now it is complete coverage, it is wjz maryland's news station. >> a school shooting. someone opens fire at a high school cafeteria in ohio. >> the latest on the victims, the suspect and the motive. >> good afternoon, i aim don scott. >> i am jessica kartalija. >> we begin with breaking news in the northeast where several students were shot in their school cafeteria. >> reporter: students file out of the high school and worried plants gather to pick up their children. one mother said her daughter witnessed the shooting and it happened in the school cafeteria before the start of school period. another student said a boy stood up and started shooting and then it was chaos. the exact number of injured is not confirmed but they believe 5 students were shot, four boys and a girl, a brave teacher may

have saved lives by rubbing the shooter out of the school. >> the first team of officers had run come, it was determined he had run from the building chased by a teacher. police caught him in the street and officers continued to search for more though they believe it was just one shooter. as students evacuated they went to the elementary school across the street where they waited for parents to arrive. all schools in the area are on lock-down and pot the fbi and swat teams are on the scene, about 1100 students go to the high school. parents describe it as a close knit community, a place where everybody knows each other and no one would expect such a flare-up of violence. alexis christoforous, wjz eyewitness news. >> stay with wjz for the latest on this still developing story at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00. >> s back here a local family is morning the loss of a national guards man killed

during the violence in afghanistan. derek valcourt speaks to the family. >> reporter: they do not have many details but they know his body is scheduled to be flown in to dover airforce base around 5:00. >> he was the best soldier you could have been. >> he and his sister are mourning the loss of their father, major robert marchanti, the army national guards man was serving in kabul, afghanistan, where outrage of the burn of the koran has lead to violent demonstrations. saturday two soldiers, a lieutenant colonel and a major shot inside what was supposed to be one of the most secure areas of a building but the military has yet to confirm that major marchanti was one of them. >> we don't know anything about what happened. >> his family aware of the ongoing violence in afghanistan but choosing to remember how the father of 4 lived and especially how he loved his wife. >> he always said take car of mommy. >> take care of mom.

them. good afternoon, ron. >> reporter: good afternoon, don, it started friday night as the two men were fighting a fire. kevin o'toole and his partner were injuried. parents of the firefighters recall the painful moments after hearing but the accident. >> underneath it all we are all 1 big family and although some of us are strangers we are all the same. >> reporter: o'toole sustained burns over 40% of his body, and is scheduled to undergo a skin craft today. surel is scheduled for tests to determine the extent of burns to his wareway. a irway. both are treated at the hospital. back to you. >> there is no word on how it started. >> a state mental patient goes on trial for the murder of

another patient. he is accused of strangling her in 2010. he was ruled competent to stand trial and faces one count of first degree murder. an accused burglar will go before a judge today after he is charged with shooting a towson homeowner. police say bradford holeup broke into a home on the 500 block of allegheny avenue early sunday morning. the homeowner came home and found holeup, who then shot him. the homeowner is expected to be okay. he is chargedy attempted murder, assault and burglary. >> today maryland is joining other states in applying for a no child left behind waiver. they will be measured by not just how all students perform but how specific groups do. currently the no child statute has extremely rigid across the board requirements. the recent scandal at st. joseph medical center has led to the hospital being up for sale. according to our media partner the institution could be bought by a hospital system that does

it is. i have not been out of the building since 4:45 this morning, wow, feels like an early spring day. well that is going to change in 24 hours. we are going to see between a high and an area of low pressure with a clockwise and counterclockwise rotation, not unlike a mix master you would use to cook with. we are going to see air being funneled out of the north. look what happens by midweek and the end of the week. we will lose that high. we are going to lose that low. lose the mix master effect and watch the jet stream again lift north of the region. that means as we start march it is going to get mild again. well, how much so? is there going to be some rain along with these milder midweek conditions? meteorologist bernadette woods will have those details coming up shortly. now we throw it back inside. >> it may be a while before anyone hits the track for the daytona 500. the first race has been pushed back to tonight. for the first time in the race's 54 history the race had to be re-scheduled due to bad

more now on our breaking news out of ohio, we are learning one of the students shot this morning has died. a total of five were shot at sharden high schools cafeteria this morning. police do have a suspect in custody. there is no word on the conditions of the other students injured as of this time. wjz of course will continue to follow this breaking news story at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00. >> international authorities thwart a plot to assassinate president putin in russia. they were arrested in ukraine's black seaport of odessa. nelson mandell is a resting at home this noon after

surgery. the 93-year-old was released from the hospital. south africa's first black president has been in the hospital for prostate cancer and had operations on his knees and eyes. >> the gop presidential hopefuls are campaigning in michigan today ahead of the primary there tomorrow. mitt romney and rick santorum are in a tight race where romney grew up and his father was a popular governor. ron paul will also be campaigning there. newt gingrich is focusing on the other states that have their primaries in the first super tuesday of the campaign. an amazing sight you will want to watch out. a boat getting a front seat to a dolphin stampede. experts say it is probably something they heard. it appears at least a thousand of them rt were part of it. >> that is north just of where i grew up. >> data point.

now the weather, complete forecast and the first warning of severe weather. >> welcome back, everybody. just a gorgeous shot. that sun all wall to wall. that is all we have got going on right now. and overall it is going to be a beautiful afternoon because along with the sunshine we have warm air in place. 55 degrees right now in baltimore. 56 there. we are going up. we have seen a couple of 40s along the water here in annapolis and kent island. the bay temperatures are still in the 40s but the southwest wind is bringing in warm air. we will open end it in once again and here is arctic air but our air is coming from this direction, where we see 65 in memphis, 61 in dallas and that is what is moving our way. so we have got a front passing by north of us today. there is not a whole lot to it. it did bring snow to the upper midwest and will bring snow to new england but on our side of it some clouds and look showers

down to the south but that looks to be about it that. front gets out of here. behind it it will cool us down but we are still above average tomorrow afternoon. the next front starts to move our way. this one is different. a lot more moisture associated with this one, from the southwest, clouds will come in tuesday night. by wednesday we are going to see rain and this one is going to take through thursday morning before it gets out of here so on and off rounds of rain wednesday into early thursday. overall, though, temperatures still not all that bad. so the forecast looks like this. for today we have got sunshine out there, up to 62 degrees. and then tonight we go down into the 30s, a pretty quiet night. tomorrow sunshine starts to picks with clouds as that next front approaches us. stuck at 50 degrees so cooler but our averages are still in the 40s. they are climbing but still in the 40s, so our cool down is 50 degrees, we are probably going to get stuck in the 40s but when that rain goes out of here we are going back up for the end of the week believe it or
