counties, to your neighborhood, now it's complete could, it's wjz, maryland's news station. >> app afghan shooting spree, 16 civilians are dead after an american soldier goes on a rampage. >> now u.s. forces hope to contain retaliation. >> good afternoon, i am don scott. >> i am jessica kartalija. >> here is what people are talking about today, the taliban fighters are vowing revenge after a u.s. soldier kills more than a dozen people in a shooting rampage in southern afghanistan. here is danielle nottingham with the latest for wjz. >> reporter: afghan security forces stood guard on the streets of kandahar, concerned about retaliation for a u.s. soldier's shooting rampage. u.s. officials took an army staff sergeant into custody after he reportedly left his base around 3:00 in the morning sunday and walked to two nearby villages then went house-to- house shooting civilians.

afghan officials say 16 people died in all. three of them were women, nine were children. he dragged the boys by their hair and shot them in the mouth this woman said. other witnesses say after the killings the shooter set the bodies on fire. >> those family members will demand revenge. they have to have it for the sake of their honor, for the sake of their families, for the sake of themselves. >> afghan president karzai called the killings unforgivable. the president promised him a full investigation and those responsible will be accountable. the pentagon has not released the suspect's name but we have learned he was assigned to a special forces unit on what is called a village stabilization operation where troops develop closer ties with local leaders. this was the suspect's first tour in afghanistan. but he served three tours in iraq. he was based at fort lewis in

washington state. at the white house danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> some of you will recall the serial sniper john allen muhammad was also stationed at fort lewis. he was executed in 2009 for killing 10 people. >> the university of maryland college park avoids what could have been a tragic day on campus after a student there threatens a mass shooting, that student is now in custody. andrea fujii has the latest on this investigation. >> reporter: campus police arrested 19-year-old alexander song of howard county after he wrote on line i will be on a shooting rampage tomorrow on campus. hopefully i kill enough people to make it to national news. stay away from the mall tomorrow at 1:30. university of maryland department of public safety arrested song on sunday and he was taken to an area hospital for a mental evaluation. campus police worked through the night alerting students of the threat. the police chief released a

statement saying the incident was taken extremely seriously and all efforts were put forth to bring a speedy and save resolution, the website describes song as a member of a campus research program and scheduled to graduate in 2014. >> andrea thank you. school officials say song has so far only been charged with a misdemeanor. >> a baltimore city police officer is suspended after being accused of theft. ron matz has the latest. >> good afternoon. believe it or not this all stems from a trip to the grocery, investigators say her daughter is a cashier at the food depo and she undercharged her mom for groceries. a security guard from the store noticed the cashier incorrectly entering prices and turned her in. early was only charged 100 dollars when her bill should have been more than 400. she has been charged with

>> reporter: rick santorum is spending time in mississippi. the other state where they will head to the polls. a new pole shows he leads the poll with 34% supporting him. romney trails just behind with 30%. santorum's lead is within the pole's margin of error. newt gingrich and ron paul are still far behind. but the poll also shows most republican voters, 73%, expect romney will win the nomination. >> this primary is very very important. >> tomorrow's primaries are critical for gingrich, who is resisting calls to drop out of the race. >> at some point it becomes irrelevant whether he is in the race, i think this race is going to become a two person race. >> gingrich maintains he will pull out wins in the south. >> i represent the regan tradition of large ideas, he represents being a team player on a washington team. >> santorum has momentum with a win in kansas over the weekend. >> i like grits. >> but he still lags behind

former penn state defensive coordinator jerry sandusky will be the topic of a pretrial hearing today, a judge will decide how much information prosecutors have to share with his attorneys before his trial on child sex abuse charges, the

68-year-old is facing 52 criminal counts and is on home confinement until his trial in mid-may. two people are dead, including a student after a school bus crashes in indianapolis. it happened just before 8:00 this morning. police say the bus hit a pilar under a railroad bridge. as many as 50 students ages 5- 16 were on that bus. the driver of the bus, along with one student was killed. two other students are critically injured. >> i am sure you have noticed more money coming out of your pocket at the pump. according to the survey the average cost of a gallon of regular gas is up 12 cents in the past two weeks and averages 3.81 a gallon nationwide. here in maryland expect to pay a penny less than that, an average of 3.80 per gallon, up 10 cents from a week ago and up a quarter from this same time last year. >> movie star and human rights activist george clooney is

kind of weather it is only getting better. when we show you the five-day- forecast. here is where we are right now, 63 in baltimore. look at all of these 60s, it is cooler along the water, still in the 50s, water temperatures in the 40s so it is going to take time to warm up, otherwise look at all these 60s. a southwest wind in effect is going to continue to bring warm air our way. take a look west, where this is coming from, 60 already in chicago. it is 68 in memphis and that is the air moving in our direction, there is a front that will move through before we tap into another round of warmth but even when that goes through the whole jet stream is way up north like we see in the summer so that is going to keep this warmth in our area. here is how it looks, here is that storm that is going to weaken as it moves our way and is moving off north so we will clipped with a chance for showers tonight and tomorrow and maybe a thunderstorm tomorrow but that gets out of here and brings warmer air our

in today's wjz health watch, springing forward might be bad for your health. a professor at the university of alabama at birmingham says the monday and tuesday after changing the clocks could actually be dangerous.
