jet blue midair meltdown. new video from the plane. and questions about the pilot's mental health. hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. kai is off. here's what everyone is talking about. is he competent to stand trial? jet blue has a pilot. karen brown reports for wjz. new cell phone video is surfacing from before the midair meltdown. >> reporter: this was jet blue pilot, clayton osbun, just moments before his midair meltdown. the passenger recorded it on his cell phone, after osbun left it on the cockpit and appeared to be acting strangely. >> i at least wanted to have something captured. so that god forbid, the phone was found in a field somewhere. maybe there would have been some tip, some hint for someone

to say, what might have been going on here? >> reporter: osbun reportedly running through the cabin, screaming about religion and terrorists. at the urging of the flight crew, they tackled osbun. >> everybody knows what happened. the real question is what's going on in his mind? what's causing all of this to happen? >> reporter: those concerns have prompted both defense attorneys and prosecutors to question whether osbun is competent to stand trial. now a judge has ordered the 49- year-old pilot to a medical facility for federal prisoners for tests to determine if, quote, osbun is currently suffering from a mental disease or defect, rendering him mentally incompetent. and if he is unable to understand the nature and mental consequences facing him. >> reporter: jet blue's ceo says the airline is standing by the captain. >> i'm supporting the captain's

family as well, with whatever needs there might be. >> reporter: osbun's wife said her husband never intended to cause harm. karen brown, wjz eyewitness news. >> osbun is expected to be back in court monday. well, questions continue to swirl around the record mega millions jackpot. today, they try to separate fact from fiction. wjz is live at lottery headquarters. the baltimore woman claims to have the golden ticket. mike. tell us the latest update. >> reporter: oh, mary. is it marilyn wilson? we simply don't know. it would have been something if she simply barged into that press conference. but she didn't do that. and some people simply choose to wait. the lottery director said he is not surprised no one has stepped forward yet. >> reporter: no one has claimed the mega millions ticket yet. and lottery officials have no idea. the lottery director also would

not address claims by merlan wilson who lives in south baltimore, that she is the won who won the jackpot. >> no one has approached the maryland lottery to claim this ticket. we have not heard from anyone claiming they have the ticket. and we have not heard from a representative, claiming that they are representing the winner of the ticket. >> reporter: the lottery office said many times, people wait. they have 182 days. and if no one claims the money, it is given back to the states where mega millions is played. >> this has been a one of a kind experience. the jackpot clearly captured the imagination of americans. i think it's fair to say that people who have never played the lottery before or maybe never even considered playing the lottery before, captured a piece of the dream of thinking about what they would do if they won that jackpot. >> reporter: now, the 7-eleven in milford mill, where the winning ticket was purchased, has surveillance cameras. and the problem with that is

the time stamp may not match the time when the actual ticket was bought. so that's inconclusive. we do know that it was a single purchase ticket that won and it was a quick pick. reporting live from maryland lottery headquarters, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> maryland allows winners to remain anonymous if they choose. just in time for the holiday weekend, gas prices hit an unfortunate milestone. vic is in the newsroom with tonight's wjz pump watch report. vic? >> mary, after hovering below the mark for more than a week, overnight, gas prices hit in maryland, $4 a gallon. montgomery county drivers are -- that price matches maryland's all-time record high, set on june 17, 2008. here's a look at pump watch numbers. the average cost for a gallon of regular was $2.71. today, that same gallon was 29 cents more.

across maryland, there's a 51- cent difference in the price. and to find the lowest prices, go to wjz.com, and click on links and numbers. a missing persons case is upgraded to murder in baltimore county. a body found tuesday in the woods near benji's drive in essex is positively identified as 57-year-old jeffrey jennings. jennings was last seen july 15th of last year. under arrest and recently indicted in his -- murder are 27-year-old dushell. police say they have evidence linking the suspect to jennings' murder. but they are not releasing a motive. testimony continues in the second day of a trial of a twin brother. weijia jiang reports. the jury is hearing conflicting testimony. >> reporter: the trial was expected to end by today. but we are a long way from that as prosecutors have not even finished presenting their case. in part because of obstacles on

the witness stand. >> reporter: during week 2 of the retrial against 20-year-old twins, travers and tremain johnson, accused of setting a pit bull on fire. prosecutors have faced one challenge after another. one witness faced contradictory statements. 25-year-old tiera goodman would not answer any questions on the stand. the judge held her in criminal content. then sentenced her to serve six months in prison. prosecutors were shocked. left to plan audio recordings. when she said she saw the johnsons running away where the dog was found. it happened in may 2009. phoenix was burned so badly, she had to be euthanized. the brothers were tried once before in the case, but it ended with a hung jury. animal welfare advocates are afraid that could happen again. now, they are relying heavily on police surveillance video. a city officer identified the johnsons in the tape, which

a plane crashes into a florida grocery store. now we're getting a look at the damage from inside. you can see the fire and smoke. the faa says the small plane came crashing through the roof of the store earlier this week. the pilot and a passenger suffered serious burns. three shoppers were also hurt. the cause of the crash yet to be determined. updating a story we brought you as breaking news this time yesterday. we're learning more about that massive fire that broke out inside a pennsylvania mansion. a man and a woman who were representing the property got -- renting the property got out safely. three firefighters did suffer minor injuries. the 19-room mansion was

marshall. 49 on the shore. 57 in cumberland. around the immediate metro area. everyone around the mid- to upper 50s. westminster, bel air, rock hall, kent island, annapolis, all at 57 degrees. and then we have 62 in columbia. and 62 as we mentioned, at bwi marshall. winds out of the west/snoargt west, going to continue to bring in cool air. so much so that we have freeze warnings in effect for the top tier of the state. that goes in effect until 3:00 in the morning. when the stun comes up, we start to get a bit of a warmup here. right now, we see some of the colder temperatures just to our north and west. we're in the 60s in atlanta. 50s in memphis. 70s down toward dallas. and we're going to stay pretty moderate for the next few days. there is a low-pressure system to our south that will be projecting clouds to our direction. it stays to the south. and it keeps all the rain to our south. if you're a fan of the masters golf tournament, they're going to be battling these rains for the next two days.

accused mastermind. the five men are charged with planning an execution of the 2001 attacks in new york, washington, d.c., and shanksville, pennsylvania. nearly 3,000 people were killed. the men face several charges, including terrorism, conspiracy, and murder. denise? >> all right. thank you, mary. if convicted, they could all be sentenced to death. no decisions today in the child sex abuse case against former penn state coach jerry sandusky. his attorney called for the charges to be dropped. but the judge postponed the investigation. sandusky faces more than 50 counts of sexuality acts, involving boys, dating back to 1994. the florida man accused of shooting and killing unarmed teen trayvon martin, has an a new attorney. he was quick to defend his client publicly.

piers morgan said martin was responsible for his own death. he also accused the media of destroying his client before knowing what happened. >> he was absolutely entitled to defend himself. and that's why trayvon martin is dead, not because of racial profiling. >> there has been outrage and calls for him to be arrested. police say they have no reason to believe he didn't act in self-defense. a special prosecutor is investigating. u.n. security council calls on syria to comply with a deadline to end the violence. monica villa massar reports on the growing conflict. . >> reporter: this amateur video shows the government city of holmes. activists called this violence some of the worst in the year- long uprising. they say 70 people were killed in one day.

a suicide bomb attack inside a church kills 10 people inside somalia. shut. the new owner of the upper big branch mine, where 29 people died a year ago, said it will be permanently sealed off. they bought the mine last summer. families of those kimed in the blast are-- killed in the blast are suing. people are questioning whether sentences are just. paul murphy speaks to the families ever people killed in the aftermath of hurricane katrina. >> reporter: based on statutory minimum sentences for gun crimes, the four shooters were expected to get decades in prison, and they did. the judge sentenced sergeant ken bowen to 40 years. falcon got 65 years, and officer anthony villa vaso, 38 years. >> there were many, many new orleans police officers who performed courageous, selfless acts of heroism in the

aftermath of hurricane katrina. but regrettably, the acts of heroism of so many have been overshadowed by the misconduct of a few. >> reporter: the former nopd officers were convicted last august in the shooting deaths of 40-year-old ronald madison and 17-year-old james perset. and wounding four days after striking the city. the fourth was convicted of masterminding a cover-up. the judge sentenced him to six years in prison. >> i think today's today's sentencing reflect that when you do something, it should always be in mind that at some point, it needs to withstand the light of day. and it needs to withstand that scrutiny of a later time. >> reporter: the defense attorney plans to repeal or appeal the conviction and/or long sentence. the officer not behind bars is expected to face trial in may. a man confesses to police.

and mary is in the newsroom with the latest on the worst school shooting case since virginia tech. and witnesses say the gunman burst through the reception hall. 43-year-old faced a judge for the first time yesterday. he did not enter a plea, but admitted to shooting and killing six students and a staff member for taking one of the students' car keys and fleeing the scene. investigators say goh was anger -- angry with the students. surveillance video captures a man in arizona. this video was taken after robert stout was cleared. following his arrest for drugs and aggravated assault on an officer. he's posing for his mug shot, while officers hold his head up. he spent an hour in a jail cell. an internal investigation has been opened.

officials are blaming a mapping system for failing to alert people about a deadly wildfire in colorado. it did not recognize where to map certain homes because of a discrepancy between google maps and the system's dividing lines. some residents who registered their cell phones online also did not get warnings. the company said it is working to correct problems. there are calls for investigation, after dozens of demonstrators are pepper sprayed at santa monica college. the incident was caught on tape. >> reporter: it wasn't a typical wednesday at santa monica college. the buzz on campus was this: this video from the santa monica patch shows students running from the administration building, crying, screaming, after being pepper sprayed by campus police. >> your eyes burning. tearing up. i couldn't read. i was like, coughing. >> reporter: christian cordova was one of 100 impromptu

sprayed. only about a dozen students got in. >> we were just trying to like get our voices heard. >> reporter: so when the doors opened, students rushed the hall. with campus police trying to close the doors and students pushing forward, many in front got caught in the middle. >> at the moment, i was, like, scared because i've never been maced before or in an environment where the police were doing that to students. >> reporter: the meeting was over a new tiered system for summer classes because of state budget cuts, the college only has enough funds to offer 700 courses at the usual rate. to accommodate need, santa monica is offering classes at a higher rate. >> i think it's okay. as long as they're not taking additional away from the already offered classes. >> it's worth it for the quality. >> reporter: but regardless of how they may differ on the proposed classes, these stiewpths agree, -- students agree, pepper spraying is taking it too far. >> reporter: santa monica

school officials are investigating. well, a shark chomps down on a surfer's foot in hawaii. a shark bit his left foot. he clung on, yelled for help. and two strangers pulled him to shore. lifeguards posted warning signs. the man's wounds will keep him out of the water for a while. but he says he's eager to get on board. buying a ham for easter dinner this weekend will cost you more. ham prices have been higher than usual because the cost of pig feed has gone up. this spring, ham has been selling for 35 cents per pound. despite the extra costs, ham sales don't appear to be slowing down. a dog takes a bullet in the head to save his owner's life in new york. the 12-year-old pit bull, kilo is a lucky dog, when a gunman, posing as a fedex delivery man hits the owner. the shooter fired three shots. one hit kilo's head. but he was checked out by vets

we'll have it officially for you in just a second. 62 now at bwi marshall. relative humidity. air is very dry right now. this wind from the west/northwest is bringing in a very cool air mass overnight. it's going to be responsible for a freeze warning in effect for harford county, right on out to allegheny county because of the cold air coming in from canada. 29.83 is the barometer reading. around the state, take a look at these temperatures. 49 on the schoar. we have 62 on bwi marshall. 58 up toward elkton. 57 in westminster and bel air. 57 in anap onis and on -- annapolis and kent island. winds will be persist entsz. not going to be very, very, we'll say gusty. at least through the afternoon, as things start to calm down. but there will be times through the early part of the day tomorrow, where things will be a bit breezy. with that, definitely take the jacket. we were just discussing that here. take a jacket out there, so you'll be comfortable.

but we are going to start to see the temperatures leveling out. we'll have 60s in the mid- atlantic. 60s to the south, where there have been very strong storms, rolling in across texas, toward atlanta. that could affect play at the masters, down toward augusta, over the next day or so. but these storms are going to stay well to our south. while we get cloud cover out of this. most of the moisture stays to the south. and the clouds will be pulled down with it. and we talked about the breeze tomorrow. the breezy conditions stayed with us through the early part of the day. things start to calm down very nicely. stays very pleasant. you'll hardly find a cloud anywhere tomorrow. but again, it's going to be right on target with a 60- degree daytime high, right around 60 to 62. right on target for this first full weekend of april. sunset today at 7:45. small craft advisory because of those winds going into tomorrow. northwest winds tonight. mainly clear. 36 degrees, the overnight low. 60 for tomorrow.
