deadly weather. tornadoes tear through the midwest. >> at least nine people are dead and scores of homes are destroyed. >> hi, everybody. i'm kai jackson. and i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. >> violent storms cut a path of destruction through kansas and missouri. the death toll is climbing and power is out for thousands. >> reporter: crews are digging out, trying to clear away rubble and salvage what remains of homes and businesses in harrisburg, illinois. the deadly storm flattened houses and uprooted trees. >> it's just your worst nightmare coming true. >> reporter: powerful storm also leveled a strip mall just before dawn. >> i'm adjust glad it happened

at night. this would have been horrible for people to have been in this building when it happened. >> reporter: there were 16 tornado sightings across the midwest. the national weather service confirmed a twister touched down in harvey, kansas. more than a dozen people were injured there. >> she scraped and we went into the bathtub. >> reporter: the tornado took just three minutes to decimate nearly half the town, including a church. we split up and went around checking on neighbors. so that was really the first thought. you know, not that the church was gone but making sure that people were okay. >> this home was split open. a family car is now in the kitchen. and it looks like a twister went through the tourist town of branson, missouri. witnesses say they saw funnel clouds ping ponging through the roof. it took the roofs off some hotels and damaged the movie theaters. missouri's governor declared a state of emergency and toured the damage. >> 11 million come to this

tours mecca of our country. we want to get them stood back up. >> the governor says branson will be back, bigger and better. bigat shaban, wjz eyewitness news. >> there were three deaths in missouri, including one person who was killed in a trailer park not far from branson. >> well, that same system is bringing wet weather to our area. outside, it is chilly, damp, and gray. and some areas are foggy. let's go right to meteorologist tim williams, tracking first warning live doppler radar. tim? >> good afternoon, mary. good afternoon, everyone. what we're losing with this system as it progresses east is the severity of it all. much of it lost over the mountains. we have a tornado warning as far -- or as close, as we should say, to the west ohio valley. temperatures in the 40s. we're at 49 degrees. and we have a good bit of rain moving in the east. we have .95 inches reported at bwi marshall since this system started dumping rain on us.

just right after midnight or so, across parts of the area. what you're seeing here is the warm air out ahead of this front. the front is the distinguishing line between the warm and the cold air. and then there are several different areas of low pressure that are kind of spinning all of that air and bringing it auth. -- altogether. and this is the system that has brought the severe weather toward parts of the midwest, parts of the ohio valley and parts of kentucky and even missouri. and of course, up at the top there, those are blizzard-like conditions up near minneapolis and toward the dakotas. what we have here, temperatures are going to reflect this system moving on through. you can basically see the difference in the type of precipitation. rain down towards us. we have snow to the northern edge of us. all of that warmer air and all of that mixing toward the midwest. we'll continue to keep you posted. of course, we are not expecting anything we have here. >> tim, thank you. we'll see you then. should a convicted killer live or die.

a maryland jury delivers a verdict in a case. >> the same jury that convicted lee stevens of murder, of murdering corporal david mcgwynn decided today to spare his life. 37-year-old lee stevens was the first person eligible because of a link to dna. stevens was serving when he killed mcgwynn, who was working as an officer. and even each three -- he had a chance of parole. but now he'll die from prison. >> weijia jiang has more about the sentencing coming up at 5:00 and 6:00. and we have an update we first brought you at noon. a wicomico county sheriff's deputy is in the hospital, with a gunshot wound to the arm. and moments ago, the suspect was taken into custody. deputy thomas funk was shot while working with a u.s. task

force. they were responding to a barricade situation. we'll have more on the barricade, and the suspect coming up new at 5:00 and 6:00. a 5-year-old baltimore girl, dead. her father charged with her murder. monique griego has more on what police are saying. >> reporter: so far, police haven't released many details in this case or said exactly how the little girl died. >> reporter: late monday night, police responded to a home in northwest baltimore. inside, a 5-year-old little girl is found clinging to life. emergency crews rushed her to the hospital in critical condition. >> the lights weren't on. but i thought they were just looking around for somebody. >> reporter: that little girl, identified as maya car later died. her death, at first called suspicious, is now a homicide. and police believe her father, seen here, is the person responsible. 22-year-old matthew car is taken into custody tuesday and is now charged with murder. >> you won't see a child getting hurt or anything happening to him. you know what i mean?

>> reporter: according to court records, maya's mother filed the patern itsuit against car back in 2007. he was ordered to pay support. so as police investigated exactly what happened at this house, car is facing first- degree murder and a host of other charges, including child abuse, assault and reckless endangerment. >> reporter: car had a bail review hearing early this morning. we're told the judge denied him bail, saying based on charges, he was a threat to society and a flight risk. monique griego, wjz eyewitness news. >> and car is being represented by a public defender. we're also told no family members attended the hearing. councilwoman controversy. she's caught going more than 100 miles an hour in a county vehicle. but receives only a warning. vic is in the newsroom with more on the harsh criticism today for the prince george's county police department. vic? >> a councilwoman was stopped for speeding and veering across lanes on the capital beltway

last week. the officer ticketed her and gave her a warning for dollar o do -- for doing 105 in a 55- mile-per-hour zone. they say a warning is not unusual. the officer did not use a radar gun. wjz checked toll's records and she has numerous traffic violations. toll said she was late for a meeting when she was pulled over and she regrets the incident. >> toll says she will agree to pay the $90 for the illegal lane change. michigan and arizona are in the rear-view mirror. and now the focus is on super tuesday. randall pinkston reports for wjz, and how mitt romney is trying to build on his big wins. >> reporter: mitt romney wasted no time getting back to the campaign trail. he toured hoping to build on his winds in michigan and arizona. >> we need your vote. i need you guys to get out. >> ohio is holding a contest

next week. the latest poll shows romney trailing rick santorum in ohio. he visited a baptist college near knoxville as he continues to search social conservatives. >> i'm running because i want to return the power back to the american people. >> reporter: the race tuesday could determine which gop candidate will face president obama in november's election. newt gingrich and ron paul see it as an opportunity to get back in the race. >> reporter: gingrich is campaigning in georgia, the state he represented in congress for more than 20 years. he's pinning his hopes on the south. >> that is the key building block that we have to have to move forward in the presidential campaign. >> reporter: congressman ron paul was at work wednesday, criticizing ben bernanke at a hearing on capitol hill. >> as much as i'd like to do something with the fed, i say the fed is going to self- destruct eventually when the

money is gone. >> reporter: paul is hoping his message of economic reform will resonate with voters and give him a chance to catch up to the front runners. at the white house, randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> 419 delegates are up for grabs on super tuesday. sad news today in the music world. singer davy jones has died. he was taken to a hospital in florida with chest pains. he died a short time later from a heart attack. jones found claim to the lead singer of the pop group called the monkees, in the 1960s tv show. he went on to have a successful singing and acting career. jones is survived by has wife and daughter. davy jones is dead at the age of 66. let's check on the roads now with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. >> hi, kai. hi, everyone. the beltway already beginning to back down. expect delays from york road to providence road. on the west side inner loop, heavy there around the security boulevard. average speed at this hour, about 40 miles an hour.

an intense search is under way right now, after a u.s. helicopter crashes off the coast. the chopper, an mh65 dolphin, went down tuesday night while on a training mission. now, one person is dead. and three are missing. rescue crews are searching through the waters of mobile bay for the missing. the cause is under investigation at this time. washington, d.c. metro unveils a new alert system, designed to provide customers with the latest information. the transit agency says metro alert sends e-mail and text message alerts to bus passengers about things like route-specific delays, detours, and schedule changes. this is baltimore's metro system that you're looking a. also they -- says they will

have this regarding changes. a witness is expected to testify in the trial of a former rutgers student, accused of spying on his former roommate. the gay man, only identified as mb, is expected to testify this week. duran ravi is accused of using his web cam to spy on his roommate as heiss kiss -- he kissed a man. he is on trial. >> a man accused of murdering his wife while on vacation. and for the first time, he's talking about what happened that night. year-old wife, monica. >> everyone seems to go outside for a long time there. i didn't kill my wife. i really didn't. >> reporter: the reality is not lost on bruce beres ford redman. >> am i a survivor or not? i think very much so. >> reporter: a 48 hours exclusive videotaped this on a cell phone. >> i can't how anyone who listened to everything said, would possibly think i would kill my wife. >> reporter: beres ford redmond and his wife monica were vacationing in mexico with their two young children. they were trying to patch up their marriage after his wife discovered he had had an affair. bruce said his wife went out shopping and never returned. mexican police accused him of killing her and dumping her body. monica's family believes he did

it. >> he said, bruce, where is my sister? and he mocked me and said, i don't know. it was just a horrible experience. >> reporter: mexican prosecutors say they have a strong case. bruce had scratches on his hands and feet. he claims he got them at a water park playing with his kids. and people at a nearby hotel room thought they heard a woman screaming for help the day monica disappeared. >> what they heard, in fact, was my son and daughter, squealing and laughing and playing, rough housing. >> reporter: but police aren't buying any of his story. >> i wish i could believe that he didn't have anything to do with my sister's murder. but the evidences are very strong. >> if convicted, beres ford redmond faces 12 to 20 years in a mexican prison. the dow did not stay over the 30 mark for long. all the markets are down today. dow is down 53.

s&p off 6 1/2. and nasdaq off 20. let's go to new york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. the federal reserve is sticking with its plan to hold interest rates at record low levels, until at least late 2014. fed chief ben bernanke said that low rates are essential to the recovery. a government report found the economy grew faster than expected last quarter. analysts say that could set the stage for stronger growth this year. mortgage giant fannie mae says it lost. and is now asking the federal government for more than $4.5 billion to pay for its deficit. the most expensive bailout was fannie mae and freddie mac. james murdoch has stepped down as executive chairman of news international. the company says murdoch is

here's what people are talking about. >> stranded in the indian ocean. more than 1,000 passengers are waiting for their rescue from pirate-infested waters. this as they take on the issue of cruise ship safety. alison harmelin reports for wjz. >> the italian cruise ship liner, costa alegra is on its way after it was disabled. all passengers on board are uninjured but weary from days with little food and water and no electricity. this is the second accident in just over a month. 25 people died when the costa concordia struck a reef off the italian coast. officials have charged the captain with abandoning his ship. >> we have a captain who forgot he was a captain. >> reporter: brian solerno assured any ship entering american ports is held to the highest standards. >> we do have the most rigorous examination program in the world. >> reporter: since the costa

concordia accident, the cruise line industry has put new safety rules in place. now emergency drills are conducted before the ship even leaves the dock. >> reporter: americans samir and diffia boarded to celebrate their anniversary. by dinner, they were fighting for their lives, during the ship's chaotic evacuation. >> there was no order of boarding the life boats. and everyone was kicking, shoving and pushing to get onto the life boat. >> reporter: a preliminary investigation shows the crew had not been adequately trained in emergency procedures. >> we saw the crewmembers amongst us, running around, panicked, frustrated, and clueless. >> reporter: they are currently assisting with the investigation into both cruise line accidents. in new york, alison harmelin, wjz eyewitness news. >> and american-based carnival cruise lines owned the costa cruise liners. kai is live in the newsroom with more on the war crimes

tribunal. >> today, a lawyer entered a plea on behalf of majid kahn. kahn has been held for decades since he planned a suicide attack on prime minister pervez musharraf. kahn lived in the u.s. from 1996 to 2002 and graduated from owings mills high. according to a plea bargain, his sentence would be capped to 25 years in exchange for pleading guilty. >> he is also expected to testify against other detainees. michelle miller reports for wjz, the shooting suspect didn't even know the suspects he gunned down. -- students he gunned down. >> reporter: t.j. lane arrived tuesday, shielded by a bulletproof vest.

inside -- instead, he sat with his grandmother and two aunts. prosecutor say they will likely charge lane as an adult, with two counts of aggravated murder monday. >> 911, what is your emergency? >> we just had a shooting at our school. we need to get out of here. >> okay, ma'am. we got a school shooting. ma'am, what school. >> chardon high school. >> reporter: newly-released 911 tapes captured the terrifying scene as it unfolded. >> yes, i'm a student. i was right by the student shooting the gun. >> who was the shooter? >> his name is thomas lane. >> prosecutors david choy says lane has admitted to taking a knife and a 22-caliber pistol into a school, pulling the trigger 10 times. >> he chose his victims at random. this is not about bullying this. is not about drugs. >> reporter: three victims, russell king, jr., palmentor and another died. two injured include joy rickerts, who was released from

the hospital. assistant football coach frank call is being credited with saving lives after he chased lane out of the school. >> chardon has always been great. it's going to be great. and i just want to thank everybody for their thoughts and prayers. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: last night, thousands of residents in the tight-knit community gathered once again to remember the victim. >> just coming together as a group. coming together in the same spirit, what better way is there than that to begin the healing? >> now, some students say lane wrote about his intentions on twitter in the days before the attack. his twitter page has since been taken down. an elderly man shot inside his anne arundel county home. he confronted the intruder. and during the struggle, the homeowner was shot with a gun. the intruder fled. and the homeowner was taken to

the hospital with life- threatening injuries. a priest makes news because he apparently denies communion to a woman because of her sexual orientation. >> reporter: what makes it more troubling is where it happened, where the priest was residing over the funeral for the woman's mother. >> i was stunned. >> reporter: it has been an extremely difficult week for barbara johnson. perhaps the most difficult week of her life. >> i feel very sad. >> reporter: it all started saturday, at st. john newman catholic church. where friends and family had gathered to say goodbye to barbara's mother, who died last week after a brief illness. >> i was in the first pew, in the first seat, next to my mother's coffin. >> reporter: just a few minutes before the fume began, father garnle apparently learned that barbara was involved in a romantic relationship with another woman. >> i am a lesbian. >> a lifelong catholic and former schoolteacher, barbara said she hadn't even considered her sexual orientation would be

a problem with father marcel, until she stepped forward to take communion. >> he said, i cannot give you communion because you live with a woman. >> reporter: though shaken, barbara said she tried to compose herself to give her mother the dignified funeral she deserved. so a few minutes later, barbara began her eulogy. >> at which time, father marcel left the altar and did not return until i finished my eulogy. >> reporter: according to barb barbara, the story gets even worse. becausear first re -- because after first refusing to give her communion, then walking off when she was speaking, he refused to accompany her where she was burying her mother. she said she was told that father marcel was suddenly ill. >> we don't get a do-over. this is her one moment to pass from the earth. >> the catholic church says

father marcel should have talked to the parishioner in private. >> it is unclear if he'll be disciplined by the diocese. a school bus collided with an suv in silver spring. that vehicle then hopped the curb and crashed into the side of a home. 33 children were on board but no serious injuries were reported. and the suv driver was hospitalized, but the injuries are nonlife-threatening. it is unclear if slick roads contributed to the crash. it has been a wet wednesday. heavy showers drenched maryland. taking ray live look outside. it is still dressling over much of the -- drizzling over much of the region. bob is here with the numbers. >> officially, at bwi, over an inch of rain today. still more coming. right now, it's pretty quiet around central maryland. but a whole batch is developing along far western maryland. moderate to heavy showers. warm front, actually warming up out there. and it will go up a few more degrees this evening.

but take a look at temperatures here right now. with cloudy skies. a little drizzle and fog. rain to the west. and way down to the southeast, where it is warmer. 57 in pax river. way up to 41. it's been the 40s all day long. but the temperatures right now, very close to where it was yesterday. just four degrees cooler. up in hagerstown and cumberland, 8 and 10 degrees cooler. looks like tomorrow, believe it or not, we may go 10 to 15 degrees warmer than this afternoon. and sunshine returns. vic? >> okay, bob. thank you. let's check on the roads now with christy breslin, wjz traffic control. . >> hi, vic. hi, everyone. traffic continues to get heavy out there. no improvements at all on the west side inner loop. we're looking at 20 minutes from southwestern boulevard to security boulevard. over on the north side inner loop, stop and go there from dulaney valley road, to perbeing parkway. it does break free after that. and northbound 95, stop and go there from 175 to route 100. as far as accidents go, still a lot to talk about.

a police chase in iowa comes to a sudden and dramatic end. landfill. >> reporter: the report says the victims were among those killed at the pentagon and in shanksville. it says portions of remains that could not be identified, were handed over to a biomedical waste contractor. the contractor then incinerated them and took the remains to a landfill. matthew flocko was among those killed at the pentagon. his remains were handled by dover air force base. his mother told eyewitness news the family did receive all of his remains, but her heart goes out to others impacted by the new reports. >> it's scary. they should, you know -- you think the remains of people killed that way, would have been better handled. >> reporter: general john abizaid headed the committee that wrote the report. he says he doesn't know a way to find out how many 9/11 victims went through the mortuary and may have been partially disposed of in a landfill. >> we don't think it should have happened. we think that our fallen deserve what they're getting

now, which is the fallen remains are taken out to sea and they're buried at sea. >> that was todd quinones reporting. it was stopped in 2008. the former security chief at a west virginia mine learns his fate after lying to investigators, following a deadly mine accident. a judge sentenced huey to vert to four years in federal prison. he faced up to 25 years for lying to investigators and trying to destroy documents in a 2010 explosion that killed 29 miners. it was the worst u.s. mining disaster in more than 40 years. an update on the long-term effects of the full body scanners at the airport t. according to a new report from the department of homeland security, the radiation levels from those scanners are not dangerous for passengers. researchers say the radiation from the machines is so low, a passenger would have to be screened 47 times a day, every day, to reach unsafe levels.

a deer crashes through a store in georgia. bernard watson reports, the scared animal took down a video. >> all remember hearing something wild. >> a big boom kind of noise. >> craziest thing i've ever seen. scared me to death. >> reporter: they're talking about a deer who decided to pay a visit to this convenience store. >> i see this little furry thing running around. and i'm like, is it a dog? i'm like, it's a deer. >> it's all caught on camera. >> i was very scared. i knew someone was going to get hurt. because there was a lot of people there. >> reporter: sebastian was there with his sister when the doe headed to the front door. >> my sister was in front of me. i ran in front of her. so she just pushed me. and i went to the other door. and i just ran to go get my dad for help. >> reporter: take a look at the video again. it shows samantha irons getting knocked down by the deer and customers running. >> and nbc thing -- next thing i know, i end up on the ground

saying, help me. >> i was in shock. my main concern was this little girl. >> i don't remember. >> the clerk called 911 while a customer checked with samantha. >> when she was on the phone with 911 and said, there's a deer, that's when i realized what had happened. >> reporter: samantha suffered a concussion and cuts on her leg. but she'll be okay. and it could have been worse. >> thank god she was up on her feet and moving. and we got her to safety. and today, she's here to tell her sister. -- story. >> the deer eventually became exhausted. and police decided to put it down. a life-or-death rescue for a horse in australia. the horse's owner says she was riding, when suddenly both women on the horses started sinking. it took several hours, but crews were able to pull him out shortly before the tide came in. the horse was dirty.
