executive leopold. adam. >> reporter: excuse me kai the protest here was rather small but definitely to the point. about a dozen protestors stand outside the anne arundel county execs office with a simple message. >> he should resign. >> reporter: the group outraged that john leopold misused his office, using officers to spy on his lovers and political opponents. >> all the other countystates around us when they go to come here to do business in annapolis, are they going to take him serious? or going to bring one of their nice little pretty girls down with them and offer him a ride to a parking lot? >> let me say this there are a lot of factors that haven't come out yet. >> reporter: days ago leeped told wjz he will not resign >> are you going to balance county executive with the time that will be your defense. >> this is a prosecution

investigation going on for over a year we have been balancing it quite well over the past year. >> reporter: police and fire unions called for leopold to step down. >> are you concerned with how the county executive handled this situation >> he hasn't handled it he ignored it. >> reporter: this protestor feels it is an embarrassment to the county. >> we should get a tent over it. >> reporter: for the most part the county executive has kept up its public schedule since this scandal first broke county council meeting tonight for their first official meeting since all of this came out publicly reporting live in anne arundel county, adam mays wjz eyewitness news. the case is expected to go to court this summer. a scare in college park's campus as a university of maryland student allegedly threatens to open fire wjz is live at university of maryland. mike hogan is there and spent the day talking to students

about this case. >> reporter: police did not immediately alert students because they did not want to tip off the suspect fearing an immediate and dangerous reaction. police worked quickly to pain stakingly track university of maryland student, alexandre song before threats could become reality from anonymous postings he made online including i will be on a shooting rampage tomorrow on campus stay away from the mall at 1:30 p.m.hopefully i kill enough people to make it to national news. daniel douglass friend alerted police. >> very like scared about it, and just knew he had to bring something to the attention of the authorities. we have no reason to believe mr. song was acting in concert with anyone he was acting alone. >> reporter: authorities saw it as no joke they traced song through the internet and then campus. >> this was no easy feet to balance this set up, came back

on to campus, he was followed not only through our extensive camera network. >> song lives here in fulton, howard county we were unsuccessful reaching his family but one neighbor told us she is satisfied with the way the school handled the incident. song is currently under going a psychiatric evaluation. police say he told their officers a week ago. >> there was nothing that lead us to believe he was a threat to himself or others. it is scary. >> sounds like an isolated incident i think they took the proper measures i definitely didn't feel any less safe walking through campus today. >> police say song was distraught when they arrested him he is charged with a misdemeanour, disturbing the order on campus that carries up to 6 months in jail, and $2,500

revenge after a u.s. soldier is suspected of going house to house killing a dozen afghan citizens, killing women and children. >> reporter: on the streets of kandahar afghan military forces are on guard, the taliban is vowing revenge for sunday's deadly attack. eyewitnesses say an american soldier went on a shooting spree in two villages, killing 16 people including 9 children and 3 women. villagers say the soldier burned the bodies. i cannot speak this local man says before wiping away tears. secretary of state hillary clinton offered her condolences to the victims families. a full investigation is under way a suspect is in custody, and we will hold anyone found responsible fully accountable. >> reporter: the pentagon is not releasing the soldiers name but cbs news learned he is an army staff sergeant from fort

marshall airport, captain mike. >> reporter: hello mary we are indeed over bwi airport about 20 minutes ago a delta flight landed at bwi, declaring an emergency with smoke in the cockpit area of the jet, they apparently landed at bwi safely, but they had the aircraft checked out, while out on the taxi way, and then they brought the aircraft into the gate, there is no word on any injuries onboard the aircraft, that is routine for pilots to declare an emergency landing for any type of smoke in the cockpit of the airplane firefighters are still walking around the outside of the airplane no word on whether the faa or ntsb will be involved back to you on tv hill. >> thank you. just a gorgeous day today, hopefully you got to enjoy it like some people in annapolis did today, it is not technically spring yet but

warm is it but how long it has been so warm is the biggest one of all we take you back from december, through february, meteorological winter as we call it the seventh warmest on record for our average highs they are 6 degrees above average during that same stretch as we transfer over into march we continue this warm weather trend because so far this month, we are averaging about 8 degrees above normal for our high, and our actual average high still in the 50s so that is what we have going on right now the warm weather will continue, we are going to crank it up a few notches we will have that shortly. >> thanks bernadette. >> march madness on loyola university madness their men's basketball team is gearing up, wjz is live with complete coverage of the greyhounds, jessica is talking to students first mark has more on what the team is saying hi mark. >> reporter: how you doing kai.

this is a baltimore school with a core of players from this city and a growing fan base that includes big time baltimore business men like kevin of under armor and ravens owner steve bashadi they prepare to take on big time ohio state and the loyola greyhounds embrace their status as under dogs. a spirited practice to prepare for their first ncaa tournament in nearly two decades. coach and his loyola greyhounds face ohio state in pittsburgh. they know they are not expected to beat the big boys from the big 10 conference. >> nine out of ten times we will lose this game but we have a chance they are a little tired coming off the big 10 thing my wife is in good spirits we will have a lot of pittsburgh fans there, and once they find out i am from ravens

greyhounds take on number 2 ohio state in pittsburgh. >> i like thursday at 9:50 p.m. we will be on everyone in the country. joining the team, 100 students will be taking the road trip to pittsburgh on thursday. >> i think it will be insane, i think that it will be a bus full of very pumped up kids, at loyola. >> just the opportunity to play such a big school they are so well known, is extremely exciting. >> reporter: it is the greyhounds first trip to the ncaa tournament since 1994. >> very excited for the guys i know they worked so hard for this so exciting to see some school spirit at loyola very exciting. >> reporter: now 600 students tried to win those tickets, they only are allowing 100 to take the buses up to pittsburgh so we asked some of the other students what their plans are for the game of course they say they will head out to the bars

get it. >> how personally do you take some of this what kind of priority do you make? >> whether it is a horrible tragedy like this, we are talking to the commander every day, getting updates where are you with the investigation, what specific work needs to be done. he knows the allegations against jus one officer can harm the department's credibility. we recognize the hit the police department takes i have to remind people right now in baltimore as i am speaking when they watch this on the news, there are really brave heroic men and women out there responding to calls risking their lives for people they don't know and really trying to do the very best job they can for baltimore. >> reporter: wjz learned the officer in question did have a suspension hearing today, and per the department's policy that officer has been suspended with pay during this entire investigation and it is important to point out the

abuse scandal at penn state university and why legendary coach joe paterno was fired. dick. the board of trustees is citing a failure of leadership why they fired the late paterno he didn't take his knowledge of the sex abuse allegations to the proper authorities paterno told the grand jury a graduate assistant informed them he fulfilled his legal duty reporting the information to the athletic director but didn't call police back to you. thank you, the trustees said paterno should have gone beyond his minimal legal duties. at least two are dead after a school bus crash in indiana t front of the bus crashed into a support pillar for a bridge killing the driver and one child at least a dozen others were hurt, two critically, the students on the bus are between 5 and 16 years old, no word yet on what caused the crash. dozens of car owners in

>> as warm winter gives way to an early spring it is not just flowers popping up it is bugs. the good, the bad and the ugly of the insect world are all up early. >> it feels like spring to a lot of plants, and it is despite what the calendar says. >> we are probably 10 days to 2 weeks ahead getting reports already of deer tickets, mosquitoes, all those guys we love to hate are active right now. >> reporter: which means taking the usual precaution earlier than usual. tickets can pass on serious infections like lime disease and mosquitoes that get us scratching are a vector for west nile. >> people have to be due diligence. >> reporter: some insects have been active all winter sharing
