good morning, happy friday. thanks for joining us. i'm betty nguyen. parts of the midwest and south are bracing for another bout with mother nature today. after a series of deadly tornadoes just swept through the region on tuesday and wednesday, a new and even more powerful system is charging up and poised to strike today from the great lakes to the gulf of mexico. a severe thunderstorm watch is already under way in central missouri and forecasters say the dangerous weather will start in the afternoon. kentucky and tennessee are at the greatest risk for tornadoes. the severe weather will move into alabama, mississippi and georgia by the evening. the line of twisters that touched down this week killed 13 people in four states. on thursday, those communities started the process of cleaning up while keeping an eye on this new round of storms. >> i don't know if we get hit again, it's going to be bad, worse. it's rough. but the people keep on going, they keep on fighting. >> an ef-3 tornado roared

through the city of ridgeway, illinois, wednesday morning. it ripped apart st. joseph's catholic church which has stood for 120 years. >> think about how long the church has been here. a lot of people have been parishioners for 70, 80 years or more. been baptized here. married here. buried their parents here. >> the worst damage was located about 20 miles to the east in harrisburg, illinois. the twister killed six people there and turned life upside down for the town of about 9,000 residents. >> tougher to be here than i thought. >> cheryl herd's sister rode out the storm in awe bathtub. the tornado lifted her trailer off its foundation and smashed it across the street. >> that's my mom and dad. >> sheila skaggs recovered pictures from the wreckage in cumberland county, tennessee where her parents tried to take cover from the tornado. her father is in the hospital, her mother was killed. >> they were headed to the basement. they knew there was a problem.

and it just took them longer to get to the basement than what they knew they had time. >> kansas governor some brownback toured the damage in the town of harveyville. one man was killed there when a tornado crushed his house tuesday night. >> it reminds you just how destructive these tornadoes are and how much they can sneak in on you. >> that's something forecasters hope to avoid with the help of new technology. it was put to the test in branson, missouri on wednesday where residents had 25 minutes to take cover. that's double the national average and there were no fatalities. all thanks to revolutionary new technology called dual polarization radar. >> we're going to get a two dimensional view that allows us to detect the difference between heavy rainfall that occurs all the time and the debris the tornado can kick up. why does that make a difference? you can't see a tornado at night. >> the new radar is so sensitive it can spot flying debris as small as grass or leaves.

44 are up and running across the country. funeral services will be held next week for the three teenagers killed by a gunman in ohio. classes resume today there. last night, the chardon basketball team played a game scheduled for monday night, the day of the shooting. the alleged gunman, 17-year-old t.j. lane was charged in juvenile court yesterday but prosecutors plan to charge him as an adult meaning he could face life in prison without parole. now to politics. republican presidential hopefuls are gearing up for the ten primaries and caucuses next tuesday and a windfall of delegates. meanwhile, rick santorum is crying foul over the delegate count in michigan. duarte geraldino is in washington with more. good morning. >> good morning, betty. though romney won michigan, he did survive narrow margin. santorum's camp says that marginal victory was only possible because of a last-minute rule change.

rick santorum told supporters in spokane, washington, they'll help reenergize his campaign during its caucuses tomorrow. >> we're real excited about our chances in washington today. we think we can surprise a lot of people. >> santorum lost to mitt romney in michigan on tuesday. he says he should have been awarded half of the state's 30 delegates. michigan republicans gave romney an extra delegate saying there was cop fusion over new rules agreed to in february and a correction was made on wednesday. >> good 'ol boy network. change the rules after the game so they can win. that's pathetic. >> santorum is leading romney in the polls. though both campaign there today, ohio is a priority because it's a swing state in the general election. >> what a warm welcome. >> while campaigning in north dakota, romney says he's the candidate that can win in november. >> if i become the nominee, i'll beat barack obama and take america back. >> romney is looking to extend his lead next week. ten states in more than 400 delegates are up for grabs on

super tuesday. newt gingrich admits there's a lot at stake in georgia. the state he served in as congressman. >> i have to win georgia. i think to be credible in the race. >> while the gop candidates battle to become the republican nominee. president obama is stocking his war chest. he spent thursday fundraising in new york and his campaign expects to raise a billion dollars for this election. that goal for democrats to raise $1 billion in campaign funds for president obama already has republicans strategists scrambling to raise money for their candidates. betty? >> all right. duarte geraldino in washington for us. thank you. opponents are working to strike down maryland's same sex marriage law. >> the bill is signed. >> maryland became the 8th state to legalize same sex marriage yesterday. the law takes effect next year. >> we are one maryland and all of us at the end of the day want the same thing for our children.

we want them to live in a loving, caring and committed home that is protected equally under the law. >> opponents hope to gather enough signatures to put a referendum calling for the law to be overturned on the november ballot. so far, maine is the only state to overturn a gay marriage law passed by the legislature. like same sex marriage, another social issue making campaign headlines is birth control. the senate upheld president obama's birth control policy voting 51-48. the senate killed the blunt amendment allowing employers to opt out of the president's healthcare law on moral grounds. that includes a requirement to cover the cost of birth control. still, it is unclear what killed conservative columnist media activist and blogger, andrew breitbart. breitbart, who suffered from heart problems, collapsed and died yesterday.

the tensions with iran over its nuclear program continue to send the price of oil up. it is now just under $109 a barrel. that's an increase of more than $10 a barrel since last month. and bank of america is looking at imposing a monthly fee on some of its customers. it would affect customers with basic checking accounts. b of a would waive the fee if those customers agree to bank online, buy more products or maintain certain balances. back of america experienced a backlash last fall when it tried to impose a $5 monthly fee for debit card transactions. at&t is changing its unlimited data plans. the company will no longer let customers use more than a set amount of data each month without penalty. at&t says customers will get a text mesage when their usage approaches three gigabytes in one billing cycle and will slow customers' data speeds for the

minutes to chase down kenneth mazik, but the airport was shut down for half an hour. he's charged with driving under the influence and may face other charges. passengers from the costa allegra cruise ship stranded. this week in pirate-infested waters are safe after reaching shore on thursday. more than a thousand people were aboard and we're learning more about the rough conditions they endured. tina kraus reports. >> passengers made their way off the crippled cruise ship on the island nation of seychelles. they spent three days at sea with no running water and no air conditioning. >> the heat is unbearable. we had to spend most of our nights on the top deck of the ship. the problems began monday when a fire broke out in the coast allegra's engine room. passengers prepared to abandon ship while the crew battled the blaze. >> we all went to our stations and there was a point where we thought we would have to lower the boats. >> the crew managed to put out
