trees and roofs. the pipes inside this building snapped and threw out water when part of the structure collapsed. neighbors stood outside their homes looking at the damage. schools are holding students until the weather passes. police say there is considerable damage south of ft. worth and dallas. wjz, eyewitness news. and fort worth airport grounding planes right now to inspect them for more damage. and first right now, more weather weather. >> reporter: we'll take you back here and show you a first round with two tornadoes in these cells, looking closer in just a moment, since then we have had more tornado warnings from this line as it comes up from the south. notice when the black starts to pop up. that is an indication of large

hail. and we have had baseball sized hail reported with the storms, just imagine how big that would be. we'll take you closer and show you one more time. this right here was a tornado. this -- on this side it -- this one right in here, this coming up from the south also possibly producing a tornado, over the last half hour, this is still a very dangerous situation and will continue, even though it shifts a little bit further to the east. we'll keep you updated. okay, thank you. a handwritten note threatening others. now bomb sniffing dogs are looking at every school in kent county. more on the latest, from concerned parents and students. >> reporter: well vic, that note that has rocked the entire county was found right outside this school taped on a door. police say it was simple, written on the notebook paper here, the words were explosive, saying every school in the system would be blown up.

police say it is one of the biggest threats to target the maryland schools. a single handwritten notes have parents across kent county in a panic. >> earlier this morning, two teachers at the middle school found a note on the side of the school. the note said there was a bomb not only in that school but in the other kent county schools that would go off today. >> reporter: around 8:00 this morning, the 7 public schools and three private schools in the county were all evacuated as bomb detention teams looked at each one. >> i was standing out in the freezing cold, and we had to stay out there for a long time. >> as soon as we got off the bus we had to walk to the track and go all the way back. and then everybody was calling their parents. it was very difficult. >> reporter: the news spread fast through chester county, the usually quiet, sleepy town on the river. one woman was afraid for her several grandchildrens' lives. >> that is crazy, why threaten

the children? used to be you only had to worry about a lock, now you have to worry for your life when you go to school. you don't know what will happen next. >> reporter: it took dozens of officers from across the state to as far as prince george's county to help. they were cleared with no traces of a bomb. but still, parents say they can't shake the fears of the worst. >> it is like my kids in the schools, can i even send them to the schools? >> reporter: right now police are looking at surveillance video to try to find out who is responsible. now making a threat even if it is a fake one is a felony and could send somebody to prison for 10 years. and if this was a child playing a prank, he or she will face juvenile charges, reporting live, chestertown, wjz eyewitness news. and all activities in kent county are cancelled for the

night. and in baltimore county, a man is in critical condition. denise has more. >> reporter: well, mary, police say a tractor-trailer fell on top of a man this afternoon. they're on the scene at lake drive and rosedale. the man went into cardiac arrest and police took him to john hopkins bayview. police believe it was just an accident. all right, thank you, we're still looking to get an update on the man's condition and will have more at 6:00 for the latest. and in the closing hours of the primary election day, voters casting their ballots across the state. they're looking at the republican presidential candidate race. wjz is live with the political report. more from washington with the latest on the action at the polls, is there action at the polls? >> reporter: i wish i could say there was more action than there actually is. as you know, the republican presidential candidates did a lot to put maryland in the national political spotlight. but seems as though getting

voters out to the polls is a harder job than even they thought. republican presidential candidate hopefuls mitt romney and newt gingrich in salisbury, and ron paul, in college park, all up close and personal with people. >> maryland actually has more of a say this election than previously, that is a good thing. >> i voted today republican. >> reporter: but others in carroll county were surprised at how few people showed up with them to vote. >> it is pretty disappointing. >> i am a little surprised the traffic is not heavier. >> this place has about 200 people that voted so far. that is pretty low for the presidential election. >> and maybe that is a -- you know a sign that people are not very satisfied with -- the choices that they had today. >> reporter: for democrats, incumbent barack obama is running unopposed. but there are some contested congressional races. >> it is good to come and vote,

because it is my democratic right. and i always will be here, whenever it is time to vote. >> reporter: the pay off for republicans this year is the 37 maryland delegates who will help to determine the party's nominee. now election officials are telling wjz they expect a 25% turnout statewide. some jurisdictions were reporting as low as 6% late this afternoon. reporting live from mt. washington, i'm pat warren, now back to you. all right, stay with wjz for complete coverage of the primaries throughout the evening. and the mega millions mystery is deeper. the local winner of the largest jackpot ever has not stepped forward. and a woman claiming she is the one is not sounding so confident in a new interview. wjz is live outside her home in

south baltimore. mike hellgren has more. >> reporter: you know if it is true it is a great rags to riches story. but at this point nobody officially has come forward to claim the prize. >> i was so shocked, i said -- well, two times -- >> reporter: the mystery lady wilson was all smiles in the new york post saying she won the big mega millions prize, now she seems confused. did you say you won the big jackpot or a smaller one? >> i really don't know where it came from, i don't know what is going on -- >> reporter: during a new interview inside her home in south baltimore she wouldn't produce the winning ticket. >> until i'm sure it is right. >> reporter: so nobody has come here to lottery headquarters today, but we can confirm ms. wilson has hired a lawyer. the maryland lottery officials have gotten attention from around the world, saying they're no closer to identifying the winner. >> we have had no indication that the winning ticket is

coming in. we haven't heard from anybody. the winning ticket has not been presented. >> they shouldn't -- that is fine, but what about -- making sure it is the right thing -- i am not -- i am in shock. >> reporter: to make things more complicated, wilson's co- workers at mcdonalds are loving it. they say it was part of a pool and they want to share. wilson claims the winning ticket is separate, the cash, hers. >> we had problems. >> reporter: whether she is the big winner or somebody else steps up sure makes for an exciting cliff hanger. >> do you still have the ticket? >> reporter: and wilson is from haiti. she says she wants to take her money and go back there. reporting live, south baltimore, mike hellgren, wjz baltimore news. all right, we'll see what happens. two other winning tickets were sold, one in illinois and kansas and those winners have

not come forward either. well today maryland lawmakers are discussing the bill to bring more forms of gambling to local casinos. the house of delegates is considering legislation to allow table games like black jack in maryland. supporters believe it would make the local casinos more competitive with casinos in neighboring states who already have table games. the bill already cleared the senate. and the ravens are getting new uniforms, you will have to look closely to see the changes. nike showed the new version today for all the nfl's 32 teams. the new ravens' jersey will have purple trim on the front collar instead of black trim all the way around. the seahawks there -- it goes on sale at retailers april 26. i'm stalling to see if we'll see the ravens jersey, let's fix it for the next show. i saw green bay in there, we may just not have it yet, because -- >> understood. >> i called for the same thing

. the top commander inside the anne arundel police department calls for federal

officials to investigate an abuse of power scandal. more on the growing situation against the executive and police chief. >> reporter: well first came the rank and file officers, now one of the top leaders in the department is voicing his complaints over the scandal. just weeks after two anne arundel police unions issue a vote of no confidence and excited county executive john leopold and police chief james teare. they spoke publicly for the first time supporting the rank and file. >> i believe that is a cry for help. >> reporter: he wants that help to come from the u.s. department of justice, in a bombshell announcement to the county monday, the police chief called on justice officials to investigate allegations of misconduct and wrong doing within the department, the allegations that stem from the county's criminal indictment last month. leopold is accused of making police officers assigned to protect him use the state's data base to dig up dirt on his

enemies. and using those situations to drive up sexual encounters in public parking lots. >> this is the biggest black eye in the department for years. >> reporter: the union president atkinson applauds the department chief for speaking out after police chief teare refused to answer questions regarding the scandal. teare has ignored calls to resign and can only be fired by the county executive. >> the real bad guy in all of this is county executive john leopold. all this focus is on the chief of police, and as long as the focus remains on the chief, the county executive won't get rid of him. >> reporter: a spokesperson from the department of justice told me that they are currently reviewing the department chief's requests for an investigation. wjz eyewitness news. derek thank you, in two weeks the county council will vote on a resolution urging them to suspect leopold.

for a refreshing sweet tea at participating mcdonalds. i'm loving it. and baseball season just days away in baltimore, tonight the count down to the orioles' home opener is on. the birds will be at camden yards this friday. we looked at how the ground crews are getting the field ready for game time. it has to be just perfect, we know that. >> reporter: yes, absolutely mary, we know it. it looks absolutely incredible for anybody coming to the game or watching here on wjz 13. you're going to love it. it is so green, lush, all the beautiful weather that we have had having has actually had to change the way that they did things on the field. take a look. the grounds crews work around the clock, making sure the grass at camden yards is perfect. under the leadership of the heads ground keeper, nicole sherry, crews make sure that everything you see on the field

is flawless. >> so we put down the logo, make sure the grass is ready to go,ing the pattern is in. >> reporter: this year the eyes will be on the hard work as camden yards celebrate their 20th anniversary, the 30 acres of dark kentucky blue grass has never looked better. and the warm winds are also creating a challenge when it came to keeping that grass looking good. >> i was a little worried going there, that the grass was not really going to go still like it has in the past, but they took off. everything should be set. but i was a little nervous. >> reporter: while sherry makes sure the field is ready, crews work overtime to complete the work that will improve the fan experience. with a new roof top deck in center field and new statues for the team is hall of famers. and a new brew pub along the utah street, bearing the name of the mvp rick dempsey.

30 on this map as well. now this afternoon, look at what happened. from 32 degrees to 70 degrees, quite a swing, look at all the 70s out there. 72 in d.c., 74 in cumberland, and that is the high out there today. we were just at the average yesterday, warming up nicely this afternoon, after the cold morning the average was 39 degrees. now tonight, a breeze picking up out of the northwest, because of the front coming in. blue skies out there. in time, the clouds come in from the northwest, a couple of showers are out there. all a part of the next storm system moving our way. when we open it up you can see a bit better, it is really not a big storm, moving our way, tonight, tomorrow, couple of showers possible. and we'll see some sunshine out there. all of this will get out of here for thursday, now as far as the severe weather goes across the south that is going to move to the east tomorrow, but stays to the south because

of this. it keeps everything down there for us. now on thursday as the front pushes off to the south it also keeps the showers away. that is what we'll be in for the end of the week, two more storm systems are coming through, it is close, far enough south, we'll not have to deal with them. we'll continue to track it and keep you updated as we head through the week. northwest winds gust up to 20 knots from the day tomorrow. small craft advisory through the day tomorrow. 46 for the low, more clouds, a chance of showers, then tomorrow, a couple of showers possible with the front coming through. dropping warmer air, as we get back in the 70s tomorrow. above average, once again, but then the thing is after that, temperatures drop. still not all that bad. and we're still looking at a really nice forecast for friday. >> do you know what i keep doing every night? flowers i bought way too early -- in and out, in and out

now, it's complete coverage, it is wjz maryland's news station. it is 5:30, a beautiful 70 degrees and sunny. good evening everybody, and thank you for joining us on wjz eyewitness news. we continue to follow breaking news out of texas. severe weather moves through the dallas area, bringing several possible tornadoes. denise is in the news room with incredible video of what people are experiencing there, denise? >> well, mary, the dangerous tornadoes touched down near dallas and ft. worth. you're looking live now at some of the damage. the storm was so strong it lifted tractor-trailers off the ground, tossing them like toys. this video shows the southern portion of dallas a short time ago, the video you looked at live. that is video of when the actual tornado hit. other videos in the dallas area showing homes without roofs, while other buildings were flattened. the storm pushed cars into fences, scattered lawns into

streets. thethe dfw employees seeing severe weather near the city. and we have meteorologist bernadette woods with more. >> reporter: this is a really bad situation, not quite over yet. we'll take you to the radar, showing you the massive tornadoes coming through. and at this point there are still tornado warnings in effect. a huge squall line producing massive signs of hail. we're taking you back to early this afternoon when the actual tornadoes went through the damage you just saw, it was from these tornadoes. those moved off to the northeast, and another round of tornado warnings was prompted. closer to this one here, this one right here, and that black and even white that pop ups indicate the hail. you can see on a scale -- the highest level you can get. now there are still a lot of warnings in the dallas area,

but the line is moving off to the east, the severe weather threat continues. it will be further to the east, something we'll track and keep you updated on. and the tornadoes in texas could mark the start of a violent spring. you can't fight them, but a new way to track them is coming they say. >> reporter: tornadoes look scary enough from a distance. but as they close in, so does the window of opportunity to survive. anything strong enough to toss a school bus is more than enough to kill. >> they're moving targets, they're quickly developing targets. >> reporter: dr. sullivan is the chief scientist for noah, which is building new satellites to track tornadoes as they develop. >> the important thing is to stop the clouds that are developing in the way that could become super cell, and focusing more tightly to monitor them. >> reporter: it is above the western area, the satellite can zoom on to the top of the super

cells, providing a fresh image every five seconds. >> the best minds in the world can't tell you which thunderstorms will create tornadoes. >> reporter: he has tracked the scientific instruments. >> this gives guys in the field to understand the tornadoes, a heads-up, and when and where they will start. since there is no stopping tornadoes, spotting them is not only the best against defense, it is the only defense. >> really see that type of action that saves your life. >> reporter: wjz, eyewitness news. and the new tornado tracking satellite will be launched in 2015. >> and more breaking news right now, sky chopper 13 over the scene. more with captain mike. >> reporter: well, this is sort of standard procedure in the spring over here on the eastern shore. we're on kent island in kept county. we can see a very large dark column here all the way from the anne arundel county area,

by anne arundel county. we came down to the scene and found -- a fairly large grass fire burning some new and old growth, right here the -- water way that goes up into the area. now there are no fire officials on the scene, it looks like the property owner is in the area. we're not aware that it is causing any problems to any nearby buildings at this point because it is burning towards the water. these things are fairly regular on the eastern shore. but at this point it is not clear whether it is a controlled burn or an incidental fire. we'll monitor the station and keep you posted. >> all right captain mike thank you. and new details coming out today about a deadly shooting at a christian university in california. police say the accused gunman is a former nursing student angry at being taken out of the school. more from oakland. >> reporter: police use a robot

with sonar to find the gun used in a deadly massacre. >> we'll continue to search. >> reporter: police say 43-year- old one l. goh used the gun to kill the students in oakland. investigators say the man from south korea was a nursing student until he was taken out of the school. they teased him because of his language. >> he was having anger management issues. >> reporter: this was founded to help the korea immigrants to find nursing schools and religion. one l. goh was looking for an administrator, when he kind find her, he changed his plan. police say one l. goh took a secretary hostage forcing her into a class where he shot her. she later died. >> i heard noise, she was asking for help's -- again and again, nothing we could do. >> reporter: six women, one man

were killed. daniel sim lost his sister who was studying to be a nurse. >> she was just such a loving person. she didn't deserve to go this way. >> reporter: three other students who were wounded are now out of the hospital. in oakland, wjz eyewitness news. and police hope to present the case against the suspect to the district attorney within the next couple of days. the district attorney will decide what charges to press. and police in northeast ohio trying to track down those involved in a real life feet club. more from the news room. the investigators say the weekend fight drew an audience of about 100 people. take a look at this youtube video, it was shot in a public park just before police showed up. it shows several people fighting while an armed man appears to referee, threatening to shoot anybody who interferes. police say it appears the fights are held monthly. a loaded gun was found in the nearby stream. no serious injuries have been reported from the fight. back to you. >> derek thank you, park employees are asked to check

more remote areas of the park more frequently. police are also patrolling more. and voters heading to the polls in washington, d.c. in the latest round of polls. mitt romney is expected to do well, but rick santorum is still arguing about a conservative for the nominee. more from washington. >> reporter: mitt romney is shaking hands and handing out sandwiches in wisconsin. the g.o.p. frontrunner is encouraging voters to head to the polls and help him deliver the knockout punch to his chief rival, rick santorum. >> if we have a good turnout then i will become the person who receives the wisconsin delegates that i need to go on to become the nominee and finally take back the white house. >> reporter: voters in washington, d.c. and maryland are also casting ballots. 95 delegates are at stake today. mitt romney led the polls heading into this round. he has been ignoring the g.o.p. opponents on the campaign trail in wisconsin, and focusing on

the fall matchup with president obama. >> this president doesn't want to take responsibility for his mistakes. >> reporter: just one victory tonight will put mitt romney past the half way point in delegates needed to clinch the nomination. with each contest he gains on santorum who failed to get his name on the ballot here in washington, d.c. but the former senator campaigned hard in wisconsin to get a share of the state's 42 delegates. >> we feel very confident that we can get a good vote out of wisconsin, a loud, confident vote from conservatives. >> reporter: santorum is heading to his home state of pennsylvania to watch tonight's results. that state's primary is three weeks from now and will be a must-win from now, mitt romney is watching the returns at an election night party in milwaukee. in washington, wjz eyewitness news. mitt romney has raised more money than his g.o.p. competitors burkburnett

hacking scandal that has shaken a family empire. >> reporter: media executive james murdoch says it is the right time for him to step down from the british company. the 39-year-old son of the giant, rupert, says he fears he will become a lightning rod for the broadcaster as the investigation continues into britain's phone hacking scandal. police have arrested dozens of journalists from murdocks' news publication, since the allegations became public last july. they shut down after the alleged reports of the journalists tapping into the phones of celebrities and high profile people for stories. in a matter of weeks, he will likely be back in the public spotlight. a government panel investigating media ethics will ask murdoch and his father to answer questions about hacking.
