details on how he was killed but tonight they're remembering the life of who they call a hero. aaron and his sister are morning the loss of their father, 48 year old major. he was serving in afghanistan where the burning of the koran has led to outrage. the military has yet to confirm that the major was one of them. >> we don't know anything about what happened. >> reporter: they're aware of the violence in afghanistan but choosing to remember how the father of four lived and how he chose to love his wife. >> it was like a love story right out of book. >> take care of mom. take care of my sweetheart if

anything ever happens to me. >> reporter: he left a mark on more than his own family. for years he worked as a phys. ed teacher. >> my father has been my idol and been my hero and i grew up trying to be just like him and i hope and pray that i can be even 50% of what that man was. >> if more fathers could be like he was, i feel like this could be a better place. >> reporter: in the past the major had done one tour of duty. this was his first tour of duty in afghanistan. >> sad loss there. derek live for us tonight. a spokesman sighs despite the contentions it will continue to stand by the afghan partners

and and -- investigators see a sudden blast of wind created a fire ball inside this riverdale home injuring seven firefighters. they're recalling the moments after getting getting the call that every parent dreads. >> under neither it all we're all one big family. even though some of us are strangers, we're all the same. >> the three firefighters are being treated. they're still trying to figure out how it began. >> police say a man walked in on a burglary and then was shot. >> reporter: news of what happened inside this home spread quickly among neighbors. >> it's my worst nightmare. >> reporter: police say at 1:30 in the morning the man who

lives at this house returned home to find a burglar inside. he shot the crook and took off running. police found the suspect a few blocks away dressed in camouflage from head to toe. >> it's surprising to hear about something like that. >> reporter: the crime has those who live in the neighborhood on heightened alert. many here already try to deter burglars. >> i'm always trying to make sure the windows and doors are locked. >> it's shocking. my father lived here for many years and this is the first time i've heard of a violent situation like this. >> the residence has been released from the hospital and the suspect has not been released. family and friends are remembering a john hopkins student that was killed last year. he was hit by an 83 year old

woman while riding his bike on campus in february. he was declared brain dead and died a few months later. tonight his family is fighting against a bill that renews drivers license for eight years instead of five. >> this shouldn't happen to another family. this was a situation where we feel a driver was not really competent to drive. >> earlier today nathan's friends held a memorial bike ride in honor of him. it's down to the wire with just two days before the michigan primary. mitt romney and santorum are having a two man show down. >> this church is filled with music and praise.

for these christians, their faith has a heavy influence on their politics. jennifer is following the race closely. rick santorum is her candidate. >> he stands for family values. >> reporter: santorums appeal to evangelical voters helps push him to the top of the poles in michigan. mitt romney who was once the favorite in his home state is now finding it hard to connect with the voters. charles says he can't identify with romney and admires santorums issues on conservative issues. romney says he has little time to make up a lot of ground here in michigan but expects to come away with a victory. he shrugged off criticism. >> people have come and gone and i've got more votes than

it's 36 degrees and crystal clear. we'll have the complete forecast coming up. three people dead after this train derailed. all six cars derailed as the train was headed to toronto. two train engineers and an engineer trainee were killed. 45 people were sent to hospitals. the train took a diverging track. a pretty strong earthquake

rattles taiwan. people fleeing were captured on video when the quake hit. so far, no reports of any serious injuries. it lies on a stretch of the pacific basin. an 86 year old world war two veteran is attacked at a gas station and it's caught on camera. nobody stops to help him. you can see it happening right there in progress while aaron says he doesn't remember being hit but he does remember feeling his broken leg. you can see after the attack that he has to crawl sawway on his own. he gets into the store and all these people just keep walking right by him. >> i was wondering if they saw me crawling. they knew something was wrong. people don't want to get involved in anything now days.

>> that's sad. he did eventually make it inside the store without any help there. they're still looking for the suspect tonight. we have new details this evening about an incident involving the youngest son of robert kennedy. he's facing misdemeanor charges after getting into a fight with two nurses. he was trying to take his newborn son outside for a walk and the nurses said he got physical with them and the became byes head moved back -- baby's head moved back and forth. the lawyer is denying that and says the baby slept the whole time. >> maryland's same sex marriage bill has passed two major

hurdles, the house and senate. the battle to get the issue in front of voters is already under way. many members are against the same sex marriage bill. they believe that only traditional unions should be called marriage and they fear most voters don't see it that way. >> in today's world they'll probably go the other way. >> at the church in baltimore the service is about to start. most of the members here support the bill like long time partners kathleen and julie. they separated when it passed but know the fight isn't over. >> i have so much faith that

to the north of us and draw all the warm air our way. take a look at this front here. it's producing a lot of snow into the upper midwest and make its way into new england. you notice a separate round of rain over florida and possibly problems tomorrow for the daytona 500. for us and between all that we're going to see sun shine mixed in with a few clouds. the front knocks us down on tuesday but we're still in the 50s. another front is going to come our way. it's going to take through thursday to get out of here. to bring the clouds in tuesday night and wednesday and the rain may linger into thursday morning. we're still in the 50s. out in the waters, small advisory goes into effect tomorrow and it's going to be a warm wind.
