tornado outbreak, dozens dead in the south and midwest. tonight, a look at the incredible damage and the amazing story of a baby found alone miles from her home good evening, everyone, thanks for joining us. i'm adam may. more than three dozen people after the storms. the storms claimed lives in kentucky, alabama and ohio. there's more damage being reported in tennessee and the carolinas. susan mcginnis is in henryville for the latest. >> reporter: wayne jones is sifting through what's left of his henryville, indiana home. a tornado demolished this town,

sending a school bus into a building, dropping a tractor trailer on a gas station and shearing the walls off homes. terry cuts went to insect the convenience store where she used to work. >> i don't see any possible way anybody could have survived in this. >> reporter: the tornado moved with such force, it blew the back wall off of the high school gym here. devastation like this stretches across the midwest and south. a shot from the air shows the storm's path through kentucky and the town the west liberty, the national guard joins state police serving for survivors. residents who got out alive aren't allowed to go home yet. >> the area has been declared martial law and we're asking everybody to stay out. you can see it's a very dangerous area. >> reporter: in ohio, a twister for up the town of moscow and at least one person died in alabama where the first storm started friday morning. in henryville, wayne jones is trying to stay positive. >> i have insurance that covers

system that moved across the south, so take a look at this graphic. just on our doorstep before it gets out of here. temperatures held in check but there is cooler air coming our way for the beginning of the week. one of the most powerful men in maryland politics, john liepold is indicted by the state prosecutor. se facing four counts of misconduct in office and one charge of misappropriation of funds. among the allegations, liepold's security detail officers told a grand jury that they drove the county executive to parking lots so he could have sex with another county employee. liepold tells wjz he will fight the scandal. gas tax controversy, the ballots against the governor's proposal to raise it is heating up once again. wjz is leave. weijia jiang is live. >> reporter: the cover says all the revenue would go toward new transportation projects and that would mean more jobs but at a big rally today,

protesters made clear they simply don't have the money. each stroke is fueled by anger over the governor's proposal to raise the gas tax. >> the guy just has no understanding of what's going on. >> reporter: saturday morning, dozens of protesters lined route 40 in catonsville. and waved signs at drivers who shared their frustrations. >> people just started pulling up in the parking lot asking if they could sign the petition, asking if we had more signs. >> reporter: hundreds signed a petition against the bill which would apply the state's 6% sales tax to again at a 2% a year rate whanchts we know for sure -- >> what we know for sure is we're all going to pay more if we do nothing. >> reporter: but gas station owners worry they pay the biggest price. >> gas prices go higher, business is low and a lot of people going out of business. >> reporter: the governor has gotten little support, even

maryland's comp troller is blasting the hike. >> i can't find five people supporting the gas tax other than the senate president and the governor. >> reporter: taxpayers are calling for her elected leaders to step up. >> we think if enough people from catonsville call and tell the senator how they feel about the increase, they'll get the message. >> reporter: that protester is referring to edward case meyer. constituents are urging him to keep the bill off the senate floor. reporting live, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. senate president mike miller says the bill is back on the back burner now and may not be taken up until later in the session. a standoff in a baltimore neighborhood lasts all night then ends with the suspect surrendering. it happened in the 3500 block of edgewood road. police say the suspect got into

an argument during a party and fired two gunshots. no one was hurt but the swat team was called in. the standoff sended about 9:00 -- ended about 9:00 this morning. friends and family are coming together to remember a little girl was murdered. a candle light vigil was set to be held for maya carr. her father was reportedly upset because maya soiled herself. that vigil is tonight a little bit later we'll have that on eyewitness news at 11:00. every couple of years a news photograph comes along that we'll never forget. one of the most memorable images was taken by a photographer from ann lap his. -- annapolis. >> i paraplegic allegiance to the flag of united states of america. >> reporter: it's precisely

9:30 at chicken roast deli in annapolis, a ritual started some two decades ago. >> thank you and have a very good day. >> reporter: usually in this crowd, photographer stan stern. >> we're here to discuss the life of stan stern. >> reporter: stan seen here, second over, made a bit of news himself. >> the person that took the photo of john john kennedy saluting his dad's coffin when it went by. >> reporter: this photographer, the only photographer to catch one of the briefest yet most powerful images of the kennedy presidency whnchts he got that -- >> when he got ta shot, he felt -- that shot, he felt that, boy, i got something here and went back to upi and his boss was all over him, what are you doing here? >> reporter: history came to him. >> his whole career was wound around that picture. i mean that's what kind of put him into the spotlight and he became not just an everyday

photographer. >> reporter: stern left upi in the '70s coming back to annapolis to open a studio. he worked for the press service international so the press owned that image. >> stan wound up with $25, that was it. >> reporter: not a penny more and even though he captured a moment seared into our collective conscious, his name was sometimes excluded when the photo was published. friends say if he couldn't have the money, he lat east he -- oat least wanted the credit. >> he was proud of that. >> reporter: rightly so. >> sentence will be buried tuesday morning at the maryland veterans cemetery. a festival celebrating women of the world is being held in baltimore this weekend. it is called the women of the world or wow festival. it's being held in mount vernon organized by the symphony

survivors of the costa concordia ship wreck attend a hearing in italy. the trial will determine whether or not he'll stand trilg for manslaughter. the costa concordia wrecked off the coast of italy january 13th killing at least 21 people. one of the three students killed in a ohio school shooting was laid to rest. services were held today for daniel parmertor. family, friends and classmates held hearts and flags as they gathered to mourn the 16-year- old's death. the alleged shooter seen here, 17-year-old t.j. lane has been charged with three counts of aggravated murder and two counts of attempted murder. a 3-year-old girl's

curiosity almost cost her her life. after taking an x-ray of her stomach, the doctors saw the circle here. it first looked like a bracelet. then the doctors figured out a circle was 37 different magnets that had gotten stuck together. >> had not read that any child had ever swallowed more than say 10, so when i heard 37 had been swallowed it frightened me to death. >> the magazine neither were so strong, it actually for three holes in payton's lower intestine and one in her stomach. after surgery, she's doing pretty good and on her way to a full recovery. >> wow. >> you never know what kids are going to put in their mouth. >> you definitely don't. okay, turned out to be a beautiful afternoon. >> yeah. >> we've been very fortunate, all the horrible weather going on to our west. today sunshine came out, 55 degrees is where we sit right now. we will have the forecast when ,

here's the rain and the thunderstorms have moved through, all gone today. sunshine actually broke out this afternoon and a bit of the wind out of the west is bringing in some mild air. we got up to 60 degrees for our high today. when you start out in the mid- 40s, it doesn't take much to get that high. still 55 in baltimore and there is some cooler air that will come our way but not quite yet. here's our high and low on the day. now, we do have cooler air off to the northwest and that's coming into the forecast not quite yet tomorrow. the first thing up is this area here, a new low is forming along that line and that's going to move north tonight and tomorrow. for us, clouds moving in for some of us but southern parts of maryland and the eastern shore probably going to get a little bit of rain. when it does, it opens up the way for another storm coming

our way from the northwest. during the day monday, a couple of rain showers possible in western maryland before that gets out of here. here's the forecast for tonight, partly to mostly cloudy, eastern shore could get some rain. tomorrow, clouds with sunshine and rain, for the eastern shore, 50 trees -- 50 degrees for our high. chance for a couple of showers monday and tuesday, then on wednesday, sunshine returns, here comes another warm-up. ,, what's the matter? uh, trouble with a car insurance claim. ah, claim trouble.
