at a religious university in oakland, california. hello, everybody, i'm denise denise koch. as many as five people are dead on a college campus. andrea fujii is in the newsroom. >> reporter: a short time ago, oakland police confirmed five people have been filled and they have just taken the suspected gun man into custody. swat teams flooded the campus and students were told to lock themselves inside wherever they are. the first 911 call came in around noon today. a motive is unclear. according to its website, it offers attitudies in theology, nursing, music and asian medicine. >> wjz of course is closely

monitoring the situation. we will bring you updates as soon as we get them. today's other big story, who has the winning big ticket? one in three of the $646 million record jackpot sold in baltimore county. mike hellgren reports on a possible lucky laid hear. >> reporter: the winner here in maryland of the world's biggest jackpot is causing some big drama. if you believe that report in the "new york post". the post says a haitian immigrant and single mother of 7 bought the winning ticket sold in maryland at a 7-eleven bought in maryland county. the post reports marilyn wilson works at a mcdonald's and her co-workers are upset because she was buying tickets as a part of a pool. she claims the winning ticket was one she bought separately for herself. wjz has spoken several times to lottery officials who will not confirm this report. they say there have been fum reduce april fool's day stories and false word of winners.

unexplained and the other. >> reporter: witnesses say an older model silver or white box style car hit him. the car did not stop. a few hours later, time coyer's body was found in his apartment. police say his death does not appear to be suspicious. both young men were members of a fraternity on campus. >> we'll have the latest on both of these deaths coming up at five and six. a coast guard cutter carrying two badly injured sailors is expected to reach san francisco this afternoon. they were rescued from a racing yacht in the pacific overwhelmed by a giant wave. >> reporter: they are the kind of boats most sailors dream of, 68 feet of pure wind blown beauty but for the crew that dream became a nightmare. two members of the crew, 50- year-old doctor and 29-year-old software engineer had to be rescued by the coast guard late

sunday night after being injured in a storm so violent, it ripped the helm clean off the boat's deck. they were participating in the clipper around the world yacht race, the longest of its kind for amateurs, some 40,000 miles. but the leg across the north pacific was the hardest and the gerald's crew was apprehensive before it began. >> they're slightly nervous about it. >> reporter: on saturday, the fleet of racing boats hit a storm, the likes of which many had never seen. >> you almost want to give up but none of these guys gave you were. >> reporter: it was the jell ton who took it the hardest. a mon trous foaming as well swept the deck and left them temporarily adrift. the weather remained so bad for post of sunday, rescuers could

only air drop medical supplies to the injured sailors below. it wasn't until just before dusk last night the injured sailors were taken aboard a coast guard cutter for safety. after some repairs, the boat will continue competition. she was built for racing and it seems so is her crew. well, one of the sailors has broken ribs, the other is suffering from a back injury. mid air meltdown, the jet blue pilot who sparked a security scare in flight makes his first court appearance. clayton osbun is being held without bond in federal custody. he's facing charges of interfering with a flight crew. the pilot had a breakdown last week in the cockpit of a plane. a judge will decide later this week to post bail for osbun. newt gingrich returns to maryland hours before our primary election begins. in tonight's campaign 2012 report, mitt romney is sounding confident he will face president obama in november.

a rescue effort in russia saves the lives of hundreds of trapped fishermen. officials say 675 people were

ice fishing when the ice floe drifted out to sea. it took emergency rescuers several hours to rescue all the fishermen. no injure questions were reported the -- no injuries were reported. oprah winfrey appeared on cbs this morning. >> reporter: after 25 years on daytime tv, the queen of talk opens up about her new life and new net work on the cbs morning show. oprah winfrey told hosts charlie rose and her best friend gayle king that the own cable network would struggle to lure viewers and recently cut staffers to save money, still in a building phase. >> if i knew then what i knew now, i might have made some different choices. i would say if if i were writing a book about it, i could call the book 101 mistakes. >> reporter: oprah said one of the mistakes was launching while she still had her talk

real live sunken treasure. >> reporter: this 6th grade class cleans oakland's lake merritt every thursday. on their last sweep, they really cleaned up. >> i heard screaming so i ran over and saw what was in the bag and i was just like oh, my god sthis really happening? >> reporter: this is no joke. a bag full of watches, silver and antique jewelry, 6th grade teacher susan porter heads up this students who cleans the lake as a learning project. >> i teach the kids that they do a lot all year long with watershed education and the effects of the politics of you got something so great, why do we want to trash it like that, why can't we clean it up. >> we normally find things like cigarette butts or old potato chip bags. or shoes, clothing items. >> reporter: the canvas bag full of the mystery treasure was found hidden right below

perfect. that would be my stamp on today. absolutely perfect weather >> i got to agree with you. this has got to be a top 10 day. we have to expand that to 20 or 30, we've had so many top 10 days. sunshine returning, a breeze out of the north, the humidity has gone really low, and a high of 59 degrees. you can see the average now as of today has climbed up to 60, so slightly below average but very close to it. here are the numbers at this point. 59 degrees in baltimore right now, 61 in cumberland, 61 also in d.c. else where are in the upper 50s. with the northerly wind it has brought in cooler air but it's tonight we'll feel the difference because the temperatures will be dropping as the temperatures dip down. we have frost advisories for these counties here. freeze warnings for those in

effect in the over night hours. there's another round of extreme heat and i use that term because we have seen a couple of 90s this afternoon across the south. the thing is that we're not really going to get in on that like we had the last couple of times because we're also combatting that with air that's pretty chilly off to our north. we saw some showers move through, they have gotten out of here and tomorrow another front is going to try to take that track in our direction. it will draw some warmer air with it but not quite what we're seeing down to the south and southwest. clouds start to mix in during the day tomorrow and then a chance for a couple of showers on wednesday. not a whole lot of moisture with this storm system as it moves through but as it skirts by maryland, it keeps the extreme warmth down south of maryland. small craft advisories are still in effect but the winds will be dying down overnight.

here's a live look at the scene right now. police say they have detained one possible suspect and looking interest the possibility there was -- into the pocket there was one more shooter. an update from california coming up new at five. we have new insight to the controversial shooting of trayvon martin. . >> each and every one of you mean so much to us to see you all here. >> reporter: five weeks after trayvon martin was killed, his mother, sabrina fulton, thanked a crowd in miami for the support. strangers showed up by the thousands to show their support. >> i have to make an effort and come out because this totally upsets me. >> reporter: the case has sparked questions nagts wide about whether race played a role in the killing. george zimmerman insists he shot martin in self-defense

after the teen attacked him. but several relatives, including his brother, do not accept that story. >> it's baffling how people, they just take his word for it as if that's exactly what happened and no question about it. >> reporter: a knewly released emergency -- newly released emergency dispatch recording is offering more details into the shooting. >> en route to the shooting. >> reporter: the tape shows a second ambulance sent to the scene was called off, bringing the severity of zimmerman's injuries into question. >> [ indiscernible ]. >> reporter: over the weekend, activists marched on the for police department demanding zimmerman be jailed. protesters echoed the calls in miami. more proof that passions stirred up by this case show no signs of fading. >> the f.b.i. is kungting a parallel investigation into the shooting. they will focus on whether

trayvon martin's civil rights were violated. we're learning more today what will happen to the crippled costa concordia in italy. >> officials say the ship will be rerighted and refleted in the biggest -- floated in the biggest operation of its kind. teams of engineers will work around the clock for a year to refloat the ship. back in january, the costa concordia ran aground off the coast with more than 4,000 people on board, 32 people were killed. divers are still trying to locate the bodies of two victims. the ship captain is now charged with manslaughter and causing a ship wreck. back to you, vic. >> the captain remains on house arrest. a major milestone today for an indiana town devastated by huge tornadoes last month. henryville high school students headed back to class today for the first time since the storm. a month ago, a pair of funnel clouds ripped through the town damaging hundreds of buildings

and destroying the school. tragic end to a family vacation in kansas, police say five people were killed when a mobile home collided with a highway guardrail. red chapman has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: the truck smashed into pieces upon impact. pictures from the air showed debris scattered about the ravine it came to rest in. according to the kansas state patrol, the vehicle had a guardrail and a concrete bridge rail before flipping over and dropping down a ravine 30 feet. the box truck was carrying 18 people and pulling a trailer when it crashed about nine this morning just outside williamsburg, kansas, off interstate 35. five people died, 13 others were injured. a family member confirmed that the mobile home belonged to the bkirber. three children decided to stay in minnesota while the others

plus close family friends made their annual trek to san antonio for vacation fun that included moto cross bike riding. pauline's husband glen died about five years ago. he's the one that introduced the family to motocross racing and it was his dying wish to keep the children involved in the sport. adam kirber is seen here and has won many trophies and is possibly on his way to a professional racing career. he shared the video with us before making the trek to kansas to support the family. >> that was red chapman reporting. police say a 17-year-old boy with a provisional driver's license was behind the wheel when the vehicle crashed. an investigation is ongoing. the cost of gas stays steady over the weekend but don't expect it to stay that way. today the national average for a gallon of regular is 3.92. last month, the same gas cost $3.75. according to triple a, 11 states have already hit the $4 mark and they expect several more to reach that price in

several weeks. we're already paying more than the national average. drivers are paying about $3.97 for a gallon of regular, $0.27 more than we were paying a month ago. howard county drivers appear for a speeding problem. according to the police department, the speeding camera program caught more than 6,000 speeding drivers. that translated into more than $180,000 in fines. supporters say it's still too early to know if the cameras led to slower driving habits. recycle more is the challenge from the governor. the state employees are now in competition with each other. >> reporter: sean stinnett is one of thousands of state employees participating in the governor's new initiative to recycle. >> we think as far as giving back and be able to reuse a lot of items. >> reporter: it's meant to challenge workers to outdo each other. >> we are distributing these

cardboard boxes so the people can keep them right on their desks if they want. >> reporter: teams in different departments will be in competition to see who can recycle the most and no one is exempt. >> i'll be in the competition, too. my team will include workers in the state house, shaw house, and the jeffrey building. >> reporter: by law, state agencies are required to recycle at least 20% of their waste. this challenge hopes to get it up to 30. the challenge was announced on lawyer's mall in annapolis in front of school children in hopes it will encourage them as well. >> you don't have to be an adult to make a big difference. a kid can make a difference, too. >> reporter: as with any contest, it may get a little dirty. >> i know we're going to do a little trash talking threw the two months. >> the challenge is just in central maryland right now but extend to the entire -- but will extend to the entire state by the end of the year.

a very sunny afternoon on the first week of april. we are here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. bernadette, what's going on? >> it is spectacular out there. we have a bit of a breeze out of the north and that will bring colder air for tonight. right now, we're coming in at 59 degrees in baltimore, 63 in cumberland. upper 50s to low 60s around the entire region. 56 in westminster and in belair but tonight the temperatures are going down and because of that frost advisory and freeze warnings are in effect, but we get even warmer for tomorrow. we'll have the forecast, vic. let's check in on the roads with kristy breslin. >> as far as delays go, nothing too bad. we have a minor delay on the west side in the inner loop. also a couple of brake lights on northbound 95. that's from russell street over to the belt way on that northeast side. it should only hold you up about five to ten minutes. as far as accidents go, westbound 40 at saint agnes

more than 30 people killed after a fiery plane crash in russia. authorities say the plane was trying to make an emergency lanning when it hit the ground and burst into flames. five are in critical condition. investigators say they lost contact with the plane about three minutes after takeoff. a bold move from lawyers representing anders breivik. the defense will call a muslim cleric to the stand. breivik has confessed to killing 77 people in a bombing in norway but denies criminal guilt saying the attacks were part of an antimuslim revolution. three of osama bin laden's

widows are convicted for living in pakistan illegally. >> reporter: the three widows have been in pakistani custody since the u.s. navy seals raided the compound and killed the al qaeda leader last year. after serving 45 days, the women will be deported back to yemen. . >> thank you, very much, andrea. two of bin laden's daughters were sentenced to 45 days in prison. we're learning more about the 2009 disappearance of susan powell. her husband, josh, killed himself and their children in washington state last month. as josh hum bert reports, he was the only suspect. >> reporter: in late 2009, police in west valley utah found a trophy of evidence that could -- trove of evidence that could have linked josh powell to the disappearance of his wife.

police found two fans were set up and blowing on the living room sofa that appeared to have just been cleaned. a day later near that sofa, they found blood evidence was located on the tile floor next to the carpet. tests on this blood indicated it was susan powell's. police also discovered a chilling set of papers in a salt lake city safe deposit box owned by susan. even though she had used the box twice, the warrants say at the time she wrote how she does not trust her husband and he has threatened to destroy her if they get divorced. it ends with an ominous warning that if susan powell dies, it may not be an accident even if it looks like one. sources reveal that josh powell changed his story several times and he hid sim cards for cell phones that could have been used as evidence. the search has caught powell's father in a web of child porn. they found multiple tapes and

media said to contain pornography images of children in the family's puyallup home. detectives have warndz that revealing the -- warned that revealing the investigation could have jeopardized the investigation because the pouls were so -- powells were so high profile. a denver news anchor is back at work now after she's bit nn the face by a rescue dog on tv. denver's kyle dyer was attacked by a mass tiff in january. the bites were so deep she needed more than 90 stitches and had surgery to heal them. in today's health watch, the centers for disease control estimates that 1 in 88 children have autism and experts say the best thing parent can do is educate themselves about the

we're well into ving and green is -- spring and green is popping out everywhere and we have the winds today. >> it is going to bring koerld air for tonight but -- colder air for tonight but look at all the green out there. that's the difference. we've been warm for a while, most of this winter, but we haven't had all that greenery to go along with it, so it's a big change. as far as temperatures go, we topped out at 59 degrees today and it's just below the average which has now jufrmdz to 6o -- jumped to 60 degrees. we started at # 4 but we're -- 44 but we're going down below that in most cases tonight. 63 in cumberland, 61 in d.c. here are the gusty northwest winds, they've been gusting up to 20 miles per hour but they will calm down tonight. the cold air that ha prompted -- has prompted frost warnings and freeze advisories for tonight. there's another round of record warmth going on off to the northeast.

that's where the colder air has been and it's creeping more to the south, so even though we're cooling down, we're not getting what's off to our north. and we're not going to get into this, either. we're going to be in between the two. we had the showers go through the overnight into the early morning. it's a beautiful afternoon but there is another storm that's going to take the track over the next few days. tomorrow the warm front gets a little closer so we'll see clouds from it. tomorrow night into wednesday, the storms get very strung out. once it gets out of here, it will usher in cooler air as we get into the second half of the week. our average is 60 degrees. so here's how the forecast sets up wednesday into friday. we know friday is a very important day around here with the home opener out at camden yards and at this point it looks like the way the overall storm track sets up is going to force all the wet weather to our south. it's not that far away, so this is something we'll track

closely and keep you updated on. small craft advisories are in effect until 8:00. sunset at this point now, 7:31 p.m. forecast for tonight, still breezy out there but that will die down and so will the temperatures. we'll go for a low of 34 degrees. obviously some of the outlying areas even colder than that. that's why there's a frost advisory and freeze warning in effect. then tomorrow, sunshine starts to mix with clouds. a warmer afternoon as we get into the mid-60s. that front comes tomorrow night into wednesday. just a chance for a couple of showers but for friday at this point it looks like the way the storm track sets up, it pushes all the stormy weather down to the south. but of course, we know it's a big forecast, so we'll keep a close eye on it and keep you updated. >> if you have tender plants out there, you may want to bring them in. >> yes. still to come on eyewitness news. >> controversy over the cash, a single mom from here in south baltimore told the "new york post" she won the mega millions but is it true and why are her
