>> reporter: helped to train afghanistan police. this weekend, one of those afghan policemen assassinated him and another u.s. officer inside the highly secured building. that attack, suspected pay back for the burning of the karan by u.s. troops. >> my dad, he was a good man. >> reporter: the news devastating his wife and four children who live in baltimore. >> take care of mommy. take care of mommy. >> take care of my sweetheart if anything ever happens to me. >> reporter: before taking full-time work with the national guard, he spent years as a phys ed teacher for several baltimore county schools. his last teaching job was at carnie elementary where staff remember him well. >> he was the kind of person who came into the room and just calmed it down.

>> when he got his job with the army he said he had two passions -- one was working with kids and the other was a soldier. and he was so fortunate to do both. >> reporter: he is the 12th maryland guardsman to lose his life in the global war on terror. >> it's really touching to see how many lives he did touch. >> reporter: the military says they know who his killer is and there's an active search to find him. >> the remains arrived at dover air force base. since their murders, the top u.s. commander in afghanistan has withdrawn all military advisors from the building. we have breaking news from new jersey where a flight is forced to land on its belly. the plane's nose gear collapsed

when it landed tonight. the passengers and crew had to use the emergency chutes to get off the plane. the airport was briefly shut down, no one was hurt. a high schooler in ohio opens fire in the cafeteria in what looks like a targeted school shooting. our cbs affiliates tell us a second student is now dead, three other teens are injured. >> reporter: parents cried and hugged their children outside of the high school after a fellow student opened fire in the school cafeteria during breakfast. >> we feel so disheartened. >> reporter: a teacher may have saved lives by running after the suspect. >> one of the teachers happened to chase the shooting suspect out of the building. he immediately at that point, our officers entered the building, went to the five injured students that were injured, and got ems in there

right behind them. >> reporter: the shooter turned himself in. students who witnessed the attack say there was chaos with people running and screaming down the halls. teachers ushered the students out of the building and into the elementary school building across the street. parents lined up outside to collect their kids. >> i hope every parent, if you haven't hugged or kissed your kid in the last couple of days, take that time. >> reporter: the victims are four boys and a girl. one victim said he recognized the shooter as an outcast who may have been bullied. police have the handgun and they're running a background check to trace where and when he got it. the school is planning a candle light vigil for the victims tomorrow night. >> we have just learned the shooter told police he stole the gun from his uncle. controversial bottle tax could get higher. the tax has been in place for two years and now city leaders want to double it to pay for

school construction. wjz is live and we have the strong reactions from both sides of the issue. >> reporter: the bill would raise the bottle tax to a nickel. it was just introduced tonight, but it's already drawing fiery response. a battle is brewing over bottles. >> we owe our children at least 5-cents. >> we're going to lose sales. we're going to lose customers. >> beverage container tax. >> reporter: hears a bill to raise the bottle tax from 2-cents to 5-cents. the money would help fix crumbling classrooms throughout the city. >> our kids deserve better and sometimes it takes tough decisions to make sure that we provide a way forward. >> reporter: it could bring in an extra $10 million a year. it's an investment supporters say city schools need desperately. >> there's rats running around. it's hot, 90 degrees in some

classrooms. >> frankly, this city has not empowered our children to succeed. it's done the opposite. >> reporter: many say it will hurt their bottom line. >> it's too much. we're at that tipping edge. >> reporter: the 2-cent tax has lost jobs and sent customer toss the county. >> the 2-cent tax hit us hard. now they want to go to 5-cents, it will double the impact. >> reporter: supporters say they have to start somewhere, now it's up to the council to decide. and there will be a public hearing on the proposed increase. it if does pass, it would take effect in july 2013. >> thank you. both the mayor and school ceo will head to annapolis to testify about school construction. we are hours away from a key republican show down in

michigan. both campaigning hard heading into tomorrow's primary. michigan is considered home turf for romney. republicans in arizona also head to the polls tomorrow. ron paul and newt gingrich are trailing the front runners in both state. a female student was sexually assaulted by a stranger in her dorm and it is not the first attack this school here. we have more on this alarming problem and what the campus is doing about it. >> reporter: that's right. police are saying that a very vigilant roommate may have stopped a bad situation from getting worse. campus police say the assault happened early sunday morning. two men gained access to the 7th floor room of an 18-year-old student. have you felt safe? >> i have. i have. it's like a wake-up call. >> reporter: the 18-year-old was the victim of an assault. one of the suspects was touching

her leg and another man holding her laptop. her 19-year-old roommate returned. they confronted the men who fled. >> one individual who gained access took an opportunity to place his hand on the young lady's leg. >> reporter: students have to take an active roll in their safety by keeping doors locked and being aware of their surroundings. >> watch yourself, watch around you, watch your friends. >> reporter: this surveillance video of a man running matches the description of a person who broke into the bedrooms of three separate women and fondled them in september of last year. there's the case of the infamous bar cuddler. >> that's horrible. how can people just get this and violate privacy? >> individuals need to take the proper precautions. walk with groups. >> reporter: there's only a description from one of the two

suspects. a man described as 5 feet 8 inches tall wearing blue jeans and a gray baseball cap. >> encouraging students to report any suspicious activity. a woman will get some of her horses back. animal controlled seized all 133 polish arabian horses last year. marsha cut a deal with prosecutors that lets her get back half of the horses. animal control will randomly check on the animals. a maryland sports star comes home to promote the arts this schools. visited the charter school today. he is passionate about the arts. this is celebration of the arts week. baltimore schools will host art contests and workshops. he credits art with helping him cope with add as a child. coming up, a humble hero.

it is 51 degrees and clear in central maryland right now. the complete forecast is coming right up. a fast-moving fire rips through a strip mall in oklahoma city. smoke could be seen for miles. the intensity of the blaze forced firefighterrers to stay outside the building. no one was injured and the cause is under investigation. an after-school fight between two young girls in california is now a homicide investigation. police say 10-year-old joanna collapsed hours after the fight. she died following emergency surgery for a blood clot on her

brain. the fight started over a boy, so far no arrests have been made. a texas man risks his life to save three children from a family he didn't even know. he saw a house on fire and a mother screaming for help. she told him her three babies were still inside and he ran in, he was able to rescue them before the firefighters even arrived. >> door's locked. i'm trying to figure out how to get in. i had to go back and find the baby. she had another baby in there. smoke was ridiculous. >> no one was injured. in the end, the family says joe left before they even had a chance to thank him. they were reunited the following day. an engine room fire leaves an italian cruise ship in the pirate-infested watersover the indian ocean. without power and has more than 1000 people on board. help is not expected to arrive until tomorrow afternoon. now it is the sister ship of the

family got quite a shock. it turned out this little kitty hitched a ride under the hood of their car. she heard cat sounds. she thought the car was haunted. right. she drove about 20 miles before popping the hood and discovered the stow away. the kitty is doing fine and now will stay with the family. who could give it up? we'll be right back. ,,,,
