twisters hit texas. tremendous damage in dallas, and the threat of more storms hi everybody, kai is off, i'm mary bubala. first warning weather coverage begins. >> reporter: a funnel cloud loomed large over the area, just south of dallas/fort worth. the twisters scattered tractor trailer across a parking lot, and even lodged some of them in trees. >> a large, and potentially dangerous tornado has been confirmed. >> reporter: police say at least two touched down, causing damage. drivers navigated wet roads. ominous clouds hung over the

highways and visibility was severely reduced. >> i've got a tornado on the ground. >> reporter: the storm uprooted trees and tore off parts of roofs. the pipes inside this building snapped, and spewed water when part of the structure collapsed. neighbors stood outside in their cul de sac, surveying the damage. schools are holding students until the weather passes. police say there is considerable damage south of fort worth and dallas. wjz eyewitness news. >> first work weather coverage of the texas storms continues. tracking the dangerous system on live doppler radar for us. >> these are some really big tornadoes and some very, very dangerous ones. we're going to take you down to dallas and texas. take a look. there are numerous storms which have prompted tornado warnings and even severe thunderstorm warnings with hail up to baseball sized. we're going to take you on the

two specific ones which prompted all the damage you've seen so far. this one right here passed through dallas. right there is where there was a tornado. and this one, passed right near dfw airport. that also produced a tornado, when you see that black pop up, that is the really intense hail. look at the scale. that's about the highest you can go on this scale. this is a really bad situation going on right now. we'll keep you updated through the show. >> thank you. today's other big story, he admits he snapped. right now, police in california are interrogating a man accused of killing seven people and wounding three others at a small christian university in california. teresa garcia reports from oakland. >> reporter: police are using a robot to search a water way for the gun used in the deadly school massacre in northern california. >> we're going to continue to search until we find this firearm. >> reporter: police say 43-year- old one goh used the gun to

kill seven people yesterday. investigators say the south korean nursing man was a student at the school until he was expelled. he was upset students were teasing him about his english. >> he was expelled, we believe from the school. >> reporter: this small christian university was founded to help korean immigrants find careers in nursing and religion. police tell us goh came here looking for a school administrator. when he couldn't find her, he changed his plans. police say goh took a secretary hostage and forced her into a classroom, where he shot her. she later died. >> he heard a noise, an she was asking for help, again, and again. there was nothing we could do about that. >> reporter: six women and one man were killed, three others who were wounded are now out of the hospital. >> police hope to present the case to the district attorney within the next couple of days.

a memorial service is planned tonight for the victims. school scare. a bomb threat closes seven schools in kent county. an update on the emergency that sent thousands of students home today. >> reporter: a hand written note was found today at chestertown middle school. it said there were bombs in seven school and they were going to be detonated today. they began a reverse 911 call to notify parents that the schools were going to be closed. police dogs are conducting thorough searches of all seven schools. so far, k-9's have cleared three schools and are carefully going through the four remaining schools. staff are being permitted to return. >> thank you. anybody withinformation about the bomb threat is urged to call police. we'll have much more on the story all new at 5:00. breaking news right now from rosedale, baltimore

county. a man is critically injured while working on a truck. the accident happened in a garage on lake drive. the mechanic was repairing a tractor trailer on a lift. somehow that truck fell, trapping him under the rig's rear wheels oh he was rescued by -- he was rescued by county firefighters. at last check, his condition was critical. it is primary election day here in maryland. the votes could have a big impact on the gop presidential race. political reporter pat warren is out at the polls, and says voting turnout started light. >> reporter: we're off to a slow start, but that's to be expected in a presidential primary, when the incumbent democrat is running unopposed. there are committed voters out there. >> it's important for me to come out and vote, because it's my democratic right. i will always be here whenever it's time to vote. >> reporter: with early voting,

several neighborhoods have extensive damage. one funnel cloud plowed through a tractor trailer park, tossing the rigs around like toy trucks. the band of severe weather now moves through the area,wjz will continue to update you on the tornadoes and the damage throughout the night. in downtown philadelphia, making texting while walking safer. a texting lane is across the street from city hall. it is officially an april fools joke meant to send a message. the lines and painted warning signs are an ironic way of pointing out the dangers of texting while walking. city officials say the lines will be there about another week. celebrations get out of hand in kentucky after the wildcats win the ncaa title. chris sutter reports. >> reporter: uk fans were starting to make their trip home after celebrating with

a northwesterly wind. there is a front coming our way, and going to draw that warmer air up with it. we're starting to see some clouds come in from the west. those clouds are all associated with this front right in here. not a whole lot to it. but that front is going to move our way with more clouds tonight, maybe a couple of showers tonight into tomorrow, before it gets out of here. notice when it does on thursday, it pushes up just enough to the south that it clears us. there's another storm or two going to follow that same general track, but off to the south of us. that lines up very nicely for friday and saturday. keeping us dry for everyone heading out today. or starting out with easter weekend plans. we've got a northwest wind picking up once again tomorrow with that front coming through. small craft advisories will go back into effect tomorrow afternoon. forecasts like this for tonight. we're going down to about 46 degrees. the clouds will come in, a chance for a couple of showers late tonight into tomorrow. as we top out near 70 degrees. we're drawing up some of the

♪[ music ] we want to update the breaks news. several large tornadoes hit the dallas, texas area. this is video just in of one of the funnel clouds. those storms are leaving destruction in their path. collapsing roofs and ripping down power lines. we have live pictures of the damage around the dallas area. there are no immediate reports of damages. but there are no flights coming in or out of dfw airport. firefighters are trying to figure out what sparked a fire in a russian skyscraper. flames spread lieu the upper floors of moscow's federation tower, which is still under

construction. when complete, it will be the tallest building in europe. no one is hurt, but the extent of the damage is still unclear. this was video shot in a public park just before officers showed up. investigators say the fighters appear to be juveniles, but they believe at least one adult was there acting as referee. powerful evidence is presented in the trial of a philadelphia priest accused of covering up dozens of sexual abuse claims. they say the letters from the 1990s show that william lynn didn't follow up on the claims. the first roman catholic church official in the united states accused of abuse complaints. several people recovering today after a small plane crashes through the roof of a supermarket. this was the scene in florida just moments after the plane

crashed. five people were injured, including three customers inside the store. in wisconsin, an elderly woman is forced to act fast to land an out of control airplane. police say the 80-year-old woman was flying with her pilot husband when he lost consciousness and died. she radioed for help and another pilot was able to talk her through the landing, just moments before the plane ran out of gas. the woman was hospitalized with minor injuries. two parents in utah are speaking out today for the first time since their young son drowned in a washing machine. the heartbroken couple says they still can't believe what happened. >> i was just at home, doing my laundry like i always do. >> reporter: just a normal day in the home. that little boy, 21-month-old ollie went missing in the blink of an eye. >> i ran through my whole house and calling his name, i

couldn't find him anywhere. then i put my hands in the washer, and felt his little body. the worst day of my life. >> reporter: tiffany and a neighbor frantically began cpr. ambulances arrived, and rushed ollie to the hospital, but it was too late. >> obviously really hard to put your little boy's body on the table, wishing that he was going to come home with you. >> reporter: the basic appliance they use daily never crossed their minds as a danger to their son. >> i didn't think the child could fit in, and the washer came up to his chest. >> reporter: they now have a warning to parents. >> everyone talks about a tub. i knew never to leave him alone in a tub. >> which we never did, ever. >> i just want to make mothers and fathers aware that it's a

couple of showers coming in. tonight, we're going to see more clouds come in, and a chance for a shower later tonight into the day tomorrow. this front right in here moves in our direction. down to the south, that's where we're seeing the really intense tornadoes. these are widespread, damaging large track tornadoes also, unfortunately. that is going to stay off to the south. there is another threat for severe weather to the east of that tomorrow. for us, we're just going to see the chance for a few of those showers around, as the front comes through. as it gets out of here, it sets up our weather pattern for the next few afternoons. notice this front to the south that it keeps showers south of that, and that's the track we're going to be thursday, friday, even in saturday. we've got another storm or two following that track. we're going to see the rains stay away for opening day at camden yards. forecast at home looks like this. on the water, small craft advisories go back into effect

all over. >> and destruction all over texas as dangerous storms touch down. we begin with an update on the breaking news in texas. several tornadoes hit near dallas, causing significant damage, you're looking live now at the destruction, wjz has extensive first warning coverage. we begin with more on the look at the potentially deadly storms. >> reporter: a funnel cloud hanging large over the area just south of dallas ft. worth. police say at least two touched down causing damage. >> this whole storm is just rotating very violently. >> reporter: it scattered tractor-trailers across the parking lot and even lodged some of them in trees. >> large, extremely dangerous, and a potentially deadly tornado has been confirmed. >> reporter: drivers work on the roads as people warn of oncoming danger. the clouds were over the highways, and visibility was severely reduced. >> i have a tornado on the ground.
