landing. major changes come to the baltimore police department following the shooting death of a plainclothes officer. william orbit was gunned down by fellow officers mistaken for a gunman. the newer forms designed to prevent another such tragedy. >> reporter: just wasn't the city named this street. now the police department is taking steps to ensure no officer dies the way he did. >> footage captures the chaos. officer william in plain clothes attacked by the crowd. though officers opened fire on him. no baltimore police have issued new reforms to prevent another tragedy. >> it a profound change for the better in working to make sure the incident that took place on january 9th of last year will never ever happen again in the history of this department. >> the changes include better training and preventing plainclothes officers from

appointed by the mayor. lawyers for the soldier accused of sharing classified information with wiki weeks once the charges thrown out. bradley manning spent the day in court at fort meade. the military says he leaked hundreds of thousands of pages of classified information. the judge did not make a decision about the request. if he is convicted, he could spend the rest of his life in prison. the maryland man in prisons in cuba is begging to see his sick mother. alan gross wrote a letter to the resident asking to visit his mother suffering from an operable lung cancer. he's serving a 15-year sentence for spying. he insists he was tried to give internet access to in cuba. >> there is no information about the u.s. army soldier accused of killing 16 unarmed afghans. he's hired a high-profile seattle lawyer, and that lawyer is speaking out tonight. edward o lawrence reports for

wjz. >> reporter: attorney john henry browne says he spoke with his client once and only briefly. >> he was quiet, just wanted to confirm that i would be involved and give his love to the family. >> the client is still this unnamed u.s. staff sergeant accused in the massacre. the shooting sparked outrage in afghanistan and across the muslim world and strained already tense relationship between the u.s. and afghan government. the suspect is in military custody and his family moved to a u.s. military base for their own safety. >> that's why his name is not being revealed. i think it's a serious issue with safety. >> he served two tours in iraq and was injured with an ied. brown said the army's response to the trauma will be a focus of his attention. >> we have a soldier who has a

>> it is 52 degrees and cloudy in central maryland right now. a tornado rips through michigan turning towns upside down. rain, hail, and high winds sweep across the city of dexter leveling neighborhoods. dozens of homes completely destroyed but there's been no reports of injuries for his. of a structure crashes in switzerland killing 28 people. tonight survivors say he was driving distracted. several young survivors tell their parents they saw the driver

changing the dvd just before the accident. the driver lost control and crashed in a tunnel tuesday night. 22 children and six adults, including the driver, died. the children were on their way home from a skiing trip. a child is found alive in serious, of dozens of corpses. then trying to count the dead inside a home discovered the boy in a dark room where he'd been hiding for days. the boy's entire family is believed to have been murdered by pro- regime forces. in the past the syrian government has blamed armed gangs for such attacks. today mark onesie or -- marks 1 year since the authorized began. former illinois governor rod blagojevich reports to prison. he arrived at the angle would correctional center in colorado. before checking in, he stopped for a fast food burger preview was convicted on 18 counts of

now, today we had a pleasant but mild. 52 now. 56 in dc. they were 82 today. we only got 73. just 30 miles down the road it was 15 degrees warmer. 82 of the record. 53 and 33 is the average. 1993 blizzard. yes, we had 10-degree temperatures, 40-mile per hour winds, and 10 to 20 inches of snow. northeast winds right now. you can see that flow coming off the ocean. the ocean is chilly this time of year. of few showers and struggles moved through the area. most of the activity dot ross virginia and the kentucky area has really diminished. still a chance of a sprinkle or two overnight. tomorrow probably a better
