hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> stepping down. breaking news from florida. moments ago, the sanford police chief temporarily removes himself from his position. it comes as demonstrators demand justice for an unarmed teen, shot by a neighborhood watch commander. >> reporter: freeman drove four hours to attend a rally in sanford, florida, for trayvon martin. >> i was just compelled that i had to be here as a parent to just represent and get justice for this young man. >> reporter: demonstrators, including the reverend al sharpton, are expected to fill this park. it's near the community where neighborhood watch captain, george zimmerman, shot martin dead. the unarmed 17-year-old was walking near his father's house last month, when zimmerman saw him and called police. >> are you following him? >> yeah.

>> okay. we don't need you to do that. >> reporter: zimmerman, who has not been charged, says he shot in self-defense when martin attacked him. the case sparked outrage nabd nationwide. -- nationwide. martin's parents met with federal officials who launched the civil rights investigation. >> our son is your son. >> reporter: demonstrators want zimmerman to be charged and the local authorities who handled the case are under intense scrutiny. >> reporter: the sanford city council passed a no confidence motion against the police chief over the shooting. ask there are questions about the self-defense law that let zimmerman go free. florida stand your ground law was authored by this man, but says after this case, it may need to be changed. >> we need to look at the circumstances occurred and see if some kind of legislation is in order. >> reporter: zimmerman could still be charged. florida prosecutors will convene a grand jury next month

in order to decide. in sanford, florida, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> florida's stand your ground law has been in effect since 2025. 20 other states have similar laws. five bodies are discovered aboard the costa concordia, three months after it wrecks. andrea fujii is live with more on today's discovery. andrea? >> reporter: well, kai, the five new bodies raises the number discovered to 30 and leaves two still missing. the ship hit a rocky reef, took on water and turned over off the tuscany coast in january. divers have been combing the half-submerged ship from passenger cabins to the decks, where more than 4,000 passengers gathered during the frantic evacuations. these latest bodies found have yet to be identified. the concordia's italian captain remains under house arrest. he's under investigation for alleged manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship. kai? >> andrea, thank you. a mother and daughter from

silver spring, maryland, survive the wreck. dramatic end. an islamic extremist is dead after a fierce gun battle with police. tina kraus has the latest for wjz. >> reporter: french commandos stood down, after a deadly 32- hour standoff in toulouse. the siege ended with gunfire and explosions at the apartments of suspected killer mohammed merra. the 23-year-old was hiding in the bathroom when police stormed his home. prosecutors say merra had several guns and fired at police. officers shot back, hitting him in the head, as he threw himself out the window. police negotiators say an hour before his death, merra admitted to killing a teacher and three students at a jewish school this week and murdering three french soldiers earlier this month. detectives say merra filmed the killings and was proud of them. merra is seen in this amateur

video, claimed to have links to al qaeda. he called the attacks, payback, for the killing of palestinian children and the french military's involvement in afghanistan. president nicolas sarkozy says an investigation is under way to see if merra had any accomplices. merra said he had traveled to afghanistan and pakistan for terrorist training. officers wanted to take him alive, but the extremist promised he would die fighting. tina kraus, wjz eyewitness news. >> several police officers were injured in the gunfight with the suspect. well, five men are now in baltimore county police custody, in connection with two stabbings and a brawl in owings mills. police say two people were stabbed when a large fight broke out on spectator lane in owings mills tuesday. all five of these men now face attempted murder and assault charm -- charges. detectives are continuing to investigate a shooting that also occurred during the fight.

but so far, no one has been charged in that. new information in the case of anne arundel county executives accused of spying on political enemies. he says he won't appear because it could affect the case against john leopold. mike hellgren has the latest. >> reporter: and this is the letter state police have denied the chief's request, saying the state prosecutor is already working on a similar investigation. >> reporter: anne arundel county's police chief is now asking state police to investigate whether his officers improperly used a state criminal database. in a letter to state police, chief james tier wrote tthat possibly violates state and federal laws. leopold is under indictment for misconduct in office and misappropriating state money. they used the criminal data basis to keep files on his political enemies, including political activist carl

snowden. >> this is unprecedented. no other political activist has done this. >> if these charges are true, john leopold is not fit to hold office, and he should resign immediately. >> reporter: chief tier's letter comes after a no- confidence vote on him by two police unions, alleging that he turned a blind eye. and a subpoena from the county council who unanimously demanded tier testify before them under oath, about what, if anything, he knew at a special meeting monday. >> we have been under some pressure to have a very public accounting of this. and i think over the last couple of weeks, we've all had a chance to deliberate and take input in from our constituents. and it's pretty clear now what it is they want us to do. >> reporter: the state department of public safety, which maintains that criminal database, says it is willing to cooperate in any investigation. mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> john leopold denies doing anything illegal and says he plans to fight the charges in

court. a new chapter in the mystery surrounding the president of the university of maryland, university college. dr. susan aldridge is resigning. she will formally step down from the state's leading online educational institution at the end of the month. aldridge has been on unexplained administrative leave since february. she has served as president of umuc since 2006. a very foggy start to the day in maryland. the dense moisture in the air may make it harder to get there for a lot of people. here in druid park, the visibility was very limited as drivers took it very slowly and carefully. taking a look outside now. the fog is clear. the sun is shining on another warm spring day. it's beautiful. wjz has weather and traffic together. we'll talk to kristy in a second. but here's bob turk with the updated numbers. >> dense fog, particularly in the eastern shore, where schools were delayed like an hour. even west of the bay, we had dense fog.

but the sun has come out. this is the visible satellite. it's like going up and taking a shot. this afternoon, lots of clouds all across central maryland as you can see. but during the day, things begin to clear up. and boom, there they go. now we've got pretty much clear skies. temperatures have really jumped back into the 70s. look at cumberland. 81 degrees. oakland at 73. baltimore now at 72. ocean city, with some sun there at sketch. -- 67. now, tomorrow, see the 81- degree temperatures. they're going to be very common across the area. the only problem is tomorrow once again, the ocean and the bay, very chilly. so any stations close to those regions are going to be probably six or seven, maybe even 10 degrees cooler, away from the bay, easily, we could get to 80 degrees tomorrow. so a little tough to predict exact numbers. upper 70s at least maybe low 80s. 82 is the record. we could break it. kai? >> bob, thank you. let's check on the roads

a louisiana man is lucky to be alive, after a tree falls on top of his car. it happened while he was driving home in a storm. the roof caved in and left him nearly trapped. but he managed to climb out and walk away, without a scratch. it took crews more than an hour to remove the tree from his car. a dramatic military helicopter crash is caught on video in afghanistan. look at this. the pilot appears to lose control. and the apache helicopter. wow. makes a hard landing in a remote area of snow. it narrowly miss said the building before it slams into the snow. no one was hurt. investigators are now looking into whether the pilot was doing stunts when that crash occurred. well, one of the last search-and-rescue dogs from 9/11, lives right here in maryland. she was suffering from a painful condition, until her owner took action with breakthrough technology. >> reporter: red is a search and rescue dog from annapolis but has traveled across the

country. her missions include hurricane katrina. the la plata tornadoes, the pentagon, after 9/11. >> because it's like finding 70% of the human remains. that helped a whole lot of those families actually get closure. >> reporter: 9/11 was red's first search. today, she's one of the last 9/11 search-and-rescue dogs to survive. she retired last summer due to her arthritis. >> she doesn't [ inaudible ] i'm going to cry. >> reporter: heather did some research and found that there is an animal hospital in virginia that does breakthrough stem cell surgery for dogs. >> the burke animal clinic is just one of a few across the country that use stem cell therapy. they harvest one of the dog's fatty tissue, act activates the stem cell, then reinjects them back into the areas. >> we've done about 28 dogs. and of those dogs, we're had 75 to 80% who have done very well.

east/northeast winds off the ocean, we still have that moisture around. so tonight, maybe some more fog. could be locally dense again. but it shouldn't be quite as thick, we don't think, tonight, as it has been the last couple of nights. so it will burn off quickly. 30.12 inches, the barometer. currently holding steady. look how warm it is to the west. that is going to be in central maryland, we think, tomorrow. 83 in cumberland. 76 in oakland, at over 2,000 feet up. that's remarkable. 71 in pax river. 77 now in easton and ocean city. a little cooler, of course, by the water, at 67. and we're at 72. locally, mid70s, some spots upper 60s by the bay. of course, the bay has that cooling effect. and tomorrow, any areas close to the bay, maybe 10 or more degrees cooler than areas away from the bay. that's the spring problem around here. it's very difficult to get the exact temperatures because the bay is so cold. wind shifts a little to the southeast. and temperatures really drop.

right now, we're seeing a bit of a north/northeast wind. i think tomorrow, most of the winds again will be out of the east. but they'll be rather light. however, we do have a weather system that has been spinning out here in the midwest. it's going to bring up warm air tomorrow. and our winds should begin to turn a little bit. then the clouds move in with this system. a good chance of rain this weekend, as a front comes down from the north. that moisture coming from the south and southwest. two of them combine to give us a really good shot of getting much-needed rain in the region. so we're looking for kind of a wet, maybe thundershower on saturday. and then just plain old rain, i think, on sunday, with cooler temps. east winds on the bay, becoming north as the weak front comes through. bay temp, around 54 now. tonight, still some fog possible. but not as dense as this morning. 54 for the low. it's almost our normal high. upper 70s. maybe 80, 81. the record tomorrow is 82. all depends on how many hours of sun we get. all in all, it's going to be a warm end to the week. >> good.

asked to throw out all charges against sandusky. he says that some charges aren't specific enough and others, the statute of limitations has run out. sandusky is on house arrest, awaiting a trial in may on charges he abused 15 boys over a 15-year period. the university is also agreeing to reimburse the legal expenses from any employee. >> sandusky is denying all of the sex abuse allegations. missing for months. today, the fbi says it has found the body of a teacher in montana. amanda vinegas reports, sheri arnold disappeared while jogging. >> reporter: on january 7th, life was turned upside-down after mother, friend and teacher disappeared. an investigation linked two men to her kidnapping. now, police have recovered a

body to believed -- believed to be sheri's. the community continues to grieve. >> it's been kind of an emotional roller coaster for everyone. >> reporter: city police chief bob burnison has been involved in the investigation since day 1 and says sheri's disappearance has made for a trying time in this small montana town. >> it even make its where when you actually know the person that is the victim, it really makes it a lot harder. >> reporter: sydney mayor bret smelter says for months, the entire community has prayed to find sheri. >> i think this is what we were looking for. it's definitely some closure for the community. hopefully it's enough closure for the family. >> reporter: the family has gone through the unthinkable over the past two and a half months. >> it's been a very difficult day. been a very difficult series of days. >> probably the toughest thing any of us have gone through. the toughest. >> reporter: and the community has been there to support them along the way.

from the 1,000 students and friends that scoured the town for any sign of sheri, the weekend she went missing, to the hundreds of students and friends, who filled the sydney gym to remember her at a prayer vigil, it's evident sheri touched the lives of many. >> she is one of the most caring people that you could ever imagine. >> reporter: two suspects have pleaded not guilty to the kidnapping in the case. detecting cancer in the blood. new research can improve the survival for breast cancer patients. mary has details in today's study in the healthwatch report. ctcs can be detected in a woman's blood, after breast cancer surgery, before chemotherapy. and they can provide doctors with critical information on the patient's survival rate and how to better plot a treatment plan. the study found patients with at least 5ctcs after surgery, have a four-fold increased risk of the cancer coming back.

a tank bursts into flames as syrian troops clash with rebels. the violence is increasing, despite u.n. efforts to stop the bloodshed. activists are calling for a cease-fire to open dialogue for both sides. syrians are blaming the unrest on terrorists. they say thousands of people have died in the year-long revolt. u.s. defense officials say the death toll in the massacre of afghan villagers is now 17. investigators have increased the number of dead. but officials have not

explained. the investigation is continuing. army staff sergeant, robert bales was reportedly gunned down on march 11th. he is expected to be charged on friday. as a british soccer star continues to recover, we're learning more about a shocking home field cardiac arrest. kai is in the newsroom with more. >> doctors are announcing fabris fuamba, was officially dead. it happened during a game last saturday. paramedics were able to use multiple defibrillator shocks to get his heart beating again. the 23-year-old is showing small signs of improvement. but remains in intensive care. the cause has not been determined. vic? >> he is a midfielder for the bolton wanderers. a little boy dies in philadelphia. and police say he was beaten and starved to death by his own parents. >> reporter: just 6 years old, who according to sources, was abused, beaten, and starved inside this home in the 1800

block of south 22nd street. when he died, we're told he weighed, at most, 27 pounds. >> like i never saw them. like having your son cooped up in the house. >> reporter: neighbors were shocked to learn not only of his tragic death. but even to learn that khalil lived next door. >> reporter: police arrested his parents, 49-year-old floyd wines. and tina wines, for murder and related offenses. according to sources, on monday night, the wines took khalil, claiming he fell out of a tub. he seemed autobiography at first, but later passed out. >> i believe the parents took him to chop at about 10:45 p.m. by 11:16, he was pronounced dead. and then went to the medical examiner's office, and they rule today death by blunt force traum -- to the head. >> reporter: khalil also had cuts and bruises all over his

it will be warmer tomorrow. close to the water. temperatures may only be in the low 70s because the water is so chilly, compared to the areas away from the area -- from the bay. 74 in washington now. 70 up in bel air and rock hall. we have a slight northeast wind now. tomorrow, looks like a north wind for a while. then goes east or southeast. which could keep the clouds in a little longer. but the general trend, as this low pressure ought to -- out to the west begins to head to the east. winds should begin to turn aloft, to the south and southwest. that's going to bring us really warm air. in addition, shower activity associated with that system, will begin to approach our region, late, late, late tomorrow. really early saturday. and a front from the north coming down. these two get together across the mid-atlantic. we have a really good shot of getting decent rain. and we really need it right now. we're about almost two inches below normal for the month of march. it's very warm. and a dry one. scattered light shower activity to the south. but tomorrow, as the front approaches, it will be in the
