the rug. >> reporter: in the police report, officers did right by reporting that he was bloody. afterwards, authorities let him go. that decision continues to stir protests around the country. and the national media are now camped out in sanford, covering the story around the clock. >> reporter: sanford police are warning reporters they could be arrested for stalking if they contact city employees outside. working hours. >> reporter: george zimmerman has gone into hiding since the shooting, but his father is talking for the first time. former judge robert zimmerman said his son acted in self- defense. he said the teen continued to beat george and george pulled out a pistol and did what he did. a neighbor called 911. >> there's gunshots. >> reporter: state authorities are listening to that call and examining this video.

but they say the investigation could take weeks. in sanford, florida, wjz eyewitness news. >> zimmerman is a neighborhood watch volunteer and said he was following martin because he looked suspicious and there had been robberies in the neighborhood. she killed her five children by drowning them in the bathtub. and today, andrea yates wants some time away from a psychiatric hospital. jessica has more on where she wants to go. >> reporter: andrea yates wants her doctor to ask the judge for a weekly two-hour pass to go to church. yates drowned her children, one by one in the family bathtub in 2001. she had to chase the last child through the house and drag him to the bathtub. yates was sentenced to murder and life in prison. an appeals court overturned that decision and sent her to a mental hospital. yates' attorney says he expects the judge to grant her request. >> it's important not just for

her spiritual needs but also to acclimate her to the outside world. >> reporter: he says he expects yates to eventually rejoin society after years of treatment for a mental illness. >> reporter: yates' husband rusty has since remarried and started another family. family members and friends wait to hear what caused a local student to collapse and die while jogging on the track. students are wearing pink today to remember the student. prince george's county police say she was jogging yesterday during gym class. when she collapsed, she died. counselors are on hand to help students deal with the loss. we'll have much more coming up live at 5:00 and 6:00. a jury is seated in the trial of twins accused of setting a pit bull on fire. travers and tremain johnson are accused of forcing an accelerant on a dog and

>> reporter: new figures from the cdc now estimate one in 88 children in the united states has an autism spectrum disorder. a 25% increase from 2006. experts say a number of factors may contribute to the increase. >> better recognition, greater awareness, inclusion of milder cases, and of course, there's always the possibility that there's a true rise in incidents. and if there is, that is shotgun that has-- something that has to be better investigated. >> reporter: autism is almost five times more common in boys than girls. >> reporter: the study also finds more children are being diagnosed by age 3. but 40% of kids still aren't diagnosed until after they're 4. >> reporter: with both her daughter and her 5-year-old son on the autism spectrum, florence remy says early intervention made all the difference. >> i have my daughter speaking to me. she understands. she plays.

really, a nice day outside there. beautiful. >> beautiful day, bernadette. >> it's amazing how many we've had. >> it really is just absolutely incredible. now, today's issue is the winds. but they're not all that bad. temperature-wise, they still let us get above average. we're at 62ing degrees for our high so far today. you can see that average continues to creep up. but it's still in the 50s, even though we have been so far above it this month. we're 61 now. and across the map, you see a lot of 60s to our south and east. 50s to the north and west. here's what we were talking about. it has been up this afternoon. generally 10 to 21 miles per hour, with gusts even higher than that. and that northet westerly wind is bringing in cooler air for tonight. i want to show you this huge map here because -- notice this division. there is cold air to the north.

but there's really warm air just off to our south. and we're right in between the two. as this these fronts go through the next couple of days, we're going to pull down the colder air occasionally. and we're going to bring up that warmer air. that's what we're looking at for this forecast. for tonight, that colder air does come in. and because. that, a frost advisory is in effect. northern tier county here, as you go farther west into garrett county, we have a freeze warning in effect for the overnight hours. as we head into tomorrow afternoon, we've recovered pretty nicely once again. here's the next one that we'll be talking about. it's still out to our west and still gabing some -- gaining some strength. we'll see clouds coming in during the day tomorrow. then rains friday night into saturday. that gets out of here. and we may have another one sunday afternoon, with a chance for a few showers. but here's that first one. it's very elongated. and on sunday, the chance again for another little front to come through. and a couple of showers with it. but all the while, temperatures remain above average. so the forecast is like this on

it is 4:29. 61 degrees and sunny. hello. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. vic is off and here's what people are talking about. a jet blue pilot faces prison time. susan mcginnis reports for wjz. people who know osbun say this incident is totally out of character. >> reporter: the jet blue pilot passengers had to pin down in midair has been charged with interfering with a flight crew. a federal affidavit states

captain clayton osbun became incoherent tuesday while at the controls and turned off the plane's radios. according to documents, the 49- year-old then told the pilot, we need to take a leap of faith and we're not going to vegas. >> we're going to have to go into amarillo, declare an emergency. >> reporter: realizing there was a problem, the copilot locked the captain out of the cockpit. mark saluke was sitting in the front row. >> i'm looking at this happening. and he's getting more and more violent. >> reporter: when the incident escalated, he started to subdue the captain. >> he started yelling, throttle to idle, throttle to idle, bring this plane down, al qaeda is here. >> reporter: the fbi is investigating. jet blue has suspended osbun. he has been with them 12 years and has no disciplinary record. >> reporter: fred says he has known osbun for 10 years. >> he was just an all-around

good fella. >> reporter: walker says this incident was out of character and that pilots deal with a lot of pressure. >> they stress in flying, especially when you got 200 people sitting behind you, depending on you. >> reporter: when the flight landed in texas tuesday, security restrained osbun. and he's reportedly undergoing a mental health evaluation, at this texas facility. in washington county, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, captain osbun faces up to 20 years behind bars and a $250,000 fine if he is convicted. a man tries to board a plane in philadelphia with explosives. the tsa says the man was stopped at a security checkpoint, after they found a bottle, containing pyrotechnic powder and three m-80 type fireworks. police are questioning the 29- year-old man but say it's unlikely he did not check his luggage before the flight. a colorado family barely escapes a wildfire. kai is in the newsroom with the

video. >> take a look. the video you're about to see gives us a firsthand look at the dangerous colorado wildfire. >> mom, what are you stopping for? >> down there. >> 13-year-old caleb gould shot the video in the car with his father, as his family and two cars split from the flame tuesday. his younger sister became scared when her mother pulled over to turn on her light and she couldn't see her. the entire family escaped unharmed. sadly, their neighbor, an elderly couple, died after their home caught fire. denise? >> thank you. the wildfire started as a controlled burn before it spread out of control. the university of california will release a report on the pepper spraying of student demonstrators. this took place at uc davis. a judge rules the university must first remove most officers' names before they issued that report.

and the report cannot be released for at least 21 days to give officers a chance to appeal. the report was produced by a task force, created to investigate the november crackdown on occupy protestors at the uc davis campus. the lawyer for the u.s. soldier accused of killing 17 afghan civilians says his client has ptsd symptoms. army staff sergeant robert bales tells his legal team he suffers severe nightmares. flashbacks of war scenes and persistent headaches after his multiple combat tours. earlier this month, the soldier allegedly gunned down nine afghan children and eight adults as they slept. two explosions hit baghdad, as arab leaders met to discuss the conflict in syria. tina kraus has the latest for wjz. >> reporter: two blasts hit baghdad, as arab foreign ministers gathered for the first arab league summit in iraq. there were no injuries.

iraqi officials are hosting the event to prove the country can maintain security, after u.s. troops left in december. only 10 of 22 arab league members are taking part. many leaders disagree on how far arab countries should go to stop the violence in neighboring syria. >> there's no time to waste. >> reporter: secretary general ban-ki moon, says syrian president, bashar assan must act quickly on the u.n.-backed peace plan he has agreed to. the deal demands a cease-fire but drops the call for assan to step down. the sunni power is pushing for tough action to isolate syria and stop the violent, one-year crackdown. but iraq's shiite prime minister is urging caution, saying forcing assad out could spark sectarian violence, similar to what happened in iraq, after saddam hussein was toppled. tina kraus, wjz eyewitness news.

>> u.n. officials say more than 9,000 people have died in syria's year-long battle. a major medical manufacturer recalls 93,000 artificial hips worldwide. the company, depew, says metals from the implants can seep into the bloodstream. that's linked to an increased cancer risk, problems with eyesight and hearing and other complications. and it's not just hips. according to an investigation by consumer reports, most medical implants have never been tested for safety. well, from "r" to "unrated." a controversial film "bully," means more underaged moviegoers can see it. >> he's not safe on that bus. >> i've been on that bus. >> they are just as good as cold. >> reporter: it's the real-life story of five kids who have been pushed around, tormented, and families who have suffered from their child's suicide. the film "bully ," looks at the cruel world of bullying, and

holds nothing back. >> i haven't seen it. but it sounds very important to me and very right. and with a great message. >> reporter: carol isner's son was bullied in middle school, so she believes the topic is worth exploring. but the motion picture association of america gave the film an r-rating because of profanity. that didn't sit well with the filmmakers. the weinstein company, because the "r" rating would make it more difficult for children to see it. >> the language in this movie is the language that kids hear every day in school. >> reporter: after a bitter fight with the mpaa, the weinstein company decided to release the film without a rating. the mpaa released this statement. the mpaa believes this film raises an important conversation on the subject of bullying in our nation's schools and respects the right of the weinstein company to release this film unrated. now, a surprising decision by amc theaters, anyone under the age of 17 can attend with a

syrian government forces don't appear to be giving up their fight against opposition groups, despite president bashar alsad's acceptance of a peace plan. this is amateur video, it shows shelling at homes. the peace plan calls for the immediate withdrawal of troops and heavy weapons from cities. the u.n. estimates more than 9,000 people have been killed in the uprising over the past year. a teenager in florida is facing life behind bars, without parole, after being found guilty of murdering two british tourists. a jury convicted 17-year-old sean pison in the fatal shootings of 25-year-old james cooper. and 24-year-old james caczaras. the two were vacationing in sarasota last april when they got lost and wandered into a housing project where tyson lived.

witnesses testified that tyson intended to rob them but shot them instead. deputies spend hours looking for a missing california teen but there is still no sign of her this afternoon. the community is not giving up hope. >> reporter: ron shofficer is one of dozens of volunteers that came to search for sierra lamar, one day after this was changed from missing person to involuntarily missing. >> i have a 16-year-old boy. i will not let this happen to my boy. >> reporter: today's turnout of 100 is far fewer than the almost 600 that showed up yesterday. >> law enforcement is doing their job. and they're so good at it. and now we need the community to come forward. we need to find sierra and bring her home. >> reporter: today's search includes areas along coyote creek in the area of anderson lake and dam. >> just hope we can find a clue to where she's at. >> reporter: 15-year-old sierra went missing on march 16th, after leaving her house to catch the school bus.

earlier, she had sent out a tweet, in which she was wearing a shirt, similar to one that was found neatly folded in her purse, about two miles from her home along santa teresa boulevard. her cell phone was found a few feet off of the same roadway. >> it keeps changing, every day. so who knows? hopefully we find something today. >> reporter: searchers are now hoping to cover a 20-mile radius around sierra's home, within the next four days. >> god bless her family. and [ inaudible ] >> volunteer searchers say they will continue to meet in a local elementary school, every morning through sunday. an alleged victim takes the stand in the pennsylvania priest abuse trial. jessica kartalija is in the newsroom with more on the shocking testimony. jess? >> reporter: a philadelphia woman described feeling helpless and trapped when she said a priest molested her in the 1990s. monsignor lynn is charged with trying to cover up the incident

and others like it. letters show lynn felt a priest should not return to ministry because of the risk to the archdiocese. but prosecutors say there is no mention of the potential harm to children or the need to contact police. denise? >> reporter: thank you, jessica. that same priest remained in the ministry until 1980. and taught latin at a mane line public school in 2004. a delay to the start of the jerry sandusky sex abuse trial. a short time ago, a judge overseeing the case postponed the start of the trial by three weeks. defense lawyers have filed a motion to have all 52 charges pending against sandusky dropped. sandusky denies the allegations. the trial is now set to begin june 5th. a speeding driver pops the curb, crashing into the front porch of a house in ohio. after the man crashed, police say he got out of the truck, stripped his clothes off, and started tracing a woman around the neighborhood. an ex-marine who lives nearby was able to restrain him until officers arrived. in the end, no one was hurt.

that pinch you're feeling at the pump, is creating a political showdown in washington. and today, democrats hit a major pothole. , liz beth coradon reports for wjz. if it feels like every time you're going to the gas station, you're paying more, you're probably right. according to triple a, the national average for a gallon of regular -- seven inen it people say rising gas prices are creating an economic hardship. nearly half believe they'll be paying $5 a gallon sometime this year. and the majority are putting the blame on oil companies. last year, they raked in nearly $133 billion in profits. >> american oil is booming. the oil industry is doing just fine. >> reporter: thursday, president obama gave a final push for his initiative to end subsidies to the biggest oil companies. >> instead of giving it to a tax industry that has never been more profitable, we should be using that money to double

down on investments in clean energy technologies that have never been more promising. >> reporter: senate republicans were not convinced and blocked the democratic-sponsored bill. >> senate democrats ask us all to come out here, not so we can make an actual difference in the lives of working americans and families struggling to fill the gas tank. but so we can watch them stage votes for show. >> reporter: opponents of the plan argue repealing subsidies will not force gas prices lower, leaving helpless drivers to wonder if there is any hope in sight to their predicament at the pump. i'm elizabeth coradon reporting. right now, a gallon of regular costs about $3.96 here in maryland. that's up nearly 26 cents from this time last month. and 39 cents more than we were paying this time last year. barbie is shedding her gold locks for a good cause. mattel is adding a bald barbie to its lineup starting next year. the dogs will come with wigs

ooh, boy. i guess, what did you say? calvert hall? i hope they took their allergy medicine. because the only complaint i have about this stellar day is,

whoo, if you sneeze, you're sneezing today. >> that's for sure. but it is the season for baseball right around the corner. and we have the home opener coming up just next week. so that's some great news for everybody, i think. okay. as far as temperatures go. we warmed up again this afternoon. we got into the 60s. so once again, we are above average. and that trend continues. 62 degrees, our high so far. and even though that average climbs, it is still in the 50s. now, our average low is 37. we haven't spent much time this month in the 30s, but we are heading down there tonight. at this point, though, 61 degrees right now in baltimore. has dropped down into the 40s in oakland. but south and east of the city, we are still in the 60s. to the gusty northwest wind, which is bringing in cooler air, temperatures right now, as we saw, still above average. but with these wind gusts close to 30 miles per hour at times today, the colder air is going to arrive tonight. as winds will die down and we've got the clear skies, all ingredients to a chilly night. for us, we're looking at a low close to that seasonal average. north and west of the city,

that has prompted a frost advisory. out west, a freeze warning in effect. and that's just for those overnight hours. tomorrow morning, our temperatures do go back up again into the 60s. now, there is that division. you notice upstream, there is cold air. it's there. and as these fronts go through, and we tap into some of that colder air. but just downstream from that, here is a lot of warm air once again. it's still out there in the country. and occasionally, we're going to tap into that. the next front moving our way, will keep us at about 60 for our high. but eventually bring warmer air our way. here's that next front. it is just out to the west. doesn't have that much to it at this point. but as it moves in tomorrow, clouds increase. then chance for rain tomorrow and friday. after that front gets out of here on sunday, we're going to see that. then sunday, we're going to have another front come our way, in the afternoon with a chance for another couple of showers. here's how that looks for the forecast. we have small craft advisories in effect for a couple of hours. but those winds will die down.

then the winds will pick up tomorrow night as that front comes in. forecast for tonight. mainly clear skies. seasonably chilly. then tomorrow, we are back up to 60. increasing clouds, chance for rain. that will carry into saturday. another chance sunday afternoon, for a couple of showers. then another warmup follows all of that. and we'll have that wrapped up in your five-day in just a little bit here. >> oh, boy. it is stellar today. >> it is incredible. >> i mean, the light. everything is blooming. >> just beautiful. if i could just see it. a medical emergency on a high school running track. >> the investigation into a student's sudden death. >> hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> rushed from school to the hospital. students are in shock after their 17-year-old classmate falls over during gym class. and then they find out she later dies. wjz is live at the school in prince george's county. mike hellgren has more on exactly what happened and the trivia tonight to the victim. mike? >> reporter: and mary, she had so much promise, she was a straight a student and getting ready to go to college in the baltimore area in the fall. we know of no preexisting health conditions that led to her collapse on the track here behind me. >> reporter: heartbroken classmates released pink balloons on the tracks at sarotsville, in honor of taca tacayat.
