he's one of two men killed inside a secure building in afghanistan. derek valcourt is there and has reaction from those who knew the fallen hero, derek. >> reporter: that soldiers remains are returning to the u.s. tonight on a flight scheduled to arrive any moment to the dover air force base in delaware it is a heartbreaking moment. military officials say this weekend one of those afghan police officials assassinated mark shobel and others. >> my dad was he was a good man. >> the news devastating to mark shante's wife and children. >> he said take care of my sweetheart no matter what happens to me so that's what

we're going to do. >> reporter: marshanti spent years as a phys-ed teacher for several baltimore schools. thousands of condolence poured from students he thought for years. >> he was the kind of person who came into the room and just calmed it down. >> when he got his job with the army he said he had two passions in life one was working with kids and the other was being a soldier and he was so fortunate he got to do both. >> he was a gentle giant, he was nonopposing. >> reporter: he was the tenth baltimorian to lose his life. his killer still at large. police say they know who he is and they are conducting a

search to find him. >> derek, thank you. since marchanti's murder, they've been patrolling all administrative buildings. news from outside cleveland. one student is dead four others injured. and police say their classmate is responsible. manuel gallegus is reporting from chadon ohio. >> reporter: parents cried and hugged their children as a student opened fire. one student is dead and four others injured. >> we feel so disheartened. >> reporter: a teacher may have saved lives by running after the suspect. >> one of the teachers happened to chase the shooting suspect out of the building, immediately at that point our officers entered the building, went to the five injured students that were injured, and got ems right there in the door right behind him. >> reporter: police say there

was just one shooter and he turned himself in. students said there was chaos with people screaming and running down the hall. 1,100 students are enrolled at chardon high school. parents describe it as a tight nit community where everybody knows each other. teachers ushered the students out of the building and into the elementary school across the street. parents lined up outside to collect their kids. >> i hope every parent if you haven't hugged or kissed your kid in the last couple of days to take that time. >> reporter: officials say the victims are four boys and a girl. one witness said he recognized the shooter as an outcast who might have been bullied. since he's a juvenile, police have not identified the suspect. but they say they have his handgun and they're run ago background check to trace where he got it. manuel gallegus. >> the school is planning a candlelight vigil tomorrow night and is making grief

counselors available to both opportunities and teachers. police are searching for a man who sexually assaulted a student at the university of maryland. denise is in the newsroom with details of the attack. >> campus police say a female student woke up to find a man touching her leg inside her college dorm room. this happened inside cumberland hall. over the weekend a student was also beaten and sexually assaulted. but police do not believe the incidents are connected, kai. >> police are stepping up patrol at both campuses. >> new details tonight on a case that has shaken hardon county. a 16-year-old who is accused of killing his father. mike hellgren has the latest. >> reporter: the court vacated

his arrangement which was scheduled for this afternoon. his attorney did enter an appearance and we're learning more on how the case will progress. >> reporter: what will happen as robert richardson the third the teenager who shot his father to death last month and who's case is divided and shaken as close nit community in hartford county. the a question that weighs in the heads of loved ones as they just revealed in a recent wjz investigation. >> it just hit me right here. right here in the center of my heart that the boy snapped. >> reporter: investigators describe a grizzly crime scene, pools of blood throughout the family's home in bell air. some friends and family members believe richardson a high school student was abused although prosecutors have yet to reveal a motive. dozens of supporters launched a facebook page collecting donations for his defense. they've now raised enough money to hire a private lawyer for him. >> he's aware of us. he is not an adult by any

means. going to this preliminary hearing, seeing his face he's just a baby, he's a boy. >> reporter: richardson has admitted to him -- while loved ones wait and worry whether this teenager has any chance at freedom. >> i know that there were so many signs that something was wrong in that house, and too many people looked the other way. >> richardson is charged with first and second degree murder and a firearm charge. he is being held on no bail. reporting live, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. mike, thank you. authorities found the body of richardson's father in a pond a few miles from where he was killed. violence in the parking lot

at arundel mills mall. collins is accused of trying to run over police officer outside of the mall. they were trying to speak to collins about his possible involvement in a crime. the battle over the tax increases. and right now the mayor is introducing the proposal at city hall. monique griego reports, the opposition is banding together. >> we urge city council to find a better way to do this. >> reporter: union workers and local businesses banded together to show their opposition to the proposed battle tax increase. >> it's going to cost jobs. it's going to cost family money and this is the wrong direction for people to take. >> we struggle every day to keep things going. >> reporter: sandy berry owns right bike supermarket. she says the tax cut her sales

by 5% and she fears increasing city taxes will send more customers to the county. >> we're going to lose not only the beverage sales but the rest of everybody's shopping basket. that's huge for us. >> reporter: the debate has opinion ranging for several months now and those who support it are just that passionate. >> i feel very comfortable moving forward that this is something we can use to help change the landscape when it comes to the fiscal needs, the physical needs for our schools. >> reporter: the mayor estimate it is tax hike will bring in $10 million a year and increase the city's contribution to construction by 140%. opponents say they know the schools need help but don't believe bottles are the way to do it. >> you can't tell me they can't come up with an alternative plan to take the money off working class people. >> monique griego. the bottle tax is part of the better schools initiative that she hopes will bring in

school funding. the tax is being introduced at tonight's council meeting. we're being spoiled with more beautiful skies. meteorologist bernadette woods and bob turk are updating our conditions, here's bob. >> these temperatures are normal for the middle of april once again. take a look at radar, there's nothing around here. there's just a few clouds drifting by for the most part clear. there'll be a weak front going through the area. it'll be a little cooler tomorrow, probably by as much as 10 degrees. take a look at the region as we speak. right now we're still at 63, 63 in washington, haguers town 64. compared to yesterday the same hour was 16 degrees warmer. same thing in washington. 18degrees warmer in haguerstown. there's a chance we will see rain moving in here by the middle of week. which will give us an

indication of how dry we will be. bernadette woods takes a look at that. >> as we've been benefiting on a beautiful afternoon. we had a very wet into 2011 but since we started 2012, look at this we're almost 2-inches below just for this month alone and for the year about 2-1/2 inches below our rainfall. and then our normal. we did bring a surplus coming into this year as we explained but it's starting to add up pretty quickly. we will need the rain coming our way, but it is in the form of rain as the warm air is going to blanket the entire region. still ahead on wjz's eyewitness news at 5:00, dozens of cruise ship passengers robbed at gunpoint. how one woman's quick thinking could lead police to the suspect. fighting to survive, several maryland firefighters are badly hurt on the job. we'll have an update on their recovery. a townsend man shot in his own home as he catches a burglar in the act. the suspect is now in custody

a townsend man is in the hospital after he was shot by a burglar inside his home. tonight the suspects facing charges but that is not enough for the homeowner. >> reporter: judge denied the suspect bail today and even though he is behind bars tonight, many neighbors say they are still on edge. in a quiet community less than half a mile from downtown

townsend neighbors are shocked that someone here was shot. >> we had never heard of anything like that that violent. >> it's a very family oriented neighborhood. very safe, that's why i think a lot of families come here. >> reporter: 49-year-old bradford steven hollis broke into this home on the 500 block of allegheny avenue, when the homeowner a 65-year-old man came home to find him. police say hollup shot him in the back of the neck then drove off. a couple of blocks away, an officer spotted hollop and pulled him over. they say he was dressed head to toe in camouflage and in his car he had some of the victim's belongings. even with hollop behind bars, neighbors are still worried that crime is beginning to

increase. she said this isn't the first time the victim's house has been burglarized. but there are only so many precautions residents can take. >> you can only do alarms and a dog and you know just trying to be safe. >> reporter: hollop is now facing attempted murder. right now he is on parol for attempted murder, rape and burglary. reporting live in townsend, an andrea fujii. >> reporter: they don't believe the victim was targeted, he is expected to make a full recovery. the reporting tool is available for minor crimes including property destruction and theft. now police say it will speed up crime in courts which are needed for insurance reimbursement. it will also free up officers that are needed for more

studio this is the warmest winter we have all ever experienced. i mean going back as far as i can remember, this winter has been just remarkable. we're going to come up with all the final numbers. once they have all those winter numbers all those degrees above normal. at least how many we're going to have by this year alone. take a look at temps, check out how warm it's still out there. by the middle of april 63 in washington, 52 up in oakland. 51 cumberland and ocean much cooler at 50 degrees down there. locally still in the upper 50s to mid-50s rock hall. 63 columbia and 60 up in westminster. 64, 25 today. a cold frosty morning with clear skies, light winds. it really did drop.

some suburban areas, sunshine just really warmed us up. 64. our average high is 48. our average low is 29. that has always come up one degree from last week. # six the record high in 97. in 1984, nine above zero on this day. right now southwest winds continue being milder. to the west it's become a west wind. there actually a weak frontal boundary. hardly a cloud with it but it will drag some what cooler air tomorrow so tomorrow it'll be maybe 10 to 12 degrees cooler than today. still milder than average but it will feel a little slighter breeze. from the west to northwest, areas of precipitation beginning to develop. we start seeing some rain break around here. that rain will spread into our region as a warm front approaches from the west. cloudy skies by tomorrow night. a good chance we'll see rain on and off on wednesday. now if the winds go back to the east which they probably will

remain hospitalized. they were critically burned during a house fire. their concerned families are giving an up update on their recovery. >> reporter: firefighters went into a burning home to try to rescue those inside. >> underneath it all we're all families. although some of us are strangers, we're all the same. >> reporter: parents of the three fire fighters with the most severe injuries recall the harrowing moments after they got the call. >> took the longest drive, three hours from new york and didn't know what to expect. >> reporter: otulle is facing up to eight months of medical treatment. ferrel has respiratory issues and is breathing through a breathing tube. mike mccleary has severe burns to his hands and bruised ribs. fire investigators are still trying to determine how that

fire began. >> there was fire showing from both sides of the house and the rear. we attempted to darken down the fire from the outside first. >> all units 6354 evacuate. >> reporter: ethan and harry come from fire fighting families miles apart, but are united. >> a special foundation for injured firefighters is paying for the victim's loved ones to stay in washington, d.c. as they recover. an after school fight in southern california is now the center of a murder investigation. denise is in the newsroom with more on the tragic events which resulted in the death of a 10- year-old, denise. >> the los angeles county coroner's office has ruled the death of joanna ramos manslaughter. ramos was involved in a fight with an 11-year-old girl then

later collapsed at home. her sister says joanna died after surgery for a blood clot on the brain. no arrests had been made but there were seven witnesses in the fight but it did not involve any weapons and no one was knocked to the ground, mary. >> thank you, denise. witnesses add there was no indication the victim was bullied. tina krauss says the violence is escalating in afghanistan. >> reporter: a suicide bomber struck this base in eastern afghanistan as u.s. forces were coming off duty. the blast killed at least nine afghans and injured dozens more including several american soldiers. the taliban called the attack pay back for the coran burnings at a u.s. base. over the weekend an afghan policeman killed two u.s.

officers at the interior minister in kabul. riots are raging across afghanistan despite continued apologies from president obama and military commanders who have called the burning an accident. >> we are condemning it in the strongest possible terms. >> reporter: furious protesters threw a bomb injuring seven american special forces. the violence prompted the united nations to evacuate its international staff from the area. nato has pulled their advisors. despite the pull back, america is dedicated to its mission in

afghanistan. a mission that includes training afghan troops u.s. soldiers are not ever sure they can trust. >> reporter: 11 people were killed in the protest. government forces continue to battle the rebel uprising activist group says 135 people have been killed across the country. the european union responded to the escalating violence by placing new sanctions on syria. the government of president assad countered by saying a new constitution will pass by voters and will reed to political reform. higher gas prices are one reason for the rising prices at the pump. today marked the 20th straight day gas prices have risen. according to aaa the average price for a gallon of regular is $3.75. that's a 25-cent increase over last month's price. rick santorum and mitt romney are in a tight race

going into tomorrow's republican presidential primaries in michigan and arizona. as danielle nottingham reports, the candidates are making one final campaign push before the voters head to the polls. mitt romney told workers in his home state of michigan that he'll be better at turning around the economy than rick santorum. >> i've spent 25 years in business. i understand santorum is a nice guy but he's never had a job in the private-sector. >> reporter: michigan and arizona hold primaries on tuesday, but both men have concentrated their time elsewhere. santorum is trying to convince voters he's the true conservative. >> i don't believe the government should be telling whaus to do. >> reporter: in detroit cars are king and both romney and

santorum oppose the government bail out of the car companies. but that's not stopping the candidates from reaching out to auto workers. >> it's not the case where union members are primarily democrat. there's a lot of diverseification out there. bowman works at the production line at ford and took a big pay cut when the industry collapsed he believes michigan needs more than just automobile jobs. >> i really wanted to know who best represents not only my views but what's best in michigan for job creation, job growth and that's why i finally chose mitt romney. >> with the race so close, both romney and santorum are focused on getting their supporters to the polls tuesday. in detroit michigan, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. presidential candidate rick santorum will get secret service protection next week.

in tonight's health watch, baseball and softball seasons are approaching so pediatricians are issuing new guidelines to protect young athletes from getting hurt. terrell brown reports for wjz with the details. >> reporter: ryan venezia is learning how to play baseball from the pros. >> i want to try my best to be in the mlb. because like i want to be a first baseman in there and all that. >> reporter: he's only 9 years old, so his dad wants to make sure he's taking precautions. >> not overusing them. making sure they stretch before the game.

>> the american academy of pediatrics is putting out new guidelines to keep young athletes safe. >> the group recommend teaching kids proper throwing techniques, training and conditioning to prevent injuries, because children are prone to hurt their shoulders and elbows. >> as they're throwing if they overuse their arms that causes problems. >> reporter: more than 8 million kids ages 6 to 17 play the game every year in organized recreation leagues. young pitchers should not pitch competitively more than eight months of the year. >> there's a lot of stuff, a lot of information out there that gives you the guidelines but the guidelines have to be followed. >> reporter: ryan is glad his son is learning how to play right off the bat. >> if they have the right
