. inciting fear of a new wave of anti-american hostility in afghanistan. >> here's what people are talking about. >> the taliban is vowing revenge. a u.s. soldier allegedly goes house to house killing a dozen afghan citizens, including women and children. donnial nottingham reports from the white house. >> reporter: on the streets of kandahar afghan military forces are on guard. the taliban is vowing revenge for sunday's deadly attack. eye witnesses say an american soldier went on a shooting spree in two villages killing 16 people, including nine children and three women. villagers say the soldier then burned the bodies. i cannot speak, this local man says, before wiping away tears.

secretary of state hillary clinton offered her condolences to the victim's family. >> a full investigation is underway. a suspect is in custody and we will hold anyone found responsible fully accountability. >> reporter: the pentagon is not releasing the soldier's name, but cbs news has learned he is an army staff sergeant from for the law wis in washington state. president obama calls the shooting tragic and shocking. this is the third incident in several months that has stirred anti-american feelings. in february u.s. soldier accidentally burned copies of the koran. that sparked deadly riots. six american soldiers were killed in re-talliation. and a video surfaced in january purporting to show u.s. marines you urinating on afghan

corpses. the strategy is to turn the country over to afghan forces in 2014. at the white house danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> fort lewis found itself in the public eye recently when staff sergeant gibbs was accused of killing afghan civilians for sport. the jerry sandusky case. >> a judge heard arguments today about how much information jerry sandusky should get in advance of his trial. sandusky did not attend today's hearing. they want more information about when and where the alleged crimes occurred. also today penn state released a statement underscoring their reason for firing joe paterno. they say while paterno told superiors about the accusations he should have done more. >> jerry sandusky is accused of sexually abusing ten boys over a 15-year span. he denies the allegations.

concern on the university of maryland campus after a student threatens a mass shooting. that student is now in custody. andrea fujii has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: police say the student was unarmed when they arrested him, but they believe this was a serious threat. campus police arrested 19-year- old alexander song of howard county after he wrote i don't know nine i will be on a shooting rampage tomorrow on campus. hopefully i kill enough people to make it to national news. stay way way from the mall at 1:30. he was arrested on sunday and he was taken to an area hospital for a mental evaluation. campus police worked through the night, alerting students of the threat. the police chief released a statement saying the incident was taken extremely seriously and all efforts were put forth to bring a speedy and safe resolution. the university website describes song as a member of the campus research program. he was scheduled to graduate in

weakening in our direction and lifting to the north of us. what you are seeing down here is what can move our way tonight into tomorrow. aness cha for a couple of showers and maybe even a thunderstorm. here is the other big story going on. with that high off to the east and that front approaching it's pump up some big warmth our way. look at temperatures. 71 degrees if baltimore right now. there are multiple 70s across the state. cooler along the water in ocean city. and there is more where this came from. we will have that coming up. if you smoke while driving and you have young children in the car you soon could be forced to put out that cigarette. a debate on a vehicle smoking ban continues today in annapolis. the bill makes smoking in a moving vehicle with a child under eight years of age illegal. lawmakers are expected to make more amendments to the bill. the focus of campaign 2012 is alabama and mississippi. tomorrow voters will go to the poles to choose their gop candidate for president. it's a critical day for newt

gingrich's campaign. >> reporter: rick santorum is downplaying expectation the day before alabama anonymous miss -- alabama and mississippi hold their primaries. >> spending time here before we did. >> reporter: he is still making a last-minute push for a campaign appearance in both states. mitt romney, who turns 65 today, is hoping the south will deliver a birthday gift. >> i just want to say thanks to you for giving me this birthday present. i am hoping to unwrap it tomorrow. >> reporter: he made a brief top in mobile, alabama before taking time off from the campaign trail to celebrate his birthday. a new cbs news "new york times" poll shows republican primary voters nationwide pick santorum over romney by a small margin. but 73% of those polled say romney will be the eventual nominee. only 10% show santorum. newt gingrich and ron paul trail even further behind. the primaries are critical for

a school bus clipped a bridge in indiana, killing the driver and one student. the bus was carrying students to an indianapolis school when it crashed before 8 this morning. one side of the bus was peeled back in the collision. at least eight other children were also injured. two critically. the pavement was wet but the cause of the accident is under investigation. a residential street looks like a demolition derby in one pennsylvania town. dozens of people in the mount washington, pennsylvania neighborhood awake to find their cars smashed. police say a drunk driver sped down the street this morning slamming into one car and another. no one was injured. in today's health watch you know drinking sweet drinks can lead to obesity. in tonight's washington wizard health watch a new study finds it could hurt your heart. randall pinkston reports for wjz. >> reporter: 60-year-old morris mcwilliams knew it was time to

see his doctor when he began having chest pains. he was diagnosed with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. his doctor told him to change his diet. especially what he drank. >> fruit drinks. sodas. combination of both. >> reporter: a new study finds that for men drinking just one 12-ounce sugar sweetened beverage a day could increase the risk of heart disease by 20%. >> wow. that's just kind of like i was a heart attack waiting to happen. >> reporter: harvard school of public heaven researchers followed more than 42,000 men between 40 and 75 years of age. for 20 years they kept careful records of their food intake. >> sugar sweetened beverages increases inflammation. and inflammation might be the culprit of what leads to heart disease. >> reporter: you don't have to eliminate all sugar drinks. the study found less frequent consumption, anywhere from two drinks a month to as many as

two a week, did not increase the risk of heart disease. neither did having artificially sweetened beverages. mcwilliams lost more than 30 pounds in four months by eliminating sugar drinks and eating less. >> i am able to eat and enjoy foods that i'm eating. >> reporter: his doctor says if he adds regular exercise to his new life tile his health will improve even more. randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> heart disease is the number one killer of membership and women in the united states. can wall street get the week off on the right foot? well, the dow is up but the other markets are down. here is a look. the dow is up 38. s&p down a fraction. nasdaq off 5. let's go to new york with the money watch update. >> reporter: greece has wrapped up the biggest debt write down in history.

it swapped privately held bonds with new ones worth less than half the original value. it paves the way for greece to receive a second bailout from european leadersing. bankruptcy is still a possibility. the obama administration is releasing a blueprint for states to sign up millions of uninsured americans for medical coverage through the president's health care law. starting january 1, 2014, millions will be able to buy health insurance through new state-based markets called exchanges. high gas prices have more americans opting for the train or bus. new figures show ridership on mass transit is at the highest left in at least three years. the last time this many people rode mass transit was 2008 when gas prices topped a record $4 nationwide. the national average right now $3.81 a gallon. that's a record for this time of year. and if you preorder the new ipad you will have to wait a

we are still in winter. and look where we topped out today. we thought we'd get into the upper 60s. we made it to the 70s. 71 degrees is where we topped out for the high. remember with the sunshine later in the die we have a opportunity for a couple extra degrees in the atmosphere there. the average is 52. so we're about 20 degrees above average and that's we are going to be most of the week. 71 in baltimore. 73 in cumberland and even 71 degrees in d.c. now, if you are immediately along the water it is a little cool. >> the bay temp in the 40s. the ocean very cool this time of year. now, compared to yesterday at this time we're about five to ten degrees warm he. the warm-up that began yesterday continues today and it's going to continue once again tomorrow with these southerly winds. now, there is a lot of warm air over there. look at that. 60 degrees in bismarck right now. we are going to continue to pull that in our direction. before we get into our next round of warmer air we've got a front to deal with. but overall even with the front coming through the pattern this

week is far off to the north. with it so far to the north we are allowed to bask in that warmth. this is a summertime pattern that we're going to benefit from this last week of winter. here is the next front moving in our direction. it's a big one farther to the west but it will weaken as it moves our way. chance for a couple of showers tonight into tomorrow as all of this sort of skirts our area from the south. but the thing is this storm is only going to pass by and then move off to the northeast. so it keeps us in the warm air and then we continue to build on that warm air for the middle part of the week. wait until you see some of these numbers. on the waters with this going on we have small craft advisories in effect this afternoon. bay temp is still 46 degrees. that's why if you are in annapolis or a coastal town it's a little cooler this afternoon. tonight we are only down to 50 degrees. our average high is 52. then tomorrow hans for a couple of showers -- chance for a couple showers or thunderstorms. look at that temperature.

it is 4:29. 71 degrees. partly sunny. hello. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i am denise koch. >> i am vic carter. here is what people are talking about. >> still coping with the cost. japan marks the one year anniversary of the deadly quake and tsunami. japanese workers are finding unique ways to boost the economy. >> reporter: the traditional rice line is ready. but this year every step on the production line was a challenge. an earthquake and tsunami

damaged several factories. sales dropped. people didn't feel like celebrating. a fourth generation brewer found themselves giving away bottles. but after a while a resilient community spirit kicked in. orders started coming in from all over japan. people wanted to save their traditional industry. the machines you hear working were paralyzed for two months during the earthquake at this brewery. but things are slightly picking up here and the workers tell us that they think it's a good sign for the japanese economy. they even produced a special batch of sake to mark the first anniversary of the quake. he says it is the motor that will rebuild this area. other industries are banking on post-earthquake solidarity, too. special sections for products made in the tsunami hit communities. he wants people to wear this

support japan message. he is giving all the money from these t-shirts to earthquake victims. people are dining out once again. he says if we help each other, we will make it. they may not be ready to toast in celebration yet, but the sake is flowing again. >> now, small business owners in japan say they are relying on that community spirit to stay afloat because the government has been too slow in providing help. a jetblue flight has a passenger on a flight that may have posed a bomb flight. it landed this afternoon in buffalo. the 83 passengers on board were only told the flight was being diverted. a woman passenger was taken off the plane and questioned. the fbi believes now it was part of a domestic dispute.

a short time ago the fbi decided not to charge the passenger who was removed from the plane. well, the trip started off as normal, but as passengers settled in on a flight from dallas to chicago the drama began. andrea reports. >> reporter: a blood curdling scream. >> they had to subdue her. there were five people holding her down. oh, yeah, we were frightened. >> reporter: those on board say the woman appeared to have a medical condition. >> she was in a manic state. she mentioned things about being bipolar. >> reporter: unless an employee's psychological issue is obvious, the airline may be

unaware. aviation experts say the faa doesn't require any psychological testing. even for flight attendant who can deal with stressful situations in the air. >> number one reason they are there is for safety. >> reporter: do you think they should be going through physicals and psychologicals? >> i think psychological because they have a pretty serious responsibility. >> reporter: and with american airlines in bankruptcy negotiations, the stress these employees are under may only be growing. >> the conversation between american employees is 90% what's going to happen to me? what's going to happen to the company? >> she wasn't too excited about what was happening with american airlines. that was my first thought. >> no criminal charges will be filed against the flight attendant. another day of violence as the palestinians condition their airborne attack on israel. at least 200 rockets have landed in southern israel killing more than 20 people. the violence started last week when the israeli airforce targeted the leader of a agree.

children and steps are often a dangerous combination. mary with more. >> reporter: according to a new report in pediatrics, a young child is treated for a stair- related your every six months the. information gathered by the national electronic surveillance system, researchers found more than 900,000 children under the age of five were treated for injuries caused by stairs. a quarter of those injuries were children less than a year old who were being carried by their parents. experts recommend installing stair gates and railings if you don't have them already. it's a nice day to go for a walk with your fury friend or your regular friend. wjz found people enjoying the spring-like weather in annapolis. a few soaking up the sun on the sail boats. some clouds are moving into the area. wjz has weather and traffic. bob is here with the updated numbers. >> it was a gorgeous afternoon once again. spring as arrived much earlier

about ten days to two weeks ahead. we're getting reports already of deer ticks, mosquitoes, all those guys we love to hate are active right now. >> reporter: which means taking the usual precautions earlier than usual. ticks can pass on serious infections like lyme disease and mosquitoes west nile. the advice for people. >> they have to have due diligence right now because these guys are active in the forest. >> reporter: of course, some insects have been active all winter sharing the warmth inside our homes. but because they are cold blooded it takes warmer temperatures to get them up and moving outside. and this past winter that had everyone talking. >> amazing. it's beautiful. it was like springtime out here. >> reporter: made it easier for insects to survive. while insects are with us earlier than usual there is also another wildcard at play. >> insects like aphids or spider mites or our friend the stink bug, if they get an early jump on the season as they will

a wrong-way crash leaves two people dead in ohio. police say this red car was driving down the wrong side of a road when it hit a moving truck to toledo. both people in the car were killed. the truck driver were rushed to the moment. the extent of injuries not clear. the man accused of driving his suv on the runway at philadelphia enter is national airport faces federal charges. last week this man drove thinks sport utility -- his sport utility vehicle through a fence and sped across two-run ways at the airport. he faces federal charges for damaging the facility and endangering safety. despite the u.n. as best efforts to negotiate, the fighting continues. >> reporter: kofe auman med

okay? >> there is no evidence that this was intentional on his part i intentional or not , fox is charged with murder causing death by an explosive device and child endangerment for the march 5th incident. >> he is entering a plea of not guilty. >> reporter: in his arraignment the judge ordered a $3.5 million bail set citing his previous felony convictions. fox and his friends were admittedly drinking prior to the incident and on the 911 call you can her a distrout fox trying to come to terms with what just occurred. >> well, in another story a face full of trash breaks a georgia woman's fall when she slips into a garbage compactor. the woman was trying to fish her cellphone out of the trash shoot at her apartment complex when she fell face first into the compactor. she was stuck for two hours before firefighters were able to get her out. a massive fire rips through

would bloom april 15, 20th. i have seen it blooming all over the place because it's been so warm all winter long. now with these temperatures 20 degrees above normal things are a month or more ahead of time. trees are blooming all over the place. let's look at temps and conditions right now. it's still at 71, which is pretty much going to be your high because remember our sun now is not going down until after seven. so we are at the peak heat of the day now. 71 degrees. humidity is way down. it's a very dry air mass. only 32% humidity. even though there is some showers in the west, it's going to take a lot to moisten up this atmosphere. the chances of a shower are slim. maybe a shower overnight, maybe a shower tomorrow but it will be isolated. southwest winds at 9. barometer holding steady. they do have some rain in oakland. they are down to 50 because of that. 72, however, 50 miles to the east in the valley at 72.

57 ocean city. still 71 over in washington. now, locally temperatures running, as i said, anywhere close to the water it's cooler of course because the bay temperature is in the 40s. still 10, 15, 20 degrees above normal this time of year. saturday was a pretty chilly day. only in the 40s as that high moved off east coast. the winds right back to the south and southwest. that's what brought in this warm air. you see this low pressure spinning right over iowa? it has shower activity i don't see any snowflakes at all on this particular system. even up across northern minnesota it's mild enough for showers. you see some shower activity to the west and most of it, ohio, pennsylvania is going to pass to the northwest. we may get clipped by a few showers tonight. again tomorrow maybe a shower or rumble of thunder in a couple of spots but i am not expecting a whole lot of rain out of this. essentially it's going to stay warm because there is no cold

air moving into the united states. once this high sets up again we will see mild temperatures. pretty much 70s all week long. by the end of the week we may start seeing some easterly winds and that will dropping temperatures and increase our chance of scattered showers. sunrise, all right, 7:20. yeah. so if your kids is taking the bus in the morning. still dark. look at that. 7:12 p.m. tonight sunday sets. pretty amazing. tonight mostly cloudy and mild. 50 degrees. a few showers possible overnight. a shower, maybe a rumble of thunder in a couple of spots. look at that temperature tomorrow at 76 degrees. normal high at 52 degrees tomorrow. so these temperatures once again are more like may than march. and that's why it's been so crazy out there. the jetstream has been so far north in canada. none of these air masses from
