texas tornadoes. a string of powerful twisters pummel north texas. >> i heard this crack. it was like a freight train or something coming through the house. all at once it was gone. mitt romney sweeps trio of primaries. widening his lead in the race for the republican presidential nomination. >> we won them all! and campus tragedy. the alleged gunman who killed seven people at an oakland college tells police he was angry that he was expelled. this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, april 4, 2012. good morning, everybody, thanks for joining us. i'm betty nguyen. recovery efforts are under way in north texas this morning

after up to a dozen tornadoes ransacked the dallas area. more than a dozen people were injured, but so far there are no reports that anyone was killed. this remarkable video is not a scene from "the wizard of oz." one twister actually picked up tractor-trailer and threw them around like matchsticks. dozens of homes were damaged. this video was taken by mike napoli of the texas rangers from the dugout at the ballpark in arlington as the storm hit. the storm disrupted travel and left thousands without power. karen brown is in hard-hit forney, texas, east of dallas. good morning. what's it like there? >> reporter: good morning to you, betty. many of the homes here in the subdivision are as damaged as the one you see here behind me, but no major injuries were reported. and entire families say they survived in their bathtubs. you know, betty, this area of texas is often referred to as god's country.

and at the very least, many believe there were some miracles. sandy cooper is trying to salvage memories. >> i'm gathering pictures that i have found. >> reporter: photos are scattered throughout the debris in arlington, texas. >> i'm gathering memories of the people that may not be able to find them. >> oh, wow! >> reporter: the national weather service estimates as many as a dozen tornadoes tore through the dallas area tuesday. >> holy moly! >> reporter: the powerful storm tossed big rigs around like toys, flattened trucks and destroyed homes and businesses. >> the roar of tornado, i'll never forget that. >> reporter: 85-year-old robert simmons' grandson had to be wheeled out of their home on a stretcher. he was injured protecting him. >> he helped me get in the bathtub and put pillows on me. by the time he got pillows over me, i heard this crack like a freight train. >> reporter: here in foreign y house after house was damaged. the roof of the elementary school was torn off with the children inside. one mom had just gone in to pick

up her child when her car was tossed hundreds of feet. no one was injured. >> i'm just glad to be here. >> reporter: cheri's home was destroyed. she was babysitting three infants when the tornado sirens sounded in forney. >> i went and jumped in the bathtub, put a comforter over us and that was it. >> reporter: dawn henderson survived in the bathroom of her business. >> if this concrete wall had gone the other direction, it would have crushed us. >> reporter: loss of property everywhere, but so far no reports of loss of life. several hundred people remain in shelters this morning. many will be back out here at daylight, trying to salvage what they can. the national weather service will also be back out, trying to survey the damage, trying to figure out exactly how many tornadoes touched down. betty? >> seems like a lot of damage. karen in forney, texas, thank you. three is the magic number for mitt romney.

the former massachusetts governor made it a clean sweep winning all three of yesterday's primaries. romney scored a decisive victory in march march where he received nearly half of the vote. he also did well in washington, d.c., where his rival rick santorum was not on the ballot. but his biggest win was in wisconsin, where 42 delegates were at stake. after tuesday's hat trick, cbs news estimates romney now has 630 delegates, more than half of what he needs to capture the gop nomination. we're live in washington with much more on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, betty. last night's victory cemented mitt romney's status as the gop front-runner. his opponents are vowing to fight out but his campaign appears to now be focusing on the general election in november. mitt romney was all smiles after notching wins in all three of tuesday's primaries. >> we won them all. >> reporter: his victories in wisconsin, maryland and washington, d.c. give him more

than twice the number of delegates than rick santorum. more importantly, he now holds more than half the 1,144 needed to secure the gop nomination. instead of slamming his republican opponents, romney turned his attention on president obama. >> when you drive home tonight and you stop by the gas station, just take a look at the prices and then ask yourself, four more years of that? >> reporter: romney also painted the president as being out of touch after spending the last three years in the white house. >> president obama thinks he's doing a good job. i'm not kidding. he actually thinks he's doing a great job. he thinks he's doing an historically great job like abraham lincoln and lbj and fdr. no, he did not say that on "saturday night live," all right? >> reporter: rick santorum campaigned hard in wisconsin but spent primary night in his home state of pennsylvania. he told supporters, he's staying in the race. >> pennsylvania and half the other people in this country have yet to be heard.

and we're going to go out and campaign here and across this nation to make sure that their voices are heard in the next few months. >> reporter: santorum has predicted victory in the keystone state. pennsylvania holds its primary april 24th along with new york, connecticut, rhode island and delaware. newt gingrich didn't hold any campaign events on tuesday. ron paul held a town hall in california. both candidates say they, too, are staying in the race. betty? >> all right, thank you. well, exit polls show 80% of the voters in wisconsin think mitt romney will be the gop nominee in november. 55% of those who voted for romney now say they strongly favor him. and about three-quarters of the maryland voters who cast a ballot for rick santorum say they'll vote for whoever the gop nominee is. a federal judge is not happy with president obama's comments on the supreme court and health care reform.

the president had said it would be inappropriate for unelected judges to overturn the law. yesterday the fifth circuit court of appeals judge in houston was hearing a case, challenging parts of the affordable health care act. judge jerry smith ordered a justice department attorney to produce a letter from the attorney general outlining the justice department's position. >> i want to be sure that you're telling us that the attorney general and the department of justice do recognize the authority of the federal courts to have unelected judges to strike acts of congress or portion thereof in appropriate cases. >> on monday president obama said he didn't believe the supreme court would take the unprecedented step of overturning a law passed by congress. the suspect in the deadly shooting at an oakland college is due in court today. police say the motive was revenge and that one goh told investigators he planned to attack for weeks.

the victims were chosen at random. theresa garcia reports. >> my help come from the lord -- >> reporter: oakland's korean community gathered to remember the seven victims killed in the oikos shooting. police radio shows the chaos after the shooting. >> people are running out screaming. >> reporter: police say 43-year-old one goh, former student at private christian school, returned with a handgun and shot seven people to death before fleeing the campus. >> the shooter is going to be a male korean, about 40 years old, 5'5", heavy built, wearing a blue jacket and baseball cap. >> reporter: police say goh had been expelled from the school two months ago for behavioral problems. the korean national was reportedly upset students teased him about his poor english. goh was arrested in a shopping center a few miles away but was not carrying a gun. police divers and a

monica college in california were pepper sprayed by campus police when they tried to disrupt a trustee's meeting. two were taken to the hospital but their injuries are not thought to be serious. the students say officers used the pepper spray without warning. a school official says police judged the crowd was becoming a threat to public safety. the students were protesting new tuition hikes. on the "cbs moneywatch," the stock act becomes law. and a new windows smartphone debuts. ashley morrison is here in new york with that and more. good morning. >> good morning. stocks overseas fell into red territory this morning. tokyo's nikkei lost more than 2% to finish at its lowest level in five months. hong kong's hang seng was closed for a holiday. a three-day winning streak was snapped after a fefb official said they were concerned owe a slowdown in hiring. the dow slid 64 points while the nasdaq lost 6. at the white house today, president obama will sign is the stock act into law.

dallas, mostly sunny, 82. l.a., partly sunny, 67 degrees. now for a check of today's national forecast. a severe weather system will move slowly out of east texas and oklahoma into the deep south. bringing large hail, damaging winds and possible tornadoes. a few storms are likely in virginia. rain will move out of the southern rockies into the western plains. the northwest will again have showers and mountain snow, but it's going to be windy in the southwest, especially nevada and utah. let's get you some sports now. the women of baylor university are the ncaa champions and they are something else. unbeaten. the lady bears are the first major college basketball team to go 40-0 in a season, playing the determined but outgunned irish of notre dame. baylor took the lead early and never let it go. 6'8" center brittney griner was typically dominant, scoring 26 points with 13 rebounds and 5 blocked shots as baylor won
