wjz live. adam in virginia. >> reporter: that sentence was just handed down a short time ago. george could be in prison until he is 50 years old and just moments ago attorneys on both sides walked out making their first public comments since the trial began. >> george convicted of second degree murder dodges the worst punishment but could face up to 26 years in prison. they ruled the lacrosse player beat his girl friend, love, to death in her apartment in may may 20/10. hughly was obsessed after learning she had slept with another lacrosse player. >> there are no winners in this case. there's nothing but loss everywhere. our hearts go out to the love

family. they've suffered enormously. they could have been more helpful throughout the process of preparing and presenting the case. >> in court hughly showed no emotion during the verdict but started to weep before the sentencing phrase. the mother, sharon, told the jury every year that goes by i feel i'm forgetting pieces. his father didn't show up. instead, hughly's lawyers pled to the jury to spare his sentence. >> he's displayed amazing resilience and courage. he's hopeful and spiritual and we look forward to some

corrections in what happened here tonight. >> so the defense team already talking about corrections but they did not specifically use the word appeal. i have to say the testimony today from the love family during the sentencing phase of the trial was heart breaking and very personal. the love family walked out of the courtroom and made no further comments and did make a brief statement for privacy. the recommendation is simply a recommendation. a judge in virginia will have to finalize it. he can decrease the sentence but not increase it. reporting live, adam may, wjz eyewitness news. >> coverage continues now with jackson and reaction from the out come in the hometown. >> reporter: there's no shortage of reaction.

those we spoke with doubt the verdict will ease the pain of love's heart broken family. >> 167 miles separate the university of virginia from baltimore county where 22 year old yardly love lived. news that her boy friend was convicted of killing her in a drunken rage spread quickly to maryland. >> i think that's the right call. he definitely deserves to be penalized for his actions. >> reporter: during the trial witness testimony appealed love was abused by hughly. residents of montgomery county also spoke. the case of love's murder has drawn a great deal of attention both inside and outside of maryland. eyewitness news found a group

cookies can monitor all of the websites you view. web expert says having your web history tracked can be dangerous. >> it's nervous. some informs we want disclosed and some information we do not want disclosed. >> reporter: he says big privacy changes will be coming to facebook. facebook officials say they will fight the suit in court saying it has no merit. >> the suit is one of a dozen filed against facebook in the 11 states. new organizers for the baltimore grand prix get the lights. they improved a new contract with down force racing. they're taking control after the city fired the original management team due to money problems. they voted against the contract. if you use city water, you could be due a refund.

an audit shows the department of public works overcharge 38,000 customers. the audit shows some customers have been getting estimated bills for years while others got none at all. it's now going to send out $4.2 million in refunds. >> an american journalist killed in syria. syria forces kill american reporter and her french photographer. 57 year old marie was a corresponden for a -- correspondent for a newspaper. >> this is a risk journalist take to inform the world of what's happening. >> just a day before she died she was on tv calling the government's bombardment of

rebels shocking. witnesses say the journalist were hit by a rocket and tried to escape. attacks left hundreds dead and three families say they knew how dangerous her surroundings were but her death still leaves them stunned. >> she got out of it always. we always felt there was a chance she would get out and she's been in situations a hundred times worse than this and managed to get out. >> the journalists were just two of 74 deaths reported in syria. more violent protest today in afghanistan. they're upset that several copies of the koran were burned at a nato military base. they apologized for mistreating the muslim holy books. >> untold stories. ground is broken on the site of a new national black history

museum. obama spoke to the crowd today on the site of what will the national museum of american black history and cultural. congress has pledged half of the 500 million-dollar cost and is scheduled to open in 2015. >> catholics get their church back just in time for ash wednesday. st. catholic patrick church opened tonight for the first time in months. it had been closed for repairs since the earthquake shook the coast last august. it will be used for sunday morning and wednesday evening. >> coming up, terrorer on a run away train. >> diet pills and the dangerous side effects. >> a very mild end of the week. i'll have your forecast next.

>> it is 57 degrees and cloudy in central maryland right now. your forecast coming up. first we have a live update from virginia courtroom where george hughly's murder sentence was differed this evening. let's go to adam. >> reporter: i talked to a lot

of legal experts over the weekend and a lot of people predicted this is what would happen. he was found not guilty on the most serious charge of first degree murder but didn't escape on the manslaughter charge. he did get the middle charge of second degree murder. just about an hour ago just about everybody who has been inside the courtroom for the last three weeks or so walked outside. george hughly's family members, the love family and all who have been keeping a close eye on this walked out of the courtroom and really, not a lot of surprised looks on the people's faces here. this was a verdict they anticipated. george hughly, as a result of this, will serve 26 years in prison. that means he will be in prison in virginia until he is 50 year old and we have new reaction from the lawyers. they spoke moments ago. >> what we do in court is a rough proximation of justice in

any given case. we hope they feel some solace from the out come. >> i think the ones in the courtroom saw his remorse. thank you very much. >> reporter: those statements from the defense attorney very, very brief tonight. they did not specifically use the word appeal but they certainly hinted at that. they said they were looking forward to making corrections in the case. the love family walked out of court today and didn't say anything publicly. they did have a brief statement thanking the prosecution for all their hard work. they haven't made any real public comments on the case. today we heard very emotional testimony from love's brother and sister talking about how the crime has impacted their family. we're going to have to latest on this and wrap it up for you tomorrow morning on the news. adam may, wjz eyewitness news. >> okay, adam.

thank you. >> this cell phone video shows two groups of women brawling inside a delhi at a hotel. the casino says they have permanently banned all those involved. >> chaos in an elementary school in washington state after a third grader is shot. a fellow student fired a gun. an eight year old girl struck in the abdomen and under went surgery tonight. police say they got to gun but still investigating how it got into the school. >> a run away train. windows exploded and cars crushed together. more than 1200 people on board. investigators say they were having troubles with the brakes. >> eight more bodies found

inside the cruise ship. one of the bodies identified at a five year old italian girl. she was the only child listed among the 17 missing people. that also included a couple from minnesota. it run aground when it veered too close to an island. they have removed about two- thirds of the fuel left on the vessel. >> a diet drug has now gained approval. it was previously turned down because of an ingredient linked to heart problems. it now backs the drug because most patients showed a 10% weight loss. grab a lime wedge and salt because it's national margarita day. margaritas are believed to have been invented in the 1930s and
