miss momentum, mitt romney celebrates a two-state primary sweep. >> we're going to take back america. america is greatest nation in the history of the earth. we're going to keep it that way. wild weather. while a snowstorm barrels down on the midwest, severe storms strike the nation's heartland. and a community mourns the victims of a teenage gunman as families grieve and recall the horror. >> i just tried to call him. nothing. he didn't answer. left a message. it's mom, call me back! captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for february 29, 2012.
4:31 am
good morning everybody. thank for joining us. i'm betty nguyen. mitt romney dodged a political bullet and regained momentum. in the race for the republican presidential nomination. romney scored a narrow comeback victory in the michigan primary holding off a strong challenge by rick santorum. in yesterday's other primary in arizona as expected romney posted a convincing win. but romney eeked out a hard fought victory in his native michigan where he and santorum had been running neck and neck. susan mcginnis has details. in northville, michigan. good morning, susan. good morning, betty. mitt romney just narrowly escaped what would have been a very embarrassing defeat here in michigan, his home state. winning here and in arizona gives him new momentum heading into future races and it's calling into question rick santorum's longevity. >> mitt romney moves on with renewed momentum. to next week's super tuesday. >> thank you.
4:32 am
>> last night he went two for two. he won the primary in arizona and narrowly defeated rick santorum. in michigan. >> we didn't win by a lot but we won by enough and that's all that counts. >> with two more states in the win column, romney is refocusing his efforts on beating president obama. >> in a second term, he would be unrestrained. by the demand of reelection. we can't afford four years of barack obama with nothing to answer to. >> rick santorum finished in second place in both states. his campaign says the tight race in michigan proves this is a two-man race. >> a month ago they didn't know who we are. but they do now. >> one of the biggest issues for voters was a candidate's ability to defeat president obama. recent polls show in a head to head matchup in michigan, the president would beat mitt romney. >> newt gingrich bypassed michigan and arizona to get a jump-start on the ten states in play on super tuesday. he's looking for georgia to be his first win since south carolina in january. >> the odds are pretty good
4:33 am
we'll carry georgia. >> ron paul hasn't won a state yet. >> we're still winning a lot of delegates and that's what counts. >> the gop candidates have to win 1144 delegates to clinch the nomination. mitt romney leads that race. so plan on seeing more of newt gingrich as next tuesday comes close. he's concentrating on super tuesday, especially georgia. betty? >> all right, susan mcginnis in northville. thank you. >> in both states, exit polls show the economy was the number one issue in both states. in michigan, romney scored well with more moderate voters and party loyalists. as reported, romney easily won over michigan voters who said electability was their main concern. he also won among female voters. romney beat santorum among catholic voters in michigan. chief washington correspondent bob schieffer has more on yesterday's election results.
4:34 am
>> well, mitt romney said we didn't win by much but we won by enough. which was the quote of the night. that pretty much sums it up. if he had not won, it was a small victory. but let's say he lost by the same margin. he would have had to spend all of the next couple of days explaining why it was as a candidate with the most money with the best organization why it was that he lost in his home state. and there would have been questions. people would have asked look, if he can't win in michigan, where is he going to be able to win down the line. so it wasn't a big win, but it was a win. and winning is always better than losing. now the romney campaign can move on to some of these big states where he'll be contesting on super tuesday, like ohio, tennessee, georgia. you may see santorum do very well in ohio, which is one of the biggest prizes. newt gingrich is concentrating on georgia. but at least mitt romney can now
