tomorrow afternoon. >> two hate crimes are under investigation opt university of maryland campus. mary is live in the newsroom with more on. >> reporter: the university says two separate incidents have take place. police say an elevator in an academic building was vandalized. shortly after that a management supervisor found a noose in a space being renovated. university police are actively investigating. the president of the university says the school does not tolerate hate nor bias. anybody found to be involved will be punished. >> the teen driver involved in a fiery crash has died. police say 16-year-old reynard succumb to his injuries overnight. police say the teens were in a stolen car and fleeing from

police before crashing into a tree and bursting into flames. >> thousands are cleaning pup forecasters say winds from the storms topped 135 miles per hour. susan reports for wjz from forney. there are no fatalities. >> reporter: volunteers are clearing the rubble from what used to be chris wilson's home. just about everything is gone but he is thankful his wife narrowly escape. >> she left minutes before the tornado came. >> reporter: wilson was at work when the tornado hit. he's hoping he can find pictures in the debris. >> all this stuff you see can be replace. i have some memories that i may lose. but i can make new ones because my family is still here. >> reporter: wilson is one of hundreds of residents who lost their homes. despite the heavy damage, only a few part-time were injured and no one died. >> the fact everybody who woke up yesterday morning is still alive today in forney, that's a

real blessing. >> reporter: the national weather service estimates at many as a dozen twisters touched down in north texas. one sent a tractor trailer flying into a dallas home. damage is also extense i in lan kasper. the aft of destruction can be seen from the air. this home is still standing while her neighbor's house is gone. >> we're blessed. we're spared. >> reporter: at the dallas fort worth airport, hundreds of flights are canceled for the second day in a row. many passengers were stranded overnight. >> there's probably hundreds of people just laying on the floor on cots. >> reporter: but many say that's a minor inconvenience compared to all those who are now homeless. >> now officials say the early warning system at the airport enabled many people to get to safety and helped minimize injuries.

we have some breaking news for you, the l.a. county coroner's office has released the full autopsy report on the death of whitney houston. the report states that an assistant to the singer found her plying facedown in a bathtub. the report also states that cocaine was found throughout her system. that a white powdery substance was found in her room believed to be cocaine. >> a proposed state sales tax increase is back in play. political reporter pat warren explains now it's back as an alternative. >> reporter: another penny on your dollar out of your pocket and into the state. governor o'mally says raising the tax we pay on just about everything but food would avoid applying it to gasoline. >> i always thought that the

now he's the republican nominee for senate. when you saw those results what was your reaction be. >> i can't describe it. it was a humbling experience. >> reporter: bongino is personable, says he'll fight for the working class. >> i grew up very poor. it's not fun. i've been through some scraps in my life. i'll tell you i think we have the gray matter and we have the physicality to get through a tough race. >> reporter: sitting senate ben cardin expects a lively campaign. >> i don't know a lot. i know he had has embraced the republican economic plan. >> reporter: the two disagree on taxing the wealthy, obama care and energy policy. bongino also has some skeptics. >> high ranking republican in maryland told me the problem with your campaign is that you have no political experience whatsoever. >> what is going up the ranks

a same sex couple is fighting for a divorce in maryland. but a judge says they're not even married here. now they headed to the state's highest court. >> reporter: the spouses say they meet every criteria to get a divorce only they're both women and that's why they say they're being discriminated against. jessica port got married four

years ago. >> we were very much in love. >> reporter: then. >> we realized we wanted different things from life. >> reporter: but when port filed for a divorce in october 2010 a judge denied her. you see, port is married to a woman. she and her exe changed vows in california. the judge said they could not be divorced because he does not consider them to be married and said to recognize the alleged marriage could be contrary to the public policy. at least four other same sex couples who were married in other states have been granted a divorce in maryland. the judge in port's case did not elaborate about why her divorce would violate public policy. nor did he offer a written opinion. >> i believe they've made it clear the public policy in this state favors recognition of these marriages. >> reporter: attorneys for port's ex say the state is on their side.

last month governor signed the marriage equally act. pointing to dozens of cases where maryland recognized marriages from other states that do not legally form here, like common law unions. for port it's not only a legal matter. it's an emotional one. >> i live in maryland. i pay taxes in maryland. i work in maryland. i have every right to get a divorce. >> reporter: i asked port why she doesn't go back to california to file for a divorce. she says it's not that easy. you have to be a resident of the state you file in. her entire life is now in maryland. >> it will likely take several months before judges make a rule being. >> atlanta police are investigating a traffic stop involving tyler perry. it happened last month. perry claims he was racially profiled by two white offices. a post on his facebook page he

says he quote, didn't feel safe at all. the police department is investigating but so far no sac been taking against the officers. >> in tonight's health watch, a salmonella scare here and around the country is linked to sushi. 90 people are sick and investigators say it has caused at least 7 hospitalizations. >> in all the world there are only 175 copies of the first printing of the king james bible. it turns out maryland happens to have one of them. alex reports it's a rare find of a very rare book. >> reporter: glenn john ton is the archivist which has been entrusted by the maryland bible society to dare for this 400- year-old book. it is the first printing of the king james bible. experts know because of a typo in the book of ruth. >> that makes it the real

thing. >> reporter: william shakespeare was writing plays when king james commissioned the bible. >> got rid of the word tyrant. brought in a team of some of the best writers in england at the time. they collectively wrote this document. >> reporter: how and when it got to maryland is a mystery. a scholar from stephenson authenticated it. it isn't pristine. there are tears and repairs. >> what makes it valuable to me is i can see what pages were used. i can see the repairs and all that tells me about how the document was used and the importance of the king james bible as a living document. >> biblical passages can be traced directly back to the king james version. so can some everyday sayings. >> eat, drink and be merry. those words have been in the english language only since the king james bible.

degrees. started out not 40s. we'll probably be there again tonight. off to the west that's a little different. with that cooler air we're going to be close to those average highs. our overnight lows could prompt frost advisory. here's the storm making its way to our south. you notice the second storm this there. that's going to take a southern track. it's setting up a weather pattern that will force the second storm off to the south bringing just cool, dry air our way. not only thursday but friday and right into the weekend. some great news for everyone heading out friday. this storm will be south of us. if your tickets are in the shade there will be a breeze and it's going to be dry out. you'll probably need a jacket. if you're in the sunshine it will be fantastic. all of that gets out of here over the weekend and we are looking at a nice start to the

it is 6:30, 74-degrees and sunny. here are some stories people are talking about tonight. break news, the man accused of gunning down his classmates at a california college now officially charged with 7 counts of murder. teresa garcia reports. >> reporter: one goh appeared wednesday afternoon. police say goh has confessed to the killings but he refused to say where he left the gun. a robot is being used to search a nearby waterway, but no weapon has been found. at oikos university investigators are collecting evidence. here outside the school crime scene tape is still in place

while the investigation continues. just in front a memorial to the victims is growing. these women work at a nearby office and wanted to leave flowers to remember the victims. >> i feel for the families. my heart goes out to them. >> reporter: timothy brown was judith seymour's fiance. >> disbelief. i never thought judy would be harmed going to school. >> reporter: oikos has posted a note of condolence. classes are canceled until further notice. >> now the head of oikos nursing program says goh was upset because he could not get a full refund. >> hundreds will gather at the dr. martin luther king jr. memorial in washington, d.c. the civil rights leader was assassinated in 1968. he was shot by a sniper. he was 38 years old.

>> headed to prison a federal judge sentences 5 new orleans police officers for shooting unarmed residents after hurricane katrina. mary is in the newsroom. >> reporter: the officers have been sentenced from 6 to 65 years each. four of the five officers were convicted for shooting unarmed civilians after hurricane katrina. two of those people died. a fifth officer was convicted of cover up the crimes through a serious of false reports. 20 current or former cops have been charged because of their a, accident in the days after the disaster. >> new zero tolerance policy has resulted in the firing of 35 new orleans officers and the suspense of 200 other thans. >> california students are pepper sprayed during a protest. campus police sprayed 30

demonstrators. the students are angry over a plan to offer high price courses and try to push their way into a trustees meeting last night. police say two officers were beaked up against a wall and began using force to keep the students out of the room. a man is locked up accused of spying on women. police say this man took pictures of women using the bathroom at the panera bread. he is a registered sex offender. >> mitt romney is more than halfway to locking in the republican nomination. he hopes the nomination process will end soon. his rivals aren't giving up just yet. >> reporter: newspaper editors and publishers and immediately went on the attack against president obama. >> i'm offering a clear choice and a different path. and unlike the president, i

2012 preseason schedule today. they will kick it off on thursday night august 9th. then home for a friday night exhibition against detroit. jacksonville will come to baltimore. then on the road to st. louis august 30th. the regular season schedule will be out later month. i was out at ravens headquarters today. pictures of past draft picks on display. coach john harbaugh, gm ozzie newsome met with us to discuss the draft. the ravens admit they need help on the offensive line. they'll stick to the philosophy of picking the best available player. >> we have to fulfill needs. we still and have said this for 16 years, we will not take need over a real good player. >> the ravens have the 29th overall pick and 8 picks total.

the draft opens with a first round in primetime three weeks from tomorrow. a new season a upon us. orioles opening day is friday. relievers get the final spots. today was the final tuneup. they played an exhibition in norfolk. for showalter it is his second full season. there are questions and uncertainties. in talking to the team it's clear they believe they have the right nothing lead the way. >> he's there for the players. he made that statement clear. that's the only thing you can really ask for, somebody to have your back in tough times. >> i have a good feel for what they go through. i try to put myself in their head and shoes as much as possible. you try to create an atmosphere that is competitive but at the
