him. insight from one juror they're confident they made the right decision. >> after listening to both sides, he feels at peace with the verdict he helped render. >> i was completely -- like, you couldn't open it at all. >> he described the picture of her battered face. the worst part was seeing the autopsy photo. >> i see what's going to be there. i never knew yearly love, but i got to know her best friends, her family, i got to see parts of her life in photographs. >> love, who grew up in baltimore county, grand larceny. >> we all did not think it was premeditated. we don't think he went over there with the purpose of

killing yardly love. i feel for him. it must be painful, but there's responsibility for what happened. and i wish it didn't happen. >> the jury recommends he spend 26 years behind bars. >> when we came out with our verdict, we'll find -- we're not afraid to look at george and look at him, and i think that's because i was confident that what we did was right. >> in recommending a sentence, jurors did believe george hughly would be a threat to society in the future because of his excessive drinking. back to you. >> thank you. do not contact the love family or hughly himself. several firefighters heard

on the job. something went wrong and seven members of the department suffered injuries, most of them serious. you can see a huge number of emergency vehicles on that strait. we'll bring you more information on this developing story as we get it. the nightmare unfolded just days ago. a case of road rage that included a bloody stabbing, a crash, and a frightening brawl. now the man who is stabbed is facing charging and a story to eyewitness news. michael has the exclusive. >> reporter: the frightening road rage attack stunned those who watched it on the highway. that stabbing was a local football coach, jeffrey. police just released this picture of him. his new wife watched everything

unfold at exclusively told wjz about the terrifying experience. she asked us not to show her face. >> i did not expect anything like this to happen on my wedding day. the road rage issue, you've got to be careful. >> reporter: she'd gotten married just hours before and at a stoplight where a man became irritated and cops say violent. investigators believe he was upset they got out and switched seats. >> just all the laughter taking place in that truck to have it turn so fast, so quickly, and see so much rage at the time is an adrenaline thing. >> reporter: on the advice of her lawyer, she go into detail on the exact events, but he stabbed her husband and the two men started fighting.

initially did not charge but after consulting with witnesses and the state's attorney, they arrested him for first and second degree assault. the arrest surprised and devastated her. she has this statement from her husband. we will get through this. pray for him and the family. >> reporter: she said her children watched the attack happen and still living in fear. >> do you know what it's like that your children's heads won't be the same because of what they saw. >> reporter: police say the investigation is far from closed. >> be happy. be joyful. you're here. tomorrow, you could be gone. everything could happen in a split second. >> reporter: and change lives forever. wjz eyewitness news. >> he turned himself into police last night.

causes chaos at a mall. huge crowds stormed this morning to get their hands on the new nike sneakers. each pair costs $220. the store called off the sale because it was so intense. police are trying to prevent a similar situation in baltimore. the shoes go on sale tomorrow. we found more than a dozen police cars tonight to make sure things stay calm. storms blow through parts of the maryland today leaving behind a big mess. there's damage in cambridge. there are no reports of injuries. it's known as the storms stick around for the weekend in the first weather forecast. an alarming smell in harper county, as many people living there worry about the 9-1-1 calls come in about natural

gas. meghan mccorkell has the source of the smell. >> reporter: it's hard to believe, but it came from two states away, but it was strong enough to have dozens of people calling for help right here in maryland. something strange in the air in harper county. >> i smelled it in my backyard. if you had a pond and water. >> i smelled it what i thought was natural gas. >> reporter: that foul odor frightening for some. >> somebody can light a match or lighter. makes you nervous. >> reporter: nearly 40 9-1-1 calls came from all over the county. >> it was one right after the other. i think first went around 5:30 and until 8:30. >> reporter: with the cause still unknown, there's an emergency operation, finally the source discovered in new jersey. a broken pipe at an oil

refinery caused a spill and the smell travelerred. so health officials say it's not dangerous. air importanting monitoring should indicate it's safe. >> there's no real strong concentration in any one area. >> reporter: a robo-call was sent to calm residents. >> "at this time, there's no gas leak source in harper county." >> reporter: harper county now breathing easier with the mystery solved. the officials say the leak has been cleared up. reporting live, meghan mccorkell, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you, meghan. they were also reported in cecil county and delaware. two u.s. senators recently met with castro. they're trying to convince cast toe to release allen gross.

he's been bringing equipment to the community. they don't expect gross to be released anytime soon. a shake-up at the top of a maryland university. the president of umuc is removed and school officials won't say why. adam may goes looking for answers. >> welcome to the university of maryland, university college. >> reporter: susan is considered a national leader in higher education. since 2006, she's been president at umuc. the school is claimed to be the fastest growing virtual campus. >> we have 94,000 students. >> reporter: given that success, a statement from the university shocked higher education circles. a spokesman writes that susan wald ridge will be leave for an
