to avoid any chaos, take reisterstown road, 795, or take deer park drive. as far as the rest of the region goes, if you're traveling on the north side outer loop, we have delays that stretch from york road to charles street. north side inner loop, also seeing some congestion there

from charles street to 95 in that direction. expect at least 25 minutes to get through. on the west side inner loop, delays there from southwestern boulevard to security boulevard. and 70 westbound, heavy there from 29 to marysville road. traveling northbound 895, expect some slowing there from moravia road, over to 95. and a couple of new accidents in the area. erdmann avenue at debolis. also north gay at east preston street. let's take a live look. you can see your drive is not too difficult there. 95 top of the fort mchenry tunnel. this traffic report is brought to you by pizza bolis. stop in for two pizzas, $6.95 each. with the budget ax tarting to swing at the pentagon. maryland's air national guard is taking a big hit. the air force is eliminating the local guard's cargo planes and possibly jobs as well. >> reporter: whether it's delivering a paratrooper or a pallet of supplies, the air

national guard is flying a smaller, twin-engine cargo plane. this spring, crews start deploying to afghanistan. when they return, the air force is planning to eliminate the aircraft and the heart of maryland's airlift capability. >> that is a concern for us. >> reporter: because these planes aren't just used in war, they are used for supplies in disaster zones. removing them will save the air force money, but maybe not jobs. >> you got the flyers, the pilots. you've got the load masters and the maintainers. so 250, 300, somewhere in that range. the individuals to keep this up and run running. >> everybody loves this mission. they love flying. but we understand that we're here to serve the country. and if they take the mission away from us and give us another mission, we'll make that the speed also. >> reporter: that will likely focus on cyber security and intelligence gathering. the guard views that hassa -- as i -- that as a plus. >> while the impact of losing these planes is still down the road, what is in focus right

in washington. 45 in oakland. temperatures running two or three degrees above average this time of year. although this morning, it was awfully chilly. columbia, 49 and annapolis, kept island, down by the bay, at 51 degrees. 49, 23 today. this morning, very frosty, with clear skies, light winds. temperatures really took a nosedive. some spots get to 20. downtown, however, it stayed at 35 degrees. big difference between the airport and downtown. and that's only like eight miles as the crow flies. record, 74 and 8 back in 1895. right now, it's the southerly and southwesterly winds that will keep us about 10 to 12 degrees warmer tonight than last night. and tomorrow will be about 10 or more degrees warmer than today. that means we get into the 60s.

at least upper 50s. clouds this afternoon. and there they go. so cleared out nicely. still have some clouds nicely across the pa. light flurry activity in the mountains. very light stuff. for the most for the, not even reaching the ground. there was snow in minnesota. couple of spots had 4 to 5 inches. a little snow north of chicago. some in michigan. all moving off well to our north and northwest. it's allowing the winds to go back to the southwest. that's going to keep you us in mild air for the rest of the week. until friday night. then it will get colder meantime, maybe a shower thursday night. thursday we get into the really warm stuff. friday, shower activity. maybe a thunderstorm with that front. and then it turns colder for your weekend. but pretty much back to normal. it will be breezy tomorrow, with the southwest. bay temp around 42 degrees. tonight, patchy clouds later on. but not nearly as cold. 35. tomorrow, back up. 62 degrees. with a breeze. but it will be a mixture of clouds and sunshine on a spring-

it is just before 5:29. 49 degrees and mostly clear. good evening, everybody. thank you for staying with wjz eyewitness news. here are stories people are talking about tonight. grief counselors are on hand today at parkville middle school. 13-year-old classmate, killed this weekend along harford road. wjz is live at the school. derek valcourt has more on the message of friends of michael trulock. >> trulock was an 8th grader here. an incredibly popular student. classmates and students taking his death pretty hard. >> reporter: 13-year-old michael trulock is being remembered by his friends for how he lived. >> he is like the nicest person. like he referenced everybody. >> reporter: but it's how he died. saturday, hey and friend -- he and friends were drinking four

loko, a fruit-loaded beverage, loaded with alcohol. the drink made him so sick that he called for a ride home. he opened the door while a car was moving so he could vomit. that's when he fell into the road and was run over. heartbreaking to the teens who knew him and his parents. >> at 13, this isn't something they should have to go through. >> and they don't know how to deal with it. >> reporter: over the last few days, hundreds of kids have stopped by, adding their own tributes to this makeshift memorial, to the scene along the road. many parents choosing to use this tragedy as a teachable moment for their kids. >> i was telling my son and their friends, i said, this is very sad. but maybe this is a sign that he's telling each and every boy and girl not to touch alcohol. >> reporter: laura reese says her sons were close with michael. >> right now, my kids are going through a hard time with this. >> reporter: she's warning her kids about the dangers of alcohol, a lesson michael trulock's mother says, all parents need to teach.

>> it's sad. it's just really sad. and i don't want to see another family have to go through this. >> reporter: letters like this one, sent home, asking to teach about this tragedy. we're live, derek valcourt. michael trulock's family will be taking visitors at evans chapel funeral home, wednesday, from 2:00 to 4:00. a prayer service will be held at 11:00 at st. ursula's church. a car collides with a school bus in howard county. it happened this afternoon at the intersection of pebble beach drive at route 40 in ellicott city. the bus driver wasn't hurt. and there were no children on the bus when it happened. a preliminary investigation indicates the bus had a green light and the right of way. the bodies of four servicemen, including one from maryland are back on u.s. soil. denise is in the newsroom with more on their return home and their final mission. denise? >> reporter: well, kai, the four airmen died when their

plane crashed a few miles from a military base. senior airman julian shloaden returned. they were supporting a mission. the military says it was a routine flight. the pentagon says the cause of the accident is still under investigation. but it is not believed it came under hostile fire. >> he was assigned to the 25th intelligence squadron in florida. nato is trying to head off a public relations nightmare in afghanistan, after troops reportedly burned copies of the koran inside a pile of garbage at a military bails. rita nissan has the story for wjz. >> reporter: more than 2,000 afghans chanted, "death to america" outside bagram air force base. the main u.s. military air base in afghanistan. they held up partially-burned copies of the koran, blaming

nato troops for throwing away the holy books with a pile of crash trash. nato officials are trying to do damage control. the top general in the country says it was a mistake. he's ordered an investigation and is offering an apology. >> i promise you this was not intentional in any way. >> reporter: an afghan official says local workers on the base saw what was going on and recovered the burning books. the incident has angered afghans who already think foreign troops are not respectful of their religion. this man says, they are the enemy of our soil, our honor and our koran. u.s. helicopters fired flares to try to break up the crowds. but after a decade of war, protestors are fed up. they threw stones and demanded that troops leave their country if they can't bring peace. rita nissan, wjz eyewitness news. >> nato troops plan to leave afghanistan in 2014.

the sex scandal involving a los angeles elementary schoolteacher reaches the courtroom. today, mark berndt entered a not guilty plea to allegations that he took lewd pictures of his young students. police say they have seized more than 600 images taken by the 61-year-old. berndt's attorneys claim he is targeted in prison. he's being held on $23 million bail. a second teacher from that school is arrested on child molestation charges days after bernts's arrest. french police are questioning dominique strauss- kahn about a prostitution ring. police say prostitutes told them they had sex with the head. imf over the past two years. strauss-kahn resigned his position after being accused of assaulting a hotel maid in noancht he was later -- in new york. he was later cleared of any

charms. romney's ads are being paid for by a super pack. super packs are quickly turning into one of the most powerful forces in the 2012 campaign. >> reporter: mitt romney tried to win over voters at a town hall meeting at eagle manufacturing in michigan. >> i care about michigan. this is personal for me. >> he's fighting hard to win the state where he was born. but polls show rick santorum was in the lead. that's putting romney on the offensive. >> i don't think rick santorum's track record is that of a fiscal conservative. so i think that will ultimately be interesting in this process and will lead to my getting more support. >> reporter: arizona also holds a primary next tuesday. and sant or -- santorum made a campaign stop there, highlighting his record and taking on president obama. >> reporter: president obama says i'm going to give you the right to healthcare. just give me your money. give me your freedom. and we will provide for you. when the government gives you

rights, they can take those rights awipe. >> the candidates are using a new and powerful weapon in the race for the white house. super packs are raising millions and millions of dollars for their campaign ads. >> reporter: last month alone, super political action committee supporting romney and newt gingrich raised a combined $17 million and spent $24 million. there is no limit to how much money an individual or corporation can donate to a super pack. >> reporter: one of gingrich's biggest donors said he might give as much as $100 million to the super pack. >> and three watch dog groups report every republican candidate and president obama have donors who give cash it their super packs and make the maximum legal contribution possible to their campaign. a second bailup for bruce's boosts stocks today. but the rescue package comes with consequences.

don't go hungry. >> reporter: nutrition is the most important thing that has to start -- to do with starting a child's day at school. >> reporter: on monday, he testified in front of a subcommittee, supporting the governor's 2013 budget that includes an additional $530,000 for the budget. right now, 228 schools participate. >> the additional money would bring the total schools receiving breakfast to 274. out of 780 schools statewide. >> maryland families are struggling. i know you had difficult economic decisions to make. but maryland families were in fiscal crisis. kids are going to school hungry. >> reporter: supporterps say one -- supporters say one in five maryland families can't provide enough food for their children. he testified that this sunday is a good start but a drop in the bucket. >> it bothers me that we're in a country that has such great wealth. and we can't feed our own children. >> reporter: anandrea fujii, wjz eyewitness news.

baltimore county. this is philadelphia road and roz -- red cross -- rossville boulevard. police are investigating the accident. it appears that one person was injured rather severely. and they are being transported to a local area hospital. police are trying to get the accident moved off to the center of the roadway to restore traffic. this is along northbound philadelphia road. traffic going through the old golden ring shopping center here. northbound philadelphia is basically at a standstill all the way back to route 40. back to you on tv hill. >> thank you, captain mike. a massive hailstorm sweeps through southern kansas. this was the scene in wichita. as the snow and ice started pelting roads. strong winds also made it tougher for commuters. many are still in the dark tonight. so far, there have been no reports of any injuries. >> wow. the wet start to the

morning for people in fort lauderdale, florida. crews were out bright and early, working to repair a water main break. look at this. the flooding left some people stuck at home for the day. utility crews say the problem is mostly confined to the street. this is the second water main break in that area in less than a year. in tonight's wjz healthwatch. new research shows women who are having heart attacks often do not feel chest pain. manuel gallegus reports for wjz. that's causing them to die more often in the hospital. >> reporter: lalina franklin was having neck and jaw pain. she had no idea she was on the scrernl -- vernal of a severe heart attack. >> you think of a really bad pain in your chest. and you know, collapsing. i wasn't having any pain at all in my chest. >> reporter: new research in the journal of the american medical association shows 42% of women under 55 do not feel chest pain during a heart attack. and hospitals often don't

diagnose those women properly, until it's too late. >> when women arrive to the hospital, having a heart attack, with symptoms different from chest pain, their care might not happen as immediate. >> reporter: researchers say that's why more than 14% of women are dying from heart attacks in the hospital, compared to 10% of men. >> reporter: each year in the u.s., more women die from heart disease than men. and heart disease kills more women than all cancers combined. >> reporter: doctors say there are signs a woman can look out for besides chest pain. >> like jaw pain, shortness of breath. back pain, nausea, fatigue. and simply sweating. >> reporter: cardiologist suzanne steinbalm says if you're noticing these symptoms getting help immediately can be critical. >> the quicker you can get to treatment, the quicker we can save heart muscle. and the more likely we can prevent you from dying. >> reporter: lalina franklin had a stent put in to unblock an artery. >> i am definitely lucky to be
