rick santorum a dixieland sweep. santorum won in alabama and mississippi primaries. it was a tight three-way race in both states. newt gingrich who pinned his hopes on a southern resurgence, came in a close second. mitt romney was third in both contests but maintains a huge lead in delegates. duarte geraldino is in washington with details on all of this. good morning. >> good morning, betty. mitt romney's performance exposes an achilles heel in his campaign. rick santorum is trying to capitalize on that weakness. and gingrich is trying to show that he is still a viable contender. rick santorum pulled off a southern sweep tuesday. >> we did it again. >> he told supporters in louisiana they'll keep his momentum going. >> next week, we'll come back here and we expect a huge win. >> santorum won mississippi and alabama tuesday night with the help of conservative voters and women. the former pennsylvania senator

says the results will reshape the republican field. >> santorum and newt gingrich continue to split the conservative vote. despite losing, the former speaker said he has no plans to drop out and this race is far from over. >> one of the things tonight proved is that the elite media's effort to convince the nation that mitt romney is inevitable just collapsed. >> alabama and mississippi allocate their delegates proportionally. gingrich, santorum and mitt romney all added to their totals, but romney still holds a significant lead. romney lost both states yesterday. partly because he wasn't able to rally the conservative base. the former massachusetts governor's already looking ahead to saturday's caucuses. he rallied supporters in missouri yesterday afternoon. >> you got saturday, you're going to come together for a caucus. i need to vote for me. >> he will spend the day in new

york building a war chest for what could be a very long primary battle. political analysts are predicting he'll fare better in illinois in an upcoming contest. as we've seen so far from this race, nothing seems to turn out as predicted. betty? >> so true. thank you. alabama and mississippi are two of the most conservative states in the country. and mitt romney continues to have trouble connecting with conservative voters. exit polls found 50% of alabama voters believed romney's position on issues was not conservative enough. meanwhile, half of mississippi voters who cast a ballot for santorum said they'd be dissatisfied if romney was the republican nominee. and more than half of mississippi voters said rick santorum's conservative credentials were just about right. in other political news, as expected, the afl-cio says it is endorsing president obama for a second term. the union says it will mount a huge door-to-door campaign.

union leader says the labor department or labor movement doesn't agree with the president on every issue but doesn't doubt his commitment to america's workers. overseas, dozens were killed when a bus slammed into a tunnel wall in the swiss alps. the bus was headed back to belgium last night. 52 people were on board returning from a ski trip. at least 28 were killed. 22 of them children. all just 12 years old. the rest have been hospitalized. the crash is under investigation. defense secretary leon panetta made an unannounced visit to afghanistan this morning. he'll meet with u.s. troops and president karzai. he'll try to contain the political fallout from the massacre of 16 afghan civilians allegedly carried out by an american soldier. the army staff sergeant accused of the killings remains in military custody. he hasn't been charged yet and the military has not identified him. but he could face the death penalty if convicted.

>> during a news conference in the white house rose garden, president obama said he was outraged by the attacks and promised a full investigation. >> i can assure the american people and the afghan people that we will follow the facts wherever they lead us. and we will make sure that anybody who was involved is held fully accountable with the full force of the law. >> but the president added that the incident would not have an impact on the withdrawal of u.s. troops from afghanistan. >> make no mistake, we have a strategy that will allow us to responsibly wind down this war. >> but the taliban is promising revenge on tuesday afghan officials visiting the scene of the massacre came under attack. taliban fighters opened fire on the delegation, included two brothers of afghanistan's president. one afghan soldier was killed. in eastern afghanistan, students staged the first

large-scale protest of the killings. the incident is the latest stumble for the united states in afghanistan. six americans were killed last month after the koran was burned at a u.s. military base. and in january, a video surfaced showing what appeared to be american troops urinating on the corpses of dead enemy fighters. >> we seem to get tested almost every other day with challenges that test our leadership. >> and there is new information about the soldier accused of sunday's shooting spree. after it was discovered that he walked off the base, a search party was organized and he was found crawling through an orchard as if to sneak back on to the base. military investigators are also looking into the possibility that he was under the influence of alcohol. on the cbs "moneywatch," a banner day on wall street and encyclopedia closes the book on its printed edition. i remember having those. ashley morrison in new york

with more. good morning, betty. a big day for the asian market. the nikkei jumped more than 1.5%. hong kong's hang seng inched up a fraction. >> wall street had the strongest day of 2012. the dow posted a 217 point gain while the nasdaq added 56 points to finish at its highest level since 2000. it's the first time in history that the dow finished above 13,000 and the nasdaq closed above 3,000. the wall street rally was helped by news that 15 of the nation's biggest banks passed the federal reserve's stress test. the test determines whether banks can survive an economic downturn worse than the great recession. citigroup, the nation's third largest bank was one of t four institutions that did not pass. met life, sun trust and ally also failed. pretty soon, walmart will help you take your dvd collection wherever you go. the retailer announced a new service that lets you digitize your disks allowing you to stream them to your computer, smartphone or tablet.

the service begins next month. and seaking of going digital, the encyclopedia britannica will no longer be printed. the reference books were first published in scotland 244 years. since then, they've lined the shelves of classrooms all over the world. slumping sales have forced them to focus instead on digital publishing. the final 32-volume hard-cover edition is selling for just under $1400. betty, i may be old school but it makes me kind of sad. >> it does, doesn't it? i remember doing book reports using them. >> pea too me too. we're getting old indeed. coming up on the morning news, closing arguments are made in the rutgers university webcam trial and the case is in the hands of the jury. this is the "cbs morning news." a four-alarm fire forced evacuations and knocked out power to more than 20,000 residents and businesses overnight. it started during the evening rush hour. nearby hilton hotel and music school were evacuated because of the dense smoke. jurors in the new jersey webcam trial of a former rutgers university student will begin deliberations today. they must decide if it was a childish prank or a hate crime against another student who later committed suicide. randall pinkston has more. >> dharun ravi's family listened closely as the defense insisted he was acting like a kid, not a criminal when he spied on his gay roommate kissing another man. >> an 18-year-old boy, a kid, a college freshman, had an encounter that he wasn't ready for. >> in his closing argument, attorney al ban claimed he set up a webcam in his room because

he was worried tyler clementi's guest identified as m.b. might steal his ipad. >> the whole incident, not what they were doing sexually. who is this guy and why is he in the room and why am i shut out of my room? >> that information being given out was his way of covering up. he wanted people to believe that he was worried about his possessions. >> ravi is facing 15 criminal counts. the most serious charge is bias intimidation, a hate crime that could bring up to ten years behind bars. >> but ravi's attorney says there's no evidence that ravi hated gays. even after finding out ravi spied on him, clementi invited his guest an older man back to his room. he's accused of setting up the webcam to -- a day later clementi committed suicide by jumping from the george washington bridge.

here's a look at today's forecast. in some cities around the country. new york, sunny, 68. miami, partly sunny, 82. chicago, mostly sunny, 80. dallas, mostly cloudy, still 75. l.a., morning clouds, 66. time now for a check of the national forecast. rain and snow will extend from central california to the northern rockies. a new storm will bring strong winds, rain and heavy mountain snow to western washington and northwest oregon. the midwest and south will be mainly clear and dry with a few thunder showers in the ozarks and lower ohio valley. from arkansas to northern florida. the northeast will be mostly sunny. in sports, the march to the final four in new orleans is under way. who says there's no politics in baseball -- or basketball i should say. president obama took david cameron to game one last night in dayton, ohio. mississippi valley state led by 16 with five minute left. but western kentucky put on a furious charge. it was tied at 54 with 1:15 to

play. the hilltoppers finally took the lead on a three-point play with 34 seconds to go and held on for a 59-58 win. earlier the president talked march madness with cbs sports. >> everybody, including these two teams, are thinking maybe i'll be the cinderella story here. that's what makes it a great tournament. in the other first round game in dayton, iona started out looking like a cinderalla team leading byu at the half. but led by noah hartsog who scored 16 of the 23 points in the second half. the cougars staged an amazing comeback. the final byu 78, iona 72. one of the tournament's top seeds, syracuse will play without his star center. the university declared the 7 foot brazilian ineligible. it didn't say why but he missed three games because of an academic issue. earlier in the season. in nba action last night, miami at orlando. fourth period, the

alabama and mississippi primaries. newt gingrich who came in second in both contests say he is going to remain in the race for the gop nomination. but mitt romney was third in both states and he maintains a huge lead in the delegate count. in illinois, a battle is brewing between local officials and the federal government over who should pay for a small town recovering from extensive tornado damage. dean reynolds reports. >> on the day that a tornado ripped through harrisburg, illinois, governor pat quinn surveyed the damage and tried to think ahead. >> i signed the declaration, disaster declaration. we'll ask for the feds for assistance. you have to file a good application if you want federal assistance. >> state officials estimated they would need about $3 million in federal aid to help homeowners and renters. but fema's craig fugate says his agency will not send checks for damaged or destroyed homes. >> we did not find that the disaster information provided

would suggest it exceeded the state's capabilities. >> fema considered private insurance coverage in the area, alternate housing and available rental units in determining that illinois could handle the mess by itself. but when illinois learned that indiana's aid application, which claimed more than $25 million in damages from storms in the last couple of weeks, had been approved by fema, senator dick durbin and others were outraged. >> to think that these local communities are our state can take care of this is naive. >> fema said denied applications are not unprecedented. last year, minnesota's request after storms and tornadoes was also rejected. >> turning down a disaster is never easy. we know there's real people and homes damaged. this is not about the people. this is really about in looking at the impacts of the state. >> illinois is appealing the decision. its congressional delegation and governor quinn will be meeting
