>> it is our hope, belief, and prayer, and whatever word we can come up with, that they will arrest george zimmerman for the murder of trevon martin. >> reporter: 21-year-old swroarnlg zimmerman -- george zimmerman claims it was self- defense. but the attorney for the martin family says the boy did not have a gun. >> he had a bag of skittles, cell phone and soda. where is the harm in that? >> she is traumatized over this. >> reporter: the girl told the family attorney that martin said he was being followed. >> she tells him, oh, babe, be careful, just run home. >> he says he will turn over the witnesses' information to the justice department because the family does not trust the

local authorities. terrell brown, wjz eyewitness news. >> the grand jury will meet april 10th. a former baltimore mayor is considering getting involved in this case. that story coming up all new at 6:00, right here on wjz. we have breaking news. a short time ago, a strong quake rocks central southern mexico. it was originally measured as a 7.6 magnitude quake. it has just been downgraded slightly to 7.4. it swayed buildings in mexico city, sending frightening workers and residents in the streets. there have been several smaller aftershocks. the u.s. joe lodge -- geological survey says it is underground in the mexican state of guerrero. the water system and other strategic systems are all working. this is some of the first video of the damage in mexico city. you can see people breaking through the concrete and trying to get to a driver, trapped under a bridge. the white house says barack

obama's oldest daughter, malia is on a school trip in mexico. she is safe and never in danger. oaxaca is east. jessica kartalija is live in the newsroom with an emotional burial. >> 48-year-old major robert marchanti was killed while serving in afghanistan. [ playing "taps" ] burial services are held early this morning at arlington national cemetery. major marchanti was a member of the maryland army national guard and a former baltimore county school teacher. he was murdered last month inside a highly-secured building in kabul. his death is believed to be

payback for u.s. troops' accidental burning of the koran. another soldier was also killed during that february attack. kai? >> jessica, thank you. major marchanti leaves behind a wife and four children. the mission is staying on track, despite anger of the u.s. soldier massacre of civilians. the u.s. will stick to its war strategy. >> reporter: staff sergeant robert bales told a u.s. attorney he has no memory of when nine people were murdered. >> i'm concerned about his being a danger to himself. >> reporter: brown says bales, who was in custody at fort leavenworth, is worried about retaliation against his fellow soldiers in afghanistan. the killings have sparked protest, calling for u.s. forces to leave. but the top commander told a

congressional committee, it remains the same. >> i wish i could tell you. >> the current plan is for u.s. troops to withdraw. again today, the white house says there are no plans to change that. >> we are in the process of transitioning security lead over to the afghan security forces. >> reporter: those who know bales continue to express disbelief over what happened, including former nfl fullback mark edwards. edwards and bale were in high school and remained close friends. in a statement, he said, i viewed him as a person with enormous integrity, courage. bales is expected to be charged the end of the week. randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> bales' attorney claims his client suffered from post traumatic stress disorder. it's a critical state.

and today, voters are going to the polls to choose their presidential candidate. it's a two-man race between mitt romney and rick santorum. >> reporter: illinois republicans are picking the gop candidate they want to challenge president obama. >> i hope romney takes illinois. i really do. i think right now, he's probably the best qualified. >> i like santorum. he seems like a more traditional and conservative candidate. >> reporter: mitt romney and rick santorum spent the past few days, pounding the pavement in illinois. romney continues to make the case that he's the best candidate to win back the white house. >> together, we're going to get this job done, i'm going to get the nomination. we're going to defeat barack obama. >> reporter: santorum had to do damage control, after saying he didn't, quote, care about the unemployment rate. >> occasionally, you say some things you wish you had a do- over. >> reporter: mitt romney is

expected to do well in suburban chicago districts like this one, while rick santorum is planning on a big turnout from conservatives in the state. >> you don't get a chance very often to speak loudly, as conservatives in illinois. >> reporter: even with a strong turnout, santorum faces an uphill battle for illinois delegates. his campaign did not file the appropriate paperwork in a handful of districts. and some countiesies have run into theiron problems at the polls. newly-designed ballots were not fit properly to go into the machine to read them. all ballots will have to be hand read. maryland is traveling for a town hall meeting in arbutus. former governor ehrlich, is part of this campaign. we'll bring you the latest on the candidates and updated primary results. the anne arundel county

desire a tornado makes its way through south texas overnight. and it's all caught on video. this cell phone shows the twister touching down in divine. you can see the black funnel cloud out of the sky. the tornado destroyed at least a dozen homes. only a couple of minor injuries were reported. the center tower inside washington's national cathedral, is reopening to the public. but only for one day. the tower sustained most damage during the east coast earthquake last august. it's been deemed structurally sound and safe for visitors and will open saturday for a tower clime. -- climb. repairs are continuing and

expecting to cost $20 million. approximately $2 million has been raised so far. >> for half a million maryland catholics, the transition of power is under way. a new archbishop has been appointed for the baltimore archdiocese. pope benedict names bishop william laurie to take the post this spring. >> reporter: cardinal edwin o'brien introduced his successor today. a bit of a step backward on wall street today. all the markets are down. the dow is down 69. the s&p down 4. nasdaq at 4. let's go to new york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. >> reporter: the stock market started spring with a sell-off. investors are concerned that a slowdown will hurt the economic recovery here in the u.s. a mixed report on the housing market. the government says builders broke ground on fewer homes in february. but they requested more permits for future construction later in the year. a mild winter allowed builders to keep working in most parts of the country. an improving job market also has economists slightly more optimistic. oprah winfrey is shaping up her own network. it is cutting jobs or about a fifth of its work force. the move comes just days after the network canceled rosie

we're following breaking news. a shooting in owings mills. let's go right to captain mike perry above it in sky eye chopper 13. >> i apologize. this couldn't be any more convoluted than it is. this is what we know. this occurred, a stabbing and a shooting. there is about 15 police units, along reisterstown road, near field spring court, where this

action actually occurred. we are told that several suspects were involved in a fight, which involved a stabbing. subsequent to the stabbing, there was a shooting, and then four or five suspects fled in a motor vehicle. during the course of the fleeing, apparently a bullet ended up in the side of that fleeing car. someone inside the vehicle was wounded. all five of those persons went over to the northwest hospital center to get help for the individual that was shot inside the vehicle. now, once that northwest hospital center, police were able to get there. four have been taken into custody at this time. one person that was shot is being taken from northwest hospital center, over to sinai hospital, by ground, we are told. his condition is not known. this is a very large scene in the village of queen anne, off of reisterstown road. we'll continue to keep you updated as we continue to gather information. back to you on tv hill. >> thank you, captain mike. thank you.

there's a really good shot we may get to 80 and 81ing degrees. because we'll finally lose that easterly component. and the winds go back to the south or southwest, where it's been really warm. minneapolis is 79 and 80 degrees yesterday and today. they had some showers today. in fact, most of the country really, it's not too bad. except for the shower activity, minnesota to texas. heavy rains over east texas. this has been the drought area for the next two or three years. they got within 3 to 5 inches of rain over the last two or three days. unbelievable amounts of flooding there. further east, not too bad. very, very warm. chicago, 84 today. out to the west, that's where the cool air is. snow in the northwest. cascades in washington and oregon. finally ended in portions of montana. but did pick up 6 to 8 or 12 inches. this rain pattern, beginning to move off to the east and northeast. it will take a long time to get through our area. looks like widely scattered showers heading to the south tonight. our chances of showers very, very slim tonight.

it's 4:30. 69 degrees. mostly sunny. hello, everyone. and thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm vic carter. denise is off today. here's what people are talking about. intense manhunt. the latest attack in southern france, kills four people outside a jewish school. the region is on edge. and the french president is vowing to fight back. >> a violent and tragic start to the week in southwest france. just as students were arriving in a jewish school in taluz, a gunman on a motorcycle opens fire. >> ladies and gentlemen. it's a drama. a tragedy. we will do everything we can to stop this crime. so that there are no more victims. >> reporter: the school's director saw his daughter shot and killed in front of him. a teacher and his two young children are also dead. the youngest victim, just 3 years old. >> it's worth thinking about the family that it's hurting. >> thinking about the mother who has lost her two children.

and her husband on the same day. >> reporter: the community is on edge, while the gunman remains alt large. monday's tragedy marks this third attack by a gunman. last week, three soldiers were killed in two separate shootings. they were all of north african origin. there's now concern that ethnic minorities are now being targeted. >> this is savagery. cruelty. and it will never triumph. >> reporter: investigators say one of the guns used in the school shooting is the same weapon used in the earlier killings. as a precaution, jewish organizations across the country are increasing security. i'm elizabeth coradon reporting. >> reporter: some jewish organizations are taking precautions. amanda knox is free. but her parents could face prison time. kai is live in the newsroom with more on the charges they are facing in italy. >> reporter: knox's parents are charged with slander for telling a british newspaper their daughter was physically

abused during interrogation. last year, an appeals court overturned their convictions. the trial for knox's parents is set to start march 30th in perugia. a man is interrogated by police should have been recorded but it was not. so proving amanda knox was abused may be difficult. >> curt knox and eta millis face three years in prison if convicted. it has been five months since a woman was injured by a shopping cart hurled from a third floor mall. the victim's family is speaking out. >> reporter: the surveillance video is difficult for almost anyone to watch. but for michael hedges, it's impossible. it shows the moment his life changed forever. >> i'm quite concerned that my children never see that video. i would never like to see that video. >> reporter: hedge's wife, marian, was standing on the ground level of the parking

garage at this east harlem target store last november. when 13-year-old giovanni and 12-year-old raymond hernandez decided to pull a horrific prank and toss a shopping cart over the edge. this video shows a third boy, achilles, in a white hoody, trying to stop his friends, to no avail. >> we knew about the third boy. we're grateful that he maid the effort that -- made the effort that he did. >> the cart plummeted five stories. a mother dedicated to charity, who had stepped in to buy halloween candy for underprivileged kids. she suffered critical injuries and even now, months later, her recovery is agonizingly slow and excruciatingly painful. >> she could walk five or six blocks before she starts feeling nauseous and dizzy. she had this vicious memory. our family is under tremendous strain. >> but the fact that marian hedges is alive is a fact they

can't escape. and michael says his wife remains determined to turn this nightmare into something good. >> she is working to identify mechanisms and charity that will do good for city youth when and if she is able to do that. and i will try to help her. >> reporter: marion hedges says she never heard an apology from the boys but wishes them well. one was sentenced to six months in a therapeutic foster home. the other was ordered to six months therapy in a therapy boarding school. security patted down a 3- year-old boy in a wheelchair. the child was given extra attention because his chair could not fit through the scanners at a chicago area airport. instead of the agent, the boy's father is pointing the blame at the entire tsa. >> there is another human beings putting their hands on my child. that's not acceptable. if he was putting his hands on

my child in mcdonald's or any place else, we would immediately have him arrested. >> the tsa says it has changed the policy since the video recorded two years ago. patdowns for toddlers are now unlikely. the parents of a girl electrocuted in a city park are asking lawmakers to make sure it never happens again. mary has more on today's rally. >> well, vic, deanna's family convinced them to check for stray voltage. but they say the regulations doesn't go far enough. dozens of supporters in annapolis call on lawmakers to pass a bill that would require them to routinely survey all areas for stray voltage. back in 2006, voltage from a decaying wire contacted defense -- the fence. after deanna's death, her parents successfully lobbied the tsa to regulate those changes.

vic? >> deanna would have turned 20 this week. in baltimore county, police are looking for a vandal who targeted a local church. it happened at the calvary baptist church in dundalk. firefighters say someone evacuated the bus there. an arson investigation is under way. well, spring is officially here. a live look outside right now, where conditions remain a bit cloudy. is rain headed our way this evening? wjz has weather and traffic together. bob is here now with the updated numbers. >> it is a little humid. the chances of rain, however, are really slim. we need some rain. it's been a dry and very warm month. look at radar. the only activity we're seeing is west virginia, mountain areas. closer to the baltimore area. a few very light scattered sprinkles across southern pennsylvania. one up here north of westminster. that's about it. just really nothing going on. the heavy stuff, south of oakland, all over the mountain areas in west virginia. that's all moving to the south.

a powerful storm system triggers major flooding in oklahoma. the storm has already dumped more than 7 inches of rain on the areas in tulsa. and forecasters are expecting to keep raining for days. several roads have been washed out but no serious complications have been reported. a new york man has been indicted today for a string of fire bombings. with more on the charges that could land the man in jail for life. vic, ray legend is now facing state and federal hate crime charges. police say legend threw molotov cocktails at four buildings back in january, including an islamic cultural center. although the buildings sustained major damage, no one was injured in the attack. the authorities say legend has

personal grievances with all of the targets and made broad, anti-muslim statements. vic? >> if convicted on all charges, legend could face life in prison. a victory for the defense in the jerry sandusky child abuse case. today, a judge ordered a judge to turn over numbers. the former penn state assistant football coach is accused of sexually abusing 10 boys. the trial is scheduled to begin in may. a scary day for a philadelphia family, after a toddler falls out of a window. the child walked away without a scratch. >> only cbs 3 cameras were rolling as this 15-month-old toddler, safe in a family member's arms, arrived home from the hospital. less than four hours after plunging out a third floor window, and falling 30 feet to the ground. >> is the baby okay? >> reporter: beyond saying, the toddler was fine, family members declined comment, as neighbors embraced them, expressing relief and joy that

the baby came through the fall unhurt. >> it's a miracle. i'm just glad god works in mysterious ways. and i'm glad everything is okay. >> reporter: police investigators who ruled this an accident, say the toddler was being carefully watched by his grandmother when he suddenly leaned against the screen, falling out, as she desperately tried to grab him. >> i don't know if the soft stuff down here saved him or not. but you know, we have just been worried until we heard that everything is okay. >> reporter: finally, of all the spots where the toddler might have landed in a huge complex, surrounded by concrete and parking lots, the toddler landed in this bed of flowers, which just a few days ago, had been filled with fresh, soft mulch. >> before it was done, you know, it was gravel and everything. so -- i'm just glad he's okay. >> reporter: perhaps, someday, when he's hold enough -- old enough to understand, his family members may attempt to explain to this little boy, just how lucky he was.

>> and as you just saw, the boy was back with his family and doing just fine. a texas man is behind bars, after allegedly giving his baby vodka. police say the 1-year-old was rushed to the hospital with blood alcohol levels, two times the legal limit for adults. the boy's father said he took his son's cup but later a mitted to giving the son alcohol before. the boy is now in child protective services. the only branch at the university of davis campus. it -- is closed down after the several occupy uc davis protests. >> reporter: it's a win for the occupy uc davis movement. u.s. bank closed after repeated protests, blocking customers from entering, keeping the bank from doing business. >> i think that real change actually upon a few days ago, when we got an actual branch of a very big national bank to leave campus. >> reporter: occupiers say the protests were peaceful.

but u.s. bank feels differently. they call the situation intolerable, saying their employees were imprisoned in the branch. they released this statement, saying, despite our best attempts, we were limited in our ability to resolve the matter and were forced to close the office. and it ends a 10 of-year deal by the bankruptcy. it end. >> i think. instead, they were wanted the option to. unfortunately, it hurts the students. >> they also have to look at what is going to be best for the students and university in general. and shutting it down is costing our university a lot more money, which is just going to end up hurting our university and our students. >> reporter: u.s. bank says it will hold the university responsible for all of its losses, including cost of the

70, easton now. here at 74 last hour. 61 ocean city. a bit of a breeze off the ocean as well. -- ocean there. a bit of rain. that rain has moved down in the mountains of west virginia. 75 now, in cumberland. pretty warm air to the west of us. and we're going to get into that warm air next couple of days. even warmer than that expected. thursday and friday. it's been near 80 degrees in minnesota. that's moving this way. chicago is 84 this afternoon. there's a real good chance we'll get into the low 80s. the only caveat with that, of course, with the bay. if there's any bit of a breeze off the water, it will keep us somewhat cooler. 68, 69, as you can see, 72 over in washington, and rock hall. kent island, 68. very light, east/northeast winds. just a component off the ocean to keep us from getting too warm. but that should change, the winds should go back to the south, eventually to the southwest. and that will get us into warm air that has been sitting out over michigan, chicago area.

illinois, this whole area in the midwest. ohio valley has been really warm. to the west, we've got this frontal boundary with heavy shower, heavy rain, oklahoma, you saw, texas, waco area, picks up 6 inches of rain. this is the same area in texas that had a severe drought for the last two years. now they getting completely flooded. that rain is getting skinnier as it heads out to the east. but it will continue to bring moisture over the mountains and eventually this weekend. we do expect to see some rain here this weekend. along with cooler temperatures, as the winds go back to that ocean component. right now, not a whole lot going on except down here in southwest virginia. we stay on the warm side of this area. that continues all week long. friday night and saturday. that front finally gets here. and that will give us a risk of showers and cool us down for the weekend. southeast winds, 5 to 10 knots. bay temp around 53 degrees. tonight, any shower, very isolated. and it will be done quickly. 58 by morning with fog. and that fog finally burns off again. back up in the low to perhaps
