good morning. i'm betty nguyen. we begin with the outcry over the shooting of an unarmed black teenager in florida. the neighborhood watch man who shot the teen has not been arrested for last month's shooting. here in new york a demonstration was held in memory of trayvon manuel gallegus was there. >> reporter: a crowd of supporters surrounded the parents of 17-year-old trayvon martin as they left a rally in manhattan's union square. it was hectic but peaceful. supporters are calling for justice for the teen who was shot dead by a man in his florida gated community. >> it was a travesty what happened to this young man. i want to show solidarity for the family but also to, you know, all people of color who suffer indignants on a daily basis. >> incredible this young man was murdered, practically a month

ago and his killer is still walking out free. >> reporter: the 17-year-old was killed last month while walking in sanford, florida, near orlando. he was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and carrying candy. neighborhood watch captain george zimmerman saw him and called police saying he looked suspicious. zimmerman has a license to carry a gun and says he fired in self-defense. he has not been charged. many in the crowd of demonstrators were wearing hooded sweatshirts to show their solidarity with the teenager. the teen's father says he was killed because he was black. >> my son was praying for his life. so, if anything, trayvon was acting in self-defense. >> reporter: the protesters want zimmerman arrested. they also want changes to florida's stand your ground law which allows people to defend themselves with deadly force if they feel threatened. manuel gallegus, cbs news, new york. overseas the french interior minister says the suspect in a deadly shooting wants to die with weapons in his hand. the suspect, 24-year-old

mohammad merah, is holed up in an apartment in toulouse for a second day. officials say he bragged about shooting flee children and a rabbi outside a jewish school and three french paratroopers. but police have not heard from him since wednesday night. he says he's a member of al qaeda and had more attacks planned because he wanted to bring france to its knees. after winning the illinois primary and getting key endorsements, mitt romney campaign for gop presidential nomination should be on a roll. instead it's all shook up. susan mcginnis is in washington. good morning, susan. this is a little sketchy. >> reporter: definitely. good morning. mitt romney long battled the reputation of being a flip-flopper and now a comment from one of his own advisers is churning up those concerns and it all centers around an etch-a-sketch. just as republicans begin to

coalesce around gop front-runner, mitt romney, he's forced to defend himself after a campaign stop in maryland. >> it's an honor to be here. >> reporter: one of his advisers talking about the general election compared the fall campaign to an etch-a-sketch saying you can shake it up and start all over again. romney says his positions won't change. >> i'm running as a conservative republican. i was a conservative republican governor. i'll be running as a conservative republican nominee for president. the policies and positions are the same. >> reporter: at campaign stops throughout louisiana, rick santorum pounced on the gaffe. >> that should be comforting to all of you who are voting in this primary. that whoever you're going to vote for will be a completely new candidate. >> reporter: the comment comes as romney gains more support. former florida governor jeb bush endorsed him and said it's time for the gop to unite. president obama is focusing more on free election and defending his energy policy in three battleground states.

while campaigning in louisiana, newt gingrich said the president is depending too much on foreign countries to lower gas prices. >> if you want increased oil production, wouldn't it be a lot better to have it in louisiana where it created louisiana jobs? >> reporter: president obama is in oklahoma today and is expected to announce plans to accelerate work on the controversial keystone oil pipeline to increase production. now, as for the etch-a-sketch comment, newt gingrich also piled on saying, if we're dumb enough to nominate romney, we should expect he'll make a move to the left. the campaign insists he's not going to change positions, this is just about a change of focus from primaries to the general election. >> getting interesting. susan mcginnis in washington, thank you for that. as gas prices soar, the pipeline and president's energy policies are a key issue in this election year. this morning mr. obama begins a second day of a four-state energy tour.

he's defending his energy policy and disputing republican claims that his administration has stymied the seven for oil. yesterday in new mexico the president says he's opened up millions of acres in this country for oil and gas exploration. >> we're drilling all over the place. that's one of the reasons we've been able to reduce our dependence on foreign oil every year since i took office. >> the president argued drilling for new oil alone will not solve the nation's energy problems or reduce the price of gasoline. now to the republican plan to reform health care. in the proposed budget, house republicans want to put future retirees into a medicare plan that has them shop for the best health care policy. the plan would affect people 54 years old and younger. an investment of a few thousand dollars may end up costing the new orleans saints a shot at winning next year's super bowl, which will be played in their hometown. on wednesday nfl commissioner roger goodell hit the saints with an unprecedented punishment for running a program that

rewarded players for injuring members of opposing teams. head coach sean payton will be suspended for the entire 2012 season. it's the first time the nfl has suspended a head coach for any reason. it will cost payton his $7 million salary. the commissioner says the super bowl winning coach knew about the so-called bounty program and denied it existed. >> we were misled. there were denials. meanwhile, there continued to be risks to our players and integrity of our game. >> quarterback drew brees reacted on twitter, writing, i'm speechless. sean payton is a great man, coach and mentor. i need to hear an explanation for this punishment. former saints' defensive assistant gregg williams, who was in charge of the bounties has been suspended indefinitely. he was hired in january to coach the rams' defense. his new boss says the suspension was warranted. >> i was asked, had you known

about it, would you have hired him? >> williams agreed to his punishment. it was a terrible mistake, williams writes. instead of getting caught up in, it i should have stopped it. the suspensions come after a two-year investigation by the nfl who found as many as 27 saints targeted opponents for injury. they say defensive players were paid between $1,000 to $1500 to knock opposing players out of the game. saints linebacker jonathan vilma is also accused of offering $10,000 to any teammate who knocked then-viking quarterback brett favre out of the 2010 nfc championship game. now, commissioner goodell says sanctions against players will come at a later date. the league also suspended saints' general manager for eight games and an assistant coach for six games. the team is being fined $500,000 and will be docked two draft picks. saints issued an apology on the team website. coming up on "the morning news" the ohio family who

now this is a big time rock and roll. a huge sandstone boulder loosened by heavy rain broke free tuesday night in athens, ohio, rolled down a steep hill, yep, right there. smashed into the house at the bottom and crushed the car in the bottom of the driveway. luckily no one was injured. today work crews will start breaking up and hauling it away. going to take some time. new government report showing big changes the way people approach marriage. a study of 22,000 men and women shows about 60% of couples live together before marrying and they're just as likely to still be married after 15 years as couples who waited until after the wedding to move in together. on "cbs moneywatch," shines

of shrinking for housing market. ashley morrison is here. good morning. >> an up day for asian market. nikkei rose 0.5% and hang seng lift a fraction. trading on wall street was quiet wednesday. the dow was down 45 points. the nasdaq gained a little more than one point. the u.s. housing market got another positive sign on wednesday. the national association of realtors says home sales dipped slightly in february but the past three months have been the best winter for sales in five years. economists say the improving job market has helped fuel demand for housing. federal reserve chairman ben bernanke assured members of congress that u.s. banks are strong enough to weather a european financial crisis. bernanke says a meltdown in europe would be costly to the american economy but banks are in better shape to withstand a crisis than they were before the recession. and general motors is getting a big boost down under.

australian government says it will offer gm a $275 million subsidy to continue making cars in australia. gm promises to invest $1 billion in manufacturing in australia. pretty big moves going on down under. >> no doubt. ashley morrison here in new york. thank you. straight ahead, your thursday morning weather. in sports, the deal looked shaky for a while but this morning tim tebow is a jet all the way. when bp made a commitment to the gulf, we were determined to see it through.

here's an update on the progress. we're paying for all spill related clean-up costs. bp findings supports independent scientists studying the gulf's environment. thousands of environmental samples have been tested and all beaches and waters are open. and the tourists are back. i was born here, i'm still here and so is bp.

here's a look at today's forecasts in some cities around the country. new york, mostly sunny, 80. miami, partly sunny, 83. chicago, afternoon showers, 74. dallas, partly cloudy, 69. l.a., partly sunny, 68. now for a check of the national forecast. rain and thunderstorms will stream north from the lower mississippi valley. severe thunderstorms and possible tornadoes are likely along the gulf coast from louisiana to the florida panhandle. rain and showers will fall in the northern plains. more rain and snow will fall in the northwest and northern rockies. and record warmth continues in the northeast. in sports, the new york jets nailed down their trade for quarterback tim tebow last night eight hours after prematurely announcing the deal was complete. last season's most talked about player goes to new york from denver for two future draft picks. tebow will be the backup to mark sanchez, who just got a $40

million contract extension. tebow mania comes to new york even as knicks winning streak revives linsanity. last night in philadelphia amar'e stoudemire's big jam helped big an early lead over the sixers. late in the game, jeremy lin drove for a lateup. the knicks won their fifth straight, 82-79. in dallas, the lakers kobe bryant spun toward the basket, took an alley-oop pass and flipped it over his shoulder for a score. bryant had 30 points leading the lakers with a win over the mavericks 109-93. when we come back, armen keteyian confronts a man whose company had a role in bringing a fake cancer drug into the u.s. company brought a fake cancer drug into the u.s. mostly cloudy in atlanta. afternoon thunderstorms, 80. st. louis, 67. denver, 63. seattle, 47. now a follow-up to a story we reported yesterday. how did a fake version of the cancer-fighting drug avastin end up in the united states? armen keteyian spoke to the man who shipped them to the u.s. >> reporter: we traveled to the caribbean nation barbados to sit down with the man responsible for bringing counterfeit avastin into the united states, tom haughton. tom. >> what's up? >> armen keteyian. >> reporter: a source close to the federal criminal investigation told krbcbs news haughton's role importing avastin into the u.s. is a key part of the probe. haughton told us he broke no law. >> i have nothing to hide. the businesses i have are ethical, safe and legal. >> reporter: you talk about

safety but the fact is, according to you, 36 packets of the fake avastin got into the hands of doctors and into the hands of potential patients. so, how can it be so safe? >> because we followed protocol. we as a licensed registered uk wholesaler bought the product through the trusted and controlled supply chain. >> reporter: do you know what was in the fake avastin? there was salt and there was starch and there was acetone, but there was nothing in there to fight cancer. >> well, for me, that is shocking. and it's so disappointing. >> reporter: according to the food and drug administration, the only avastin approved for u.s. in the u.s. is made in the u.s. by genentech. haughton repeatedly blamed his european supplier and regulators for failing to discover the counterfeit drug. >> we are legally entitled to sell any product with our license.

to any registered licensed doctor, wholesaler. so the question -- the fda you're not. >> then you need to go to the clinic. >> reporter: now it's the clinic's fault, it's not your fault for bringing in through your company into the united states avastin that turned out to be fake? >> these clinics, they purchased this product. and we're not in the u.s., so i'm not sure what the u.s. laws are. they would have to -- they would have to make sure what they're doing. >> reporter: you're not sure of what the u.s. laws are regarding the use of avastin, a cancer-fighting drug, a life-saving drug in the united states? >> i'm telling you that we, my wholesaler in the united kingdom -- >> reporter: but it's your company. >> yeah, i know. i know what the laws are in the uk, but you'd have to ask the clinic. >> reporter: so you don't know, though, really whether that product, which turned out to be fake, was made in someone's bathtub in egypt or turkey? >> i'm not going to speculate.
