death and devastation, one year after an earthquake and tsunami. >> how j pan is planning to remember the thousands of victims. march 11th, 2011, a massive earthquake in japan triggered 30-foot waves that washed away many lives and property. a year later, while survivor struggle to survive, another quake strikes. >> reporter: those who lived through it will never forget it. the moment an un stoppable tsunami slammed the city. they say they thought it was the end of the world. stranded on the second floor of their home, they watched the giant waves come in. their story made front page news. they lost 8 family members and now live in temporary housing.

in one year they returned once to recover this memorial from the ruins. she says in japanese culture this tribute is the heart and soul of the home. the government has designated dozens of destroyed villages as tsunami risk areas, no rebuilding will be allowed. the disaster caused a meltdown at the feck she ma reactor triggering the worst nuclear crisis in 25 years. japanese officials worried they may have to evacuate tokyo. emergency drills are underway across the capital as japan prepares to mark the first anniversary of the quake. even though they have no place to return to, they sang the japanese song [foreign speaking], which means my dream is to go back home.

>> the 5.4 quake struck near the zone devastated last year. there are no reports of injuries. memorials will take place across japan sunday. in one town residents will send thousands of lanterns to sea to represent victims who died. grizzly discovery, a newborn baby found dead in the trunk of a car. denise has the story. >> autopsy results are expected today on a baby found in a car. the car was parked on the 500 block of halloween point road. the parents of the owner of the car were cleaning out the trunk last night and found the baby's body. it's unclear if this is a connection between the owner and the dead infant. the case is investigated as a homicide. police are searching for the child's mother. the maryland state police is assisting the calvert county sheriff's office in the

green and white mini cooper, also on the roadway at the same time. >> garcia was pronounced dead at a hospital. her says says she just got her license two years ago, a careful driver, a wonderful wife, and a loving mother. need to get information. >> montgomery county police are asking anyone with information about this accident to call them at 301-840-2435. a year and a day behind bars today former prince georges county council member, leslie johnson, reports to prison in virginia. johnson was convicted of destroying evidence in the corruption scheme that involved her husband , jack johnson, the former county executive. jack is serving a 7- year sentence for his crimes. the prison called camp cupcake once housed martha stewart and billy holiday.

unraveling support, arundel county firefighters joined police in expressing no confidence in leadership. mike hellgren explains what this means. >> the fire chief tells wjz he has no plans to leave the union vote broke down this way, 396 members vote nod confidence in him, 14 did have confidence. support for indicted executive john leopold and his department heads continues to unravel with firefighters vote nothing confidence in their chief days after two police unions vote nod confidence in their leadership including mr. leopold. >> leadership starts from the top. it's apparent with the indictments slated against the executive. he is a failed leader of arundel county. it's time for him the step aside and his department heads failed the citizens of arundel and too should step aside and allow people to come in and put this ship back on its course.

to be arraigned this month. a traveler through del less tries to pull one over on customs agents. a dc man arriving from japan claimed to have three cartons of cigarettes but an x-ray revealed he had 900 backs hid hidden in the luggage. they were seized. the man was released. a baltimore county police officer is involved in a crash trying to make a traffic stop. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene at route 40 and 68th street in rose dale. the officer's car crashed in to a transit van. the drive was trapped. the officer wasn't seriously hurt. the vehicle pursued left the scene. cooler today but above normal. outside now it's sunny with a few clouds. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob has the updated weather. >> anything is cooler than 74, which is what he had yesterday. it got up to 57.

police in fort lauderdale released new video of a beating inside a gas station in hopes of finding a person responsible. the suspect tells the victim to back up and begins hitting him. the man kept throwing punches . after beating him in to a corner, the attacker walks out, the victim suffered a chipped tooth as well as cuts and some bruises. some more dramatic video this time near pompano, florida beach, three homeless men helped put a criminal behind bars. police were called to a mcdonald's after a man was caught trying to steal another man's backpack. a deputy tried to handcuff him but the suspect reacted violently, three homeless men jumped in to subdue the man. the suspect was taken to jail where he is held without bond.

sometimes it takes help to cross the finish line in a race. that's what students at a baltimore bear school will get when they race this weekend. gigi barnett reports, it isn't the first time students teamed up with athletes to win. at the bear school in west baltimore, it's easy to root for the runners and forget about the wheelchairs along the wall. it's about crossing the finish line here, bear students plan to run in another race this weekend, the shamrock 5k. >> it's fun to be out there to be a part of it. >> reporter: through the help of athletes serving athletes, david started the group 6 years ago, since then, he is partnered with several schools for special needs students to get them racing. >> it takes a lot of work to get an athlete like james across the finish line. >> reporter: one of the students is 13-year-old james

adding 227,000 jobs in february. the unemployment rate stayed at 8-point be% as workers who had given up hope started searching for jobs again. the positive trend could help president obama's reelection campaign. visiting a manufacturing plant in virginia, he said the economy is getting stronger. >> our job now is to keep this economic engine churning, we can't go back to the same policies that got us in to this mess. >> reporter: wall street liked the job numbers too, when americans are working they spend more money, which powers the economy. >> the number being positive , the market will take any positive data point. >> reporter: hiring last month was broad based from manufactureing to health care to food services. inside the job fair, employers are looking for candidates with a drive to succeed.
