hi. i'm kai jackson. and i'm mary mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. rain showers soak maryland. heavy downpours soak the area for a time after a very warm morning. wjz found people racing with umbrellas. they're just taking the umbrellas, trying to miss all of the falling water on union avenue. and here's a look at the horizon. it still looks a bit ominous. we're hoping it improves, though. where are the storms now? bob is tracking live doppler radar. bob? >> all of the activity moved through just a short time ago. look at radar. it's south of baltimore and washington now. particularly across northern virginia. eastern shore, light showers.

heavier shower around dover. south of the city around annapolis, moved through the area, just to the west of queenstown. one heavier echo. sun is back out. showers south and west of d.c. that's where most of the action is. and that will continue to move down south and southeast of the region. it appears you folks in southern maryland, this batch west of d.c. that is what we expect to see the heavier showers over the next hour or two. but baltimore region, take a look at our satellite picture. it's cleared out north of town. that front heading through the pennsylvania area this afternoon. and you can see the breaks in the cloud cover. we have clearing skies. looks like a cooler trend, compared to today's low 70s. tomorrow, only in the low 60s. kai? >> bob, thank you. midair meltdown. a jet blue pilot is suspended after suffering a breakthrough. the crew was forced to tackle him. >> reporter: jet blue has

suspended the pilot who caused midair chaos on flight 91. passengers say he had a mental breakdown, running up and down the aisle, screaming there was a bomb and they're going to take us down. the 49-year-old captain became irate after his copilot tricked him to leave the cabin so he could lock him out. >> he was screaming, throttle to idle, we're all going down, we're going to die, pray to jesus. >> reporter: when the copilot cooperate calm him -- couldn't calm him down, the passengers tried. >> four of us just jumped up and grabbed him and, you know, pulled him away from the cockpit door. and he started ranting about iraq, iran, they're going to take us down. >> we had no other options but to physically restrain this visit on the ground until the plane was safely landed. >> reporter: the crew brought

an on-board crew to help with the landing. >> we're going to need priority getting into amarillo. >> reporter: jet blue flight landed safely in texas and osbun was taken into custody. the president of jet blue says he's known osbun for years and nothing in the pilot's record would indicate he would be a risk on a flight. bigad shaban, wjz eyewitness news. >> the passengers on the flight were interviewed in texas, before boarding another plane to las vegas hours later. a knife-wielding man was shot and killed by city police. denise is in the newsroom with circumstances surrounding the first police shooting since new policies went into effect. >> 21-year-old sharon carter jackson was shot when police responded to a family disturbance. officers responded to the 2500 block of coldspring lane, after a 911 call for a person with a weapon. an officer went to the home's front door and says jackson came outside with a knife. city police say jackson was shot several times during a

confrontation with that officer. now, the officer is suspended, but not being identified. according to the agency's new rules, that gives 48 hours to release the officer's name. >> denise, thank you. the city police department's new policy stems from an investigation of a departmental shooting that killed officer william torbit, back in january 2011. it's a symbol of solidarity to trayvon martin, the hooded sweatshirt. but today, it sparks controversy in washington. >> recognizes the gentleman from illinois, mr. rush. >> reporter: the u.s. house of representatives was the scene of the latest trayvon martin protest. >> just because someone wears a hoody does not make them a hoodlum. >> reporter: bob il -- illinois congressman bobby rush wore a hoody to speak out. hats are not allowed. he was escorted off the floor

of congress and reprimanded. >> members need to remove their hoods or leave the floor. >> reporter: trayvon martin was wearing a hooded sweatshirt the night neighborhood watch vol tear george zimmerman shot him. >> i think justice needs to be spoken up for. that's why i'm here. >> reporter: zimmerman has gone into hiding since the shooting. he remains free. but now we're learning sanford police almost arrested him. >> zimmerman said he fired his weapon after martin attacked him. one of the officers wanted to file manslaughter charges but was told there wasn't enough evidence. the case is now in the hands of a special investigator. investigators are looking into witnesses and examining 911 calls. >> so you think he's yelling "help?" >> yes. >> authorities want to know who was yelling for help before the gunshot.

the investigation could take weeks. but demonstrators say they want justice now. in sanford, florida, randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> the investigation into trayvon martin's killing will essentially start from scratch, with the new special prosecutor and team of investigators, quietly interviewing witnesses and examining evidence. ron paul will appear on all 50 ballots. and tonight, he is stumping here in maryland. jessica kartalija is live with more on where ron paul supporters can find him tonight. jessica? >> mary, texas representative and gop candidate ron paul is said to attend tonight. it's 7:00 at the campus of the university of maryland. paul was in last place. the 12-term congressman filed to appear on the ballot in new jersey last night, which gives

him the status of first candidate to have nationwide ballot access. mitt romney is expected to file in new jersey soon, making his 50-state ballot access likely. romney received another key endorsement. former president george h.w. bush is throwing his support behind mitt romney. florida governor jeb bush is also endorsing the former massachusetts governor. maryland's primary election is tuesday, april 3rd. did you get that mary? >> i got it all, jess. it was a lot, though. thank you. stay with wjz for complete coverage of 2012. we'll bring you the latest on the results during the maryland primary. dangerous silicone injections. 45-year-old kimberly insteadly of atlanta admits to giving illegal shots to people in hotel rooms up and down the east coast. some here in baltimore.

she gave the injections to patients to enlarge their buttocks. she faces a maximum of five years in prison. and a $250,000 fine when she's sentenced in july. summertime temperatures are fast approaching. and with that comes news that under the mayor's new budget, many neighborhood pools will not be opening up. monique griego explains why they are in jeopardy. >> reporter: when it's blazing hot in baltimore, nothing cools kids off more than a pool. yet this year, as in years past, there may be fewer of them to take a dip. >> it has to be a concern that we're closing any resources for young people and neighborhood residents. >> reporter: this year, the department of recreation and parks wants to close seven of 13 walk-to neighborhood pools to save money. the city is facing a huge budget deficit. and many of the pools have been neglected for years. >> the ones that have been closed are in disrepair and have a low number of users.

a man steals a school bus, takes police on a wild chase down a new mexico interstate. take a look at this. dash cam captures the man barreling down the highway. the bus continues down the freeway, but not for long.

we have breaking news from eastern baltimore county. captain mike merry in sky eye chopper-- mike perry in sky eye chopper 13 with more. >> we are near the railroad tracks. apparently a school bus was stopping, as per the law at a

railroad crossing when it was rear-ended by another vehicle. there were several children on the bus at the time of the accident. but apparently there were no significant injuries. fire officials did respond to the scene, but they left, apparently, all of the adults and children refusing treatment. the children were loaded onto the other bus, you see the bus on the left in the foreground. the children were loaded onto that bus and they'll continue to their home. police are on the scene. they do have eastern boulevard closed right at chesapeake park. as they're loading the children on for safety reasons. looks like one lane of eastbound eastern boulevard will be affected at chesapeake park. >> thank you, captain mike perry, reporting live. let's go over to bob in the first warning weather center with more on our weather. mix bag out there today, bob. >> brief showers. couple of rumbles of thunder in ricouple of spots. rained here at tv hill for about eight minutes. still a chance of a shower

it is 4:30. partly sunny. 66 degrees. hello. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. >> here's what people are talking about. >> the historic supreme court arguments over president obama's healthcare reform law have ended. today, the justices have looked closely at whether some of the law can hold if part of it is thrown out. >> some supreme court justices seemed open to the idea that healthcare reform can survive, even if they strike down its core. but they asked probing questions questions about what happens to the rest of the law, if they determine the requirement for all americans

to buy insurance is unconstitutional. >> my approach is, if you take the heart identity of the statute -- out of the statute, the statute is gone. >> dozens are calling for the court to throw out the whole law. >> it needs needs to go back to congress. even if there are good provisions in the bill. >> reporter: the court also spent this third and final day of argument, looking into the section of the law, requiring states to expand their medicare program. >> many families take for granted their health. but there are low-income families that don't. >> state leaders argue the federal government has no right to force them to expand their state medicaid program. and spend millions of dollars that aren't in the budget. but the obama administration points out, the law says the federal government would cover the bill for new medicaid patients through 2016. and after that, it would pay 90% of those costs.

at the supreme court, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, the justices are expected to issue their rulings in the cases they heard this week in june. the world trade center is slowly coming back to life in lower manhattan. kai is live in the newsroom with more on a major milestone. kai? >> vic, workers switch on a massive power system at the site. it will eventually provide electricity to the signature skyscraper. a transit hub and the memorial and museum. the feeders will supply 100 megawatts to the site. that's enough juice to power typical apartments. the unfinished one world trade center is one of the city's towellest structures. -- tallest structures. >> this past marked the 9/11 attacks. teresa garcia reports for wjz, the wildfire has killed an elderly couple and the search is on for a missing woman. >> reporter: planes are

dropping fire retardant on the wildfire outside of denver for a second day. winds have been light. >> we're hopeful that this is going to be a good day. the air support, lots of firefighters on the ground and good weather conditions. >> reporter: the u.s. forest service is now in charge are the operation. -- of the operation. and more firefighters are arriving to build containment lines. around the st center of the blaze. >> they have been coming in from all over the country. lots of firefighters. local firefighters from across the state. >> reporter: a search-and- rescue team has been brought in to find the woman, missing since the fire started. she lives in a severely damaged area. at least 28 homes have already been destroyed. and another 900 evacuated. >> do what we can to take care of those folks who lost so much. >> reporter: the red cross set up in the high school. >> we've had many residents come by for a hot cup of coffee. three meals a day, snacks, as well as the information that is there.

>> we're all worried, especially knowing it's that close to our homes. >> reporter: the fire appears to be the result of a controlled burn that was started last week. teresa garcia, wjz eyewitness news. >> people living in another 6500 homes have been put on standby, in case they have to evacuate. >> exotic animal owners are fighting against new permit fees and caging requirements. the measure would ban new ownership of lions, tigers, and other exotic animals. current owners could keep their permits until 2013. the new permits, they say, is too expensive. authorities were forced to kill almost all of the animals that escaped from a farm. mare selive in the newsroom with more on how much we're shelling out now. >> well, vic, there is no letup in the rising price of gas. right now, triple a reports the national average rose to $3.99. that is the 19th consecutive increase. here in maryland, people are

paying an average of $3.94. that's up a cent from yesterday. and 5 cents cents from just last week. it is 26 cents more than we paid a month ago. and 36 cents more than this time last year. gas prices are up nearly 19% for the year. but still lower than the record high of $4.11, back in july 2008. back to you. >> more than two-thirds of americans disapprove of the way president barack obama is handling high gas prices. although most don't blame him for them. that is according to a new reuters online poll. it has turned into a wet day for maryland. the rain is over for most of the state. and the sun is out. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob has the updated numbers. it didn't rain longer. came through fast. and moved through quickly. there are showers still around. take a look at radar. much of it now across southern portions of the region. southern maryland and a little activity on the eastern shore

country music trio, lady antebellum is giving in storm- ravaged. it will be followed by a

benefit concert, open to the public. henryville was one of the hardest-hit towns when a wave of tornadoes hit earlier this month, killing 13 people. proceeds will go to a local disaster relief fund. two people are injured after a car and tanker truck collide in texas. the driver was unable to make it out and died at the scene. the driver of the car and the passenger were transported to a nearby hospital. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. it started as a peaceful protest for a slain teen. now, dozens of teens upon are wanted by police. jessica kartalija has more on what happened at a memorial for trayvon martin. >> dozens of high schoolers ransacked a miami walgreens. this was the scene as teens flooded into that store. police say they were all part of the students who staged a walkout in memory of trayvon martin. the teen was shot to death last

loses her finger after it accidentally cut off. now, they are suing the hospital and the nurse involved. >> it's really hard that she -- that she was born so perfect. and they just -- that she just cut off her finger. and now: now she's -- now she only has nine fingers. >> reporter: every time veronica looks her her daughter's left pinky, she's reminded of that day, october 11th. >> i literally wake up atinate, because i dream of everything that happened. everything goes through my mind. >> reporter: the 15-year-old mother says after a three-day stay for high fever and bronckitis, her 3-month-old daughter is ready to go home. she sits selina on her lap. and veronica says the nurse

cuts too far. >> there was blood everywhere. it was all over her shirt, my shirt, my face. and i mean she was ready -- red, screaming. and i looked at her hand. she didn't have her finger anymore. i started screaming that, her finger, her finger. and that's when she panicked and threw the scissors. >> reporter: veronica said doctors picked the finger tip off the floor, sent them to tgh but the finger could not be reattached. >> the family is suing for psychological damages that selina may suffer growing up. but this is about making sure this does not happen to another child. >> reporter: regardless of the legal outcome, veronica says her daughter will forever wear someone else's mistrach. >> reporter: following -- mistake. >> reporter: following the incident, the hospital released a statement. an unfortunate accident happened. they go on to say we deeply
