path of destruction. >> look at that! oh, my god! >> the frantic search for victims while texas residents survey the catastrophic damage. hi, everybody, i'm mary bubula. winds from the tornado topped 135 miles per hour and today in north texas, the property damage is massive and the cleanup is under way. susan mcginnis reports for wjz. people there are thankful there was no loss of life. >> reporter: volunteers are clearing the rubble from what used to be chris wilson's home. just about everything is gone, but he's thankful his wife narrowly escaped.

>> she left minutes before the tornadoes came. >> reporter: wilson was at work when the tornado hit. he's hoping he can find pictures or mementos in the debris. >> all this stuff you see here can be replaced. >> reporter: wilson is one of hundreds of residents of the dallas fort worth area who lost their homes. despite the heavy damage, few people were injured and no one died rnlg the fact that everybody ta woke up in forney yesterday morning is still alive today in forney, that's a real blessing. zero fatalities. >> reporter: the national weather service estimates as many as a dozen twisters touched down in north texas. damage is also extensive in lancaster. the twister's path of destruction can be seen from the air. rachelle williams' home is still handing while her neighbor's house is gone. >> we were blessed, yeah. we were spared. god is good. >> reporter: at the dallas-fort worth airport, hundreds of

flights are canceled for the second day in a row. many passengers were stranded over night. >> there's probably hundreds and hundreds of people just laying on the floor, on cotts. >> reporter: but many say that's a minor inconvenience sxard to all those -- compared to all those that are now homeless. in forney, texas, susan mcginnis, wjz eyewitness news. >> the warning at the dallas- fort worth airport enabled many to get to safety. a 19-room mansion is on fire. you can see some flames shooting out really all over this home, including the roof. fire units we're told from around the area northwest of philadelphia are responding. no one was inside the 19th century home when the fire broke out. the three-story mansion is valued at $5 million. decades in prison, a short

time ago a federal judge sentences five new orleans police officers for shooting unarmed residents after hurricane katrina. vic is in the newsroom with more on how can the officers will spend behind bars. >> reporter: the officers have been sentenced to prison terms ranging from 6 to 65 years. they were convicted of killing citizens on the bridge. all together, 0 current or former cops have been charged because of their actions in the days after the disaster. mary, back to you. >> vic, thank you. a new zero tolerance policy has result ned the firings of 35 new orleans officers and the suspension of two 200 others. campus threat university of maryland college park police file new charges against a student, 19 year alexander song walked out of a psychiatric hospital and police were waiting for him.

the issue coming up at five and six. the woman from south baltimore who claims she won the mega millions lottery jackpot now says she doesn't want the attention. her lawyer said he doesn't even know if she has the winning ticket. mike has the reports on the mega mess. >> reporter: at a press conference here in charles village, marilyn wilson's lawyer says she just wants everyone to leave her alone. wilson came in and said nothing and her lawyer didn't say much, either, at least about the winning ticket. >> did you win the maryland lottery, would you permit her to answer that question? >> no, i cannot say with any certainty that this ticket existing. >> reporter: but the "new york post" says wilson told them she won. here's what she told wjz. >> i'm shocked myself. i'm still shocked right now. >> you're in shock because you believe you won or because [ indiscernible question ] you

a crane collapses at a new york city construction site leaving two people injured, one of them critically. it happened late last night. fire officials say two pieces of the crane broke loose and fell. one piece was # 0 feet long -- 80 feet long, the other 40 feet. the construction site and several streets around the accident remain closed as emergency officials investigate. a sailboat anchored off the coast of malibu goes up in flames. the blaze engulfs the 65-foot vessel. fire officials are able to rescue the owner who was on boards when the fire broke out it. appears the sailboat was destroyed by the fire. the cause is still under investigation. well, every so often you hear about regular people doing amazing things under the most intense pressure. bob orr reports for wjz on the story of one wisconsin woman who saved herself when her

husband collapsed mid air. >> reporter: helen and john collins were married for 58 years. when visiting family, they often didn't drive, they flew, in a twin engine cessna like this one. john was an experienced pilot averaging 250 flight hours each summer. but late monday afternoon while flying to see one of their sons, something went terribly wrong. helen realized johnson lost consciousness. with very little experience, the 80 year woman took over the controls. captain chesley sullenberger knew what was going through. >> she was able to master her fare. >> reporter: helen collins called 911. >> they say a lady up in her airplane, her husband was a pilot and she thinks he's have a heart attack, he's not able to fly the plane. >> reporter: helen was circling

at 2400 feet over northeastern wisconsin when this pilot flew to her rescue. >> as i was coaching her through the configuration change, i was doing the same in my aircraft. >> by flying in formation and keem kooepg his arrow okeeping his plane near hers, he was able to judge her altitude by looking at her instruments without her having to he tell him what hers was. >> after a bumpy attitudedown, helen's -- touchdown june, helen's plane landed safely. her husband was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. helen survived with only minor injuries. well, now let's take a look at what's happening on wall street. [ bell ringing]] >> more concerns that europe dragged the markets down. the market is down 125 points,

s&p down 45, the nasdaq down 14. >> reporter: stocks sold off despite upbeat news about the job market. the payroll processor adp says bistes added -- businesses added 290,000 jobs last month. the report gives some insight into the unemployment numbers which come out on friday. economists predict the jobless rate will drop to 8.2%. yahoo was playing off 2,000 employees or 14% of its work force. it's new ceo say the cuts will save the struggling internet company about $375,000 a year. the president signed the stock today. the bill passed with by part son report after a 60 minutes report exposed the problem. burger king is going public

thanks for staying with eyewitness news. the original target aschool official at oikos university said she was the intended arrest tarr get of a former student who shot and killed seven people. teresa garcia reports for wjz. the school is joined in grief >> my help cometh from the lord. >> reporter: oakland's korean community garthered to remember the seven victims killed in the university's university. >> rising shots coming from inside the building. people are running out screaming. >> reporter: police say23-year- old one goh had returned with a handgun and shot seven people to death. >> the shooter is going to be a male korean, about 40 years old, heavy build. he's wearing a blue jacket and a baseball cap. >> reporter: police say goh had been expelled from the school two months ago for behavioral problems.

the korean national was reportedly upset students teased him about his poor english. goh was arrested in a shopping center a few miles away but was not carrying a gun. police divers and a sonar equipped robot searched a water way looking for a gun. the small christian university was founded to help korean immigrants find careers in nursing and religion. police tell us goh came here looking for a school administrator and when he couldn't find her, he changed plans. goh took a secretary hostage, took her into a classroom and shot her. six women and one man were killed. three other students who were wounded are out of the hospital. . >> goh is expected to make his first court appearance this afternoon. the nursing program director believe goh became upset when he was refused a tuition refund

when he was expelled from the program. vic for the second time nadal hasan's attorneys are asking for the court to reset the date. the charges stem from a november 2009 shooting at fort hood. the military trial is scheduled for june 12th and has already been delayed one time. the judge will rule on that matter next week. he did grant hasan's attorney's request for a forensic pathologist to review autopsy reports. the judge denied the prosecution's request to admit evidence before the trial, including 911 calls made from the texas army post in 2009. vic. >> mary, thank you. hasan, who studied to be a psychiatrist here in maryland faces the death penalty if convicted. 44 years ago dr. reverend

martin luther king was assassinated. the civil rights leader was gunned down on the hotel balcony in 1968. a suicide bomber strikes a market in afghanistan reportedly killing two u.s. troops. >> reporter: a senior u.s. official says two american soldiers are among the victims of the suicide bombing in northern afghanistan. police say the bomber rode a motor bike included a crowded vegetable market killing at least 10 people. u.s. troops were reportedly having tea with the local police commander minutes before the attack. the assault on foreign troops are on the rise. nato says it's unclear who is behind them, but anger has been building after a u.s. soldier allegedly killed 17 civilians and other u.s. troops mistakenly burned korans.

>> one of the things we are finding in many cases there were signs and symptoms that could have been seen. >> reporter: two days ago a twin blast shook a market in afghanistan. u.s. forces are training afghanistan police hoping they'll be ready to take over security in 2014. . >> so far this year, 97 nato service members have been killed in afghanistan, including 54 americans. the suspected east coast rapist could stand trial this summer staple steming from -- stemming an alleged attack on teenage trick or treaters in 2009. police believe thomas is responsible for rapes and attacks on 17 women from virginia to connecticut. a trial is scheduled for july 31st. a key witness in the retrial of twin brothers accused of setting a pit bull on fire is heading to jail.

a judge sentenced tiara good man to six months for contempt of court. she testified in the first trial she saw the brothers running from the scene. that trial was ended with a hung jury. federal officials are investigating a salmonella outbreak in several states, including here in maryland. andrea fujii is in the newsroom with the report. >> reporter: the fda says the outbreak may be linked to sushi. eight people in maryland are among the 90 people who have been sickened in the united states and washington d.c. sushi is one of the foods being looked into because the majority of those that got sick ate sushi in the week before becoming ill. the centers for disease control and prevention began investigating the outbreak in january and the first maryland cases were discovered last month. >> thank you, andrea.

nearly dozens suspected islamic militants are behind bars in french after a series of raids. the police arrested ten people, another 19 suspects were arrested last week. raids come two weeks after an al qaeda-inspired gunmen went on a shooting spree. more information today about what caused the fiery plane crash in i siberia. officials say the plane was not properly deiced before it left the runway. there are new questions with about a plane crash in florida. as mike deforest shoppers ran for their lives moments arrest a plane slammed through the roof of a grocery store. >> reporter: minutes after the experimental aircraft plowed through the grocery store roof, these pictures were taken.

>> what's going on? >> the publix west gate plaza, oh, my glod, an airplane -- god, an airplane just went into the publix. >> reporter: tonight, the national transportation safety board has begun removing charred remnants of the plane from the grocery store. they will use this evidence to try to figure out what happened to the aircraft moments after taking off from nearby deland airport. according to police, surveillance cameras inside the store went black the instant the crash occurred. shelves of merchandise in aisles 3 through 6 were practically destroyed by the fire ball which also destroyed much of the plane. >> we are looking for our cables for flight controls, we are doing a cursory at the engine. there are no obvious signs of external damage. >> five people were injured, including the two pilots inside the plane. the country music group

sugarland has an important date coming up but it's not a concert. andrea fujii is in the newsroom with more on the stage collapse at the indiana state fair. >> reporter: vic, both members of sugarland will give video depositions next week from virginia. a judge ordered both jennifer nettles and christian bush to testify in lawsuits filed after the collapse. the two will address claims that sugarland resisted calls to delay the start of their august concert at the indiana state fair despite warnings of an approaching storm. powerful gusts from that storm caused the stage to collapse right on top of waiting fans. seven people were killed and dozens more were injured, vic. >> andrea, thank you. a spokesman for sugarland has repeatedly denied they did anything to contribute to the accident. police in pittsburgh are looking for the person behind a string of bomb threats at the university there. the university of pittsburgh is offering $50,000 for information on the suspect's identity. five more bomb threats were made in the last two days bringing the total number to 12

since february. no devices have ever been found. a chaotic end to an already emotional protest at a california university. as dozens of students rushed to confront faculty members, campus police break out the pepper spray. >> reporter: police caught in the middle of the sea of students, chaos on a college campus. according to firefighters, 30 people were pepper sprayed, including a 4-year-old girl. following a rally on campus, the students reportedly interrupted a meeting yelling. >> people just running around, i'm trying to help my friend basically get up from the ground because he couldn't see. >> reporter: santa monica students are demanding they have a say in a new course program that could begin as early this summer. it's not state-funded and could cost students as much as three times the amount of state

funded classes. >> he pepper sprayed a girl in the eye. she stood up and said how can you do this to me and as she stepped forward, sticking her finger in the air, that's when he grabbed her by her throat and pushed her down. >> reporter: hundreds of students filled the hallways hoping to get inside to speak at the meeting. the witnesses say the pepper spray began when the students started pushing their way inside the door. >> this is supposed to be a public forum where students are supposed to be able to speak and let their voice can be heard but they're in a room that only seats 60 students. >> the incident is still under investigation. the meeting did continue after the students needed treatment. a pregnant woman goes into labor during a trans atlantic flight. flight attendants were turned into make shift nurses when the woman's water broke. luckily, there was a there on board.

the plane made an emergency landing so mother and son could go to the hospital. a new study finds young children are not spending enough time outdoors, especially girls. researchers say preschool girls are 16% less likely than boys their age to play outside for their recommended 60 minutes per day. the doctors blame the trend on a mix of factors, including gender stereotypes and economic backgrounds. through. our temperatures go down, 73 degrees right now. look at all the 70s across the state. the only two cool spots are 59 in oakland in the mountains and 62 degrees on the water in ocean city. that's our high on the day. 61 is the average. but that's also climbing. we're going to spend most of this forecast close to that average. we'll get to that in a moment. tonight, temperatures will be dropping. for most of us weeks just going -- we're just going to be in the 40s but out west, that's prompted a freeze warning for garret county. the next couple of days, our highs are going to be close to average. we're going to look at frost advisories from time to time but each day we'll keep you up to that. this storm moving to our south is important because it's setting up the next storm track coming through. it will pass off to our south because of the way the jet stream is set up. the high pressure combining with that to push a northerly wind and push that storm track

down to the south. that's very important because this time frame, tomorrow into friday, does coin side with opening day. at this point, it's pretty close, but it looks like we are going to be dry. so the forecast comes together like this. we get rid of one front. here's the next one passing off to the south. the winds up out of the north at this time. it's important, because if you're dressing appropriatedly for the game, you're going to want to find out if your seats are in the shade or the sun because the sun is going to be nice and warm but with the wind up, it is going to be cool in the shade friday afternoon. forecast on the water, small craft advisory still in effect but the winds willing die down late tonight. tonight, temperatures in the 40s. then tomorrow, sunshine, just a few clouds out there. we're looking at a high about 62 degrees with that northerly wind. and we stay close to that average for the next couple of afternoons around here. we have that forecast with the five-day taking us through easter weekend also coming up shortly. >> can't wait. still to come on eyewitness news tonight. >> jackpot or bust? the bizarre press conference
