at 1:30, hopefully i kill enough people to make it to national news. daniel douglas' friend immediately alerted police. >> he was very scared about it and knew he had to bring something to the attention of the authorities. >> we have no reason to believe that song was acting in concert with anyone. he was acting alone. >> reporter: authorities saw it as no joke. they traced him through the internet and then to campus. >> this was no easy feat. surveillance was set up. when mr. song's vehicle came back on campus, it was followed through our extensive camera network and plain clothes officers. >> reporter: his roommate told authorities he's been stressed. police say he told their officers the same thing one week ago after they responded to a disturbance at his dorm. >> i mean, it's scary.

you hear about it happening around schools across the country. >> reporter: he is charged with a misdemeanor, that carries up to $2500 in fines and six months behind bars. >> police tell wjz they did not immediately alert students of the threat because they didn't want to tip off the suspect. the smell of smoke grounds a plane. the delta flight had just taken off when passengers noticed a smell. firefighters met the plane on the runway, but they did not find any flames. outrage in afghanistan after an american shooting rampage that killed 16 villages. we have more on the increased security risk. >> reporter: on the streets,

afghan military forces are on guard. the taliban is vowing revenge for sunday's deadly attack. eyewitnesses say an american soldier went on a shooting spree in two villages killing 16 people, including 9 children and three women. i cannot speak, this local man says, before wiping away tears. >> what happened this weekend is heartbreaking and tragic, and i expressed directly how the american people feel any time innocent civilians, especially children are killed. >> reporter: the soldier is in u.s. custody. the pentagon is not releasing his name, but cbs news has learned he's a 38-year-old army staff sergeant, a veteran of four tours in the middle east. president obama calls the shooting tragic and shocking. this is the third incident in several months that has stirred anti-american feelings.

executive moves forward. dennis sweeney had to hear the tawdry charges. he presided over the corruption case for former baltimore mayor sheila dixon. >> we going from watergate. >> reporter: protesters gathered outside the county government building to send a clear message to the executive. >> there are so many jaw-dropping allegations, i don't even know which one you should start with. >> reporter: an indictment alleges he used his security detail to drive him to sexual encounters in public parkings. >> when they come here to do business, are they going to take him serious? >> reporter: the county executive has no plans to resign and will fight these charges against him. >> once the citizens hear both sides of the story, they'll have

a complete and full understanding of this case. >> reporter: police and fire unions have called on liepold and their own leaders to step down. the county executive looks forward to his day in court. and we may soon know more about when that day will be. lawyers are expected to meet with the judge to set a time line for the case. reporting live for wjz eyewitness news. >> charged with four counts of misconduct. a teacher wants his job back after being cleared in a sex scandal involving a student. prosecutors accused him of having sex with a 16-year-old girl he coached on the cross county team. they dropped the charges because of the loophole in the law. it says it's not illegal for part-time school workers to have sex with the student if the student is at least age 16. >> this never should have

happened. i committed no crime. i want to get back and do what i've always done. i hope i get that chance. >> he wouldn't say if he had a sexual relationship with the teen. he's been suspended since his arrest last month. promising justice after one of his officers is caught up in a teenager's death investigation. >> when we act in this case, we're going to be ready to ensure that justice is done. i think that's what people want. >> officer john ward is suspended while police investigate his role in the death of 13-year-old monai turnage. the rifle used to kill her was found in ward's car. two of her friends are accused of shooting her and hiding her body. people are finding other ways to get around in maryland and across the country. wjz is live and we have a closer look at the trend here at home. >> reporter: like many

americans, baltimore and marylanders are using public transportation to save money wherever they can. the numbers are out about public transportation in america and they're nothing short of jaw dropping. how often do you use public transportation? >> every day. >> reporter: americans took 1,000th 3 billion trips on public transportation in 2011. the second highest total since 1957. light rail, the train, subway, or bus are cost-saving options consumers are using in growing numbers. in maryland, ridership of public transportation is up 10%. >> we think it's a testament to the job we're doing and trying to provide better service but also the economy playing a factor. >> reporter: riding public transportation comes with its own cost. the u.s. senate is scheduled to vote on a $109 billion

it's 58 degrees and cloudy. the complete forecast is coming up. look at this massive shark feeding frenzy. about 50 sharks chowed down on bait fish and small tuna. beaches surrounding the area were closed as a precaution. seeing this many sharks close to shore is very unusual. it's a deadly scene when a school bus crashes into a bridge. the bus driver and a 5-year-old were killed this morning. rescue crews pulled about 50 trapped children from the vehicle, inclouding one stuck under the front wheel. a teenager in georgia falls down a garbage chute trying to

retrieve her cell phone. she dentally dropped her phone into the trash chute at her apartment. as she tried reaching with her hand, when she leaned in, she fell several feet. she was stuck for over two hours before firefighters rescued her. she's lucky she didn't fall down to the come factor. humiliated for getting bad grades. forced him to standout side with a sign around his neck at. the boy received three fs and is known as the class clown. his parents have tried everything to improve his behavior, and this is their last resort. this year's warm winter means bugs are coming earlier. early warnings have been issued for mosquitoes and ticks that can carry lime disease. the insects may not enjoy the warm weather for long. instead of hibernating, they're eating the food they've stored up for winter. many are expected to starve. >> let's start they don't start

we have the fan sports report. >> talking about march madness and football is money madness. the bidding begins 4:00 tomorrow afternoon and the ravens have about $11 million in salary cap money to spend. a chunk of that could go to one of their own free agents, ben grubbs who can negotiate with other teams if the ravens don't lock him up. web gets a first-round tender as a restricted free agent. if any other team wants to sign webb, the ravens have a right to match the offer. they also gave a second-round tender to d-back carey williams. college basketball, march madness tipping off this week. the greyhounds preparing for their first-round match up against ohio state in pittsburgh thursday night. the hounds are in the tournament for the first time in 18 years. the women at the university of

welcome back. so, coach, what is that can't miss first round matchup that people have to tune in for? >> the one i'm looking at is virginia and florida. an interesting dynamic and different styles of play and with florida you have irving walker who is 5'7" point guard. and florida has the most amazing three-pointers in the country they will attack from the perimeter and virginia will try wear you down with great offense. so i think that's a great matchup. >> and looking down the road in the west bracket, is what the marquee matchup? number one seed michigan state versus number two seed missouri or another matchup? >> that could be the way it plays out. i would love to see missouri and louisville. the speed of that game and number of possessions in that game will be incredible. two teams that push the ball up the floor and go after each other. that will be fun to watch. >> and for more coverage check out the verizon 4glte tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
