good morning, and thanks for joining us. i'm betty nguyen. the next republican primary is saturday in louisiana. rick santorum is pinning his hopes on a strong showing there after getting trounced by mitt romney in yesterday's illinois vote. romney rode a wave of tv advertising to a decisive double-digit win in illinois. romney outspent his opponent 7-1 in tv ads and grabbed his third primary victory in a row. cbs news estimates romney won 41 of the 54 delegates in play there giving him a total of 534 of the 1ishgs,044 needed to for nomination. susan mcginnis is in washington to break down all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. romney is just about halfway there, almost halfway there delegatewise, so strong position. illinois was a must win for both romney and santorum.

despite romney taking illinois, santorum and for that matter all of the candidates, show no sign of giving up. mitt romney thanked supporters in illinois for his double-digit win over rick santorum. >> what a night. wow. >> reporter: and immediately turned his focus to defeating president obama in november. >> it's time to say these words -- this word -- enough. we've had enough. >> reporter: exit polls showed the economy was the most important issue among voters in illinois. mitt romney says it's his number one priority. >> i'm running for president because i have the experience and the vision to get us out of this mess. >> reporter: cbs news estimates romney will take 41 of illinois's 54 delegates, widening his overall lead. >> at some point romney gets to be able to say, these other guys are spoilers. i'm going to get there. why are we dragging this out? why aren't we talking about president obama? >> reporter: rick santorum is downplaying his second place finish. >> we did what we had to do. we got the delegates we could get. we're feeling good.

again, it's very clear. it's a two-person race. >> reporter: santorum is already looking ahead to the next contest. he'll campaign today in louisiana and predicts he'll pull off a big victory on saturday. newt gingrich finished fourth last night and is also looking to gain momentum from the southern state. >> i think we have a very, very good chance to win a lot of delegates here in louisiana. >> please welcome ron paul. >> reporter: ron paul spent primary night in california and joked with jay leno on "the tonight show". >> i think the other three should just get out of the race. >> reporter: paul finished third yesterday and is in last place in the race for delegates, but he insists his campaign will go all the way to the convention. so, there is no doubt that romney right now is in the best position to clinch this nomination. and at the current pace, that will happen in june. no one is counting out an upset, though, betty, santorum could do very well in louisiana and his home state has yet to vote. that will happen in april.

>> we'll be watching. susan mcginnis in washington, thank you. exit polls show romney was by far the preferred candidate for voters who said beating president obama was the quality they wanted most in a nominee. romney won among illinois voters who describe themselves as conservative. and he won among women voters in illinois. but 46% of the people who voted for romney say they have reservations about the former massachusetts governor. there were ballot problems in yesterday's primary in 25 counties and the city of aurora. the paper ballots were too big and wouldn't fit in the box. new paper ballots eventually arrived. this morning french police cornered and exchanged gunfire with a man suspected of killing four people at a jewish school. police surrounded a house in toulouse. the suspect a 24-year-old french man who says he belongs to al qaeda. he says he wants to avenge the killing of palestinian children

police believe he shot and killed a rabbi and three children on monday and is also responsible for the murder of three french paratroopers. the gunman says he's surrender later today. the victims of monday's shooting in toulouse, a rabbi and another child were buried today in israel. the lawyer for army sergeant bales says his client is, quote, a soldier's soldier. john henry browne has met with bales for 11 hours over the past two days. bales is being held at ft. leavenworth in kansas. browne says his client doesn't remember what happened the night of the massacre. he says he plans to travel to afghanistan to get his own evidence. >> i don't know about the evidence in this case. i don't know that the government's going to prove much. there's no forensic evidence. >> a tacoma, washington, newspaper reports bales was arrested ten years ago for a drunken assault on a casino security guard. now to that severe weather

that just continues to plague the south central united states. more heavy rain is forecast through tomorrow. flash flood warnings have been issued for parts of louisiana, arkansas, texas, oklahoma and missouri. folks in oklahoma are trying to recover from yesterday's flooding and high water. near tulsa yesterday, the thunder was so loud, residents thought it was an earthquake. there are no reports of serious injuries following the biggest earthquake to hit mexico since 1985, but yesterday's powerful quake damaged at least 800 homes. another 60 have totally collapsed. there's been at least one substantial aftershock and in mexico city, hundreds of miles from the quake's center, telephone service was knocked out. we report from the mexican capital. >> reporter: mexican officials are assessing the damage following the 7.4 magnitude earthquake in southern mexico. buildings are cracked and tourists are shaken. >> we were on the 20th floor. everything started shaking.

the windows were shaking. i sat on the floor and it was very scary. >> reporter: the quake struck just after noon and was centered near the resort town of acapulco. buildings rattled as far away as mexico city. >> all of a sudden people were running along. we joined. when we got to the front entrance, we could feel things going back and forth. looked out at the trees, saw the trees moving. said, this is an earthquake. >> reporter: the mexico city, the pedestrian bridge crashed down on a mini bus. luckily, the bus was empty. this area is prone to very large earthquakes. in 1985 a 7.9 magnitude earthquake killed nearly 10,000 people. and this was the strongest earthquake since then. in oaxaca, tuesday's quake knocked out power, shook utility lines and set off alarms. people gathered in the streets, waiting for word that was safe to go back inside. president obama's oldest daughter malia is vacationing in

the greek parliament approved the latest bailout loan from the eurozone countries this morning. but some of greece's creditors remain concerned the country's austerity measures may not do enough to lower its debt. and that could mean a third bailout would be needed to rescue greece from default. the airline industry is keeping a close watch on the rising cost of oil and the tensions in iran. according to an aviation trade association, airlines could lose more than $5 billion this year if oil prices spiked to $150 a barrel. prices are now just under $107 a barrel, a nine-month high. the trade group says airlines are already expecting to see earnings decline because of rising fuel costs. and sales of apple's new ipad have been sizzling but so are the hands of the people using them. according to a study by "consumer reports" the new tablet reached a temperature of 116 degrees while a game was running. that's 13 degrees hotter than the ipad 2 under the same

circumstances. at a jewish school in toulouse. two police officers have been wounded. the suspect claims to be connected to al qaeda and says he'll surrender this afternoon. officials in a florida town are under growing pressure to file charges against a neighborhood watch member who admits he shot and killed an unarmed black teenager. hundreds rallied at a church in sanford last night, demanding justice. later marched in orlando to the town's center. earlier in tallahassee protesters marched to the state capital and met with the governor. bob orr has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: in the three weeks since trayvon martin was killed inside this gated florida community, neighborhood watch george zimmerman claims he shot martin in self-defense, but attorney been yeah minimum crump says the unarmed teenager was targeted because of his race. >> arrest george zimmerman for the killing of trayvon martin in

cold blood today. >> reporter: crump said on the night of the shooting, martin was heading home from the store and on the phone with his girlfriend. in a telephone interview, the young woman told crump she listened as martin was suddenly confronted by a stranger. >> he's following me. >> reporter: the girlfriend said she urged martin to run away, and he responded, he would walk fast. at around the same time, zimmerman also made a call to the sanford, florida, police to report a suspicious person in his neighborhood. >> he's got his hands in his waistband. and he's a black male. >> are you following him? >> yeah. >> okay. we don't need to you do that. >> reporter: what happened next is the critical question. a law enforcement source says zimmerman told police he began retreating his car and only fired his weapon after martin jumped him from behind. zimmerman has a license to carry

a gun. florida law allows people to use lethal force in self-defense. but crumps ins zimmerman was the aggressor and records show crump has been a frequent caller to police with 46 calls in the last year, often reporting african-americans. n now justice department civil rights division says they will determine if a hate crime has occurred. state prosecutors in florida have a wider criminal investigation. if the grand jury there returns an indictment, zimmerman could face charges ranging from negligence to manslaughter, perhaps even murder. but for now he remains free, not charged with any crime. bob orr, cbs news, washington. coming up after your local news on "cbs this morning," the latest on mitt romney's huge win in illinois. an investigation into counterfeit cancer drugs. you want to see this.
