hi. i'm kai jackson. >> and i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. we're going to start with breaking news. a serious accident, with a rescue unfolding right now. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene with captain mike perry above it. what happened? >> reporter: it is a horrific scene. happened about an hour ago. we believe the cross street was raven road. apparently two occupants in this overturned vehicle had to be extricated. one of them, we know, was extricated and then going to be transported to a local area hospital. we are told the other occupant died at the scene. this is a three-car crash. as mark pulls out, you can see that there is a sport utility vehicle that this vehicle collided the front end with.

and apparently knocked that vehicle off balance, causing it to overturn and slide into the path of this second vehicle, which was also northbound on bel air road. all in all, there may be more persons in this vehicle extricated. as you can see, north and southbound bel air road, are closed, just above sinclaire lane. expect delays in the area. we'll stay on top of the situation and keep you updated. , back to you. >> all right, captain mike. thank you. reporting live in sky eye chopper 13. and wjz will keep you updated on this big story. the other big news. no relief for tornado victims in indiana. firstthe storms, now snow is complicating the cleanup efforts and making it treacherous. susan mcginnis is in hard-hit

henryville, indiana. >> reporter: utility crews are working to restore power. downed power lines and gas leaks are the biggest concern. workers used heavy equipment to scoop up the wreckage. courtney cummings is a freshman. >> i want to be there. and i want to be in my classes. i want to see my teachers. and i want to see my friends. >> reporter: school has been canceled for at least the rest of the week. >> reporter: work crews, residents, and businesses are wasting no time, cleaning up henryville. and insurance companies can be seen all around town, getting the claims process started. >> it's going to take a long time to rebuild. but this is a great community. and there's a lot of hope here. and we're going to get through it. >> reporter: 14-month-old angel babcock is the storm's latest victim. rescuers found her alone in the field. but she died two days later. her father, mother, and two siblings also died. a tornado sucked 17-month- old jamal stevens out of his home and threw him to a nearby

interstate. >> the top half of the house came with it. and he was actually over the back fence here. >> reporter: stevens is now out of the hospital and back with his family. back in henryville, red cross volunteer jerry holmes has responded to many disasters. he says the people here are staying positive. >> they're holding up amazingly well. >> he calls the destruction here, unbelievable. susan mcgiz of guinness -- mcginnis, wjz eyewitness news. >> meteorologist bernadetteed woos has a -- bernadette woods has a look at this. oopt oops. >> you can see -- you can see this has very dry air, contrasting with very warm, moist air. and the thing is, this contrast was so big. and you add a really strong jet stream into it. and it spun up not only tornadoes, but long-lived,

major tornadoes. we're talking on the order of ef4 and ef3. high-end tornadoes. as far as numbers go, we're hearing about an outbreak. this is a huge outbreak. alone on that date, on march 2nd, there were 80 sightings of tornadoes. you can see that was during the day. on average for the entire month of march, only 74. we had only a month worth of tornadoes in one day alone. and these were huge ones. as far as our weather goes, fortunately, none of that going on. we have snow showers making its way across the state. light snow, starting to leave us. but behind it, scattered rain and snow showers coming down. gusty northwest winds. and we will have your forecast coming up shortly. >> we're not done talking about the weather. back-to-back earthquakes shake the san francisco bay area,just before dawn. denise has the latest on the quakes. denise? >> well, mary, the first quake, a magnitude 2.9, struck just

before 6:00 p.m. followed by a magnitude 4 trembler. the shaking did not cause any significant damage. no one was hurt that we know of. it occurred on the haywood fault, which geologists say is the most active fault in that area. there is a 62% probability that the bay area will be hit by a large earthquake by 2032. mary? >> all right, denise. thank you. both of this morning's quakes were only a few seconds long. wjz is following breaking developments in a disturbing story. a 13-year-old girl is dead. her body found in an alley. wjz is live at city police headquarters. derek valcourt is there and has just released information from investigators. derek? >> at this very moment, police holding a press conference here, inside police headquarters, where they are announcing they believe this was an accidental shooting. and tonight, they say the young victim's two friends that she was hanging out with on that evening, saturday, when this all happened, have been charged with involuntary manslaughter,

after they say three of the children were playing with a gun and it accidentally went off and shot this young girl in the chest. >> i can't explain it. >> reporter: , dith turn -- edith turnage says she hasn't eaten since her daughter, 13- year-old monet turnage, went missing saturday night. her body covered in trash in a dark alley. >> reporter: saturday night, she reported her daughter missing. monet was supposed to have gone roller skating with them. >> somebody that on that evening, we were just sitting around. and we just decided that we would just go out and scout out everywhere. >> reporter: monique's 16-year- old brother and some of his friends went to find her. they located his body behind the 1600 block of cliff avenue. they ran off to get family members. >> when a young person came and

wrapped on the door so happily, and i came to the area. i saw a foot sticking from the bag. so i ran in the yard. i looked. and there was my niece. and my heart fell. >> reporter: family members say her body was found near the yard of one of the friends monet was supposed to go skating with. they feel her friends betrayed her. >> that's why we believe some kind of accident happened. and they tried to cover it up or something. >> it's the way she left here. and the way her body was found, in the backyard, with trash along -- trash through, all around her body, like someone was trying to hide the body. >> reporter: i do want to know why. but i know it's not going to bring her back. but i still know that. it's nothing really that will help us. >> reporter: tonight, the family has those answers. we are told by police that this was an accidental shooting. three children were playing with a gun when it went off. the two suspects in this case,

in you don't think black ice is dangerous, this next video will change your mind. take a look at the scene here in columbus, ohio. a string of accidents, caught by a news crew. in fact, five accidents happened within just five hours -- half an hour. and at one point, the photographer had to duck for cover. >> wow. man. >> fortunately, even watching that video, we are told, no one was seriously injured. emergency responders in philadelphia end up in an emergency situation themselves. take a look at the scene at the logan section of the city. an ambulance transporting an 80- year-old patient to the hospital, struck two vehicles

the country lowered its growth target to 7 1/2% to 8%. china's booming economy has helped lift the rest of the world since the financial crisis in 2008. and there is mixed news on the economy here in the u.s. the commerce department says factory orders fell 1% in january, the biggest decline in over a year. businesses spend dramatically less on machinery after tax credit expired. but activities on companies, including restaurants and hotels, expanded at a faster pace than expected last month. yahoo will reportedly lay off thousands in a massive restructuring. they are expected to announce changes later this month. scott thompson became ceo in january. he is trying to find ways to make the company more competitive with google and microsoft. and shares of bp hit highs. after the oil company reached a settlement with victims of the massive gump oil spill. bp expects to pay out at least $7 million as part of that.

more breaking news to tell you about. another serious accident. this baltimore county sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene. captain mike? >> reporter: we're in timonium, kai. this is a report of a personal injury accident with rescue. this is on east pedonia road on york road. apparently a two-vehicle accident, involving a pickup truck and a car. the pickup truck was caused to overturn as a result of the accident. the driver was briefly trapped. apparently, that driver has been extricated from the vehicle. and there are no ambulanceoss the scene. so it's not clear whether anybody was severely injured. the big issue at the moment is there is debris. and eastbound pedonia road at

york road is closed as baltimore county police continue to investigate this accident. back to you on tv hill. >> thank you, captain mike perry, reporting of. and now we're going to talk to bernadette with the weather. >> and a much different story here. we're going to start out with first doppler radar and say there is snow showers out there. that part of the storm has left us on these gusty, northwest winds, we're seeing these different bands coming from the northwest. and in them, snow coming down and flurries. you can see around towson, perry hall, cockeysville. there's a few more scattered about. we'll see that for the next couple of hours. we'll switch it over and show you, we had cloud comes in. take a look. the storms sort of scooted by to our south. that was a clipper system. and behind it, scattered rain and snow showers are what we're dealing with right now. the gusty northwest winds are bringing in colder air. it cooled down yesterday. but look at this. we're only at 42 degrees now in baltimore. 39 in hagerstown. oakland at 29 degrees.

and we have not felt this much this season. look how far below average we are. average now to 50. we have only topped out to 43 degrees so far. we started out the day in the 20s. and we are going back down in the 20s once again tonight. this is why. take a look at all of this carved out over the northeast and the upper midwest. that's the cold air. now it's going to cycle through here. because you also notice, behind that, there's really warm air. 67 in denver. some of the 60s in salt lake city. and that will follow this cold round of air. but we're not quite finished yet. scattered snow showers right now. they will die down overnight. then tomorrow, we're going to see sunshine return. but still a chill in the air. we'll start out the day in the 20s. and as we head into the afternoon, we'll go up into the 20s. that's it. take a look wednesday. this high pressure is going to anchor itself down to the southeast. it turns our winds down to the south. and by wednesday, we're already jumping to 60 degrees. and thursday, we're in the upper 60s. we'll have quite a swing in our direction. out on the waters with this

officials, claiming they waited too long to alert students after the first shooting on cam pus, before the -- campus, before the majority. they settled out of court with the university. vic? >> reporter: thank you. the gunman behind the massacre killed himself. family ask friends remember the young baltimore girl, allegedly beaten to death by her father. the viewing for 5-year-old maya car was held today on wabash. police say her father, 22-year- old matthew carr, killed her in a fit of rage, after she had an accident. her funeral is tomorrow. harford county police are looking for a suspect after five men were stabbed in edgewood. the men, between the ages of 17 and 22, were walking to a house when they were attacked by a large group of men. all five are in stable condition. and they are expected to recover. the department of transportation -- the department of transportation is pushing for all new cars, trucks and suvs to have built- in rear view cameras.

as mark strausman reports, it is often necessary to prevent a tragic death. >> reporter: 2-year-old cameron branson was killed in his own driveway in 2002 when an suv backing up ran him over. the driver was his own father, pediatrician greg galbranson. >> the pain doesn't get less. everyone was naive. i had no idea. i was a pediatrician going over home safety for children when they're born. watch out for extension cords, and often out for all of the things. i never told them to get a camera. >> reporter: drivers in large vehicles killed 448 children in backup accidents between 2006 and 2010, more than double the previous five years. cbs news transportation safety analyst, mark rosenher explained how the accidents generally happened. >> it's called the bye bye syndrome. when, in fact, children will run out to say goodbye to their uncles, parents, grandparents. and the drivers did not see

them. >> reporter: rear view cameras are standard on 2012 vehicles. from luxury sedans to this honda crv, which sells for $22,000. >> even a small suv like this honda, has a big blind spot. in the side view mirrors, all clear. nothing in the rear-view mirror either. but if i actually backed up right now, look at that suv. that stroller in the blind spot, which is easy to see in this rear view camera. >> reporter: the average cost of adding the car camera is under $200, eliminating the rear blind zone can save an estimated 112 lives a year. mark strausman, wjz eyewitness news. >> the expected mandate for cameras in all vehicles as part of a 2008 car safety reform bill. a national drug store chain is apologizing today, following a serious drug mix-up that could have been more than serious, even deadly. mary is in the newsroom with more. >> reporter: well, denise, a

cvs store in new jersey mixed up fluoride tablets for children with tamoxifen, a pill for breast cancer. round, white and roughly similar in size. this could affect dozens of families who fill their prescription at the chatham store location between december 20th and february 20th. health experts say drug stores are increasingly using aides to fill the prescriptions. in this case, the danger to children is low because tamoxifen does not have serious side effects. >> a spokesperson for cvs apologizes, saying safety and health of customers is their highest priority. remarkably mild winter. right now, you can see, we have snow flurries. wjz has weather ask traffic together. meteorologist bernadette woods is here. and the thermometer was over 43 degrees. can you believe this?

the body of a missing 4- year-old is pulled from the bottom of a well in new mexico. samuel jones is last seen saturday, playing with toys outside of his carls bad home. investigators think he climbed a fence and fell into a hole more than 30 feet deep. the investigation is being treated as a homicide until police can determine a cause of death. a shark tries to take a chunk out of a teenager's leg. >> that's right. 19-year-old justin worrell said he was kite surfing in orlando beach when it happened. the teen said he was resting in the water when something scraped his leg. he said he felt a quick pinch, a pull, then some pain. that shark left 22 individual teeth marks in his left leg.

but worrell was able to use his kite guard board -- kite board to swim away and get to shore. >> i felt something scratch me. and i thought i got pulled over then i looked back and saw a fin. >> worrell had to get a few stitches in his leg but says otherwise he's okay. >> surfers say it's not uncommon to see sharks there. a good samaritan springs into action when he sees a drowning man in portland. he wades through icy water and pulls the man to shore. the man was not responsive. so bystanders started cpr until paramedics arrived. he was taken to a nearby hospital where he was currently listed in good condition. passengers being put at risk. a new study from the national sleep foundation focused on pilots, train operators and bus drivers. it showed one in five pilots admitted making a serious error

due to sleeplessness. one in six truck drivers say they have had a near collision because of fatigue. it shows well rested drivers are less likely to report problems. a new problem shows that children with breathing difficulties while they sleep are at a bigger risk for behavioral problems. [ crying ] >> reporter: 2-year-old unique harper was almost always in a bad mood. >> he would be so cranky. he would always want to hit his brothers. >> reporter: his aggressiveness and irritability, prompted his mother to take him to a specialist. doctors did a sleep study and found he had severe sleep apnea. >> they said he stopped breathing 25.5 times an hour, which was very shocking to me. very shocking. >> reporter: unique also snored and breathed through his mouth. doctors call these orders sleep-

disorder breathing or sdb. a new study in the journal pediatrics shows children with sdb are more likely to develop behavioral problems by the time they're age 7. >> aggressiveness. >> they're also likely to have more emotional problems, including depression and anxiety. >> if someone is not breathing correctly, it will either cause them to have disruptions in their sleep. it will make them more restless. >> reporter: it's estimated 10% of children snore. and about 4% have sleep apnea. it's often because of enlarged tonsils or adenoids. >> reporter: unique had his tonsils and adenoids removed in december. now he sleeps through the night. his mother says he's a different child. >> he's happy. he's talkative. he runs and hugs everyone. he's just a very happy child. >> reporter: unique's breathing troubles did slow his development a bit. but he's back on track now. manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news. >> i want one of those. obesity is another common cause

bringing that light snow to the lower parts of the eastern shore. behind it, though, scattered rains and snow showers on these gusty winds. the other thing these are doing, keeping temperatures down. we cool down. 42 degrees right now. 30s to the west of us. even 36 degrees now in ocean city. way below average, after being way above it for most of the season so far. 43 is always managed for our high. 50 degrees. we have one day below average, before another round of really warm air comes our way. we've got this cold air, carved out over our region. it will cycle through. and behind it, this is what we'll follow. 67 in denver. 77 in dallas. and that area is coming our way. tomorrow, we still have a chill in the air. we're only going to tap out in the 40s. but as soon as the warm front clears us, that warm air will follow for wednesday. scattered snow showers, still coming down on the northwest winds. and you can see, they're just

tragic death. new information about the case of a 13-year-old girl. >> she was found dead, just feet from her baltimore home. >> hi. i'm kai jackson. >> and i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. >> we have breaking news. a young girl is found dead near her east baltimore home. now police are saying how she died. derek valcourt has more information where this tragic case. >> reporter: police say that young girl and her two male friends, ages 12 and 13, were playing with a rifle, when they say those boys accidentally shot her in the chest and killed her. they say it appears those boys then panicked and tried to hide her body.
