killed in retaliation. two american soldiers in afghanistan are dead. >> the controversy over the burning of muslim holy books. hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. two american soldiers in afghanistan are dead, killed by an afghan soldier, by violent burnings. >> reporter: afghan police fired on protestors during a third day of violent demonstrations that have now claimed the lives of two u.s. soldiers. cbs news has learned an afghan soldier gunned down two american troops at a military

base in a province of eastern afghanistan. an afghan official says the shooter killed the soldier in retaliation, for the burning of korans at the bagram air base. the killings came hours after the taliban and some radical lawmakers called on afghans to retaliate on american troops. president obama has since sent a letter, apologizing for tuesday's burning incident, calling the burning of the holy book an accident. hamid karzai said u.s. military person burned the holy books out of ignorance. outrage is spreading across the country. these protestors say foreign forces have insulted their culture and don't respect their religion. huge anti-more than demonstrations are expected to sweep across the country on friday, after a day of prayer.

tina kraus, wjz eyewitness news. >> and protests are spreading to more cities and at least 11 people have died in the violence. more military lives are lost. seven u.s. marines are killed in a helicopter crash. denise is in the newsroom with more on this accident. denise? >> reporter: well, kai, it is one of the deadliest military training crashes in years. the crash involved an ah-1w cobra. it carried a uh1 huey helicopter, carrying five marines. all seven marines were killed. they are members of the third aircraft wing in camp pendleton. last summer, three camp pendleton marines were killed in three separate incidents. >> the names of the marines killed may be released sometime this evening. justice for yardly love, a jury convicts george huguely and recommends he spend 26 years in prison. wjz continues with complete coverage. adam may is in charlottesville

with the emotional end to this trial. >> reporter: right before that verdict was read, george huguely made the sign of the cross. and hours later, when he found out he could be in prison when he was 50 years old, he put his hands over his face and started to weep. >> reporter: students faced the conviction and sentence of george huguely. the former uva lacrosse player could serve 20 years in prison. >> there's definitely this unresolved tension about it. >> i think it's fair. >> i think second degree is pretty fair. >> reporter: the verdict came after nine hours of deliberations. jurors did not believe huguely planned to kill his ex- girlfriend yeardley love. they also didn't think it was an accident. instead, they ruled that the beating was an intentional disregard for human life. love's mother and sister from cockeysville, moved many to tears when they testified during sentencing. lexy said, quote, i never wanted something so bad in my life, that i have to

seeiardly's face again. -- see yeardley's face again. >> there are no winners in this case. our hearts go out to the love family. they have suffered enormously. >> reporter: after the verdict, huguely's family also grieved. huguely's attorney spoke on their client's behalf. >> he's hopeful. he's spiritual. and he -- and we look forward to some corrections. >> reporter: even though the trial is over, uva students say love's death will be a sad chapter in their school's history forever. >> she'll obviously say, like in everyone's memory. but i think the school, like, can move on, from, like, the tragedy, hopefully. >> reporter: a judge still has to reaffirm the jury's recommendation of a 26-year prison sentence. formal sentencing is coming up in april. adam may, wjz eyewitness news. >> and the jury of seven men

and five women considered testimony from nearly 60 witnesses over nine days. right now, the maryland same-sex marriage debate is resuming in the state senate. mike hellgren is live with the next step on the controversial legislation. mike? >> reporter: kai, we could know at the end of the day, if the senate passes the bill. senate president mike miller said they should be returning just about now to finish up their debate on the proposal. and governor o'malley is promising to sign the bill into law right away. right now, same-sex couples can legally marry in six states and washington, d.c. >> wjz has a crew in annapolis. and when there is a vote, we'll bring it to you right away. slugging it out. mitt romney and rick santorum are fighting to win the states with the upcoming primaries. tara mergener reports from the white house with more from the campaign trail. mitt romney hit the campaign trail in arizona, ready to hit his chief rival's

record. speaking to a group of builders and contractors, romney slammed rick santorum's votes as senator. >> he voted to fund planned parenthood, even though that was against his principles. he voted for no child left behind, even though that was against his principles. >> reporter: romney is trying to take back the lead. a new poll shows romney and santorum virtually tied. santorum has launched a new tv ad in romney's home state. it attempts to show that the governor is not a true conservative. >> reporter: santorum is trying to raise money at fundraisers. all four gop candidates went to different parts of the country after squaring off in what could be their final debate. >> governor romney voted to raise taxes and fees. >> during your term in congress. the years you have been there, the government has doubled in size. >> reporter: newt gingrich is essentially skipping the round.

president obama has set his sights on a southern state, too. he visited florida thursday. the state will be a crucial battleground this fall. at the white house, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> well, the president is sounding confident about his chances in november. in an interview today, president obama says he has five more years to accomplish some of his other goals, like immigration reform. our unseasonably warm weather gets kicked up a notch today. wjz found them warming up without jackets at lake montebello. outside right now, it's mild, breezy and sunny, with just a few clouds in the sky. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob turk has the updated numbers. up today just a notch. 1 degree higher than it was yesterday. take a look at temperatures around the state. we're in the 60s most places.

a propane tank explodes near washington state, injuring 5. it was being loaded onto the construction site in edmonds when it blew up this afternoon. five people were rushed to the hospital with injuries. no word yet on what caused the explosion. police are looking for the men who robbed a tucson mcdonald's in broad daylight. surveillance tape shows two armed gunman, hitting the store manager and forcing her to get away. police think the robbery may be related to other crimes in that area. cleanup efforts are under way now after strong winds whipped through georgia. the storm caused significant damage near atlanta. the heavy winds toppled trees onto a number of homes and businesses, leaving many in the dark. authorities say one woman died of a heart attack as that storm was coming through. six months ago today, did you feel it, was one of the most asked questions of

maryland like much of the east coast. the state was rattled by the biggest earthquake in memory. now, a major baltimore landmark, left damaged and condemned, has reopened. >> st. patrick's church took a hard hit last august 23rd. a 5.3 earthquake sent plunging. fortunately, nobody on the ground was hurt. but the building was condemned by building inspectors. >> look up to the right there, there's a crack. >> reporter: six months later, it was repaired. >> if they were to come loose and fall, it would go through the roof of the church. >> reporter: and just in time for ash wednesday, the church was safe enough to reopen. ♪ [ music ] a congregation that is almost exclusively hispanic, had its church back. >> in is the closest to everybody. i'm so proud. so happy for my people. >> reporter: father wotech conducted mass, keeping a

let's go to new york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. there's another sign that the job market is improving. the number of people applying for first-time, unemployment benefits was unchanged last week. and in more encouraging news, the number of americans receiving benefits for at least four weeks fell to a four-year low. mortgage rates increased. up from last week's perfect rate of 3.87%. so far, they have done little to help the housing market. sears is selling some stores after reporting its biggest quarterly loss in nearly a decade. the struggling owner of k-mart, sears and lands end will spin off of stores and try to become profitable again. shares will spike 20% on the news. some of sears' rivals are reporting disappointing

chance of getting very strong winds. here, east of the mountains, windy tomorrow, it will be warm, initially. then it's going to get colder later. 64, columbia, baltimore. and 65 in annapolis and kent island. 60 up at westminster. right now, the winds anywhere from 10 to 15 to 20 miles an hour. but they're coming a lot stronger. look how warm it is to the southwest of us. memphis is 79 degrees. now, that warm air will continue to move through the ohio valley tonight and tomorrow. detroit at 40. 37, 37. not super cold. but it's cold enough up here, we'll probably see some snow. denver down to 31. getting snow in the 70s in the southwest. this warm air will move into our region tonight into tomorrow. and then a cold front comes through the area. that's when it gets very windy tomorrow afternoon. and maybe a risk of a shower or thundershowers. cooperate moves through. not a whole lot of rain with it right now. most of it to the northwest of it. the main energy will be passing to the north. maybe a shower or two tonight. although i'm not that impressed. then a risk of a shower or

elementary school in bremerton, washington, is in critical condition after being shot in the abdomen. police say her 9-year-old classmate brought a gun to school in his backpack. and it somehow went off. now, investigators are trying to figure out how the boy got the gun and why he brought it to school. >> conduct an investigation and see what they had to do. >> reporter: the boy was booked into a juvenile detention center and could face numerous charges, including third-degree assault. the school is open today. and crisis counselors are available to talk to students after a terrifying afternoon. >> we heard a boom. and then the person came on and yelled, lock down, three times. >> reporter: 8-year-old aminna coserbon is in the hospital. her family gave a thumbs up, after her surgery, wednesday night. manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news. >> the bremerton school board says it will review safety procedures after seeing the result of the police investigation. dozens of students and

alumni file a lawsuit over a pepper-spraying incident. kai has more on this. >> reporter: the group wants to know why the students were pepper-sprayed. and are calling on better policies to prevent this from happening again. the november demonstration became a rallying image for the occupy movement, after a video showed uc davis officers pepper spraying the stinging alcohol cal into the eyes of students at close range. officers said later, they had felt surrounded and threatened by protestors. the suit seeks unspecified damages and an injunction against the use of excessive forces. >> reporter: uc davis officials declined to comment because they have not seen the lawsuit. an army private defers his league. private bradley manning also chose to defer whether to be tried by a military jury or a judge at his fort meade arraignment today.

he gave wikileaks more than 730,000 documents and video clips. a trial date has not yet been set. world leaders hold an international conference on syria. no one expects the meeting will end the bloodshed there. but as they report, they hope to agree on a plan to bolster opposition forces. >> reporter: the obama administration up until now, has firmly rejected calls to arm the syrian opposition. but spokesman jay carney today opened the door to the possibility. >> if pressure on assad does not work, are we considering arming the opposition? >> i want to be clear that our position is that it is not appropriate now to contribute to the militarization, the further mill militarization of syria. we don't rule out additional measures if the international community waits too long and doesn't act decisively. >> reporter: just last year, the u.s. supported a nato intervention in libya. when we asked why that action is not a model for syria, carne

said u.s. policy is not one size fits all. >> why would we intervene on behalf of the rebels in libya and not help those in syria? >> in libya, as you recall, there was support at the international level, broad support of the unighted nations security council resolution. there was a request from the libyan opposition and libyan people, for direct military intervention. >> reporter: and at the top of the agenda of that very important friends of syria meeting is establishing a cease- fire so they can get in some badly-needed humanitarian aid. they're also going to talk about safe havens for civilians. and they're going to try to organize a very fractured syrian opposition forces. noria o'donnell, cbs news, the white house. >> activists say more than 70 people died yesterday during bombings in homes and other rebel strongholds. well, the captain of the sunken costa concordia cruise liner is in charge.

mary has more on the captain's mounting charges. >> reporter: captain francesco schettino was charged with failing to describe to maritime authorities the scope of the disaster. the captain already faces charges of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship before all passengers were evacuated. the giant luxury ship hit rocks off the italian coast of giglio last month. he is under surveillance. >> just today, divers discovered an 8th body aboard the wreck. a parkville man is being investigated by police investigators. derek propalis was pulled over. that's when the officer noticed propalis was wearing a virginia state uniform. his car also had a spotlight laptop and siren. after an investigation, it was determined propalis was not a state trooper. he is currently on home detention. a former washington, d.c. police commander said he he

new surveillance video has been released of a train crash in argentinaa. watch this. you can see the train bursting into flames after slamming into a barrier. the impact caused the second car to impale the first car. a total of 15 were killed. more than 500.

officials suspect faulty brakes were to blame for the crash. another accident. this happens as a reporter is live on the air. take a look. >> reporter: when oil and gas prices go up, flight costs go up, too. so we could see fewer people driving. >> the reporter was wrapping up her report and she didn't even flinch. no one was hurt. a houston community is coming together to memorialize susan powell. >> they are raising money to create a bronze statue of powell and her boys. charlie and braden. susan went missing in 2009. many believed her husband, josh powell is responsible. earlier this month, powell killed himself and their two sons when he blew up their home. if all goes as planned, this

will be part of a memorial dedicated on her birthday. shots ring out, outside of a connecticut hospital. we have more on what sparked the violence. >> reporter: s.w.a.t. teams converge on the hospital for special care, after police say a maintenance worker, 65- year-old victor fired off shots at the supervisor. >> it's a very industrial area. it's certainly not an area where there would be any patient care or any type of medical activity going on there at all. >> reporter: the victims, supervisors lynn traffic and robert berucci are now in serious but stable condition, after being rushed to st. frances. meanwhile, the hospital for

special care went into lockdown. s.w.a.t. teams and several local police forces responding, with guns out, making sure the shooter wasn't still roaming the hospital. for hours, no one was allowed in or out. and with no mobile service in the hospital, it left those on the outside, on pins and needles, wondering if their loved ones were okay. it could be a family member, or friend. this area is not too big. so it could be someone you know. >> reporter: he was apparently upset with his supervisors over a disciplinary issue. he was arrested at his home and charged with first-degree assault. oil giant bp could be pumping up billions of dollars. after a judge finds them responsible. the judge found they violated the government's clean water act. they could be fined a penalty of more than $4 billion. the 2010 gulf oil spill is the

coalition of internet giants have agreed to add a do-not- track button on their web browsers. web providers will still track you but will not send you information to customize their ads. the american civil liberties union says it is a start. >> now they have to take the next step and make it meaningful, by do not track, means you actually won't be tracked. >> reporter: web providers will still collect information about your narcoticking habits and provide research and development. >> it doesn't make me more comfortabla the -- comfortable at all. >> reporter: microsoft followed. google resisted. but the search engine now says it will if the the industry agreement. they have nine months to build do not track buttons into their browsers. nine months to find other ways to appease advertisers. >> ultimately, the aclu wants providers to provide a true do

65, 65. just very pleasant conditions around the entire area. by the water, it is cooler. but right now, rock hall at 64. kent island, annapolis. and d.c. still at 65 degrees. that was their official high today. now, the average high is 47. okay. keep that in mind. 48 was the morning low at the airport. now, there were some upper 30s in some of the colder neighborhoods. but the airport, 48, which is higher than the average high. 78 degrees. the record high today in 1874. and in 1963, the second day in a row. 5 above zero. right now, winds anywhere from 5 to 15 miles an hour. tomorrow, they'll be between 20 and 30, with higher gusts, maybe 40. even some places will see a wind gust to 15 miles an hour. tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night. a very strong area of low pressure will pass to the north. it will drag to the frontal system tomorrow afternoon. may kick up a shower or thundershower tomorrow. it's going to be warm.
