justice for martin in maryland. >> reporter: this is a massive rally. it started at 5:00. it is still going on. many people are concerned about social and racial inequality. you're taking a live look at the crowd as they have made their way to city hall demanding justice for trayvon martin. hundreds of people of all races and ages came together at the inner harbor making a loud cry for justice after the death of trayvon martin the unarmed teenager shot to death in florida by a neighborhood watch captain. >> it could have been any one of our kids, whether it be an african american child of any race. you know it still should be some justice. >> why do you think it strikes such a nerve. >> because it's happening right here. >> reporter: the case has many reliving how they were victimized. >> i've had to sit down with my

son and talk to him about the code. right. the code being how do you conduct yourself as an african american male in our society when you may be approached by authority figures. >> reporter: in annapolis, the legislative black caucus drew attention to a cause. >> because a child wears your hood or because you wear your hair a certain way does not dictate your behavior. >> reporter: senator ben carden pushed for a law to end police profiling by race. >> what we want to know, we want to know the facts. but from the federal government we want to know how race came to play. >> reporter: martin's death has become for these supporters a powerful example of injustice that can no longer be happening. >> i wouldn't want it to happen to my children, grandchildren or anybody else. >> this is senseless killing for nothing. >> reporter: let's talk a look at the crowds here.

this is a case that has captured nationwide attention. but particular attention here locally. the rally today was organized by the naacp with other groups participating and many people wore hoodies to show solidarity with trayvon martin. mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. all right, thank you very much mike. as a result of this case the maryland black legislative caucus is also asking the department of justice to review stand your ground laws in 21 states that give room for people to use deadly force instead of retreat during a fight. an emotional town hall meeting and rally for trayvon the martin on the streets of sanford florida where a teen was killed walking home. complete coverage continues now with more on the outrage. the parents of trayvon martin gathered with supporters at a church outside of sanford florida to defend their son. >> they've killed my son. and now they're trying to kill his reputation. >> reporter: the unarmed 17- year-old was gunned down last

month in a suburban neighborhood. the shooter, neighborhood watch volunteer george zimmerman claims he fired in self- defense. zimmerman has not been arrested or charged. >> even in death, they are still disrespecting my son. the family lawyer admits trayvon was suspended from school because traces of marijuana were found in his book back. >> whatever trayvon martin was suspended for had absolutely no bearing on what happened. >> reporter: it's been one month since trayvon martin was killed, since then rallies have been held not only here in sanford but throughout florida, new york, throughout the entire country. thousands are expected at another rally today in sanford. and members of martin's family want to question political leaders about the incident about a special city commission. a friend of zimmerman says the incident was not racially

motivated. >> there's a gap between the time that george came out of the vehicle to when the gun went off that we don't know what happened. >> reporter: a special prosecutors has been chosen to take over the case. ray lewis will join the jets antonio holmes along with comedian sinbad at the rally tonight. jessica kartalija is in the newsroom. >> reporter: in less than an hour, the anne arundel council meets. the council issued tier with a subpoena earlier this month but he earlier said he would not testify. the council wants to know what he knew about john leopolds misuse of his police detail. denise. >> all right, thank you jessica. wjz is at the county council

meeting tonight and we'll have more at 11:00. the u.s. supreme court takes up the constitutionality of president obama's health care reform law. it is a closely watched legal battle that could have a big impact on the health care system and the 2012 presidential campaign. danielle nottingham reports for wjz from the supreme court. >> reporter: the heated debate over president obama's health care law reached the steps of the supreme court. hundreds protested outside as the legal justices started hearing three days of testimony as to whether the law is constitutional. monday's session detailed on whether the law should go through in 2014 when the entire law goes into effect. >> there would be no reason to decide the jurisdiction.

>> don't you want to know the answer. >> reporter: a ruling from the high court is expected in june right in the middle of presidential election battle. the decision could have a major impact on both president obama and his gop rivals who have pledged to repeal the law. rick santorum went to the supreme court and pledged to make it the central issue if he's the republican nominee. >> this is the most important issue in this election. people lined up for days for a khaápbs to hear the historic argument. >> i truly believe this law tramples our constitution. >> reporter: the real fireworks are expected tuesday when the justices look at the law which requires americans to buy health insurance by 2014 or pay a fine. two years after the health

care law was enacted a new cbs news poll shows americans continue to be skeptical about its 47% disapprove of the law. maryland takes the political spotlight in tonight's campaign 2012 report, the republican presidential candidates are stopping here ahead of next tuesday's primary election. pat warren is in annapolis where newt gingrich is expected tomorrow. right time, right place and republican presidential candidates are taking advantage of that. in baltimore county and around the state maryland voters cast their election ballots today. >> we still have major issues health wise, education, taxes. and spending just it's too much spending. >> reporter: early voting started saturday, fresh off a visit last week for former massachusetts governor mitt romney who's maryland campaign is headed by former governor

bob ehrlich. newt gingrich is scheduled to visit annapolis next week. former senate's rick santorum's campaign is also penciled in. and ron paul holds a town meeting on wednesday. it's a lot more attention than maryland republicans have come to expect but these are unusual times, but voters are paying close attention. >> whether it's romney or santorum or ron paul or newt gingrich, we have four people. and that's a lot to choose from. and sometimes it's hard. but you have to listen to it all. >> reporter: political analyst richard bats of romney supporters says there's some things to be gained by making a showing here. >> maryland is considered a very, very left winged state. but the republicans even if though you wouldn't know this

coming in from the north 16 here, 21 up in elkton, 25 in pax river. later tonight the winds should die down and that's going to cause some problems with perhaps some freezing conditions. bernadette woods has more on that. >> reporter: the planting season really began early with how warm it's been and unfortunately for those people who did start early, you could face some problems tonight. a freeze warning goes into effect late tonight for almost the entire state. that's because temperatures are going to drop. with those winds dying down. clear skies and dry air on top of us. we're forecasting a low of 32 degrees at vwi marshal. that means outlying areas will drop into the 20s. as far as the city goes probably staying above freezing. this is something we'll track and we'll have the update coming up. back inside. it is march madness for the university of maryland's women's team. a big come back win has the terps on the brink of the final four. mark vivano has more on how far

before we go to weather, we have breaking news. a water rescue is going on. >> reporter: just occurred a

few minutes ago denise. this is in essex. three persons on board a canoe capsized in middle river. they were wearing life jackets but they weren't wearing any survival suit. this water is still quite cold. they are being transported by the fire department now back to shoreline where they can be warmed up. now the assistance here was rendered by the natural resources police. they were the first boats on the scene. they are seeing the canoe that was there. that was capsized and baltimore county police helicopter were also called to the scene to assist in the event they needed to air lift patients. the air rescue is now complete. there are no apparent injuries that we can see. >> thank you very much captain mike perry in sky high 18. >> let's head over to bob to talk about our weather today.

it was very windy. >> forecast advisory. temperatures right now around the region it is beginning to cool down. temperatures were pretty close to normal today. 54 right now, 56 in washington. cold start oakland at 44 degrees. temperatures are beginning to fall here. 50degrees up in bell air. 50 in westminster. the air is very, very dry. so tonight as the wind diminishes, temperatures will begin falling. i don't think the city or any where near the bay will be freezing. north area north of the city, 57 today. 57, 37 are the averages so 37 tonight in the city. it's just about where it's supposed to be. 84 the record high. 21 in 1878. that's pretty chilly. here in the east not much going

people are talking about tonight. hundreds of people joined a march through downtown baltimore in support of trayvon martin, the teenager killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer in florida. mike hellgren has more on tonight's massive rally. >> the rally started here at light and pratt streets at 5:00, the crowds quickly drew as they made their way to stay hall. many of the protesters wore hoodies to show their solidarity with trayvon martin. sky high 13 shows you the scope of the massive crowd here. some of them upset over racial profiling and issues of racial injustice. ben carden spoke at another rally. the senator talking about making racial profiling illegal nationwide and the black caucus also rallied in annapolis. several rallies today. the largest though in downtown baltimore organized by the naacp. the story has captured the nation's attention and particular attention here in

coverage, maryland's primary is one week from tomorrow. a plea deal is in the works for the so called blond bandit. the woman accused of a string of crimes in the region. jessica is live in the newsroom with the very latest on this. >> reporter: thewoman is expected to plead guilty to charges stemming from a string of bank robberies. she was arrested last november after a chase on the capital belt way following a two week crime spree that prompted a search. last thanksgiving, schaub carjacked a woman. the woman's hand was cut during the struggle. police in western maryland are looking for one or more killers tonight. 36-year-old evans was shot to

death in a home in hagu erstown. and an increased reward is being given. the damage was discovered earlier this month but it is unclear when it occurred. nearly $1,300 is now being offered for information leading to an arrest. the company that maybes pink slime a ground beef filler says it is suspending operationals at -- operations at three of its four plants where it is made. the filler known as lean finely textured beef meets food safety standards, but critics say the product could be unsafe and is unappetizing. recently several grocery store chains announced they will stop selling the product in their meat. new research showing

bariatric surgery is being recommended, and not as a last resort. >> reporter: for years, -- had a har time keeping the pound off and controlling his diabetes. >> right after the surgery within about a week or so, i no longer needed the medication for my diabetes at all. >> reporter: the study looked at 150 obese patients with poorly controlled diabetes. patients were given one of two types of weight loss surgery plus medication to treat the disease. a third group just got the medicine. the surgery patients lost more weight than achieved normal blood sugar levels better than the groups just on medication. >> the patients at the end of

one year, they were on an average of less than one medication for their diabetes. in fact, about 40% of the patients were on no medications. their diabetes essentially went away. >> reporter: 26 million adults have diabetes in the u.s. about 30 to 50% of them don't have their diabetes under good control and researchers are saying that for some surgery could make a big difference. but bariatric surgery comes with risks including digestion problems. but he says it was worth it. >> i have more energy than i had before with two little kids running around the house. >> reporter: his diabetes is in remission,teresa garcia. time now for a quick look at some of the stories you will

three people are dead after a three vehicle crash. state police say a dump truck carrying sludge crossed the double line into oncoming traffic. a total of five trucks and a car was involved in the cash. an investigation is ongoing. pope benedict xvi continues his latin american tour with a

stop in cuba. it is the first time a pope has visited the island nation in 14 years. pope benedict will be in cuba for three days, his biggest event in havana will be a mass celebrated in revolution square wednesday. organizers expect tens of thousands to attend. it is unclear if the pope will visit fidel castro during his trip. james cameron dive to the bottom of the ocean is a success. he is back after the dive. it took cameron two hours and 36 minutes to make if trip. while down there he collected samples as part of a national geographic research expedition. he is the third man to reach the bottom but the first to do it alone. he is king of the world. >> i think titanic is coming up in 3d so he's all over the place. scott pelley has a preview of what's coming up tonight on the cbs evening news.
