72-hour procedure, surgeons use a donor skin from the scalp to the neck, including his jaw, tongue, teeth, and facial tissue. >> the team used innovative surgical practices as well as computerized techniques to precisely and i would say amazingly transplant the entire face. >> reporter: over a five-day period, it's estimated 110 experts ranging from anastasessologists, and transplant surgeons all touched the patients. >> it started with me admitting the donor, that's about 20 people that touched that patient. this is the most remarkable thing i have ever seen. >> reporter: since 2005, norris has undergone several procedures but until now hasn't been able to function outside his home. >> putting the muscles back together, redraping the face, making sure the hairline

matched, and reconnecting the tongue. now came the final tailoring which is the connection of the nerves, the muscles, the soft tissue providing this drape of mr. richard norris only six days after his surgical procedure. >> reporter: now norris can talk and brush his teeth thank toss a procedure that's expected to improve the lives of thousands of patients. he's now recovering. five orpiment were able to accept organs from that same donor. >> 22 other face transplants have been performed around the world. the family of a dead teenager takes their fight to capital hill. trayvon martin's parents go before lawmakers. we have more on the case that's caused a national uprising. >> reporter: martin's parents told lawmakers they believe

their son is a victim of racial profiling and they want his killer behind bars. >> and now we will have a moment of silence. >> reporter: the parents of trayvon martin appear in front of lawmakers on capitol hill. >> he's sadly missed and we'll continue to fight for justice. >> of course my heart is broken, but it breaks even more to know that we have not gotten justice yet. >> reporter: their 17-year-old son was shot and killed walking through a gated florida community. the shooter? neighborhood watch volunteer george zimmerman followed the teen. he says he fired in self-defense. >> no justice, no peace. >> reporter: members of a maryland church urged the attorney general to prosecute the case as a hate crime. they believe he was a victim of racial profiling. >> there's a lack of confidence in the local and state officials to do the right thing here. >> reporter: it's sparked

renewed calls for activism across the country. here in baltimore, hundreds took to the streets calling for justice. >> at one point, i had a tear stream from my eye. >> reporter: the organizer said the rally was a first step in a greater movement. >> if we as a community come together, we can make a difference and we can prevent our young people from being the next trayvon martin. >> reporter: the lawyer for the martin family says they appreciate all the support, they just want to make sure the protests remain peaceful. >> thank you very much. george zimmerman claims martin punched him and bashed his head into the sidewalk before the shooting and some witnesses back up that claim. flames have already destroyed 28 homes and burned through 4500 acres outside denver. firefighters found two people dead inside one home and another

woman is still missing. it could be days before those who were evacuated are allowed to return to their homes. a veteran pilot yelling about a bomb on a plane. passengers hold the captain down. we have more for wjz about that in-flight nightmare. >> reporter: jet blue passengers touched down this las vegas six hours late after making an emergency landing in texas. passengers pinned down the captain after the co-pilot locked him out of the cockpit. he exhibited erratic behavior during the flight, he then radioed for flight on the ground. >> we're going to need authorities and medical professionals to meet us at the airport. >> reporter: he was eventually taken off the flight on a cart by security. he's a respected veteran pilot.

one passenger said the flight attendant got on the intercom and asked passengers to restrain the captain. >> he was screaming let me in. very quickly, maybe six or eight big new yorkers basically pinned him to the ground. >> reporter: for passengers in the rear of the plane, there was fear and confusion early on. >> people thought we were being hijacked by the guys who were attacking the pilot. i explained to everybody what was going on. >> reporter: the plane landed in amarillo 25 minutes later. the flight was diverted because of a medical situation involving the captain and that another captain traveling off duty entered the flight deck prior to landing and took over the duties of the ill crew member. the fbi is still investigating what caused the disturbance on flight 191. >> jet blue says the captain was taken to a local medical

facility when the plane landed, but the airline wouldn't say more about the medical condition that may have caused his out burst. newt gingrich shakes up his struggling campaign. he fired several aids tonight, including his chief of staff and he's cutting back on campaign stops. during visits today, he criticized the maryland governor's gas tax proposallable. ron paul will also host a rally in college park tomorrow night ahead of maryland's primary april 3rd. with summer just a few months away, baltimore city neighborhood pools are once again in jeopardy. the city stands to lose 7 of them. why neighbors and some city leaders are outraged. >> reporter: few would argue that pools are a vital part of recreation, especially for young people during the summer. tonight, there are calls for a

compromise over closures. when it's blazing hot in baltimore, nothing cools kids off better than a pool. yet this year as in years past, there may be fewer of them to take a dip. >> it has to be a concern that we're closing any resources for young people. >> reporter: the department of recreation and parks wants to close 7 of 13 walk-to pools this year to save money. a spokesperson for the agency tells us just as the city is facing a budget shortfall, so is recreation and parks. members of the city council tell eyewitness news they have no power to add anything to the mayor's budget. they can only make cuts. they're hopeful she's willing to compromise. recreation and parks tells eyewitness news from inspection to maintenance to staffing, opening and operating a city pool is expensive. >> all of us want to work toward

a good solution for young people in the city. >> reporter: none of the city's six park pools is scheduled for closure. the park pools would have extended hours under the recreation and parks new plan. by the way, pools are scheduled to open memorial day weekend which is may 26th. that's the park pools. >> right. under the recreation and parks plan, the city's three indoor pools would be open during the summer. two local school districts have new superintendents. he was also a finalist for the top job? howard county. that position went to renee. she becomes the first female superintendent for howard schools. how much money can buy happiness? how about $363 million?

ease tensions with the large pay outs. demands for justice grew after bayles was flown out of the country. he's currently being held in kansas. a man storms on to a howard county high school's campus and gets into a fight with a student. we have new reaction to the arrest of a 40-year-old with a long rap sheet. >> hey! >> reporter: police say this video that went viral online was key to identifying and charging this man with second degree assault. he's attacking a 16-year-old student on the long reach high school campus. the student ends up knocking him to the ground. fellow students here are glad cops solved the case. >> i think he's clearly crazy. he should not be on school grounds, especially wearing a ski mask. >> reporter: he had a connection oh to a 15-year-old girl, also

seen on the video. police say she was charged as a juvenile. >> this was really unique because on adult came from off the campus and assaulted a student. >> reporter: authorities listed two addresses, one near the school and another in west baltimore where a next door neighbor says that's out of his character. >> he seemed to be real nice to me. >> reporter: a search of court records revealed he has a long criminal record, including charges for theft, drugs, and resisting arrest. he's been ordered to stay off the campus. he faces a maximum of 10 years in jail if he's convicted. for now, he's been released on bond. >> his next court appearance is scheduled for june 6th. police released dash cam video of a wild pursuit of a

stolen school bus. finally, one officer was able to get close enough to hit the bus causing it to lose control. the officers shot the suspect twice. he is now in custody facing a number of charges. a fight between fans at the university of louisville and the university of kentucky breaks out in an unusual place. it happened between patients at a dialysis center. it didn't take long before words went too far. >> he told me shut up and then gave me the finger. >> i'm sitting there hooked up to a machine. i can't do anything. >> i went up to him and i hit him. i didn't hit him hard, but i hit him. >> ed wilson declined to press charges. he just hopes they don't show up at the same time anymore.
