this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, february 27, 2012. good morning everybody. so good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. we begin in afghanistan this morning. early today a suicide bomber killed at least nine people in eastern afghanistan. it's the latest in the escalating furor over the burning of islamic holy books. duarte geraldino in washington. good morning. >> good morning terrell. the explosion took place at an airport. while there's no official indication that is connected to the deadly riots, the taliban has claimed responsibility. that complicates efforts in the country. a car bomb exploded outside the airport early monday. afghan police say it killed several people, including two airport guards and a soldier. the taliban claimed responsibility and said it was revenge fort burning of quran. a week ago. >> it follows days of deadly riots across the country. angry afghans have been marching

through the streets and clashing with police over the handling of the muslim holy book. u.s. officials say the burning was an accident. >> we deeply regret the incident that has led to these protests. we are condemning it in the strongest possible terms. >> the united states launched a full investigation. commanders say it cannot derail the progress that's been made since u.s. forces invaded afghanistan in 2001. u.s. forces are working side by side with troops as they prepare to take control of the country next year. >> this is not the time to decide we're done here. we've got to redouble our efforts, we've got to create a situation in which al qaeda is not coming back. >> but nato pulled all foreign advisers from afghan ministries in kabul. it was a precautionary measure after two military officers were shot inside a secure government building over the weekend. afghan police have identified the shooter and there's a manhunt under way.

since the quran burnings came to light last week, more than 30 people have been killed in riots and protests. protests and riots including four u.s. soldiers. terrell? >> in washington for us. duarte geraldino, thank you. the compound where osama bin laden lived in pakistan has been destroyed. pakistani officials began tearing down the compound on saturday and finished this morning. bin laden lived there for years. close to a pakistani army base. u.s. commandos raided the base may 2nd and shot bin laden to death. the remains of the last american soldier who was missing in iraq have been identified. staff sergeant ahmed -- was kidnapped in october o of 2006 when he sneaked off base to visit his wife in baghdad. the army has no further details surrounding his death. to syria. anti-government activists say syrian troops are bombarding the city of homs with rockets and artillery this morning. human rights groups say 59 people were killed yesterday as syrians voted on a new constitution.

the u.s. and other western nations call the vote a sham. the u.s. and some 60 other nations tried to come up with a strategy to push assad from power. >> secretary of state hillary clinton who characterized the vote as a cynical ploy talked to wyatt andrews about the situation in syria during a stop in morocco. >> with the violence continuing in syria and assad refusing to allow medicine to reach the injured, secretary of state hillary clinton in an interview with cbs news, argues the united states is doing what it can but within limits. >> i am incredibly sympathetic to the calls of somebody do something. but it is also important to stop and ask what that is and who is going to do it. >> what to do about assad was supposed to be answered last friday when a global conference called friends of syria again demanded that assad step aside. several arab countries, starting

with the saudis argued for -- action to arm the resistance. the obama administration is resisting that. >> the u.s. repeatedly said it's reluctant to support the direct arming of the dissidents. why? >> first of all, we really don't know who it is that would be armed. >> specifically, the administration fears that arms will wind up in the hands of terrorists, including al qaeda. >> we know al qaeda, is supporting the opposition in syria. are we supporting al qaeda in syria? hamas is now supporting the opposition. are we supporting hamas in syria? i think wyatt, despite the great pleas that we hear from those people who are being ruthlessly assaulted by assad, if you're a military planner or if you're a secretary of state and you're trying to figure out do you have the elements of an opposition that is actually viable, we don't see that.

three employees were killed and dozens of passengers were injured. politics this morning. two republican primaries tomorrow. michigan and arizona. mitt romney is expected to easily win in arizona. he's been endorsed by governor jan brewer. in romney's home state of michigan, rick santorum's conservative stand on social issues has gained traction. a santorum win tomorrow would up end the race of the gop nomination. danielle nottingham has our report. >> mitt romney is making his closing pitch to conservatives in his home state of michigan. >> if you want somebody who will dramatically and fundamentally change washington and bring us more jobs and less debt and smaller government, then i'm your guy. >> the former massachusetts governor won this state four years ago, but there's no doubt he's in a tough fight this time around. rick santorum is breathing down romney's neck and keeping up his attacks. santorum told voters in marquette that romney is not conservative enough for republicans. >> we need somebody who can be a stark contrast, give people a different vision for america

about who we are. >> santorum's appeal to evangelical voters has helped push him to the top of the polls here in michigan. he's hoping their support will shake up this race. at cedar street church in holt michigan, faith has a heavy influence on church-goers politics. they're following the republican presidential race closely. many parishioners say they'll be voting for rick santorum because of his stance on social issues. >> he stands for family values, which is very important to our family. >> mitt romney has a flipflopping record. >> even though romney has struggled to connect with some conservatives here, he says he expects to come away with a victory tuesday. both candidates will crisscross the state in the closing hours of a primary that could be a turning point in the race. danielle nottingham, cbs news, lansing, michigan. this morning the website wikileaks has begun releasing what it says are more than five

realtors releases the index for january. the markets finished in positive territory. for the week. the dow gained 33 point and is within sight of 13,000, while the nasdaq added 11. there is concern that rising gas prices could slow down the economic recovery. according to aaa, the average cost of a gallon of regular nationwide is now $3.68. compare that to just a month ago when the price was 30 cents cheaper. the federal trial to decide who should pay for the gulf oil spill has been delayed by a week. the judge is allowing bp to work out a settlement with the thousands of businesses and individuals harmed by the disaster. according to a bloomberg report, the settlement could total $14 billion. and more and more americans are getting serious about their online privacy.

let's get another look at this morning's top stories. a suicide car bomber struck at the gates of an airport in eastern afghanistan. nine people were killed. taliban says the attack was revenge for the burning of islamic holy books on a nato base last week. it sparked violence across afghanistan. "the artist" won five academy awards. including best ak picture. the first time a silent film won the highest honor in 83 years. police in southern california are awaiting the results of an autopsy on an 11-year-old girl who died after fighting with another girl. friends of the victim gathered over the weekend at an impromptu memorial. they spoke about the fight which happened after school on friday. >> they were fighting just for a boy. just for a boy. >> what do you think about that? it's stupid.

>> investigators say several students witnessed the pre-planned fight that happened in an alley near the long beach school. both fifth graders attended. no weapons were used and the fight lasted about a minute. joanna ramos reported headaches and was taken to a hospital where she died. a group of tourists who took a nature hike in mexico got more adventure than they bargained for. it happened on a jungle tour near puerto vallarta. 22 tourists were passengers on the carnival splendor cruise ship they were returning to their bus after a hike when an armed man appeared. one hiker even took a picture. >> he had his gun brandished up here and then he brought it down and pulled up his shirt to show the knife. in spanish, our guide interpreted that throw everything on the ground and the next thing we heard was somebody said run. everybody started to run. >> wouldn't have had to tell me to run. they ran. all 22 made it back to the ship. but some lost some cash, cameras and passports to the robber.
