odd turn when a woman who lives in the house here behind me told the new york post that the money was all hers, but lottery officials are telling us no one has come forward to claim the winning ticket, and her co-workers say she was part of a pool and she needs to share it with them. the world's biggest jackpot caused big drama in south baltimore after a haitian immigrant and single mother of seven told the new york post she held the winning megamillions ticket bought at a 7/11. but is it true? the lottery won't confirm. >> is it fake? is it an april fool's joke? >> reporter: and those going into her house on annapolis road weren't saying much as media from around the country staked it out. she was holed up in disguise at a neighbor's place. >> i'm looking at the door. she knows it. she won it, she knows it. she's not going to come to her door. >> we saw someone peaking out

korean man in his 40s. they stopped someone they believe is connect today the shooting. >> we believe we detained a possible suspect. >> reporter: oakland police are saying there's no longer an imminent threat to public safety. a deadly crash in carol county claims the life of a 16-year-old girl. it happened after 1:00 a.m. this morning on pool road. the driver lost control of her car during heavy rain, went off the road, and crashed into a tree. the victim's name has not been released, but the investigation is on going. an intense search continues in baltimore county. police are looking for the driver who struck and killed a university student. we're live at the campus and we have more on the search and reaction from students. >> reporter: news of the accident really spread quickly here on this campus which is planning to honor the young

victim at a candle light vigil tomorrow night. police are trying to find the hit and run driver they say caused his death. >> it's tragic. i mean, the entire campus is talking about it. >> reporter: as students walk from class to class, many have 20-year-old ryan bailey in their hearts. just before 2:00 a.m., a hit and run driver struck and killed bailey as he crossed york road. the only vehicle description from witnesses was an older model silver or white box style car. police need help finding the person responsible. >> we want to hear from anyone who may have witnessed this accident. we're interested in anyone who heard anything about anyone who was driving this vehicle or know where the vehicle is. >> reporter: bailey's hit and run death hits hard on a campus where many students have to cross busy roads several times a day. >> the fact that people are not considerate of pedestrians and people on bikes, it's

heartbreaking. >> maybe the driver was drunk. it's really sad. this is college and you need safety. >> reporter: crash investigators still reconstructing what happened and processing evidence collected from the scene. police unsure if bailey had been drinking. >> safety is first. i think it was 1 or 2:00 a.m. in the morning. there's not a lot of cars on the road. how did he get hit that late at night, i don't know. >> reporter: bailey is not the only university student to die this weekend. 27-year-old national guardsman timothy coyer was found dead in his off-campus apartment on saturday by some friends. police say his death does not appear suspicious. an autopsy is under way. we're live for wjz eyewitness news. >> there will be a vigil in honor of both the students who

state employee. the governor is hoping a little friendly competition will encourage everyone to recycle. shawn is one of thousands of state employees participating in the governor's new initiative to recycle. >> we think about as far as this kind of giving back and be able to reuse a lot of items. >> reporter: it's meant to challenge workers to out do each other. >> we're distributing these card board boxes so people can keep them right on their desks if they want. >> reporter: this competition to see who can recycle the most. and no one is exempt. >> i'll be in the competition too. my team will include workers in the state house, shaw house, and the jeffrey building. >> reporter: state agencies are required to recycle 20% of their waste, this challenge is to get it up to at least 30. this was announced hoping to encourage school children as well. >> you don't have to be an adult

to make a big difference. a kid can make a difference too. >> reporter: as with any contest, it may get a little dirty. >> i know we're going to do a little trash talking through the months. >> reporter: the competition continues through june 1st. the winning team will be decided on the highest recycle ratio to waste. the winners will get a plaque and of course bragging rights. >> a plaque made of recycled material, we hope. the challenge is just in central maryland right now. pilots are being honored in baltimore county. the only two remaining tuskegee airmen who live in the area. they were an elite group of african american pilots in the '40s. the two men were presented with executive citations today. >> i've met a number of them.

oh, look at it, a beautiful evening, clear skies, temperatures just perfect. >> i agree. this is a pretty spectacular day. over all, we were right on par with average. we spent so much of last month above average. it turned out to be the third warmest march on record. d.c. was the warmest ever. even though today is cooler than a lot of march was, still at 60 degrees. that is our average for the day. started out at 44. tonight, we're going to start dropping. still 60 in baltimore. a lot of 60s out there. with that northwesterly wind, it's bringing in cooler air. a frost advisory is in effect for a lot of the area. from here, northwest, we do have a freeze warning. it's going to be a cold one.

we're looking at about 34 degrees, north and west into the 20s. tomorrow afternoon, we'll tap into some of the warmer air. most of last month, we kept bringing that air our direction. however, this time this is where the storm track is and it's going to keep the warmest of the air away from us. with another front coming our direction, we'll get some of it in our area. one leaves us, here's the next one approaching. there's not a whole lot to it. during the day, clouds start to come in, and then a chance for a few showers into tomorrow night and wednesday. as the front passes over, not only does it draw up warmer air, but it really weakens. it gets so strung out over the state. then after it leaves us, this is how it leaves the weather pattern. a little bit different than we've had recently. sort of forces all of the next round of storms down to our south. with that weather track pattern in place, this is a close call,

people are talking about. newly released 911 calls. reporting from florida where thousands of protesters are still calling for the arrest of martin's shooter. >> each and every one of you, it means so much to us to see you all here. >> reporter: five weeks after trayvon martin was killed, his mother thanked a crowd in miami for demanding justice for her son's death. strangers turned out by the thousands to show their support. >> i had to make an effort and come out with my friends. this totally upsets me. >> reporter: the case has sparked questions nationwide about whether race played a role in the killing. george insists he shot martin in self-defense after the teen attacked him inside this gated community in sanford, florida. martin's relatives, including his brother, do not accept that story. >> it's baffling how people, they just take his word for it

as if that's exactly what happened and no question about it. >> reporter: a newly released recording is offering more details into the shooting. >> there's a person in route. >> someone's laying in the grass. >> reporter: it shows a second ambulance sent to the scene was called off bringing the severity of his injuries into question. over the weekend, activists marched on the police department demanding zimmerman be jailed. protesters echoed those calls in miami. more proof that passion stirred up by this case show no signs of fading. >> martin's parents are asking the u.s. justice department to examine whether prosecutors in florida interfered with the initial investigation. and a short time ago, demonstrators gather for a vigil

in downtown baltimore. the young adult clergy organized the event. they want to remind people of the tragedy and other lives lost to violence. federal proctors want the pilot to be held without bond. we're live in the news room with more on this case. >> reporter: he left the cockpit of the las vegas-bound flight screaming about religion and terrorists. this is video of him walking into the courtroom. passengers helped subdue him on tuesday. he's been at a hospital undergoing a medical evaluation. he was not asked to enter a plea during today's brief hearing. a ruling on his bond issue is expected on thursday. >> he could face up to 20 years in prison if he's convicted. are you thinking of taking a flight sometime soon? researchers say air-tran did the best job last year in getting passengers to their destinations with the least hassle.

based on four areas -- lost bags, delayed flights, bumping from full flights, and consumer complaints. two british sailors are badly hurt during a race in the pacific. their vessel was battered by a large rogue wave. >> reporter: 68 feet of pure wind-blown beauty. but for this crew, that dream became a nightmare. two members of the crew, a 50-year-old doctor and a 29-year-old software engineer had to be rescued by the coast guard after being injured in a storm so violent it ripped the helm clean off the boat's deck. they were participating in the round the world yacht race, some 40,000 miles. the leg across the north pacific was the hardest and the crew was

apprehensive even before it began. >> i think anybody who's got a brain cell between their ears is going to say they're not slightly nervous about it. >> reporter: the fleet hit a storm, the likes of which many had never seen. >> you almost want to give up, but none of these guys gave up. >> reporter: it was the boat that took it the hardest. a monsterous foaming swell broke over the stern and ripped the wheel right off its mount leaving them temporarily adrift. the weather remained so bad rescuers could only air drop medical supplies to the injured sailors below. it wasn't until just before dusk that the most seriously injured were taken aboard to safety. as for the boat, after some repairs, it's going to continue the competition. she was built for racing, and it seems so was her crew.

>> one of the sailors has broken ribs, the other is suffering from a back injury. one month since tornadoes ripped through southern indiana and the day henryville high school students are going back to class. their school was destroyed by a tornado. now they have a temporary school. high school seniors are missing out, but they're taking it in stride. >> it's not what we planned or what we wanted, but it could be worse. we're all lucky to graduate. we'll deal with it. it's all right. >> the school district is asking the state department of education to wave the 180 days of instruction requirement due to classes missed because of the tornado. the maryland jockey club cut its losses last year but did not

a horrible motor home accident leaves five people dead and 13 injured. police say the rv hit a guardrail and a bridge rail before crashing into a ravine off interstate 35. a 17-year-old was driving at the time and only two people were wearing seat belts. the family was returning after vacation in texas. a russian passenger plane crashes in a snowy field killing 31 of the 43 people on board. the plane was trying to make an emergency landing shortly after take off. witnesses say they noticed smoke coming from the engines. the plane was not properly deiced, but there's no indication that was the cause of the crash. trying to get a 2-year-old child out of a 36-foot well. their first attempts met with failure as the child kept slipping out of the rope.
